Quote:And once again we have self-entitled tough guy clamouring to make a GATING TASK hard enough that people must either "lrn2ply" or "quit." This hasn't gotten a better idea in the past six years, and it's not a good idea now.
Quote:"Go get help" is not an acceptable solution.
Weren't you the one who said that it was up to the developers to decide if teaming was mandatory or not?
Quote:And the argument that MMO = teaming is still just as empty as it has always been, ESPECIALLY in this game, and that's because it's not an argument. The only thing inherent in the genre is many people in a persistent world. How, and indeed IF they interact is entirely up to the specific developer. I do most of my interaction with the many other players via text chat and global e-mail and very rarely via the team mechanic. The developers of City of Heroes have chosen to not punish solo players in an attempt to re-educate them or evict them like most other MMO developers, and for that I commend them.
Guess what, the devs decided that if you can't do it alone, you need to get help. They even say so in the Honoree mission, and in most of the older missions with EBs in them as well. -
I tend to come up with concepts first, some very fleshed out, some less so, and the gender is part of that concept. Then I decide on which AT to make.
I'd say my male/female ratio (counting huge as male) is about 50/50. Got both genders spread over all ATs. -
Quote:Or go after his clones ... or get a friend to help. *gasp* How dare I! The idea!Agreed.
So my blasterers and defenders and controllers are just supposed to stand there and trade punches with him like they were tanks?
**** THAT NOISE.
If you really insist on soloing, get inspirations or some summonable stuff. Plenty of choices. You also can still punt him into the lava. -
Quote:Drawing someone away from the source of their regenerative abilities, totally breaking the intent of the incounter. Some might call it an 'exploit'. Not me though, wouldn't dare.YES!
... Like drawing someone away from the source of their regenerative abilities to defeat them, rather than risking ourselves by taking down the clones while getting hit by attacks! Or punting him into the lava and pinning him there with knockbacks. That's thinking about things! None of this crazy just running around shooting everything and trying to wear down enemies, that's just pointless, stupid and boring.
And yes, running and shooting things is pointless and boring ... wait what? -

Quote:I thought I read in the GR Beta that Praetorians indeed don't unlock EATs. But Paragonwiki seems to contradict me.Hello, forums. It's been a while.
My search-fu may have not been good enough, but I could not find an existing answer to this question, so here goes:
As all epic archetypes are supposed to "unlock" at 20 now instead of 50, should I find it strange that my 26 stalker did not receive the appropriate message? Or do red-side archetypes that start life in Praetoria ignore that unlock?

Quote:AwPatch notes for build 1900.201011102104.23.
Powers
- The Player Info window should now correctly display Set Bonuses owned by a character.
I was kinda hoping that this was a 'feature'. The info tab looks all messy and cluttered with all the bonusses in there.
Quote:- Mender Ramiel Story Arc
- Added more detailed description of what is needed to access Mender Ramiels arc when you speak with him.
- Trapdoor no longer stops Bifurcating.
- Trapdoor will mix up the location of his bifurcations a little bit more.
- Trapdoor can no longer be dragged out of range of his Bifurcations.
Quote:- Tin Mage Task Force
- Director 11s Proximity Mines will no longer fail to trigger when a player comes near.
Quote:- Safeguard Missions
- Villains on the heist should no longer appear to get stuck in elevators as they are attempting to flee with the loot.
Nice patch, with some much needed fixes. -
Quote:Alright, I forgot Status Protection and Phase (completely forgot about the last one). All the others fall under 'knockback' as far as I'm concernedA
You have:
- Defense
- Status protection
- Single target knockback in Force Bolt
- AOE KB in Repulsion Field (which, frankly, unless the FF Defender's hopping right in with the tank with it on shouldn't be an issue.)
- KnockDOWN and Disorient in Repulsion Bomb
- PBAOE Repel in Force Bubble
- Phase in Detention Field.
So, saying it's only one effect really isn't accurate. -

Quote:Firs time I did it was on my dark/dark corruptor (team build, so poor dps) and I just went after the clones as he spawned them and blasted him in between. Had him down after the 5th or 6th time the red text flashed across my screen.Hmm. My Dark/Dark Defender is having a rough time with Trapdoor. Tried pulling him in the lava and he just kept jumping out (even from melee range), tried pulling him down the corridor but I couldn't dent his HP (so he was still getting a regeneration boost, or he's really resistant to negative energy). Sent my temp pets at him, and used up my inspirations. I'll have to try again later. I haven't had such a problem doing damage to him with my previous nine characters.
Perseverance. -
Quote:And I'm sick of hearing this ridiculous argument. Wait, that's no argument, it's just you coming in and throwing a tantrum.I am so sick of hearing that ridiculous argument. Yes, it is an MMO. Now, please, tell me where it is written that one MUST be forced to team by the simple virtue of this being an MMO. If you choose to do the semantics argument of "but..but...MMO stands for...," I will know you have nothing of actual substance to contribute to the discussion and will therefore ignore you accordingly.
Quote:Yes, I understand how MMO's work. But, honestly, making content available for the solo-player, even if it is harder to do, is not a bad thing. We already have TFs, SFs, Raids, and Trials that require teams. Why is it so wrong to allow a player who prefers to solo the ability to get their Alpha slot unlocked without having to resort to playing in a way they don't like? -
Quote:I only agree with this to an extent. The fact that forcefields buffs defense isn't the problem, because softcapping is far from as common as some people make it out to be (and almost non-existant in the low to mid levels), as is shown by the popularity of Cold domination buffs on teams and that people still frown upon VEATs that don't take maneuvers. This is also why I disagree with the notion that "everything it can do, traps does almost as well". This is true for solo play maybe, but on teams the single target buffs from forcefields are a nice advantage imo.The other problem with Forcefields isn't just that it is a one trick pony (it does defence and only defence...no other buffs or debuffs) but IO sets mean people can get close to or softcap their defense for not exactly a large chunk of inf.
So in an IO enviroment where Defense is easily available means that Forcefields just really isn't that useful since you're just going past the softcap.
Forcefields is a legacy set that hasn't seen an update, it was created when IOs were not even on the cards and where buffing up someones defense was actually a fairly good thing. Now it sticks out as the 'blech' buffing set. Everything it can do, Traps does almost as well and has the added benefit of debuffing -regen and -resistance too.
The two things that I feel count against forcefields are that its second effect, besides massive defense, is knockback, and we all know how popular that is, and that it is a very inactive set to use. You toggle on your big bubbles and apply team buffs every 4 minutes, maybe annoy the team a little with random knockback powers, and that's about it.
But overall I agree with your conclusion that forcefields would benefit from a bit of an overhaul. Of course that will piss off the people who like forcefields as is, despite, or maybe because of, the passive nature of the set. -

Quote:In my experience a lot of MM's don't use their buffs and debuffs all that much. They just let their pets do all the work.Yeah, I prefer to believe it's a technical problem and not just the devs wanting "no badge for joo MMs!" It may not be possible to distinguish pets from other critters that just may wander up and get involved in the mess.
The MM's participation as a buffer/debuffer SHOULD earn him the rewards. However, in many cases the resiliance and buffs of the henchmen themselves provide as much or even more to the MM's participation.
If pet participation isn't tracked than that might be the cause of MM's not getting propper rewars. -
Quote:The only mission I skip is the first one. It's a nice gimmick, but not that interesting after the first few times. Although herding the map and then seeing them all melt away in seconds from RoF was fun.I'm guessing that the most-dropped mission on the arc would be the Hero 1 mission?
-
Quote:Yes, you have to kill her as quickly as possible while dodging the nanite patches. That's different from killing her as fast as possible from a safe spot. Once you get the hang of it isn't all that hard. We're already pulling BM anyway, it works to a degree. I mean, the point of the mission is to kill BM as quickly as possible the first time, then kill her as quickly as possible the second time. The waves are a timesink/delay tactic. It's innovative for the game, so kudos for that.
Quote:Anyway, it's just a question of getting used to it; like Cathedral of Pain I'll do this for the badges, never do it again then switch back to ITF/LGTF/LRSF/STF and a Tin Mage every now and then for the double shard drop at the end.
Quote:If a 15-30 minute strat develops for the new TFs, great. I expect that the mobs being 54s will likely not be an incentive for that sort of thing though. -
Quote:I feel that everything you just mentioned is exactly what the devs have been giving us since GR and I18.I must disagree with your reply. I think you can add great things to the game and make them a lot of fun. They can be different to a slight degree.
Using unique maps for missions would be great. I know this is difficult due to the amount of work required but I would rather have less stuff in an issue if that meant each issue was going to provide some unique stuff.
I also think the TFs/SFs could be so much better. The best one is, IMO, the ITF. Follow that formula for future TFs. Again, more work but so much more enjoyable. I run the ITF more than all the other TFs...it's not even close.
It is very easy to add new superhero-like characters. Stop making the new characters just alternates of what we have. Be original. Feature them. When I collected comics, one of the coolest things was to see that wild new looking enemy super(s).
Praetoria has some unique missions with new mechanics and decent story telling.
The morality and alignment missions are all unique and a vast improvement over radios and papers.
Did you try the new lvl 20-30 arcs yet? They just might be the best thing in Issue 19, heh.
And both of the new TFs have some cool new things as well. But more importantly, they're relatively short, fastpaced and challenging. ATF has replaced ITF as my new favourite TF in the game. A lot of the older TFs are unnecessarily long. The second mission of the ITF is a good example of this and, well, the whole of LGTF. I'm not even mentioning the really old Freedom Phalanx stuff.
That's why I said that if you expect a lot more than what we've currently been getting, I believe that you're going to stay dissapointed. -
Quote:Or to ask one of your teammates who are below if they don't give a warning first already. It's rather easy to just jump up and look down to see if there is an aoe effect at the door before using it...
If they create a safe zone everyone will just huddle in there and pull BM over. Ruins the whole point of the mission.
But that's probably elitist talk again ... -
Yey. My favourite event. Even though each year I resent baby new year by the end of it.

Quote:Bots/bubbles is a very high powered MM. It's also dreadfully boring because you steamroll everything while being safe behind your bubbles. Doesn't help that bubbles isn't an active secondary either. That's where traps is much more fun that bubbles imo.Wow--MM/bots seems to be disappointing to many. I have one, but I think she is lvl 22ish. I am just surprised at the lack of fun because I heard they are a pretty high powered MM.
Personally, I REALLY thought I would like masterminds, but I have 5 or 6 and the highest is upper 30s. I just don't enjoy them the way I would like. I get bored telling pets what to do rather than just doing it. -
Quote:I have a different feeling actually.I'm pretty torn on the new TFs.
Tin Mage is perfect. Director 11 is annoying but not invincible. The last fight isn't crazy, very fun with some interesting foes. The second mission is fantastic, great dialogue and back and forth. A+ for this.
Apex is definitely more tedious. The first mission is slogging through hotspots outside then more inside the sewers, then too many War Walkers. Animating the police drones is nice.
The second mission isn't fun at all and extremely tedious. We managed the first part fairly easily but the second part is where it breaks down; the "Halberd Death Waves" should at least not spawn at the entrance to the outside area. They also seem to zone in on rezzing characters.
Our groups spent a lot of time running around the waves, pulling Battle Maiden, attacking her, then we'd have a few party members die to the Death Waves. We'd rebuff, try again and boom, more deaths to the Halberds. At that point, we'd tried three or four times with each team and decided it wasn't fun/enjoyable so we all went to run ITFs.
If anything, I'd definitely tweak the second mission of Apex a bit (don't spawn death waves at entrance, reduce unresisted damage). Tin Mage is just right.
The ATF endfight is a great mechanic. You have to pay attention and keep your mind on things.
The TMTF is much more basic and resembling the older TFs: hit AV's untill they keel over. It's far from bad, but not on the same level as ATF imo. -
Quote:I honestly think that if this is really how you feel about things, that there isn't much that the devs can realisticly do to make the game feel 'fresh' to you again. It is a neat system but, yet again, it is primarily another system. The Ramiel arc to unlock it boring and weak - you can fly through it and it isn't interesting at all. Just old enemies and maps (for the most part) slapped together with a not-so spectacular story.
I do like the actual powers and system. It is a decent idea and prompts us to play level 50 stuff. Unfortunately, it is the same level 50 stuff we've had for a while now. IMO these new arcs and stories are weak - the same old maps with some new tale to tell. Nothing compelling or interesting to me when you consider this is a video game/MMO.
The two new TFs are much of the same old, same old...again. Same old maps, same old enemy groups (for the most part) and a button-mash fest (for the most part).
I think the system could benefit from some original materials and content. The game is almost 7 years old and we keep seeing the same major players that we've seen for years. It is tired.
Just my 2 cents
As you said, the game is 7 years old, it is what it is. You can't expect drastic changes to mechanics and gameplay at this point. -
Quote:That sucks for you. Really. (You are fighting level 50 enemies and above right? Just making sure.)Perhaps I've been very unlucky, but I haven't received a shard drop yet. Doesn't seem too fast to me...
Maybe they should build in some sort of guarantee. Something like if you haven't gotten a shard in 1000 kills you should get one guaranteed off your next kill.
I personally found 5 or 6 in around 10 tip missions set for x3 or x4.And an average of 6 per TF/SF I've done so far.
I'd say that is about the same rate per mob defeated. -
Quote:As I said before. Having unrealistic expectations only sets you up for dissapointment.Um.....yup! No problem! And not exactly a new game, or at least an integrated one, like cov is now. They started with preatoria, but 1 to 20 is a very small part of the hours you spend getting to 50. But, it's a start. And yes, prolly at least 2 years until they finish preatoria.....cause they are too focused on cosmetics and bigger boom for our toons.
But yes, you nailed it! Imo -
Quote:Oh please. Get over yourself.I know the forums frown upon any critism of this holy game in any way shape or form, but.......
K, yes, you guys are spouting off little unrelated bits of content, I am talking a new lvl 1 to 50 experience....like cov and what they just started with preatoria.
If you are happy with the content they have gave you, that's great! I would like a new 1 to 50 experience....somewhere new for my toons to spend their careers, not just an hour here or there and still spending 95 percent of my road to 50 doing the same things I have done for 5 years...... And if feeling that way warrants your fanboi bashing of me, then so be it !
"People disagree with me, so they all must be raving fanbois! WAAAH!"
