Where did you think the Hellions go to pay their base rent?
-
I know that this is going against the grain of the outrage expressed by a few people, but this was kinda cool and I have to add my dissenting viewpoint to the standard rants.
So like a lot of people, I bought the 24-pack of Super Packs the day they came out. I got all of the costume pieces, no black wolf (yet!), and a healthy mix of ATOs, boosters, unslotters, etc. Of course, I also got a bunch of inspirations, those things much maligned as the "useless crap" that the developers are accused of throwing in just to keep you from getting all of that sweet, sweet loot (and spend more money, of course).
Now, I admit I'm not exactly the target demographic for inspirations for purchase. Truth is, I find the game excruciatingly easy, even the "hard" content that is supposed to challenge players. Not that I'm a godlike powerhouse of a player, mind you, but mainly because if I get defeated, I'm like, "meh," life goes on. If you're willing to die a lot and put in a bare minimum of preparation, you can accomplish pretty much everything in a reasonable amount of time.
So anyway, this weekend, I went on a Mortimer Kal strike force. We got to the end, where you have to defeat Positron as that #@*$! Cleansing Flame keeps healing him if you don't defeat it in like five seconds. No one really knew the mechanics of it going in, so we'd get him down to half his health, and then he'd heal back up completely. I tried and tried to tell people, "You have to drop everything and focus on that Cleansing Flame!", but to no avail. Then the leader dropped, leaving us with what seemed an insurmountable challenge to overcome. I mean, if we couldn't do it with five, how could we do it with four?
Then, I remembered, "Oh yeah! I have all of those inspirations from my Super Packs!" I claimed a bunch of them, gathered everyone together, and before going in, popped four or five of them, including the defense, damage resistance, and damage ones. They carried us through the entire battle, and we managed to defeat Positron with just one of the Cleansing Flames to deal with.
I probably won't use the inspirations every session, but I've gotta say, it was nice having them--and having enough of them--to accomplish what we were trying to do. I'm not saying, "Wow, I hope I get a ton of inspirations!" in future Super Packs, but I will say that in hindsight, I'm glad I got as many as I did while trying to go for other stuff. It was a healthy mix of them with other stuff I wanted to make me try and like them. I don't look at them as the "useless crap" drops, I see them more as, "well, I'll eventually use them for something, so that cool."
Oh, and last night, I did pop a few of the individual dual inspirations while soloing Arbiter Hawk's Valentine's Day mission. I didn't have to, but it was nice defeating Countess Crey a little faster and not faceplanting so many times. I doubt I'll be buying any of the inspirations directly (barring really good sales on the market), but I do see myself buying plenty of Super Packs in the future and hope they add more goodies to the mix. -
Quote::epic eyeroll:It's one thing to give a little debuff for not doing it correctly. Even a strongetr debuff wouldn't matter if it was just 15 or 20 minutes.
20 hours is ridiculous.
I'd just started to think that maybe some of the design decisions were improving, when they go and do something like this. In fact, I had actually decided to drop 50 bucks or so on the power packs.
After getting a 20 hour debuff dropped on me, that's money that they're never going to see. Unfortunately, it's the only way I have to communicate my displeasure that they'll listen to, so I figured I'd post here: 50 dollars in lost sales as a direct result of the decision to put something so ridiculously punitive into the game.
Oh yeah? I'm going to go home tonight and spend ONE HUNDRED dollars on Paragon Points. I've got thousands already (proof in a message I posted the other day) specifically because they got you so worked up about this. I normally don't delight in the misery of others, but after seeing the gross overreactions in this thread, I'm glad they had a 20 hours debuff. -
You seem to be a bit new here (welcome to the forums!), so I'm going to warn you up front that you're probably about to be bombarded with some nasty replies. Try not to take them personally. There are a lot of veterans who have a bit of history behind the requests you're making who think they know everything and who won't hesitate to inform you as such.
Here's the no-snark response to this post:
1) You need to post these kinds of messages in the Suggestions and Ideas forum. This one is mainly used to help players who are having technical issues running the game, or to report bugs or unexpected weirdities with the game.
2) The devs have a long history of basically saying that a level cap increase will never happen. No, they haven't come right out and said it that bluntly, but there have been things said like, "I doubt it will ever happen," "It would take prohibitively long to change the engine and rebalance the game," etc. They'll never come out and say, "This will never happen," but it's as close to anything they've ever claimed is in that status.
3) The space idea... Probably will happen at some point, but the player base has been going through various levels of expectation for it since a survey was sent out that vaguely intimated it back in, what was it? 2006 or 2007. They probably have actually worked on it at various points, and as far as we know, it might be almost ready and will be pushed out in Issue 23. Or it may never get released. It's just been kind of the running joke for years, something the players thought was imminently on the horizon and that never came to pass.
4) I'm not trying to be mean or obnoxious, but very, very rarely have the devs ever incorporated a player's story suggestion into the game. In fact, the only time I can remember it is Numina's back story, which was design by a player who entered a contest specifically for that purpose. The devs do, however, frequently incorporate player suggestions when it comes to game mechanics, quality of life features, and so on. I'm not saying that you shouldn't offer up story suggestions, I'm just warning you that it's highly unlikely that they'll incorporate them.
Hopefully people won't be too snarky in the rest of the thread, but like I said, if they are, don't take it personally. It's just that a lot of the things you happened to specifically mention touches on stuff that has a long history in the game. -
Speaking of the store, there is another error. The icon for the item "Enhancement Increase (2 of 2)" indicates that it will increase your enhancement inventory by 5 (with a +5 in the corner). In fact, it increases it by 10. The first increase icon correctly displays +10.
Here are the icons for comparison (I added the red circle to make it stand out):
The description correctly does say, though, "Enhancement Inventory Increase (10 slots) (2 of 2)". Still, it could negatively impact sales if people are just glancing at the icon and thinking, "1600 points ($20) for only five slots?"... -
Quote:In the beta, there's a configuration settings button on the login page.4) WORSE, I CAN'T FIX IT UNTIL I GET IN THE GAME. This is the most annoying aspect.
I hear what you're saying, though. Ideally, the launcher would have a configuration settings interface. Unfortunately, I think that it's an entirely different team that works on the launcher (NCsoft) as does the game (Paragon Studios), so I don't hold much hope there. -
Hey guys, the icon for the Invention License (30 day) in the Paragon Store is messed up. Someone probably typoed the image URL. It looks like a default "image missing" type icon. Note that the small icon in the list view is correct; this is the icon when you access the full description of the item.

Quote:Oh, come on people, that was funny! Yeesh, lighten up!Yep. I hate that. I can't find a black and white showing of it around me anywhere either.
Just because you have some new technology doesn't mean everyone wants it.
Quote:And now you know why I'm violently opposed to 3D whenever it's suggested for City of Heroes.
Quote:So now, because people are figuring out what a ***tastic gimmick 3D is, the studios are basically going to force it on us unless we want to just take half a day off work to see it in the middle of the day or go in over a weekend? -
Because your contacts don't actually have jobs.

Quote:Seriously? Because one night I petitioned someone spouting racial slurs in broadcast. Brian Clayton called me about 15 minutes later on my cell phone and told me they tracked it down. It was some guy in Maryland, and that they actually contracted someone to go to the guy's house and shoot him in the head. "Don't worry Tony, he won't be doing THAT anymore," he said, and then--I swear, this was a little bit creepy--he kind of silently giggled. There's something to be said for getting both sides of the story. Of course, I'm not privy nor part of the Customer Service policies or procedures, I cannot speak to this aspect of it specifically.
At first it was a little unnerving, but later, I was kind of pleased at the incredible quality of customer support displayed over the incident.
*This didn't actually happen. It was just a dumb little story for your mild amusement on an otherwise uneventful Thursday night. -
Quote:In the interest of making sure credit is given where credit is due, it really was around 99.44% Codewalker. The guy is a powerful force for nifty, and you're probably going to be hearing his name a lot more going forward.Another piece of the COH social machine has come back home. Thanks for all the hard work from everyone who brought Faces back from the brink!

Faces is back!
Hey all, in case you missed Codewalker's post in the other thread, he's been doing a lot of work lately on restoring CoH Faces, the last site on the Titan Network that was still down from our hackage back on Halloween. Aside from getting the software updated to avoid a similar hacking in the future, he's also fixed some other bugs and holes that could have caused potential problems. Yes, he really is that dreamy.
Anyway, we're really sorry it's been down for so long. As we've modified the code semi-extensively, if you notice any bugs or weirdities, by all means, let us know by posting a message on our forums or otherwise PMing me or him or responding in this thread.
Enjoy! -
If I were really analytic, I'd also map how City of Heroes was doing relative to some measure of the economy as a whole. The time from 2008 through last year were pretty brutal. Sometimes losing ground but not as fast as the economy as a whole can be consider a win. I'd also map how City of Heroes did relative to some of its competition. Aside from seeing how our marketing people and developers stack up against other companies', it would also give insight into how the industry as a whole is doing.

Quote:Case in point, though I admit that I didn't expect it to be Beastyle...Or the opposite--someone may have heard that they are, in fact, going to have another Double XP Weekend at some point and can correct me. Who knows? Maybe someone read a post that they can link to saying something as specific as, "We haven't had one in a while but at some point we probably will."

Quote:If you buy Paragon Points in bundles, the prices are even better. In the extreme case of buying $100 of Paragon Points and getting the 20% off, the prices come out to:1 pack = 80 Points/Pack = $1.00 USD/Pack
12 pack = 70 Points/Pack = $0.88 USD/Pack or $10.50 USD for the bundle.
24 pack = 60 Points/Pack = $0.75 USD/Pack or $18.00 USD for the bundle.
1 pack = 80 Points/Pack = $0.83 USD/Pack
12 pack = 70 Points/Pack = $0.73 USD/Pack or $8.75 USD for the bundle.
24 pack = 60 Points/Pack = $0.625 USD/Pack or $15.00 USD for the bundle.
I plan on picking up a bunch of these, probably a 24 pack. I know, blah blah blah "morally bankrupt," but even if I don't get an exact something I'm shooting for, I'm durn sure I'll get a bunch of stuff I like and that's well worth it.
For what it's worth, I'm almost certain--to the point I'd actually bet on it--that you will eventually get your wish. I think that this will probably be like most stuff, that it's in the Super Packs first to encourage folks to pick some up. Eventually, they'll probably put them out on the store for people to buy directly as they rotate more stuff into the Super Packs. -
Quote:The reason I emphasized think so heavily is because I'm being up front. I hazily remember something about the topic, but it's entirely possible that I could be totally wrong. If you knew me better, you'd know that I try to be as up-front to my certainty about various things as possible. If I say, "I am 100% sure about this," you can take it to the bank. If you argue with me, you will be wrong. On the other hand, when I say, "I think--emphasis on think," it means, "take this worth a grain of salt, or at least, don't put much faith in it without some independent verification, because while I believe what I'm about to say to be true, I cannot back it up and would not bet on it."Well, I think --emphasis on think-- that my cousin's neighbor's ex-girlfriend's roomate heard they were doing TRIPLE xp every single weekend from now on!
Yes, it is. For one thing, other people may have heard the same thing and can back me up, thus establishing a level of certainty beyond "I think..." Or the opposite--someone may have heard that they are, in fact, going to have another Double XP Weekend at some point and can correct me. Who knows? Maybe someone read a post that they can link to saying something as specific as, "We haven't had one in a while but at some point we probably will." There you go, "I maybe heard it somewhere" has accomplished something useful--now everyone, including myself--is correctly informed of the current status, and that is a Good Thing™.
This is not without precedent. Several times in the past, I've said, "I think [something]," and been supplied proof to the contrary. I appreciate it when that happens, because I'd rather be corrected than to continue believing something that's factually wrong.
Quote:Weasel words like "they have hinted somewhere" do that thing where you claim to have the authority of an actual quote with none of the trouble of actually citing a source or proving your point. It is, at best, misleading.
Had I simply stated, "They're not going to have any more Double XP Weekends," then you might be right to be irritated that I make such blanket statements without any kind of source or evidence. As it is, I am honestly trying to clearly convey my uncertainty, not hide or disguise it.
Sheez. -
Quote:MMORPG does mean teaming.* Not 100% of the time, not even most of the time, or even frequently, if that's your preference. But I don't know how to say it any clearer. There is a difference between asking the developers to cater to people who like to solo (which is reasonable) and asking the developers to cater to people who only solo (which is not).Well, it obviously bothers you, since every time the subject of solo options for content comes up, you appear with your usually line of "MMORPGS mean teaming".
Contrary to how others wish to redefine the genre, it does not mean, "A single-player game in which other players are merely background decorations to see between missions." In order to fully experience the game, including perks that from time to time you're probably going to think you have to have, you are going to have to team up. I'm sorry if you think this is a terrible thing, but again, it's an MMORPG. You should have known.
If you're able to enjoy the game without the perks that come through teaming, then by gummy, you have my blessing. Because City of Heroes is a solo-friendly game, it's very possible to do so. But yeah, it does bother me when people come here and constantly post requests to destroy one of the main draws of the game, the team-oriented experience.
*Or at least, interacting with other players at a high level. City of Heroes implements this primarily through teaming. -
-
I honestly cannot remember, but I think--emphasis on think--that I remember hearing this, too. It may have been at the Pummit back in November. I wish I could cite the source, but I honestly have no idea. I could be mixing it up with something else, but now that someone else said it, it makes me more convinced that I actually heard it right.
-
Quote:Actually, I'm hoping for the opposite. I want the devs to break them up. I mean, come on. Jim's girlfriend gets kidnapped and is in mortal danger, so he... stands there waiting for a hero to come by and rescue her?Admittedly, I think it would be nice if there were a Fusionette/Faultline wedding event, similar to the Manticore/Psyche one from a few years back. What can I say? I'm a big softie sometimes
Oh, hells no. She deserves someone a lot better. Can you imagine when they're 80 years old? "Honey, I've fallen and I think I might have broken my hip!" "Wow, that sucks, sweetie pie. I'll just walk outside and wait around for a while. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will stop who can call 911 for you."
What an angsty jerk. -
Quote:I think--emphasis on think--that with the XP and prestige boosters that you can get now, the developers don't intend to have any more "Double XP Weekends." Add to that it was really to encourage old players to return to the game for a month or so and try out new features, which is kind of moot now that they can return any time they want to and play for free, I just don't think we're going to have Double XP weekends any more. Also, there used to be a fair number of people who would complain, "I have to work that weekend," or "I'm going to be out of town," or whatever. It's almost that time of year, although there is never a set date for Double XP weekend. Any word?
Again, emphasis on think. I believe that the XP boosters are intended to be "Double XP whenever you want" solution. I'd be a bit surprised if we ever have another.
As a side note, I think that's a good thing. I always hated Double XP Weekends. In my opinion, it brought out the worst in people. The nastiness factor always bumped up the scale a bit because people were always trying to speed run stuff on Double XP Weekends. God forbid, if you did anything that affected their precious XP-per-second stat, you'd get cussed out and/or kicked. If they don't have them any more, I say good riddance. -
Quote:This is poorly stated, but I could actually agree with it. I get very irritated at people who, when you're trying to lead a team, decide that they know best and ignore the leader, going off and doing their own thing. It's especially annoying when people do stuff like decide, even in the face of the leader asking them not to, to stealth missions.Rule #1: I am always in charge. You dont like it get off my team.
However... Notice how I said "could" and not "do"? That's because...
Quote:Rule #2: Dont question my tactics. Dont like it see rule number 1.
A good leader listens to people who he or she is leading. This doesn't mean that you have to do what it is they're asking; ultimately as the leader, you are in charge. However, by being this inflexible, your first rule above which, by itself, sounds like a poorly stated rule-of-thumb with some merit behind it, comes off more like a huge ego trip.
I've always found it much better as a team leader to at least address teammates' concerns when they're expressed. If it's not a major inconvenience or you don't have any compelling reason not to do what they're asking, suck it up and do it. Maybe it means that it will take longer to finish the mission. Who cares? I'm not here to watch a clock, I'm here to hang out and have fun. And sometimes, I've found interesting things and people precisely because I don't really care whether something takes 20 minutes or an hour.
So yeah, I really was ready to stick up for you, but instead, I'm going to have to pretty much hope like the others that I don't accidentally get stuck on your team. I'm sure if I do, the second I get an inkling of your "GTFO" attitude, the experience will be rather short-lived.
On a more serious note, my main rule is not to worry so much about failure. As others have pointed out numerous times, it's just a game. So you got defeated in a mission. So what? It has always at least passingly amused me how upset some people get if they, for example, fail a trial. What, do you never plan on doing another one? Did you have something more important to do with that 20 minutes like, I dunno, watch something crappy on television? Shoot, even now we have a bickerfest thread going on about botching the spring fling mission ritual and getting a small debuff.
I can't help but roll my eyes when people complain so much about how it's destroying their fun. I just want to smack 'em and boggle at how little it takes to pee on their parade.
I have spent countless hours of wasted time in this game doing things that are wholly unproductive. And almost without exception, I have never come away from it angry. The few times I did, it was because someone was deliberately being stupid, not because of the time I'd put into it. The game is my hobby. Some people spend hours on a golf course positively sucking, but as they say, a bad day on the golf course beats a good day at work every time. That kind of captures the essence of how I feel about the game. -
1) Don't store passwords in clear text.
2) (related to 1) Don't allow passwords to be reverse-engineered. Worst-case scenario, just make the user reset it.
3) Don't make users give their real names if they don't want to.
4) Don't e-mail crap to people unless they've explicitly said they want whatever it is I think is so important.
5) No third-party ads. Not only are they annoying, but it's a good way to get compromised.
6) Allow users to control how much/how little of their own information is publicly accessible.
7) Don't allow people to post naughty things. Personally, I don't care, but out of respect for other people and to stay on NCsoft's/Paragon Studios good side, it's a good rule.
8) When NCsoft/Paragon Studios asks you to do something, try your best to be responsive and accommodating. They can make you and they can break you.
9) Treat the other developers and editors as if they're smart, even if you think they're being boneheaded. They really are smart, and it might be me that's being boneheaded. Still...
10) Don't let them do something that you fundamentally know is wrong.
...
What? That's how I roll. Aren't we talking about playing City of Heroes? That's how I spend most of my time playing...
