The best scenario I heard was the rumor of a (fairly big name) business owner who wants to take over and host the servers himself, and hire as much of Paragon as he can to run the game. He expected that to be about half of the current crew until the revenue stream stabilized (i.e., everyone who was subscribed before the announcement learned that the game was back), at which point he'd bring the studio back to full size and productivity. (I believe this scenario also involves the game data - accounts and characters and such - being intact. The rumored buyer in question is himself a CoH player, as well as the owner of his own game company, and he was looking forward to I24 as much as the rest of us, so he'd definitely want the updates to continue, under the same team if possible)
Since it's just a rumor, I won't name the business-owner in question.
That would, of course, be among the best of the best-case scenarios. (Even if the rumor is true, that's just what he wants to do, and whether NC Soft would play ball is another matter entirely) So I don't expect that.
But I can hope for it, or something like it, even as I prepare for the worst. -

Worse still, from a customer-relations perspective, is that they've said nothing about refunding subscription time or points. That's something that should have been communicated to customers within 24 hours of the announcement of the game closing (if not as part of the game-closing announcement), yet here it is, more than two weeks later, and there's been no information.
In fact, NC Soft has themselves said nothing about CoH at all, including that the game was being closed. The only communication has come from Paragon.
And that's... disconcerting, at best.
Of course, I'd rather have the game continue and I'd be more than glad to continue paying to subscribe, but they shouldn't get to both kill the game AND keep our money. -

(And, btw, although it may be true that you can't add electric damage to melee attacks, you could use electric form in melee range. That'd approximate the aesthetic of an electric-themed melee character. The only problem is that electric form is an offensive passive, so you'd be limited defensively.)
So, basically, it'd just be a pretty visual with no actual effect. -

For one... Not really. You can play an electric character with electric blasts AND melee attacks at the same time. I believe there are toggle powers which add elemental damage to all of your other attacks, though I can't speak for the visuals. And I'm not saying this by inference. I actually met a fellow City of Heroes player there who showed me a hybrid energy blaster martial artist whose fighting style looked AMAZING in action. I wouldn't have called it, but combining the two sets looked good. Good enough to make me want to see what Inna would have been like with those powers.
I've been looking through the Champions Wiki. There are no powers that add electric damage (or any energy or elemental damage) to melee attacks.
Here is the full Electric powerset in CO.
Out of fourteen powers, four of them are single-target blasts, four of them are multi-target blasts, one is a PBAoE, one is a hold (with an interruptible casting time), one is a passive buff to what CO calls "energy" damage and electric resist, one is a click buff to all damage, one is a passive that restores energy if certain actions are performed, and one replaces your Block with an electric block that reduces damage by less but damages nearby foes while its active.
That's it. There's no powers in there that adds electric damage to melee attacks, let alone any actual electric melee attacks. There's no electric-elemental immobilizes, stuns, or pets. There's no drains or heals (self or otherwise).
And I'm just using electricity as an example, mind you. Fire and Ice do have pets and Ice has a lot more self-buffs, but other than that they just have the same types of attacks.

I generally like that show, but I can't help feeling the writers delight in making Hal the butt monkey of the universe. I want to cheer for him as he conquers evil, not watch him get beaten up by trainee squirrels and mocked by an overblown egomaniac.

But your statement is still valid, if it missed a minor point.
By which I mean, for example, if you make a Warrior in WoW, you get all the same attacks that every other WoW Warrior gets. It's determined the second you select "Warrior" as your class.
But if you make, say, a Corruptor in CoH, the only thing you're guaranteed to get (that's unique to Corruptors) is the ability to Scourge, and it's the actual powersets you select after that that determine how this particular character plays. -

Besides, Aim is pointless in CO. You never completely "miss".
My point was not whether Electric Blast was better or worse than the entire CO Electric Powerset.
My point was that blasting is your only option for a CO Electric character, with no equivalent of Electric Melee, Electric Armor, Electric Control, or even Electricity Manipulation.
And that point was itself secondary to noting that all elemental and energy-based powersets are like this in CO.
If you want to play an elemental character in CoH, you can play a Scrapper, a Tanker, a Controller, a Defender, a Blaster, a Corruptor, a Brute, a Stalker, or a Dominator, or a Mastermind - i.e., any AT.
If you want to play an elemental character in CO, you can be a blaster, period, the end, no other options.
THAT is my point, not a random unrelated discussion whether endurance drain mechanics are good or not. -
And those "classes" only shared one inherent ability by default. Even the same class could feel entirely different depending on powersets. Not only doesn't a Brute play like a Defender, but a Storm/Fire Defender doesn't play like an Empathy/Ice Defender.

The post was long, so I didn't want to quote it in full, but I wanted to leave the link to it. Because I agree with it entirely.
Someone earlier in this thread said that CO's Earth set beat CoH's Earth "set"... which is something I don't see at all, particularly in that CO has one Earth set (which, like most of CO's elemental and energy sets, is a mix of ranged attacks and PBAoEs, with exactly one single-target melee attack), while CoH has six of them, covering a wide variety of concepts (Melee, Armor, Assault, Control, and two Epic power sets, one for Brutes/Tanks, one for Controllers). Concepts were further helped by being able to make the attacks look like regular stone, lava, or crystal. My next dominator was probably going to be Earth Control/Earth Assault, which is impossible to create in CO. (The Earth Assault part, maybe, but not the Earth Control)
Same for fire, ice, electricity, energy, etc. If you want to use those elements in CO, then you can shoot blasts of that element, and that's the only option. Their entire Electricity powerset, for example, is pretty much CoH's Electric Blast, but without any of the powers that make Electric Blast unique or interesting (no Aim, no Short Circuit, no Voltaic Sentinel) and a lot of redundancy (with several single-target blasts, several AoE blasts, one short-duration hold, and one PBAoE). There's certainly nothing remotely like Electric Melee, Electric Armor, Electrical Manipulation, or Electric Control. The same goes for fire, ice, darkness, psychic powers, and plain old generic "energy". You can only blast.
That's why its elemental system limits concepts despite the freeform power selection.
As for CoH "training" people to expect elemental punches....
City of Heroes was released in 2004. The first Pokemon game (which contains skills explicitly called Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Thunder Punch) was released in Japan in 1996 and the US in 1998. M. Bison (the dictator) had psycho-powered flaming fists and Chun Li an ki-powered energy punch in Street Fighter II in 1991, and Ken got into the act with his flame Shoryuken in Champion Edition a year later. Back in 1988, the way you proved you were a Bad Dude (bad enough to rescue President Ronnie) involved charging your punches with fire. Thunder Punch He-Man, a toy released in 1985, has his arm wreathed in (plastic) lightning. And so on and so forth, further and further back.
City of Heroes didn't invent elemental or energy punches, not by a long shot. It's just the only superhero MMO that lets you actually make characters with them. -

Problem is a whirling dervish of psychic knives is not even close to what I was talking about. When I said "energy", I meant all the non-physical melee attacks that exist in CoH - not just Energy Melee, but Fire Melee, Ice Melee, Energy Melee, Dark Melee, and especially Electric Melee.
Heck, I've had an old tabletop character who's been "electric melee" (plus what amounts to Lightning Field from Electric Armor / Electricity Manipulation) since long before I ever even heard of City of Heroes. I used those sets in CoH because I was using them before CoH, not because CoH has "trained" me to expect them.
I like CoH's sheer variety of different elemental and energy-based powersets (most have ranged, melee, control, buff/debuff, and even armor variants) compared to CO (which has ranged elemental/energy attacks, maybe with a single one-off PBAoE attack, CC power, or self-buff... and that's it)
The freeform build in CO is really nice... but only if the powers I want are actually there. For the most part, they're not. -
What I don't like about CO powers is that there's no way to make any energy-based melee class (fire, ice, electricity, etc., are all ranged attacks). It's also very light on crowd control powers (so there's no way to make a Controller or Dominator analogue, let alone the wide variety of Control powers that CoH has) and the Support role basically means "healbot," without the dazzling array of buffs and debuffs that CoH has. (In fact, there are complaints on the CO forums that what few buffs and debuffs there are barely work at all, and some were even nerfed recently so that bigger enemies can just ignore them) And the archetypes are, apparently, explicitly designed around the Holy Trinity, so they're more difficult to solo with (because you'll always be missing 2/3 of the Trinity).
As much as it's the closest thing to CoH outside of CoH (and seems to have a nice community), it's going to take some getting used to if it turns out to be the only choice. -
Now I kinda want to make an Empathy/Archery (or perhaps Empathy/Psychic Blast) Defender loosely based on Talia from the Heralds of Valdemar series in honor of this development, but I don't know if Ms. Lackey would be flattered or insulted by that.

I already commented earlier in this thread, but the situation has gotten worse. Here it is, more than a week after the fact, and NC Soft has yet to deliver the promised announcements about refunds.
Four days ago, I thought they handled it badly. In the time since then, my opinion on how they handled it and continue to handle it has only gotten worse. We should have been informed about refunds on the 31st, or, failing that, on the following Monday (or Tuesday, if it turns out that Korea actually celebrates Labor Day) at the absolute latest. Instead, here it is, more than a week later, and nothing. Their Support e-mail is just giving out canned replies, they're apparently ignoring Zwillinger's requests for information, and my opinion of them continues to get worse and worse.
Not my enemy? Maybe, but they're certainly not going out of their way to win any Friendship awards.
The only thing that would improve them in my eyes right now is announcing that they're holding off on giving out refund information because they're having second thoughts on shutting down the game after all, and re-hiring everyone from Paragon back, and development on I24 resumes next week, and here's some free Paragon points to everyone - VIP, Premium, and Free - as an apology, and they'll instead save money by firing the guy who suggested shutting the game down in the first place.
Wishful thinking, I know.

Mercedes Lackey didn't just offer to promote City of Heroes, she offered to promote all NC Soft games, as a spokesman for the entire company (since primarily known as a fantasy author, and most of their games are fantasy-based). For free. For five to ten years.
And all they have to do is un-cancel the game, or set it free - just let it keep running in some way, shape, or form.
I read the Heralds of Valdemar trilogy and the Mage Storm trilogy, and really enjoyed them both. I'm still sorry I had to sell those when I moved overseas.
I still greet people in game (and elsewhere on the Internorf) with "Heyla" -
The servers are all virtual. "Merging" them would do nothing (at least, nothing that saves money), because they're not hosted on separate machines to begin with.
But that's all water under the bridge. There are many many things NCSoft could have done other than jump out of the bushes shouting "booga booga" and waving pinkslips, but that's what they did do, and that's the situation that has to be dealt with.
(But, for the record.. heck, yeah, I'd subscribe for a year in advance - at the full $15/month price, even, not the discounted price for buying more than one month of time at once - if it'd keep the game going) -
The way I see it is that the petition is not, by itself, a weapon. The rally in Atlas is not, in itself, a weapon. All these things that show community support are not, themselves, weapons.
They are ammunition.
There are Big Guns who are also trying to keep the game open (a lot of celebrities play CoH and also don't want to see the game go, and there are hints that what remains of Paragon Studios is fighting for its survival), and they need these shows of support. (In the case of Paragon, they've said directly to keep these shows of support coming)
NC Soft is probably not going to listen to the players directly, but we can and are spurring others - people that NC Soft will listen to - into action. -
I shudder to think how much disk space that would require, too.

I keep wanting to play CO, despite all my ranting in this topic. Mainly, I think I was just taking out all my anger at NC Soft out on the game itself. I was mad at it for not being CoH, but for being close enough to CoH to constantly remind me of it.
Maybe. The "No Native Mac Client" thing is still the biggest hurdle, and they don't look to be developing one any time soon. Or ever. -
Now that some of the rage is gone, I'm almost certainly going back to Dofus, which is... absolutely nothing like CoH. Really, my biggest problem with it is me. I much prefer to solo, and Dofus (especially at higher levels) is not a solo-friendly game. The devs also like to put the focus on tactical thinking and team cooperation rather than simply steamrolling battles, so you can't just jump in and start tearing through monsters, which is sometimes exactly what I want to do. But I know lots of people there, and the summer event is going on right now (just extended for two weeks, in fact), and I have some decently high-level characters there, so I'll probably resubscribe. (It's only $7 a month, or $60 for a whole year, so that's no strain on my budget)
Kingdom of Loathing is not really a MMO. It's online, and there are other people there, but the gameplay is almost strictly single-player (with some minimal interaction in the high-level Clan Dungeons). It's mostly text with simple graphics, which hides weirdly deep game systems. It has a pretty friendly community and helpful to new players, though the long-time vets are all irreverent, sarcastic, and just a touch cynical - kinda like the game itself, really. Also, don't use txt-speak. They hate that. No subscription required - all the content is free. (You can donate for special items that change each month, but the devs work hard to make them helpful but not game-breaking. They're not "required" unless you want to be on the bleeding edge of speed gameplay, and even then only a few specific ones are required)
Despite my initial problems with it (which I've ranted about at length), I'd actually probably subscribe to Champions Online just for the Freeform Characters that would let me realize some concepts that I couldn't do in CoH (including a beloved tabletop RP character, who would best be described as a Martial Arts/Electric Melee/Super Reflexes/Electric Blast Dodge Tank), but they don't have a Mac Version, so unless I can get it running stably on my four-year-old laptop (which is an iffy proposition at best - even CoH isn't always stable and is a CPU hog), I won't subscribe.
... I've also been playing Toontown Online a bit this past week, primarily because it's nothing like CoH and doesn't rub salt in the wound. It's not great by any means, but it's mindless and has some nice music. (I just don't talk to anyone there, knowing they're probably all kids one-quarter my age or younger. Which is made easier by the fact that the chat system sucks)
