Oddly enough, I wanted to go into teaching when I graduated High School. I was talked out of it by a counselor for the agency that was paying for my college education.

I've never used my degree in programming, and have branched into the Hardware side of computers instead.

I'm now working in my hometown School District in the Technology Department. After seeing how the students behave in class and how much disrespect they show to any adults, on campus or elsewhere, I'm glad I got talked out of being a teacher.

I'd have wound up in jail years ago.

I believe this post is just such a response to the whining.
  3. Had it been me, I'd have looked at the Announcement made yesterday by Freitag.

The Live European and North America City of Heroes servers will be offline for a short maintenance on Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

    Start Time: 4:00 a.m. PDT / 7:00 a.m. EDT / 12:00 p.m. BST / 13:00 CEST
    Expected Duration: 2 hours
    Expected Finish Time: 6:00 a.m. PDT / 9:00 a.m. EDT / 2:00 p.m. BST / 15:00 CEST

This is just a short but necessary maintenance and as such no patch note will be available.

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience!
That section of the forums is called Announcements for a reason.

Connected to that, I have a ~$1600 gaming computer (including the 24" monitor), my wireless router (~$99), the power injector for my wireless ISP's antenna, a network print server , 2 ~$150 inkjet printers, a second 19" monitor, and at times another computer tower that I'm repairing.

It's well worth the piece of mind knowing that, from past experience, my equipment isn't likely to be damaged due to a lightning strike (from my previous post you'll see I've had several direct hits), a power outage that throws massive surges down the powerlines, or even damage to my equipment from the various spikes and dropouts that we get on these old power lines.

Since I'm often working on other people's computers, I'd rather not have to worry about them either.

It's a small price to pay for peace of mind, and well worth it.

There is also the information screen in the launcher which can easily keep the player base informed so no one gets confused.
When they switched to the one day a week maintenance schedule we had servers located on the West Coast and servers located on the East Coast. It is entirely possible that the two locations were owned by different companies and that one or both of those companies balked at a varying schedule. Even if they were owned by the same company, it's possible that that company balked at a changing schedule. We don't know all of the details because they didn't tell us all of the details, nor did they have to. They gave us what information we needed to know about the schedule change and that they had considered other options. They didn't even have to tell us that, but they did.

I don't know if the weekly maintenance times have been re-thought since all of the servers are now in one location. I don't know who the company hosting the server farms is, but they may also not be willing to work on a rotating schedule for maintenance since it would impact them scheduling work on other companies servers they maintain, just like the previous server hosting companies.

As for the screen in the launcher being used for posting the schedule, there were many players that never saw that information with the old launcher since it relied on Internet Explorer to display. Some had IE issues on their computers. Some had intentionally disabled or uninstalled IE, so they couldn't see those updates. Many never bothered to read the information presented there. A good recent example of this was the discontinuance of the old launcher. The information was there for quite some time, but several people were clueless when the old launcher stopped working.

You said earlier in the post that you wanted to hear from a Dev about this. I'm not a Dev, but I can tell you what I remember them saying from when this change was made. I never made any claims as to whether or not I agreed with their statements, I just repeated them.

Now, as for me quoting part of the EULA and noting that you might want to reread it, it was mostly due to some of your earlier comments in the thread.

From those statements, it seems that a large part of your complaint is about money.

The UPS is more of a battery back-up. They are meant to give you time to shut down so you don't lose data.

If the power surge did damage something on your computer, check your surge protector. They sometimes have warranties that protect anything connected through them up to a certain value. You can get the parts replaced then.

I guess the question is, does the power go out often there? A UPS would only really be worth the expense then, since they are not cheap.
Actually, a good quality UPS does more than just battery backup. They also do line conditioning to deal with over-voltage and under-voltage states like spikes and drops. Often they can reliably handle a higher Joule rating than surge protectors as well.
  7. Texas Justice

    Ups ?

From prior experience, Surge Protectors are semi-decent (depending on the device rating) for dealing with minor surges but not with anything more than that.

You mentioned a lightning strike and I've had several experiences with those. My house was struck 4 times in a 3 year span. Various items in the house were affected in different ways each time, mostly by changes we made in how we protected some of the equipment.

During the first lightning strike, we lost the monitor (on the business computer) that was still turned on, a Laser printer and the modem in my computer. Luckily, both computers were turned off at the time. The modem got blown through the phone jack due to a surge through an electrical line that crossed over the phone line in the attic. I rerouted all of the phone lines after that so that they weren't lying near electrical lines and had no more problems.

For the computers, we started with trying to go with surge protectors with high Joule ratings and still lost equipment. One of the items we lost was a Laser Printer. This was back in the early to mid 90's when Laser printers were definitely a luxury item. I think we paid somewhere around 900 for the printer when it was new. The replacement was around 700 and we didn't replace the second one when it went out. Inkjet printers had improved enough in quality by then to let us get away from the higher quality that the Laser printer produced.

When the business computer got blasted in the second lightning strike, even with high priced and high Joule rated surge protectors, we had to buy a new computer. After discussing it with some Tech friends we decided to go ahead and buy a UPS when we bought the new computer. After getting the UPS and the new computer, we didn't have any more trouble on the computer and printer side of things with the next two lightning strikes.

We installed a complex ground-rod system to handle our CB radio, tower, rotor and antenna after burning up various components and having major repairs on the radio. After getting this configured correctly, we had no more damage on any of that equipment.

We installed surge protectors with extremely high Joule ratings and Coax connectors on our Televisions, Satellite receivers and TV antenna equipment. After those changes, we stopped having problems with those as well. We had one LNB go out on a dish, but we put it on a similar ground-rod scheme we were using with the CB equipment and had no further damage to the LNBs.

They had a few more direct strikes while I was in Colorado, and nothing of what we had changed the protection on was affected at all.

I had learned my lessons in all of this and bought a new UPS while living in Colorado. I wasn't getting direct lightning strikes, but one of my apartment complexes was constantly having surges, spikes and brown-outs and my computers were never affected. I had two computers running 24/7 since I had an FTP site on one and the other was just convenient to leave on in case I needed to remote in to look at specific hardware settings or other files that weren't on the FTP server.

We had an accident right next to the apartment complex one night when a driver took out one of the electrical poles that had transformers mounted on it. I had no damage at all to either of the computers, any of the three printers or the two monitors. All were on at the time. Others in the apartment complex had computers totally blown out at the time since they were merely "on" at the time. The only other people I talked to that didn't have any problems were two that had their computers turned off at the time and one that also had a good UPS on his system, mostly due to conversations we had had in the past.

After moving back to Texas, I've replaced one UPS and bought two more to go on my video equipment and DVRs instead of surge protectors. I've had a few hard outages that have blown lights, but no damage to any of the equipment.

A few things to keep in mind. Always buy a quality UPS, not something cheap. Cheaper units tend to not protect against the surges and drops as well as quality units do. That is the most important factor for me since I'm in a rural area and see my lights dim at times and (as noted) have had direct lightning strikes on the house. For brand, I stick with APC since they've always been reliable for me. I have the added benefit that if I need a replacement battery, I can always get one from work until I can make the half-hour drive to the store that sells them.

Make sure it has a high enough rating for what you are trying to protect and power. For home users, it isn't as important to have 100% uptime as it is to protect from the surges, spikes, and drops in power. Also, you want to make sure it has enough outlets to protect all of the items that are essential to protect. Tower, monitor, router and modem are my most essential, but I can also protect my printer and the Print server with my setup.

    tl;dr version

Get a good quality UPS. You'll be glad you did.

The reference to "existing animations can be slightly tweaked" further down is to the existing rifle and/or pistol animations, not the ones that are already part of Trick Arrow.

I have yet to find the gun-based set that has anything resembling Glue Arrow or Oil Slick Arrow.
Stop and think about that for a minute. I'm holding two pistols in my hands and suddenly arrows with a Net on it flies out of the barrels? Yet when it hits it only has one Net?

It would be bad enough with AR or BR, but DP has two emanation points. And that's only one power in the set. Now, you have to generate new animations with different emanation points for three sets. Oh, and the new FX to go with them as well.

That's a lot of work to correct, not a slight tweak.

Something else to think about is reload. You are firing a bullet at the ground that explodes with poison or glue or gas or whatever. And you can do all of this without having to reload to use a different ammo? To change the secondary effect in DP you have to swap ammo, but you usually aren't doing that on every attack, which is what would be required for TA's powers.

Sure, AR has the multi-purpose gun that fires bean bags, bullets, buckshot, grenades and what-have-you, but there are limitations on what can be deemed believable with handguns versus rifles.

EDIT: Besides, who in their right mind fires a gun at the ground? Guns are for firing at people, animals, or targets.

Is it annoying? Of course it is.

Is it worth violating the forum rules and chancing having my forum privileges revoked? Not in the slightest.
  10. IIRC, when they went to the new maintenance schedule instead of the daily schedule, they mentioned that they had looked at several alternatives, including varying maintenance times in order to not always affect the same groups of players.

One of the reasons that they decided against that varying schedule is that it made it difficult on the server operations crew to schedule other work around it and the inconsistent times would be confusing for players. With a set time every week, yes, it affects the same players all the time, but everyone knew when it would be going on.

You may want to re-read the User Agreement that you agree to every time you access the game (also known as the EULA), particularly section 10.

    Quote:

    (c) NC Interactive has the right at any time for any reason or no reason to change and/or eliminate any aspect(s) of the Service as it sees fit in its sole discretion.
    (d) NC Interactive shall not be obligated to refund all or any portion of any Account fee or Additional Feature fee by reason of any interruption of the Service by reason of any of the circumstances described in paragraph (a) or (b).
Yeah, that's been in the EULA since day one.

    Brooch 51

Coloring Scheme is also my consistency, 3rd Blue from the left, 3rd Red from the Left, occaisional uses of White (far right selection) mostly in Belt and on Chest Detail.

And of course, Texas in the name. I have 2 throwaway characters without Texas in the name (one created for an event, one created as a joke with a former co-worker) and 2 actually played characters without Texas in the name, although one can be deduced as being mine by color scheme and chest detail.

If there is a team that designs floor maps/new maps, it's easy to pull one from that team and tell him to work on a fix.

It's been years now, why hasn't anyone stepped up and try to fix this?

It's not the fault of the team members, the people in charge are to blame for not placing someone on this.

And THAT, is what i think.
At the Bay Area Meet & Greet last year, they were introducing some of the new staff. One of those was on the World team. They told us a brief story about shortly after he was hired. It went something like this:

After being hired he brought up several longstanding issues that still hadn't been resolved. He was told to go through the Bug list, find something he wanted to work on fixing and then come back to them when he had a plan. He selected an even older problem than the one you are talking about and went about trying to find a way to fix it. He came back to them very perplexed because he couldn't find any way to fix the issue without causing major problems in several other more important areas of the game. It had long been determined by the Dev team that this was a problem they'd not be able to fix without a major rewrite to multiple systems, and since it was a relatively minor problem in the big picture, it would just have to stay as it is.

    -------------------------

That being said, I tend to think that the problem in the LGTF may be similar. It may look easy to fix from the outside, but once you start digging into it and trying to find a fix for it you find that any fixes you try would break multiple other systems.

As for the MM zoning bug, I think much of it is that they can't reproduce the issue 100% of the time, and every fix they "think" they've found seems to work for a bit and then suddenly, with no other changes, it happens again.

Either that, or fixing it would require them to totally remove the code allowing the pets to zone. If that is what is happenening and since /releasepets is a known workaround, it's possible that a decision was made internally to leave it as is.

How does my statement go against your wording of "slightly tweaked" or "duplicated". It certainly can't be duplicated since the animations are extremely different, as my post nots. And it would take more than slight tweaks, it would basically be a fully new animation.

Exactly. It would have to be new animations.

He is talking about different animations or "slightly tweaking" or "duplicated" animations, which, as I've pointed out, won't work. It would require entirely new animations, just as Bubbawheat mentioned.

It is entirely possible that it is related. In Safe Mode it is sending much less information because the graphics settings are much lower. It's entirely possible that it's flooding the network with the normal settings.

One of the tests I used to do at work (Technical Support for a manufacturer of wireless adapters and routers) was massive gaming sessions with several players over wireless and taking readings of the data packets sent and received, how many were dropped, etc. Distance and interference with the signal would always cause more drops. Heavy graphics data would often cause dropouts.

  16. Really? When I use my Dual Pistols I don't push one hand out straight in front of me and then pull my other hand from a set spot to a point near my jawbone.

I don't do that with a Rifle either.

We already have Assault Rifle, we already have Dual Pistols, we'll Soon™ have the availabilty to purchase Beam Rifle. Why would we need to skin a powerset dealing with a bow into a powerset dealing with firearms when we have powersets dealing with those already? Especially when the animations are actually nothing alike.
  17. One other thought just hit. I see an entry for a Netgear wireless adapter listed. Is this through a wireless connection? If so, can you connect it via ethernet to your cable modem/dsl modem/router or whatever you use to access the internet?
  18. Could be related to the onboard Firewall and Network Access Manager.

Some firewall programs have trouble at times when an application executable gets updated and don't recognize it as being the same executable file that was given access permissions previously.

You may want to try going into all the nVidia NAM stuff and re-authorizing the executables for the game.

The only other thing I can see that "might" somehow cause a problem is all of the VMWare services running in that they may be redirecting something. I keep my VMWare stuff set to manual so that I don't have to worry about those types of things, and it's only on my laptop anyway. Since I see very few HJT logs with VMWare entries, it's "possible" that this could be be causing your issues.
