  1. Ahh, accolades, that explains it. I've tried just about every build & enhancement combo I could think of & afford over the years (although I've never accumulated much to invest in sets) but always got distracted by a new alt idea before getting into accolades.

    Thanks for the reply.
  2. Excellent guide C.M.A., with lots of good input from others. Pity some of the early builds' links don't work any more but enough info in the first post to work around it, but...

I have a L50 Invul/Energy tank and for ages I found him frustrating to play because of endurance issues and I was only dealing with the 3 toggles from Invul. Granted, this may be due to my weakness for continually trying out new alts keeping me from really mastering this tank.

Unless I'm mistaken the powers recommended at the start of this thread include SIX toggles (Temp Invulnerability +Unyielding +Combat Jumping +Invincibility +Tough +Weave), how on earth to you cope with the end drain and still maintain any kind of attack chain long enough to take down the crowds of mobs trying (in vain) to kill you?

Now thats a build I'd REALLY like to see.

Seriously, how can a slot that has been filled for OVER 2 years by an inactive toon come up as being locked? I am gonna be PISSED if I lose those names!!! Additionally, I'm so glad I spent $20 on the extra 5 character slots. They're coming in so handy on my favorite server with THIS being the only time I'll be able to play during the next few months. Come on guys, a little communication goes a very long way in situations like this. Maybe a mention of this on the coh home page so people don't lose their favorite character names in a situation similar to mine???

AND I certainly hope that talk of Monday in wrong. As someone in a previous post put it.... that borders on being unacceptable.
I'm SO glad I checked here... I deleted a toon to remake it with a new i16 build only to find the slot locked, two days ago! I was about to start pruning back on my least popular alts so I could get back to my original slots, thinking it was just my purchased slots I'm locked out of, so I could save the deleted name and it seems even that wouldn't have helped. I feel every bit of your frustration Gardo!

Come on devs, how about some reassurance here?

We know a "this will be fixed by X time/date" is too much to ask for, but "we are working on this non-stop" would go a long way to kerbing the growing frustration we're feeling.

And what happens if those of us who did delete a favorite-named alt, intending to recreate it, finally get our slots unlocked only to find someone else got "our" name???

I can tell you that if there's no feedback and I lose the name I was using/intending to re-use, I'm getting annoyed enough there's a couple other MMO's out there I'll be happy to spend my money on instead.

Account maintenance was supposed to be done days ago. Someone forget to the basic "do a backup so you roll back" before things got screwed up? *Sigh* Ok, mistakes happen, but feedback helps a lot.
  4. So here there I was about to re-roll one of my characters, hoping to make a new one with when of the favorite names I had managed to use before. Cleaned out my old toon, deleted him, went to make a new one... and all the extra character slots I bought for my account way back when seem to be gone!

I saw that the "store" was unavailable, but I thought account maintenance was over and done with (on the 23rd).

Is it just me in this predicament or is it something widespread?

Edit: just found this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...90#post2271690

So I know its not just me at least, but I won't be happy if I lose that name I want to keep. :-(
  5. So, in my continuing quest to find a fun brute that suits my particular tastes I've started a Dark Melee/Willpower brute and I'm trying to work out how to make him as strong as I can without delving into the realm of set bonuses.

I don't mean to suggest set bonuses are bad, I'm in awe of what can be achieved by the likes of Bill Z Bubba, Gruumch & kidengineer (like here for instance).

Consider this a mid-term plan, something I can easily set up at L50 and use to start farming the inf & loot I'll need to put a fully optimized sets build together.

I'm hooked on Air Superiority/Flight for travel & a tactical option, I don't feel right without taking taunt (hangover from my tanking habits) or Shadow Maul (its another AOE! albeit an often tricky one to use) so I'm loathe to abandon those powers. Shadow Punch on the other hand I'm not hooked on and I'm tempted to replace for Hasten if I can get used to Boxing instead to pad out the odd attack chain.

For now though, this is the build I'm considering:

Ideally I'd like to be able to lead the charge on 8-man teams without regularly falling to the alpha and I'd like to the endurance to sustain my attacks for a good long while.

Does it look like I'm on the right track?
  6. I've been trying to find archetype guides/builds using the forum search function & the common abbreviations for powerset combinations, DM/WP for a Dark Melee/WillPower brute for example.

Using both simple and advanced searches I keep getting "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms".

Looking at the brutes forum, I see there is a thread entitled "WM/WP - Questions on SoftCap and on Build Strategy" so for a test I searched for WM/WP, no matches.

    Then I tried: wm/wp

    Then I tried: "WM/WP"

    Then I tried: ***WP

All "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms".

So I thought, hmm, maybe I've got cookies blocked or something. So I tried searching for "softcap" (without the quotes). Heaps of hits.

So, seeing as how the abbreviations seem to be used much more than the full names, how do I search for powerset abbreviations (eg: "DM/WP")?

Pretty hard to find guides if I can't search for the most common abbreviations. Plenty of the guides I've ready hardly mention the full set names, if at all.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

(Apologies if I should be posting in a different forum)

Wow, thanks, going to be a long time before I can afford even one purple set but it gives me a good target to work towards.

I took Tough for the extra S/L resistance when fighting Freakshow, Nemesis, and certain enemy types in MA missions. I don't have my build with me at the moment but I'll try and post it if I remember, when I get home.
Actually I went with Soul Mastery mostly because I prefer the SM graphics over the other patron powers' graphics, and SM blasts are the most fire/smoke-like of all the PPPs' so it fits closest with the look of my fire powers. Sadly, I generally can't let go of "looks" to use more "effective" powers most of the time. If I don't like the look I lose interest & can't play it.

I say you can get rid of that in order to get RoF. If the mob you are facing is still standing after getting hit with a Kinetics-buffed RoF-Fireball-Fire Breath combo, then the mob will probably still be standing after Inferno. And you don't want to be helpless if that happens.
This is another one of those "can't let go" situations. I can't imagine playing Fire Blasting without taking the tier 9 power. So far the changes I've implemented following the discussions here have made a big difference already, so I think I can stick with my current plan and enjoy it even if its not the perfect min/max setup.

    <Snipped for space>

slapped together qick to illustrate softcap
... but THAT is so simply effective it makes me headslap myself.

Building on your code, I put together a new build that lets me keep Air Superiority instead of Hover, still lets me hit the cap & (hopefully) improves my endurance. I'll just have to learn to live with Boxing.

After a frustrating time trying to be a competent Dominator I had come to the conclusion that I couldn't avoid getting hit so I might as well aim for surviving getting hit. The feedback I've received here (especially the recommendations of optimal slotting) has been more helpful than any of the guides I've been able to find and I think I'm beginning to see the light.

Thank you! Your build is extremely helpful. I don't know if I bring myself to let go of both Air Superiority (a long time sentimental favorite) and Soul Mastery (my favorite of the Patron Power pools) but I will definitely be taking on board everything else.

I've got a few levels to go yet before I have to really commit to a patron choice (yes I know I can respec but I don't want to waste any inf on sets I respec out of), maybe I'll get to like the mace after all.

    Thanks again.
  11. Ok, trying to work in the advice I've received to improve my original priorities, please tell me what you think about this build...

I know I've got a long ways to go before I can make this build happen, but having an end goal will be a big help.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

I would love to see your build BigBrotherMidas, there seems to be a distinct lack of examples of what is considered very good. Or maybe its my search skills that a lacking, either way it would be greatly appreciated.

Ooh, excellent point. Completely overlooked the lack of accuracy enhancement. I think I'll go for Theft of Essence if I can find it (& afford it).

I've had a lot more luck since I respec'd to the L35 SO version of the build I posted (at L38 myself now too). Starting to wonder how much trouble I was having was due to luck/learning curve as much as my build though.

I don't think I'll even warm to CJ/SJ for a travel set, but I didn't think of the aggro aspect of Soul Drain, or the mitigation effect of Rain of Fire either. I'll definitely swap out Soul Drain for Aim. What to drop for RoF though. Decisions, decisions.

    Thanks for the ideas!
  14. Thanks for the reply MinMin, let me answer point by point...

In fact, you'd get more bang for your buck out of putting a couple more slots of endurance reduction here than most of the places you currently put endurance reduction.
    • This was a hard decision, but after reading I could turn it into a damage source I thought it worth the effort. The end cost was why I looked for every +Recovery bonus I could squeeze in, with the periodic end boost from Dominate hopefully keeping me running.

    • I thought the end crash from Hasten on top of AA would be too tough to cover and I couldn't see how to spare many slots for it either.

    • Taking Basilisks to 6 slots gives me two +10% Regenerations which I thought worth the effort. I expect to get hit. I'm hoping my powers will slow down the hits enough that good Regen will keep me alive.

    • The Efficacy Adaptor gives me Regen and a much needed (I think) damage boost. I was under the impression the +End proc was worth it for the last slot, compared to the dimishing returns on another End Mod enhancement. I concede I may need more research on that one.

  15. Thanks heaps for the replies. I haven't had time to factor them into my planning yet but I'll have a serious look at how to factor the suggestions in.

I do recall trying to squeeze in a full set of Gaussian's & Steadfast but I couldn't figure out where to take slots away from to pad out Gaussians. I agonised over Medicine/First Aid vs Fighting/Tough etc but again couldn't see what slots to sacrifice to make the Fighting pool worthwhile. Air Superiority & Fly have long been favorites so I couldn't bring myself to give them up either.

For now, here's the build I was currently working towards (in time i'll swap out Touch of Death for Mako's Bite, but for now I think this is more affordable):

I don't expect I'll ever be able to fit myself into a build capable of passing a RWZ challenge, but a fighting chance against the odd AV would be nice.
  16. I've got a FM/SR brute to 50 and while its a lot of fun most of the time I still face-plant often enough (usually from a couple of hard hits that drop me before I can hit a heal) that I feel the need to start seriously working toward my caps.

Sadly I've yet to find much in the way of guidance, either on the brute or the scrapper boards.

If anyone can offer or point me toward some guidance it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a build I've been working toward but won't be able to post it until I get home...
  17. I've been struggling to level up an Ice/Ice dominator and I'm trying to plan ahead to a build that will be more fun than it has been so far (currently I'm 31). I haven't found any recent builds on the forum, so I figured I should work one out for myself and see how it measures up to those much wiser in this area than myself.

I made this build with four priorities:
    1. Avoid the endurance nightmares I had leveling up;
    2. Forget about immobilize powers (I agree with Artillery_MKV: I’m not a fan of immobilizes for Doms, they draw too much agro without stopping attacks);
    3. Forget about purple sets, their cost is too far out of my budget; &
    4. Since my powers will slow down my enemies' attacks/hits, but not stop them, try to heal faster than they can kill me.

So here's my build. With Arctic Air and Dark Embrace running My Recovery should be sitting on 192% (or 3.21/s vs EndDrain 1.08/s) and My Regen will be 306%. Hopefully that'll keep me active and alive.

If you've got experience leveling up Ice/Ice dominators, or can see better ways to meet my priorities, please let me know if you see anything I can improve on. Thanks.

  18. I'm by no means an expert but it looks like you'll face the same trouble I've been having on my fire/kin - how do you survive combat long enough to finish an attack chain against even a small spawn.

Fire has no damage mitigation (as far as I can see) and you've got to be at close range to take full effect of your own kin buffs. By the time you've run up and got their attention you're spamming heals to try & recover from their alpha strike... its not pretty.

My fire/kin is stalled until i can figure out a spec that has enough defense to survive. You might want to consider Combat Jumping, Maneuvers and Stealth - all powers I've seen recommended in other threads useful for squeezing in defense bonuses/sets.

I haven't figured out how to survive solo on L1 difficulty yet (in my mid thirties) so I can't offer you a build, just a heads up.

Edit: Here's the build I'm hoping will work for me. I sacrifice a bit of damage output to improve my survival chances and I can't afford all the sets yet by any means but having the build lets me work within the slots I'll eventually "need"...

Edit: and apparently posting this made them go and do it again. Apparently I'm ruining the game by actually knowing how to play it effectively.
For what its worth, MoralisticFallac isn't the only one who values your builds. Explaining reasons why you do things is definitely helpful but even just seeing what possible, and what slotting is necessary to hit the caps, is helpful.

I doubt I'll USE your build exactly as offered (since I'm not numbers driven enough to choose Superjump mostly, but also because I know I'll hear the call of another alt before i can ever afford all the sets) but it When I'm thinking ahead your builds show me possibilities - and limitations.

Thanks Umbral, & thanks to MoralisticFallac too for sharing your build.

You may find you need to experiment with the different powersets to find the ones that fit your prefered play style best.

I tried Storm/Electric and found it hard to use the storm effects to be an obvious aset to my team (& the constant 'windy' noise was annoying)

I tried Trick Arrows/Archery (to L27), loved the look but found it too hard to see the difference I was making.

I tried Rad/Rad (to L28), AM had a much more visible effect on my team mates but it felt more like work than fun.

Then I tried Kinetics/Ice (to L26). Fell in love with kinetics but couldn't get comfortable with the ice attacks - too slow compared to the kinetics powers (MY perception only).

Finally I tried Kinetics/Electric and finally found my match. VERY fast paced build with obvious team boosting and nice damage output after Fulcrum Shift. Hardly touched any of my other toons while I raced him to 50! Its a challenge being a melee-range defender but I can solo him better than I could my fire/kin corruptor. I even deleted all my other defenders except my rad/rad (I sense much potential in him but I think it'll be a few more levels before he takes off).

The moral of this is - experiment & find the combination that suits your taste. I have no doubt all of the defender primaries can assets for teams if played right (you'll find lots of opinions on what "right" is for some primaries though).

In my experience Kinetics and Empathy are the most sought after when I've seen team leaders looking for team members, but I've seen defenders of all types make a welcome difference to teams I've been in.

You know when I read your first post on this thread Turbo Ski, I thought 'wow, thats harsh'. After this post at least now I understand where you were coming from.

Its a pity you didn't start with this post, which actually demonstrates some understanding of the powerset and suggests possibly better strategies, instead of just being purely negative saying "I would have kicked you too".

I was trying to work out how to maximize my endurance so that I could run Leadership (& maybe Fighting) toggles without getting the Fitness pool. Eventually I realised what I wanted wasn't workable so I'll stick with Fitness' Stamina & ignore Fighting's Toughness & Weave.

With recharge out the whazoo & the frequent powers I throw around in combat I have to disagree with your last point - you can't have too much endurance!
  23. Ok, I think I've settled on my build plan. Before I post it I'll outline my reasoning & prioritization in choosing sets.

Firstly I figured I can't be too accurate, have too much recovery or too many defense bonuses.

Most of kin/elec's best powers need to hit to work, so even if I've capped my accuracy I'm happy to add more bonuses to counter having my accuracy debuffed.

So once my powers hit how do I survive long enough to drop my enemies? With my relatively low hit points ANY damage is going to hurt so I'm better off not getting hit all if I can avoid it. So, resistance is nice, but defense is better. That makes Leadership/Maneuvers a prime pool choice. Add in the defense bonuses I can get from 6-slotting Gaussian's Synchronised Fire-Control onto Tactics and that's a must-have too.

After being convinced to take Leadership & selecting Maneuvers and Tactics I realised that will mean running two toggles. Add that to kin/elec's high-speed power activations and I expect to be going through my endurance FAST. Add in the defense bonuses available I can get through the Health & Stamina sets & the Fitness pool becomes very handy. The fact that they are always on doesn't hurt either since I'll already have quite enough powers to choose from in the heat of battle thanks.

So thats my reasoning: I want to hit, I want to avoid getting hit and I want to have the best endurance recovery I can get.

Bearing in mind this is mostly theory (I'm only L47 as of writing this & will need to respec before I can re-slot and start putting my sets together) here's my Mids' build. Opinions are welcome.

Thanks again Amy Amp, I was leaning toward Touch of the Nictus so I'm glad I'm looking in the right direction.

How about Transference? Efficacy Adaptor seems to be the best set for both of those since Performance Shift +Endurance would apparently help my targets, or am I missing something?
  25. Rats. I was hoping to be able to use "Performance Shifter: Chance for +Endurance" on one or more of my Kinetics powers to boost my recovery so I could skip Fitness/Stamina but it seems that would be bad according to Paragon Wiki.

With Transfusion and Transference both targeting off enemies, anyone got any recommendations for the best sets on those powers?
