Kinetic Melee / Shield Defense:
Tanker if you want to easily soft cap to all positions, solo slower, but be a lot tougher.
Scrapper if you want to do more damage, solo more, but spend more inf to get to that soft cap.
Brute if you want to be better at taking damage, chase fury and leverage AAO+PS to do nice damage, be a bit tougher while leveling in both solo and group play, but still have to spend inf to get soft-cappped.
With KM you get a ranged attack and ranged cone (not the best attack as it doesn't build extra damage but its ranged kb might be good for levelling to use as an alpha mitigator). You can use its PBAoE as a follow-up with Shield Charge.
There are great Tech Shields, and the Elemental Shields with electricity and energy work well too. Also, way back when, Iron Man did have a fore-field like shield on his armor. Take the Energy APP and you can get another ranged cone if you want too. -

I got to sit in on a panel that Mr. Martin was at. He described his writing method, wherein he doesn't really plan things out, but rather writes one day. The next morning he goes over what he wrote and if it works, he edits, some days he has to start all over again.
He said it was like building a house without any blue prints. If that's true of his entire series, than should anything ever happen, we may never see its completion. Let's hope that he's a little more dedicated to it that he continues to be healthy and stay around a long time and that he can bring us even more joy with other writings once this series is done -
I must admit, this is the first that I've seen an idea like this posted. The first of 3 characters I immediately made upon installing CoH was a Grav/Kin controller. It was my first 50.
Dimension shift always, garnered so much ire from people I've played with, wether they were RL friends, or random PUGs. There is a use for the power though, its very, very limited, especially in steam-rolling high-level teams. It's a great emergency power.
Like when facing an area where multiple groups of mobs are in close aggro range with each other. All it takes is one person stepping off to one side just a little too far, and all of a sudden the team is in danger of a wipe. DS and you only get the bosses as an add, if the team is good, you can clear up the current mob and prep before DS wears off.
Outside of this particular scenario, the power is viewed as slowing everything down too much. I've seen many suggestions made for a change to DS though.
First, change it so that it can turn intangible foes tangible. It doesn't require making any other change to the power, and provides a unique effect, though with very limited use.
Change it altogether to Anti-Gravity Field: a targetable location pet that casts Lift to targets within its area.
Change it to Gravimetric Disturbance: targetable location pet that alterantely casts Lift or Crush within its area.
This third idea was originally called Gravity Well, prior to the WS power, so now I call it Singularity Point: targetable location pet, that acts like an inverse repulsion, it grabs mobs within its area of effect and pulls them toward the center.
Most recently, from the Dom boards, making it a targetable location phase, where in anyone that enters, be it player or mob, is phased. Mobs can still move through it, so I'd a slow effect. But now players could enter the field, get phased, and attack the mobs within. -
I'll add my vote to something being done with the Shadowshard, that place is great.
Also, the Dark Astoria story lines, in particular what the Tsoo are looking for there.
One thing I'd like to see more of is the Warriors. The story line literally just kind of ends with nothing happening. We never get to see Odysseus, their leader, though the AE description of the warriors links him to the Well of Furies, which has now come about in the latest issues. The time seems ripe to tie him in with the current story line. -
I started gaming with the Basic D&D, then AD&D, 2E, AD&D Core Rules, 3E, and 3.5.
I've had long campaigns that ran in Aliens, Vampire the Masquerade (several different games in this world at that), Werewolf, Cyberpunk 2020 (of which I was the ref), and both the original Marvel and DC Universe.
I've also played multiple sessions in Dracula, Indiana Jones, Ghost Busters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Robotech, Rifts, and probably a few other gaming systems that I've forgotten.
Sadly though, the last gaming group I was with that used D&D 3.5 broke apart and I've been table topless sense then. I just found out that a friend of mine joined a combo 4e / Pathfinder group that had about 10 people just start up several weeks ago, but I don't know if they have the room for one more.
With all the games I've played, I have a fond love of Marvel, it was the first hero system I played and while it took many tweeks with the advanced system rules, we managed to make it pretty robust ( we added a lot of items and quite a few rules). Cyberpunk 2020 is the game that I personally ran the longest, and again with quite a few tweeks and rules added, but it was a blast. I also really enjoyed the AD&D core rules game that I was running for quite a while, the players were really good and we had a great campaign run.
I never got into the 3E D&D games though. It probably had to do with the fact that I made the mistake of making a Bard before I realized how pathetic they had become in that system, on top of that, the campaign dealt heavily with undead, so I was largely useless.
My second character was a dwarven monk, who ended up being overshadowed by every other melee-type character and the local rule-lawyer's completely nasty druid that didn't do much else except take a particular bear form with buffs and when he hit, did more damage than anyone else. -
Okay, I get this, just not sure if I agree that the solution as presented is the most eloquent way of handing it.

Quote:I understand, and apologize. I lost some of the context of this particular conversation throughout the reading of the rest of the thread. So much to keep track of, somethings get muddled or lost. I must be getting oldUh, I was putting a rebuttal to a suggestion that the crafting path had to be time-gated to a slower rate (once every three weeks, specifically) so that the WST would be the standard and so that no one could earn faster than the once-a-week method.
I was simply pointing out that "WST once a week" is not equal to "earning 40 shards in a week".
I care about how fast I, as a soloer, get things. I really don't care how fast people who team get them.
I also apologize if it seems that I'm calling you out. I don't intend for that, really. Originally, I disagreed with some particular or other and its kind of stuck with me. I'll be sure to let that drop as best I can. -
Quote:I literally laughed out loud about using the term for work for a gameExcept, of course, that they've poured several hours (probably 10 or more, even counting TFs, and more like 30-40 solo) into playing that week, while those running the WST have put in a couple hours or less.
Just because they both get one Notice a week doesn't mean one person didn't work a lot harder for theirs..
Really, though, what does it matter how fast or how slow it takes for someone to earn the same reward, particularly if they earn the same reward at the same rate, ie in this case once a week.
It doesn't bother me in the slightest that a more dedicated player has more shards, components, purple recipies, inf, or whatever than I do. It doesn't bother me that they get their rare alpha before me. So long as I eventually get whatever it is I need or want for my characters, and I'm having fun doing so, than it shouldn't matter that they are getting there first.
The game isn't a race. Yes, all things considered, there should be some fairness with the cost of a Notice, but if its possible for either a team player or solo player to get to the same place, in the same relative time than it shouldn't really matter, in this case, that time is one week.
Now after crafting goes live, then dedicated team players will be able to probably craft 1 or more Notices and earn them via trials. In this case, there will be a disparity between this type of player and a soloer, but then really, so is anything else that can be earned in this game. And while the game does cater a lot to a casual player, it shouldn't always be geared toward the lowest common denomiator. It would only serve to create an even further disparity between a dedicated team player and a soloer.
And if someone is so determined to solo in an MMO, than in my own opinion, they shouldn't be overly concerned about how quickly someone else does anything else in the game. But maybe that's just me. -
Quote:I'm not too sure about the idea that its suppossed to be a component sink. First, components are chosen by the player, if you don't need it, don't choose it and choose the other reward. Second, now excess components can be broken down back into shards. Once any excess components are broken down, a smart player would only need to choose a component if its either needed to craft something new, or to be broken down so they can close whatever their shard gap may be.One reason why I think there's no gate on the crafting at the moment is because the Notice recipe is doing double duty as a component sink. I don't think the devs want to limit it: they want it to be expensive and they want people to use it to suck out excess components that are otherwise just sitting around. Doing that creates an incentive for the fastest earners to keep coming back for more.
Another reason why I'm usually very cautious about functional overload in any system design.
If what you say is true that the excessive cost is there to get the fast earners coming back for more, than its more of a hinderence for the low earners. Which is what so many are clamoring about. There should be more of a balance between the two, and something would have to be put in place as a stop-gap measure if the price is reduced, and the only thing I can think of is a cool down between crafted Notices of the Well. -
If that's the case then, Arcana, then I'd have to agree with the idea others have posted that call for a cool down on crafted Notices of the Well to match that of one earned.
Either a crafted Notice should be allowable once a week in tandem with an earned Notice, or it can replace the earned Notice slot so that only one Notice can be earned a week either way.
Even so, that's a lot of hours to earn all the shards to craft from scratch on a level 50 that's not really doing anything that's very new. At least with I20 shards can be earned while exemplared, even if at a leasser rate. If the low end rate is less than 1 per hour, I'd really hate to see what the low end exemplared rate is.
I wonder, does that also means while doing Flashbacks? If so, at least someone can take their 50 and hit up all the content they missed along the way, even solo.
Then again, I seriously question the need for a rare alpha for someone who (doesn't want to team for whatever the reason) and plays at the lowest possible difficulty. I wonder if such players still use SOs, or even common IOs and then wouldn't their build benefit more from working towards some set IO bonuses, which would probably be more possible to obtain, than trying to earn the rare alpha. -
Quote:That was not meant in anyway to be a personal attack. Why do arguments against what I would prefer always end up becoming personal attacks?
Nor is it a veiled attempt to as someone else posted, call you a red headed step child for not choosing to team.
It is a statement of fact, verifiable by the very posts you've made in this thread. It doesn't matter what the reason you choose to solo in a multiple player game (this being posted by someone whose soloed the majority of the time that he's played here) but by refraining from teaming makes things more difficult for you to obtain.
Basically, stating that it isn't fair that teams earn things easier then people who solo, that content is available for teams while not available for people who don't team. So should develeopers of an MMO develop containt that can ONLY be acheived by 1 person, and not be done by a team? Seems a contradiction in terms.
Meanwhile, the simple fact that even though you may not go through the same content, and that while yes, its more difficult, can earn the same rewards is something that other MMOs provide. Its one of the refreshing, great things I like about this game.
I am in no way being elitist when I say that anyone should be able to form a team at sometime and even do a task force at least once a week, even if the tf is all they do that week. I've subbed since June of 04, never cancelled. I've been in a total of two SGs in that time, the first with RL friends, the second with great people I've met in game (to which I'm still a part). Yet, I've mostly soloed, still haven't done most of the Blue side TFs, none of the redside SF. I've managed to IO out two 50's (I have several 50s altogether), and the only reason I've done so is thanks to Hero Merits. Otherwise, my builds would still be largely incomplete.
I may only get to play a half hour this next week. If so, I'll probably not get to do a tf. But like this past week, I was able to play several hours, to which I've done a mothership raid, and 3 TFs (ITF, and 2 Khans). Outside of logging in to run an odd mission or two which took probably no more than 15 minutes a shot, those 4 main activities were at seperate times and totalled just several hours of time, none of which were prime time hours. -
Quote:I'm sorry, but I came to that conclussion after reading some of your mocent recent posts. Going back, looking at your original posts, only serves to show me that you're stance on the matter has only slightly changed. At the time I made those posts, it was impossible to gain the reward without teaming. The craftable option was only announced a few days ago.
While I agree with the basic presmise that the current crafting costs does seem excessive, - heck I mostly solo as well, even though I'm in a very active sg, they're just not as active as when I am - that doesn't mean that I can't use the same time I play to get together with other people that are on at the same time and still get a tf done at least once a week.
I didn't get to do it the first week the WST was out, I simply didn't have the time, but then, I didn't have much time to do much of anything besides an odd mission or two throughout the entire week anyway. This week was different and I've been able to do more. Heck, as I'm typing this I have a 18 month old in my lap (I've lost count on the amount off errors I've had to correct).
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not faulting you for not liking the way the difficulty in gaining a UR recipe takes. However, that does not mean that you can't still obtain it by teaming for a short while once every so often. The only person that's making things more difficult for yourself, is you. -
Quote:I apologize for misinterpreting your many posts to which you were were oppossed to the idea of joining a task force in order to gain a reward faster than it took you to earn it by soloing. And the way you create a preferred method is by encouraging it. By making teaming more efficient than soloing, it is encouraged.
Are you operating under the grossly false assumption that I think "encouraged teaming" is a bad thing?
If by such posts were trying to say that its a good thing to accomplish things faster on a team than solo, then I definitely misunderstood your stance on the subject. -
Quote:I'd agree with this premise, though I'm not against it if certain things are available for only teams, and other things were available for only solo players, not that every game can achieve this.If the only way to get something is through a team, it's forced.
Quote:If teams get those things quicker and easier, it's encouraged.
Particularly in a MULTIPLAYER game, teaming should be the prefered method of achieiving results. Just having the ability to acheive the same rewards solo is a far cry better than many other MMOs out there, most which not only make it a requirement to gain any rewards, but also use rewards themselves as a gate to yet gain even further rewards.
The closest thing to gated by gear in this game is the emplty alpha slot debuff applied to currently just 2 task forces in this game. And yet, it can still be done its just more difficult. -
While the solo options does seem excessive, there really isn't any excuse to not do the WST. Make friends that play during the same time that you do. Set up the WST, complete it over a number of play sessions if necessary, though it shouldn't be necessary.
Not too long ago, I joined a clear all ITF. It was a pug but everyone was experienced with the ITF, or experienced enough to know how to wipe anything they can target off the map. We did the entire thing well under an hour, and that was slow.
I recently did a pug Khan, most of the players were not familiar with it. While there was some speeding, namely stealthing (by only 2 players that could) in 1 mission. Clearing the clickies in 2 other missions. It still took 1 hour 15 minutes to complete. Which is incredibly slow for a Khan, were it a speed run which can be done roughly a half hour without much trouble.
Take into account that I have 2 children, many RL commitments that clogs up my schedule, and I've still managed to get the rare on two characters. If anything I'm thankful for the WST as it has gotten more players to look into doing the tf, making it easier to find a team to do it, given my particilarly difficult play times, I usually have to miss out on such content, but now its been much easier getting to do them. -
I started playing my account in June, but played on my brother's second account in May of 04 and we were in Perez, I never saw any cows at that time. He had been in beta during the big event, and when the game went live. He doesn't remember cows.
I do however remember BaB as a shark on the wall of a building in Portal Corps. That was fun. -
I've always wanted to make a fire/storm controller. The two powersets compliment each other very well. Endurance usage is the downside of the set, building to the strengths of the set require a high recharge build, which makes endurance even more of a problem.
I always figured the Fire or Ice app would be the natural ways to go. Fire adds single target and aoe damage, and has consume. Ice has hibernate, and AoE damage with Ice Storm. I hadn't looked at the combo since GR though, and Leviathan Mastery works quite well too, hibernate and water sprout are excellent powers.
That's it, too the character creator! -
I'm betting that the new costume pack will not only include new animal heads, feet, hands, but also new running animations. Such as quadrapedal movement. From SexyJay's in game comments that were posted on the boards by a player, I'm guessing that the pack will be limited to wolf and bird types.

Any Bruce Lee film, though Game of Death is a hard watch since it was completed after his death and includes some really bad footage of his stunt double taking the lead role. Its great to watch the parts of the real Bruce Lee though.
Kiss of the Dragon
The Transporter (the first, personally couldn't stand 2 and 3 is ok)
Blade
Bourne trilogy
Kung Fu Hustle
Lethal Weapon 1-4 (though 3 is ok and 4 is alright except it has Jet Li)
Hero (Jet Li)
Fearless (Jet Li)
Yip Man
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Excaliber
Expendables
Highlander
Predator 1 and 2 (haven't seen Predators yet but avoid Predator vs. movies horrible just horrible)
Rambo First Blood
Sin City
300
I'm sure there's more I could recommend, but those are movies I have and enjoy. -
I watched the show last night as well. I echo the previous statements wherein the show does have promise. But the writing definitely needs to improve. I too predict early cancellation.
I don't mind some of the plot holes that have already been mentioned. Some of them are ripped from comic books to almost call them cliches.
The pacing really bothered me though. The first episode or hour if you will, felt incredibly rushed, and in the alloted time, some characters were not well established. I'd also include his training time, the establishment of his lair, and his ability to get his hands on so many exotic poisions in the second episode or hour.
Along with that, the leader of the carnival finds the lair awfully easily, so I'm a bit lost on just where it is located. Is it under / near the carnival?
The one really big thing that bothered me was that our hero, who just happens to be a cop, allows the Carnival of Crime to rob banks - not just money from Chess, but from multiple bank vaults. Now I understand the concept of the ends justify the means, but I just didn't see the transitional struggle of the main character in shedding his civic duties as a police officer, to siding with criminals.
Personally, I wouldn't have revealed the carnival group as a crime gang at all. Lettting them appear to be well trained carnies that behind the scenes end up using the hero to distract chess in order to commit crimes, and therefore creating a tension for the viewers where the hero's mentor is really a crime boss, would have added more depth to the show.
Also establishing why the carnie leader has a beef with Chess might help too, though it'd be enough to know that there is a beef and not just wanting his money.
The last critique I have is that I felt it was way too soon for Chess's idendentity to be revealed. He could have simply had another chess mask put on him and left it at that. Keeping the head of the corporation and chess as seperate-but-one-in-the-same, would have also added some depth.
The corp should have been protrayed as the salvation of the city, to draw more contrast from the villianous Chess. This would have been done better by showing more of the normal police inability to combat him and thus, their resources dwindling in their futile fight.
After all, if Chess was the cop who died, then why does the suit keep going back to that identity? If he's the master planner that we are presented with, the smart thing do to would be to shed all pieces of his Chess identity and create a new one. If they were going to keep it, then the entire framing / Chess decoy ploy is moot. -
I don't think that climbing is impossible, just probably very difficult. I recall the screen shots of the BaB shark veritcal on a wall.
It doesn't have to be wall crawling either, I'd settle for wall walking. Oh to super speed up the side of a building. Yes I'd take two travel powers just to do it. -
One of the reason's I like Brutes is the pairing of Fury with damage aura powers, like Blazing Aura. If I were to use a damage aura power on a scrapper, I'd feel the need to make sure it was slotted for accuracy, endurance, and damage. On a Brute, I'd settle for Accuracy and Endurance, leaving Fury to boost the power's damage instead. It helps to save a few slots too, particularly if you decide to frankenslot.
Mind you, this choice is pure personal preference, but I find that it works out quite well for me when I make my builds. My DM/FA brute tends to work out quite nice, especially since i19 where stamina became an inherent, allowing me to add a few powers into what was already a tight build for me. -
A long time ago, I had suggested something along the lines of how the Resistance mobs utilize the leadership pool.
What I had suggested was that the higher teir mobs, from Lts on up were given access to the leadership pool. Each rank would get an additional power with increasing strength.
A Lt, would for example, have a low level assault damage buff. A boss would have a stronger damage buff and a maneuvers defense buff. An Elite boss would have assault, maneuvers, and tactics, and AV would have all three powers at the highest level.
With large mobs, containing multiple lts and boss, would provide a significant increase in difficulty, also adding the additional tactic of removing threat mobs first more of a priority. -
I can't believe that I had completely forgotten about Moon Knight. I had always remembered the werewolf story that was used to explain his origin. He's gone through several changes over the years and its hard for me to recall which were just story adaptions, retcons, or evolutions.
There is certainly some potential for his costume theme to mesh with Specters. That gives me something to think about, I'll probably be in the the costume creator tinkering with things forever now.
