  1. Sounds like good fun, like some others up thread, I may just make an ill troll on Defiant in hopes of making the next event.

As a VIP player, you will have 400 points a month, or even more when you have reached the top tier of the Paragon Rewards Program. These points give you the freedom to customize what an Issue means to you by letting you choose from the great items found in the Paragon Market. The Market isn’t changing our commitment to Issue releases, it’s expanding on it.
Wait. So when a new issue releases, we have to buy it, piecemeal, at the Paragon Market using either our "free" 400 pts or actual cash? That can't be right. There's clearly something wrong with my reading comprehension, right?

Totally forgot about AB getting neglected by the healbots too, especially controllers burning through end like crazy or giving it to a blaster before they nuke and crash.
Good point, I cm lowbie melee types until they get mez protection, too. And yeah, if they're not using cm, chances are super high that they're using fort AND AB on the tank, if they're using it at all. *sigh*
  4. Head scratching weirdness indeed. Sounds like you did the right thing in excusing yourself from the team. I'm not keen on micromanagers on pugs anyway (unless it's a keyes or something), but for any "leader" to tell a troll to run into a mob while a tank and multiple scrappers stand around scratching their bums . . . ? Just to hold a super freak? Nuts.

I actually don't mind the super stunners that much, especially on anything ice. As has been mentioned, they don't drain all your end in an initial hit like Sappers do and don't pose a real threat if the team, or at least a couple people on the team, are targeting them initially for holds (and quick death).

On my lvl 50 emp/arch defender, I always used my attacks in addition to healing and buffing...but in the later stages of the game, I'd often be on teams that didn't need much healing or buffing and I could just fire away attacks for the most part.

The funny thing about the "healbots" or whatever you want to call them, they rarely ever use CM or Fort. If you're not going to take any attacks, then you better be using ALL of your primaries. I can't tell you how many times I ended up with a 2nd emp on the team and I'd keep getting mezzed. I'm keeping 7 people, including the other emp, on CM at all times (while still using all of my attacks) and they can't even keep just me on CM. You'd think after three times of "zzz" or "CM please" that they'd figure it out but usually it would require a tell practically begging them to please keep CM on me and I'll handle CM for the rest of the team, lol. Same with Fort. I'm keeping Fort on 3 people at all times and they don't even use it. Or better yet, we enter the mission, they put CM and Fort on the Tank (the person who needs either of them least) one time and that's their only use of CM or Fort for the rest of the mission, haha.

At the lower levels, if you properly use CM and Fort, your teammates will love you. Plus, you'll need to spend less time healing because those squishies will take less damage since they are getting mezzed less and have boosts to their defense.
Ok, this not using cm, fort, AB thing gets me, too. Like you I cm the whole team (squishies, anyway), and when another emp is on the team and I have to beg for cm . . . grrr. I even had one tell me she didn't know what I was "whining" about because she wasn't getting slept or held. Um, right, that's because I kept her cm stacked (and I told her as much and asked if she'd prefer that I just cm her when she buffed me . . . amazing how quickly she decided that cm wasn't so bad after all).

Blaster. When I hear the word, I think about shooting things at range. And only range. It's just my opinion, but blasters should not have melee attacks. Kind of like how wizards and sorcerers in D&D would stay away from melee combat, but were unrivaled when it came to range (archers with the right feats and the right weapon could compete) and AOE. But I tread on thin ice, and I don't want to compare with D&D. I know blaster players who say they hit and run when they melee, but that sounds more like a stalker.

I suppose what I want to say is: If you could make a blaster a PURE ranged blaster only, like having Fire Blast for your primary, and Ice Blast for your secondary, then I would give up on scrapper and brutes for the next year.

I'm not a dev however, and they chose to design blasters the way they did for a reason. If what I listed were an optional way to create a blaster though? I would pay any price to have that option.
Blasters do need the occasional melee attack simply because they do get baddies in melee range when immob, for instance, so they can't get away. Smacking an ice or fire sword at these is useful while hitting range targets with range attacks; it also looks really cool . Many of the secondary blaster sets, though, are about mitigation more than melee, with the obvious exception of /nrg (shiver and ice patch are awesome; consume is great, etc. People, not me, swear by some of the auras--though I do love hot feet on /fire, I admit). That said, though, I rather love the idea of a pure blaster blaster with actual blast sets as both primary and secondary. It makes me a bit giddy just thinking about it.

Boring? I thought this was about relaxing. It's all subjective, of course, but boring . . . run a tank (nothing more boring to run solo, imo).

  9. Three things I do as soon as I can for end issues (after three slotting stamina for end mod, of course):

Slot perf shifter +recovery (in stamina)
    Slot miracle +recovery (in health)
    Slot numina +regen/recovery (in health)

You will still need end red in some powers (the ones that suck end), but these make a world of difference, and aren't that hard to get these days.

What's relaxing? Say you're going to solo. What do you play if you want a mellow, relaxing, evening of punching dudes in the face, shooting them, or whatever, without spending a lot of time watching your insp tray or mashing buttons?
Relaxing solo? Definitely, hands down, 200% masterminds. Summon the demons, thugs, bots, whatever, slap them in bodyguard mode, buff (or whatever), and off you go.

Note: your secondary will vary relax ratio, but for soloing, there's nothing better (to my mind) than mm's. And I say that with my main as an ice/ice blaster. Nothing relaxing about her, though, she's hands on and tactical thinking all the way (also quite fun, of course).

  13. Pretty much anything melee. I don't like having to run, lumber, lurch after things, and I don't "get" the challenge of beating stuff senseless when you're well nigh unkillable. I do love that other people love tanks, brutes, scrappers, aggro magnet dudes and dudettes because it lets me do my thing from afar.

There aren't too many squishy ATs that I don't like, but one is Peacebringers. Ugh, just cannot get into them and don't think I've ever got one to 20.

Power sets? I haven't played them all (and some I'll never play, see above re: melee), but there aren't any that I dislike, though now that I think about it, I've never really gotten into traps.

    Plant Superteam

This looks great, May (I want to call you Vineyard from running with you on Saturdays, heh).

I love having a build to . . . well, build toward. I decided after running a couple of trials on my plant/emp (on liberty, not a Garden Stater) that I wanted two builds for her, one for trials and one for "normal" play. She just didn't need the same things in trials that she needs in PVE (like recovery aura is redundant and silly in trials because everyone has their end attended to by then, etc.), so I have a whole second build to work on for her. Such fun!
  15. Tahliah

    Plant Superteam

This isn't an economy build, so my suggestions aren't cheap (heh), but I wonder if you need consume at all? It's not until lvl 47, and you can get either cardiac or musculature for end in Alpha at lvl 50. Just a thought, but that would free up some slots and give you a power pick for spirit tree.

In health, you can add the Numina and Miracle procs for + recovery; Numina includes a +regen bonus, too. If you want to keep the 5 DWs for the recharge bonus, then consider slotting health with 6, so you can put a Miracle in for the +15% recovery (this should be fine to get you to 50 and your Alpha), but that's a lot of slots in health (I usually only have 3, the 3 procs).

I agree with Nec on finishing off Coercive, too, the bonus is too good to pass up. You could take a slot from Assault and one from Hasten to bolster lingering and seeds of confusion. Assault doesn't use much end, so one end red should be sufficient.

I see that you are going for recharge, so think about putting Apocalypse in fire blast instead of Decimation? I run 5 posi and the chance for kd Ragnorak proc in my creepers, and I love it. This would also give you another posi set with the recharge bonus.

These are just ideas, though, and dependent on what you want your toon to do.

    It goes like this:
    "Valued Customer" aka VIP Account
    "Current Customer" aka Premium Account
    "Potential Customer" aka Free Account

VIP accounts are objectively superior to Premium accounts. Premium accounts are objectively superior to Free accounts. The game itself treats them this way and that isn't going to change.

    * - For example: If I recall correctly, Free can't use /bug or /petition (and likely can't use /stuck either). Now, admittedly, most people don't use those very often, but when you need them ...
I understand what you're saying and agree that this is the setup by the game itself. It just seems from reading the many forum threads since Freedom was announced that some people actually believe they are "better" than someone who doesn't fork over $15 a month for a game. That strikes me as beyond absurd and slightly delusional.

As for your question, I don't have an answer. I'm likely to continue to ignore blind invites as I do now. Unfortunately F2Pers who *would* have sent a tell but can't may end up as casualties of the system.
Ha! It seems we were talking at cross purposes; I don't currently accept blind invites either (for the most part) and even have this in my search request line.

I will, however, adjust this when Freedom launches for the reasons we've been discussing. Or at least adjust my attitude about it; I mostly team with the same people when I'm not soloing, so it's only rarely that I join pugs (not that I have anything against them, I just run with the same crowds, typically).

Without the ability to pass inspirations you break fluidity of the game, missions, and pretty much all content.

I don't want to sit in a sewer for half an hour waiting for people to return, and I don't think they want to either.

Cut trades for anything else and we can manage.

On another note...I guess I could totally merc my Empath and my red side Pain Corr out for missions to allow for smooth completion of a normal mission.
Yes, the lack of inspiration-passing will affect everyone, but hey! maybe it will change the "accepted" (largely dismissive) view of emps in the game! Woohoo! I'll happily run my emps to help teams run missions more effectively and quickly.

. . . or have the range of vet and bought costume pieces that add to one's ability to create awesome costumes. Vet status cc's are very much better in these terms. And may actually be a good way "around" the inability to give ingame rewards to free players. It would be unfun to enter a cc knowing the first prize is $50m, second $25m, and third $10m (or whatever), to come in first and then have someone who came in third get more of a "prize" than you do. But if the cc is only open to freeps . . . well, that makes it seem more fair (though it does bring up that ugly specter of freeps being "other").

It is if you don't have access to tells. In fact, it's not just hard, it's impossible. They may want to, but they simply won't have access. The question here is how can we maintain a culture that says blind invites are "rude" when there is not /t option for free players?

It seems that some of the limits on free and even premium players are going to affect subscribers in many ways that I fear will actually deepen the divide between VIPs and free/premium players, creating an even more distinct "class" hierarchy in the game.

Good point about changing the culture of the game. Blind invites will become the norm, and we'll simply have to adjust. I do understand limiting free players' ability to spam chat channels and the goal of hurting RMTs "business," but I don't understand why they can't trade with VIPs, premiums, and / or each other. It would also be good if free players could respond to tells sent to them, if not begin such a conversation.

As to costume contests getting griefed, that's just a given. We can put griefers on ignore or remove local and help channels from our main chat window (I think these are the only two channels free players can use). People have suggested making a chat channel for free players, and I think this is a good idea but suspect that "help" will become that if one isn't set up. It would be nice if they could at least join the mentor's project chat channel as that is devoted to helping new and returning players anyway.

As an aside, I'm really quite horrified by this "freeloaders" attitude. I sincerely hope that everyone who thinks/feels this way removes themselves to the VIP server on day one of launch. They'll be happier there, and I think that it will make a more welcoming atmosphere for new and returning players.

  25. Really good idea for a thread. There are a few things that I remember most and appreciated immensely at the time.

One of my first memories of those early days (only three years ago, so nothing to many of) was some random hero in AP offering to trade with me, as someone mentioned above, I had no idea what that was and just sort of went with it. I was amazed to see that this person, a total stranger, had just given me $1m influence. I was stunned, and said "thank you so much" in broadcast (I didn't know how to use tells yet). That stayed with me, and I pay it forward every chance I get.

In my first week or two playing, I entered a costume contest in AP (don't see many of those anymore), and I didn't win, not by a long shot. My costume wasn't anything special (to this day, while I love to make new costumes, they're rarely noteworthy, let alone cc winners), so I wasn't too surprised as I looked around and saw totally amazing costumes, and heroes striking poses, dropping auras, pets, etc. It was magical to me. Who knew there were so many options? So much to get, do, be? I loved it, just standing there soaking in all the goodness. Anyway, I suddenly got a tell from someone (one of the judges) who told me that she liked my costume and was giving me a runner-up prize. I forget how much influence it was now, several million probably, but I was most grateful. To this day, I suspect that she did that to all of us without even a three month vet badge who entered but didn't win.

Another person who influenced me (not with actual influence this time) was the owner of one of the first sgs that I joined. He took me around, gave me Halloween costume pieces and took me to Croatoa to turn them in, showed me where the tailor was, and told me so much about the basics of the game. He'd take me on missions with him, telling me how to get to them in PI even on a lowbie (this was when you had to be close to the person sk'ing you), and generally made me feel happy about the game. He never talked down to me or made me feel like an idiot (no matter how stupid my questions must have seemed to him); he just was patient and kind and funny. We're actually still friends to this day.

One thing that I love about COX is the playerbase. The game is awesome, engrossing, well-written, endless hours (days, weeks) of fun, but it's the people who really make this game special.
