Some sort of mass welfare like this (in my opinion) would solve a lot of the things that people complain about on this forum! -

By some of the more ridiculous people's definitions you cannot play at level 50 and not farm. I ignore that meaning. I get mine by playing my 50s: street sweeping, radios, safeguards, Ouros arcs 45-50 level. I'd do the high end TFs if I could get the time consistently. None of which I'd call farming.
Of course someone who refuses to use the markets is never going to get their purples unless they are obscenely lucky. I believe people say it takes 1500-2000 kills to get a purple to drop on average. There are 60 different purple recipes. I will leave the math formula to people more versed in it. I just know enough to know it's not going to happen even when farming to get the ones you want.
tl;dr version: farming won't do it. -
The only thing I can imagine that would cause the prices of purples to fall significantly would be to up their drop rate a lot.

When the gold spammers got rolling I put all my characters on hide and they remain there.
I take them off when lft and promptly go back on hide. I see no benefit to being unhidden (the bottom radio button only) and the following downsides:
1. gold spammer gets name, hello spam for eternity
2. getting asked to join my team when I am not in a position to bring them onto one (Ouros arc, Hami raid, team member not leader, etc.)
3. getting asked to quit my current team to join their team (I thought the first time was a fluke but it happened more times after that)
4. getting distracted by the message texts flowing in instead of whacking foes
5. forgetting to hide when sneaking around PvP zones for badges and temp powers -

I would guess the hider percentage is close to 25-30% of the stable population of each server. One method is to do a zone search during a raid or event when the zone is full.
Hami raids are the easiest. Justice usually has 33-40 people in the zone before it gets locked out. AFAIR, the maximum population in the hive is 50, so the math is relatively easy. RWZ would be more difficult since you'd need to do cross faction counting but the idea is the same.
Zone counting has fewer problems than forum polling but YMMV.
PS. I never hide unless I don't want to be found. >.>
Personally I see no reason to be unhidden unless I am lft. -

Allow me to add the following:
Last Thursday and Friday thanks to gleemail I spent 1.5B purpling one of my level 50 controllers.
I cannot wait until next month when my 4B in infamy could have also been brought to bear in the market. As I always ask, what else am I supposed to do with my inf?
Now as to this new player sticker shock. How is it the new player decided to see what a PvP IO or purple or LotG cost in the first place as opposed to say some cheap piece of salvage? How did we go from the horror of 50k Luck Charms being so horrible to talking about the best of the best IOs in the past few years?
I find it all one big joke. Now if you will all excuse me I have to go back to playing the characters I enjoy and accumulating yet more inf which I will eventually use to buy all that I want when I want it (that is at "outrageous" prices). -

I really haven't found any of my stalkers to be challenging to play after they get to level 12 but with the premise of "over challenging for some people" we would need to change every AT with the possible exceptions of brute and scrapper.

On the other hand, villains only get 7 zones to earn the 5 merit explore accolade to the heroes' 13.

I still have a 46 Widow, a 25 Defender and a not yet rolled up Praetorian Corruptor to get to 50 before I join the club. -
What powers did you take?
I just rolled an elec/elec scrapper at lunch with an account at 33 months (nem staff and sands of mu). Set the diff to x2/+0 to similate 2 people. Street swept to 5, grabbed my radio, did my 3 radio missions and got the safeguard.
Entered safeguard. Defeated 2 hellion minons and lt. in path. Turned corned and defeated 2 hellions in path. Entered bank. Used staff to pull vahz lt to me. Finished him. Popped a red, yellow and purple. Hit the 3 minions. Finished them. Ran to whichever villain and lt. were busting the vault. Beat them. Got pack. Without any assistance which your teammate would have provided.
So I got to wondering if you were building him like a brute or doing something odd.
For example did you take Jacob's ladder, Havoc Punch and Build Up at level 6? -
