Also anyone happen to know the command to boot in low graphics mode? just in case anything i do blacks out my screen again id like to be able to get onto it ^^
-
Ignore about the xorg.conf, i have it now it just installed with the software update
-
I have a NVidia geforce4 420Go, its in the old legacy line I think.
Yes it sucks I know but not as much as no card at all
185.18.36 is the version the software updater shows. The hardware driver just says version 96.
I installed the one from software updater, and restarted but theres no difference. Since I forcibly uninstalled the old driver from terminal when I was getting black screen I get an error box when I start the comp now. The comp is still looking for the old NVidia drivers, anyway to stop that as well?
Also one thing i did find weird, I cant find any Xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11/ directory, however I read mint 8 doesnt use one by default. Could this affect the drivers? -
Dont worry about it, once its fixed it will be good
The hardware drivers thing also gets the same result, black screen. I did this the first time I installed mint and wasnt sure how to remove it so i ended up reinstalling the entire system lol.
I just found something on packages called 'NVidia-185-Kernel-Source' with a few versions, going to try that. -
Ok after doing that I had a bit of a massive problem lol.
I couldnt see my screen in init 5 anymore, the screen went black as though it was turned off, which Im guessing points to the driver being the wrong one for nvidia card.
I finally found out the command to uninstall the nvidia driver from my other computer and that worked, but now im back to square one.
The install file for the driver I downloaded myself still comes up with the same error despite the kernel upgrades.
Any other suggestions? -

I installed Linux Mint 8 Helena.
I tried the 'telinit 3' command first but i still got the message regarding server x. So i found a forum post telling me to type 'sudo /etc/gdm stop' which worked and then i got the kernel issue mentioned above.
Il try the kernel headers thingy you screenshotted though thanks the only issue I can see if thats all i need is which ones do i install? I dont have an 'all' one like you i just have a buttload of generic numbers lol -
Thanks guys, just one more question....
Im trying to install the nvidia drivers for my 3d card now which i downloaded off the nvidia site.
After struggling for several hours I finally managed to figure out how to get into boot mode 3 and run the file however i get the error message:

Also posted on NVidia forums to see if anyone can help there either. Please also keep in mind ive only been using linux for a total of one day, so my knowledge is very very limited -
lol zombieman i think just about every post mentioning i17 bugs you pasted that now

Quote:I would very much like it if the Devs would SHUT THE DEMONS UP. Already getting very sick of hearing all the noises that they make all the time, especially in crowded places like the Market.
Its kind of ironic actually... after all the complaints of CoX becoming a farming game, they finally gave in and made a cow based summoning set, with pig squeels every couple of seconds....
All they need now is a pitchfork set for melee charecters and in game music changed to this:

Mobile broadband is a waste of time anyway, particularly the huewei modems (probably spelled wrong
)
I can use a cabled connection until i get stuff sorted but so far the windows drivers seem to be out to annoy me even with wine -
Demon summoning is overpowered as it stands, and just about everyone but the devs seems to know it.
Due to this more people than usual are running to play demon summoning hoping that the devs dont catch on. That combined with the fact its a new shiny means theres gonna be a fair amount of cattle ranchers for a while to come yet.
Try running a cave with 8x demon summoners... its no fun trust me -
Well all i can do is try it i guess, im currently making a cd for linux mint 8 right now. If all else fails I still have my windows xp disk anyway.
-
Does mint come with the compiz fusion thingy though?
Thats the main reason Im after linuxThanks for the linky, i heard about the ndiswrapper thingy but wasnt 100% sure where to input it lol the link helps though. I have the drivers already installed in XP and I have the original .exe drivers file downloaded as well, netgear site says it should work in linux but you know how manufacturers like to lie
-
I was thinking if WINE didnt support CoH I would also run a dual support version of ubuntu and xp for the time being until I can figure something out, however I heard somewhere that running dual support slows your computer down, is this true?
I already installed the demo version from CD and I quite like it but as i said above im new to all of this so I dont really have much idea what Im doing besides dumb luck
Im already having issues trying to get drivers for my netgear wg511v2 adapter, but im hoping WINE will install the windows version. -
Hey guys,
Im considering an upgrade from windows XP to the latest desktop version of linux ubuntu.
Are there any problems running CoH in ubuntu? Im not the most tech savvy person out there so will .exe files still run the same?
Also speed wise is there likely to be any effects? (like vistas slowdown for instance) -
Quote:In Nvidea control panels 3d settings you can set a lot of things there, such as anti aliasing, antistropic filtering, quality settings etc if you set all these settings on the highest possible value for your card, then press ok and run the game, whatever your settings are currently in game it seems to show better graphics.I'm not quite following that. Are you saying that you are adding NVIDIA's effects on top of the effects CoH is already doing??
P.S. Intel graphics chips have been screwed since Issue 0. It's impressive that the game works on them at all.
Its not very clear from my picture, but the settings are noticeable. Its also fixed a few problems with people getting crappy graphics since i17 even with ultra mode on, such as losing lighting effects etc. Not quite sure why, I just assumed NVidea's settings overwrote the games settings so it effectively used those instead.
A fair amount of people in my SG now are reporting its greatly improved graphics in game. -
Hmm wonder how a dark/shield brute would fare with team buffs from Grant Cover.
Also I can see a demon/poison mm doppleganger been nasty. -
Quote:Except thanks to AE half the CoH population no longer knows what Frostfire isSounds like what happens when someone is on the Frostfire map for the first time.
Seriously I went on a walkabout with a new charecter the other day in a few new teams, asking if anyone wanted to do frostfire in hollows, I got 3 tells asking what the hollows was and almost too many to count asking who frostfire was and if it was an AE arc :/ -
The 'Rare' Crash issues still havent been fixed properly either. Still crash making a new charecter when i get to name entry screen, still crash when editing a costume and get to costume selection, still crash talking to MA contacts, still crash selecting a costume option from menu.
This is on a pc and a laptop so its not really a 'rare' occurance, I also know 4 people on live suffering from the same thing and those are just 4 people from my SG. Im sure theres a lot more than that who simply dont use the forums.
Reported at least 30 times now, been told the issue is with the engineers but obviously its not being looked at yet since its still happening on test. Funnily enough, on the original test version before i17 release I never actually got these crashes :/
If the crashes arent fixed in the live patch im going to customer support to demand a refund of my paid playtime, I flat out refuse to pay for a game I can no longer play due to bugs. -
A few people from my SG are reporting there graphics have improved as well using this. Not sure if its anything new but I couldnt find it listed anywhere so thought it was worth a mention.
Im guessing Intel chipsets are still screwed though. -
I no longer want i17 ultra mode... I want i17 Acid mode please
Comes with a complimentry music change to some Jimmy Hendrix tunes -
If thats true its because the drivers your trying to install arent compatible. I had the same issue when I tried to use a new driver as a substitute because they stopped making new ones for my 3d card years ago
-
Hey guys,
After playing around a bit trying to see if I could sort out some issues with i17 crashes I accidently discovered a fix for people using NVidea cards, although Im sure it most likely works with ATI cards too.
If you use the Nvidea control panel to force high settings then run the game, you will find that even if the in game settings are set to the same, you will most likely still get better looking graphics.
Im not sure if the ATI Catalyst bug stops people doing this on ATI cards but it definately works with NVidea.
I'm not sure why if the in game settings are the same but heres a before and after with mine:
Left - Before
Right - After
After seeing the final pictures it doesnt seem too convincing I know, but the difference is larger in game. I'm just too lazy to log in game, take a pic then log out again just to change settings then go in again
It doesnt just apply to charecters, it applies to world objects too from what I can see. -
