jeeeesus i leave my thread for a few seconds and hundreds of hate replys come rolling in, what is it with you people, and yes it was for comedy value but since none of you thought to ask and just rip me to shreds you didnt know that, if anyone is rude around here its you guys, as you can see im rather new to this forum and this is the first forum ive ever been on, so as u can imagine im not up to scratch with this un written code of conduct in threds, im sure in the past when you first started up we all posted stupid threds and regret them later for it but it doesnt help when ones who have been on this forum for a much longer time make personal attacks on my maturity and playing time if you have a problem with my posts send me a private message giving me a few pointers and why my thred might be a little offending to people, i mean how else are you supose to learn! granted ive posted a few stupid and perhaps rude posts but im still getting to grips with the community and whats sociably acseptable and what is not, so please i ask you be a bit more tollerent towards first time posters?

and yes there maybe some spelling mistakes but thats only coz im at work and have to type fast to not get caught by the boss

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well said; the forums do seem to be suffering from an excess of bile at the moment.

    Nice going guys.

The figure I used was the total count of unique accounts logged in over the course of the month. If you saw how I arrived at my average number of players logged in on a day I took the 124000 figure and divided that by the number of days in september to give an average number logged in, NOT the freak highest number that occcurs just

    [/ QUOTE ]

Okay, I'm not a great one for numbers - I read your post a couple of times and it made my head spin - but if you divide the total unique users by the number of days in a month and number of servers, isn't that assuming each unique account only logged on once each month?

No, he's talking specifically to Nightmarer.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yup, he quoted him an' everything.

@Nightmarer: I'm sorry to say I almost posted the link you did before you, but thought better of it and changed my mind, fearing exactly the 'shoot the messenger' reaction you got. These forums ain't what they used to be.

Anyway, I agree with RealDark. Don't go around mixing the DOOM threads. You dilute the DOOM. Don't dilute the DOOM, people!

Also, in most cases, server merges are an indicator of a dying game; a stigmata NC would certainly wish to avoid giving the incoming competition.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Stigmata?

    anyway...

I don't understand why server merges are automatically seen as an indicator of dying game - I think this is received wisdom; sure there are examples where games have merged servers and gone under a short time later, but you could easily argue that the game was going under anyway and the merge was irrelevent (nothing was going to save Auto Assault for example) or that possibly a game failed because they left it too late to consolidate the population.

Leaving the whole 'CoH population is/isn't big enough' and the difficulty over names (which is arguably a bigger issue in this game than any other MMO) things aside, why are server mergers automatically seen as bad?

I know that in many cases server merges are used as a last ditch attempt to save a failing game, and so are generally seen as a symptom of a dying game, but why is it generally used as a last resort?

WAR is currently 'merging' servers (using free transfers) - this is generally seen as a positive move, the game is not dying; it just had too many servers on start-up and spread the initial population too thinly.

WoW was/is constantly 'merging' servers (again using free transfers) no-one could claim it's because the game is in trouble.

So why is the idea of a server merge/population consolidation generally seen as such a bogey man?

weakened barriers between dimensions? cause i don't see a lot of graves that they're rising from. they come from the ground and yet there's no holes. is all our time travel and portal jumping threatening the multiverse itself?

    [/ QUOTE ]

The whole of Paragon City is an old indian burial ground, obviously.

Including slanted building roofs and mid-air, apparently (I've had them rise from both recently with my WS. Gave me quite a shock when they rose from the roof, I was up there specifically avoiding em).

Why would you expect them not to? It's just a re-skinned Rikti invasion after all...

I've given up getting "Buster" badge solo. I fear how many levels I will need to do Trick or treating (on lower level chars) just to get ghosts.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I solo'd the buster badge last year - I solo'd all of them on half a dozen alts, but I won't be trying again this year, the spawn rates seem very out of whack.

I'd left my brute last year needing werewolves & vampires, so I logged on last night to complete. Five minutes later after my second werewolf, I got the badge for those; 40 minutes later after my fifth vampire I got the badge for those.

In all that time I saw two whole spirits - I lost count of the number of witches and zombies I killed to get to that point, but I'm guessing probably enough to have earned those badges all over again.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
The thing is, whilst controllers primary would make them more effective in teams offensively, as a healer it isnt very good because it doesnt have defenders endurence AT ability.

    [/ QUOTE ]

My main reason for choosing to take Empathy as a defender rather than a controller would be a defender's primary is generally stronger than a controller's secondary, meaning bigger heals.

I took energy blast on mine - back when all the cool kids were taking psi blast - chosen simply for the graphical effects. I found the (occasional) knock back a useful "argh gerroff me" power, but I probably wouldn't have picked it in preference if I'd known what I was doing back then!

    This one has run dry.

Could I request that on the new boards we get a new icon to denote Doom Threads so I can avoid them? Maybe something that looks like GhostRaptor with his head in his hands.

People are so negative these days...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Seconded, a Troll icon in the OP's case might be appropriate too...

I don't think (as someone in another thread suggested) that negative threads should be deleted out-of hand; but really, it's all getting a bit much now; can we have a new Doooom™ forum that these things can be moved to?

You are on good form this week, do you do parties?
  15. Maybe we could have 'Full' teams set with a flag, not by actual number of members and automatically fitered out of any search so you didn't have to hide.
  16. [ QUOTE ]
Hate to say this, but I doubt that's the reason, seeing as exactly the same is currently true of WoW, and LotRO.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Cough.

Really? Don't remember that being in WoW, maybe they added it after I left...did I mention I only team with my wife in LotRO? We tend to talk using real words and sound to discuss what to do next.

That's a serious omission in WAR's quest system if everything else has it though...

    [ QUOTE ]
CoH has the great advantage of being able to see what quests party-members have and be able to set the active mission

    [/ QUOTE ]

That tells you what a team are doing now, not what they plan to do, plus there's a 90% chance that the mission title is going to meaningless to someone looking anyway.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Mostly true (between missions, you are telling the team what's coming by setting the mission), but imho, irrelevent. Being able to see the other members missions and set one means you have some way of leading the team, which doesn't involve talking to people (which many people don't seem to like to do); you don't have to quiz other members on what quests they have.

CoH is the only MMO I've played where teams don't form for one or two missions and dissolve; I put this down to a great extent to leaders being able to see their party member's quests and making sure everyone gets a mission ticked off the list, and the team having some immedidate sense of direction by having a single 'active mission'. That and the game being pretty solo unfriendly of course.

The reason Carni & I are banging on about the WAR LFT system is it does seem to work

    [/ QUOTE ]

Begging pardon, but the reason it works is that it was there from day one. LotROs was definately retro-fitted, I'm guessing that WoW's was also. It's too late for CoX, because the playerbase already thinks of the LFT/M system as a lost cause.

    [/ QUOTE ]
As far as I'm concerned, LoTROs was there from day one, I came late to the party.

I suspect you're right about the existing system being lost on most CoX players though, I suspect the devs would have to rip it out and replace it with something new, shiny & simple - with a really obvious new button somewhere on the screen...even then, lots of people won't use it - see my edited in "foolproof" comment above.

And begging your pardon, the reason the WAR one works is it's simple. I can't stress how stupidly dumbed down they've made it compared to WoW & LoTRO's systems; logging into the game is more difficult than joining a team.
  18. [ QUOTE ]
Fact is, LFM systems don't get used any more than LFT systems do. There's a perfectly adequate LFM system on LotRO, actually a very good one. However, what people actually do is scream on Broadcast for members instead.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You see, I opened that window, goggled at it for a moment, went "urk" and closed it again - it bore a striking resemblence to the WoW one to me; this may in fact be totally unfair, but since I only ever play LotRO when my wife does I've never felt moved to investigate further.

The reason Carni & I are banging on about the WAR LFT system is it does seem to work; people do use it, and it's blindingly simple; sure they generally use it to make short-lived teams in the nature of WoW & LotROs teams; but that's a problem with the basic quest system in those games - CoH has the great advantage of being able to see what quests party-members have and be able to set the active mission - this is a trick the other games missed.

    /edit
"blindingly simple" does not mean foolproof of course; a few times now I've been in a Public Quest in an Open Team of 3 or 4 members with an unteamed player spamming "INVITE PLZ" in local.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
    @Sugar Rush:[ QUOTE ]
unlike the broadcast spam which lots of people used successfully until they killed it in favour of this.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You mean they killed the LFG channel, right? They put it back because people still refused to use the LFT system and they just switched to yelling on Broadcast instead.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Haha, did they?

After my time, but not really surprising!
  20. WAR has another little touch which might work well here, individual party members can 'invite' to a team - it doesn't actually invite though, it brings up a little confirmation dialog for the team leader...that would help with all those redirection tells!
  21. [ QUOTE ]
WoW has one nice facility, which is that you can state that you are attempting to find a team for specific instances/raids/etc, but the way it is actually implemented sucks.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Heh... or to put it another way WoW has (or had, 18 months ago) an incredibly over-complicated system which hardly anybody used - unlike the broadcast spam which lots of people used successfully until they killed it in favour of this.

    @the OP
We've had loads of discussions about better search facilities in this game over the years, simple things like being able to filter a search for team leaders, or team leaders having an icon next to their name in the list window seem to have fallen on deaf ears; so I'm coming to the conclusion that either the devs aren't really interested, or they can't edit the existing thing easily and are having to rebuild it from scratch.

WAR currently has the best team search facility of any of the MMOs I play; click a button and it gives you a list of open teams, with the distance (time to reach them) number of members, and what activity they're engaged in (PvE, PvP, Public Quest), click another button, and you join the team - no invite required.

Oh I agree about melee powers being under-represented, weapon-using powers are way out of balance though, there are far too many, in my opinion. Where's my golden age fisticuffs powerset?.

I don't intend rolling a shield user, for the same reason I don't have a dual-blader or archer.

I do have a broadsword scrapper, but that was taken for game mechanics reasons - spike damage - not concept reasons, it's one of the fastest levelling yet least satisfying alts I've played.

I made a mace tank - but only once I could give him a baseball-bat or sledge-hammer instead of something that wouldn't look out of place in WoW.

I love my shield. And my choppa. In WAR.
