Quote:Did I say everyone was? No. I said it happened far more redside than it ever did blueside - amazing how you cut that part out of the quote, though. Hmm. But even in the part you left in, you'll notice I used the word "Some."Hey, by that logic we should assume everyone who plays exclusively Blueside is exactly like Smileytroll.
Don't lump everyone else in with the bad-mouthed garbage
Are there jerks blueside? Sure. But I get far more just spontaneous heals, buffs, etc. than I do redside.
Are there good people redside? Sure. But I run into more jerks there, and they stand out more because of what I said. -
Quote:What a fine example of humanity you're being here.Do you seriously read the verbal diarrhea coming from your lips Sammy? I do not need to insult your intelligence at all..you do a damn fine job of that.
Though the attitude in your post does remind me of one of the OTHER reasons I rarely play redside, besides all the others listed here (no variety low level, depressing, trashy look, etc.) Unfortunately, it's not one the devs can program away.
Redside seems to give some players the impression they have free rein to be complete jerks to others. I'll be on a lowbie, obviously doing some hunts or something, and have a 50 come by and nuke everything - then follow me around killing stuff until I grab a newspaper mission. Why? "lulz im a vilin." Or I'll ask them (and I *do* ask nicely) to stop, and get a screen full of vulgarity. Or they'll train a bunch of other mobs over to me.
Yeah, they get /ignored and petitioned. But it happens more redside in a month than I've EVER seen blueside. I like my masterminds, corruptors, brutes, doms. Come I21, I'll like them even more because I won't have to put up with that. -
Quote:If you offered, I'd head for the hills, too. Add to that that she doesn't seem to regard you as much more than a bully, from what I've seen from several interactions, and I'm not surprised at all.I'm on Victory server, and have offered to team with you several times - but you keep running away, which isn't going to help you with your shyness problems.
Oh, nearly forgot.
Re: costumes.
The Romans considered the Britons barbarians. If the Briton women had been wearing that "barbarian" outfit, the Romans would be too busy laughing or polishing their swords to invade.
Agree 100% to the "Santa's Little Helper" outfit description. It's cute-ish. It's not barbarian, though. -
Quote:Bit of both. From what I'd seen so far, the Ubuntu software center was supposed to be where you were going for everything. And I'd searched in there for (for instance) XML;;Simple and whatnot and came up blank. And when that mentions "If you have ActivePerl, then you have these other dependancies" - well, given I'd just seen a whack of messages saying "THis not found, that not found" and they weren't coming up in there, yeah, I did it manually. Then manually found what *those* complained about.i'm not sure that's what he's saying, but i could be wrong. it sounds like he manually compiled everything because he didn't realize he could just click a few buttons and get what he needed from the repos.
If there's another manager to run *in addition to* that, (a) it's not immediately obvious and (b) that's something that should be merged into the one software center, frankly (even if it calls it behind the scenes.) Because I found none of it there, and didn't see another manager of any sort.
Quote:manually installing dependencies in linux is no big deal and no different from installing reqs i need in windows. if anything it's better because it's in one place and easy to queue up what i need, whereas with windows i'm generally running all over the web looking for what i need.
Now, I'm not saying that's a 100% fair comparison *in this case.* After all, I'm trying to run a non-Linux application in Linux, so there are going to be extra hoops. I expected that. It's just that those hoops led to others to the point of frustration to me.
Quote:i liked win 7, but now that i switched to Linux full time i hate having to maintain my wife's windows computer. it's so much more hassle than linux.
Maintenance wise - barring the OS going south for whatever reason - I'd say the two are equal.
Quote:honestly, i really just think the issue is that people by and large don't understand how to do things on linux and then get mad at it.
That legacy has been minimized a good bit in the last few years - but it's still there, and still daunting (to the point of frustration and/or just giving up) for me and, moreso, for those less willing to put up with mystic command lines than me.
I *want* to like it. But it has a ways to go - then again, like I said, I'd put it on something to use strictly as a web/email machine, and that's progress. I wouldn't have done THAT before. -
Quote:If I'd had them, I'd assume it wouldn't have complained they weren't there when I tried running things. Instead, it was one thing - oh, then another - then, oh, one more thing - oh, and this...not sure what else to say at this point. =) i hope your future efforts go more smoothly. =) not every game requires you to add in extra dependencies. all i can say is, perhaps next time maybe more thoroughly check the package manager first to see if what you need has already been compiled for you? i know those dependencies are in there, because that's where i got them. and for you that would be the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Ubuntu Software Center or whatever they're calling it now. =) and, when in doubt, ask for help. =)
Quote:the flip side of that is, well, now you have some real experience in building things from source. =) good job! =P =D =)
Quote:so, if you're not a fan of linux, why are you using it?
Right now, I'm at the point where I'd throw Linux on a netbook or a low power PC to use for email, web browsing and the like, but still not use for gaming - since apps like that actually DO tend to go in fairly easily. Or come preinstalled. Or work nicely through the software center. It's not, at this point, my first (or second) choice if I had to run "only" one OS on "only" one PC. -
Newest version of Ubuntu on this system (Narwahl,) without the Unity interface... and which itself seems to have updated.
-
But no, that isn't the case. I had a fairly fresh, basic installation. While the script *itself* didn't require compiling anything, the five other things (which led to several other bits to download) did.
Maybe you had some of these bits and pieces (or are used to having to hunt down packages and whatnot.) I didn't. For me, the difference is:
"How do you begin driving a car when you want to go somewhere?"
For windows? "Get the keys, go to the garage, open the garage door, get in car, put key in ignition, turn, put into drive."
My experience with getting all this stuff together for linux? It's feeling more like "Find something car-like. Dig ore. Smelt ore. Try to fashion resulting metal into key. Make engine block from scratch using a beaver, three rocks and duct tape. Put in engine block - oh, but don't forget to grow trees to tap for rubber to learn to vulcanize and shape into tires, gaskets..."
You mention "make sure you have the required dependancies." Yeah. THAT's where I'm dealing with all this nonsense - and where I'm saying anyone saying they don't get why more people don't use Linux can kiss my butt. I'm somewhat stubborn - but trying to track those down (and their OWN dependancies) is annoying and frustrating to a degree that "Update DirectX (checked and done automatically by most programs) in Windows" is not. I wouldn't be as annoyed if half of them were in the software center, where at least I'd know they were installing correctly and would get whatever else they needed (I don't expect the script to be there, of course.)
In any case, after a few days and many times more screwing around than I've ever had to do with even the most recalcitrant Windows program in its native land, it's (slowly) downloading.
...needless to say, I'm not exactly looking forward to trying to get, say, Left4Dead or anything *else* running anytime soon. -
Y'know, anyone who comes up to me and says "Oh, I don't know why Linux isn't used by more people, it's easy and user friendly" can kiss my butt.
Trying to work my way through this - download this, that, the other. Oh, but for that to work you need to download these. Maybe. And run these command lines that give god knows what as output. Hopefully they worked, oh, by the way, you actually need to download THIS as well. OK, now type in this that the other. Watch text you have no idea what it means scroll by, but which might hose you, so hope it's right. OK, find this, make, configure, make make, make cake, configure install, build house, build barn, download something else that doesn't seem to run...
This "simple" little script (which I'm not done making, installing, make installing, make configure, configure install, download xyzing) is getting me very ready to dump the whole Linux partition and send flowers to Microsoft in apology for ever looking elsewhere.
/vent off
Regardless, after all that screwing around, it seems to (finally) be downloading. >.< -

Random thought.
Pain Domination doesn't do much when you're solo, even as a mastermind (the heal is nice, yes.) A debuff a bit earlier would be kind of nice. If it's possible, how about having Soothe able to be targeted on an enemy and debuff them? A little -regen and maybe -resist.
I don't know if it's possible at all. Like I said, random thought. But it'd be some nice debuffing early on before Anguishing Cry. Plus it fits the name a bit betterand makes it a little more distinct from just being "Villain Empathy" early on.
-
I was looking at my Ninjas/Pain mastermind (and wondering "Why did I do this?" again, but it's fun) and trying to find a way I can improve it. (No, I'm not asking for ideas here.)
One of the things that crossed my mind was making my one attack (Aimed Shot) do something more than tickle the bad guys. So I looked at the procs available. Since all it does is ranged damage (no knockback, no debuff to slot for,) there's basically nothing I can use with it. (A chance for hold, I think I saw.)
I'd like to see just some generic "proc" IOs. Chance for hold, chance for confuse (maybe,) chance for the various damage types. I know they can make them - I looked on the VIP beta server and they have the preorder (1-20?) setless IOs from one of the preorders there that do damage/end/chance for smashing/lethal/psi/knockdown in them. And Interface does it for every damage power once you unlock it, so it's not really an "out there" suggestion, but Interface doesn't help me from 1-50.
I'd just like to see more for the sets that are kind of limited in what they can slot for.
I don't think they'd need to be watered down at all. They're already "chance for" something to happen, and by putting them in you're reducing the set bonuses from other sets, after all. But it would make the powers that don't have a lot going for them IO-wise have a few more options. -
Nice. How hard is it to get these done? (I know we can't talk about prices.) And how do you find these?
-
LOL.
OK. Now that we've had our catfight, I want to show you what's so LOLworthy whenever someone brings up "Forum cartel." I'm going to use your own post above (not the <3.)
Quote:I'm referring to all of the people on this forum who have this habit of thinking their opinions constitute fact or better yet, some sort of in place game mechanic that only exists in their heads. It's not a secret society, it's a large group of people on this forum who drive others off the boards by being elitists whose opinions are the only way without being receptive to change, progression or any idea that isn't their idea.
Second, I can guess some of the people you're thinking of. The regulars on this board. And their own posts make what you say false. I've seen them agree that a change could be good, or just say it has some problems and needs some work (and even *gasp!* offer suggestions!) Even the copy paste stuff that gets some people SO offended I think is a good idea, because it's there on stuff that gets suggested over and over again and gets everyone on the same ground so if there's something NEW or a different twist on it the people talking about it can start from there instead of rearguing all over again. (Wow, that's a long sentence.)
They'll usually offer arguments as to why they think a certain way, and I don't think any of them have ever said "Because I say so" in so many words. Sometimes they go with what the developers have said, or because things have acted a certain way (this was changed, but they did that to it at the same time, so they'd expect to see something like that done,) and yeah, they get to have opinions too. That's not elitist.
Third, they don't even agree with each OTHER all the time. There's a thread not too far away from this one on walk where the regulars REALLY don't agree, and at least one is defending the idea (aside from other people chiming in, and some non regulars seem to attack the idea's poster.) You don't even have to dig for it.
Fourth, I don't think any of the regulars have ever hinted that the devs listen to them more or they have any special say. The only person who does seem to, and she admits it, is Arcanaville.
That's why I LOL at anyone yelling about the "forum cartel." Or any post bringing them up. Other than a useless post number indicator, there isn't one, and naming them as anything else is like saying you can't sleep because of the monster under your bed. Seriously, nobody's out to get anyone. Relax.
/out. -

Just a blank post to me. It doesn't sound like I missed anything though.
-
What's challenging?
- New groups, at first. Task forces and trials are this way too. You might find your uber character being shredded by them until you figure out what they're doing. That ends up kind of fading away though.
- New mechanics. I know people complained about trapdoor but I liked that there was a mechanic to figure out to beat him (and I still solo him.) I wish there were more things like this instead of just "Let's give a bunch of HP and a bunch of defense and resistance." That's just boring.
-
I have to agree leadership doesn't really fit. I don't know what to put in its place though.
-
And here we have a prime example of "How to make sure to make your post into a whiny rant," alternately "How not to be taken seriously." Call out some shadowy "Forum Cartel." What are you going by, the stupid forum titles? LOL. Or are you one of those paranoids sitting at home in a tinfoil hat looking for some sort of conspiracy?
Quote:trying to diminish another good idea that the player base has asked for.
Quote:No one is saying having a lot of prestige makes you a good player, but what it does say is that you were dedicated enough to that one SG to provide them X amount of prestige so they could enhance their base.
Quote:I have never ever met a single person in the entire game who has sat there and said "Well I have x amount of prestige so I'm X amount better than you."
Quote:Comradery actually means something to some people and shows itself in many different ways, prestige is a good example.
Quote:The narrow-mindedness/elitism of the forum cartel on this board is ridiculous.
Quote:You're going to sit here and talk about prestige being an "elitist" thing when all you people do all day long is crap on every other persons ideas?
Quote:Instead of saying "that will never work", "1000 times no", "your idea sucks", why not think of a way to implement such ideas in a way that is best for all.
Quote:Many ideas could work, you people, for some odd reason that Twixt should do a study on, just like turning up your noses and making baseless arguments. -
Not me. Might want to ask in technical issues so the people there can maybe find a reason. They congregate there.
-
Quote:Same here. I don't remember anyone going "Hey, I'm a guy!" or "Hey, I'm a girl!" or asking anyone else if they were, either.Almost 7 years of PuGing, and I can recall maybe 3 or 4 instances of players revealing their gender, and I'm pretty sure they were all 'I'm cooking for my wife tonight, only got half hour folks. or 'hubbies home in 20, can we get this BAF done quick?' type reveals, ie likely to be indicative of one gender but not exclusively so. Can't recall any 'I am female/male!' declarations or any 'Hey, [Player X], are you a man or a woman?'. Usually the questions in PuGs are more on the lines of 'where are you from?'
Eco. -
Yep, that certainly resembles your posts. Glad you realize it as well. Now why don't you try to be better? Or are you going for a forum ignore record?
Because I see you doing nothing but trolling and arguing, versus someone who has been widely helpful on the boards, who has gone out of his way to explain his side of things and has a history of helping out and, yes, standing up - even to the devs - for things that actually need fixing, despite people like you trolling him (most recently in the incarnate graphics thread.)
What have you done lately to actually help your fellow players? Because if this thread is any indication, the answer is probably "Less than nothing." -

I'd disagree with you just on the basis of the way you presented yourself here, because your gripe is likely selfish and poorly thought out - on TOP of being vague.
