  2. I only have one question about this...

Will there be any Devs at KublaCon?

I hope so, I would love to try out my deck against yours!

Hippie crap chai tea? I'm in the Army (i.e. I beat hippies for breakfast) and I drink Chai Tea Latte's. Now be nice about beverage insults or I'll club a bady seal and blame it on you!

I disagree. It's means the exact same thing as the rule books for those various "RPG" games everyone knows. D&D, GURPS, Shadowrun... they are all sets of rules that you can role play an adventure within, but you don't have too.

You as the player can decide for yourself whether you want to be a fighter fighting an orc saying" Taste my steel foul creature of darkness!" while seated around a table with your gaming buddies, or you can be in the same situation and say "I'm gonna fight that orc, what dice should I roll?"

Online RPG's work in the same way. Are you going to run up to a MOB and furiously mashing keys while making your avatar scream "Have at thee!" or are you going to be in group chat talking about the movie you saw last night?

There is not much of a diference. No, these games ARE RPG's, people just choose not to play them as such.

Don't blame the game... blame the players.

    [/ QUOTE ]
All of my characters are RP characters, even my main which is a hero version of me. I have a voice changer for TS when I use it for each character, seperate personalities, and even seperate habits with each character... I'm not psychotic, I'm a drama geek (wait, that does make me psychotic).

I also have different sayings bound to almost every one of my number and function keys (including shift+, ctrl+, alt+, and a couple of others). I often have my tanker jump into a mob and yell out, "You are all under arrest!" Then they start fighting and I taunt and say "You have the right to remain silent..." Then I cue my first attack and say "Anything you say will be drown out in your screams!" Also things like, "This can be done the easy way, or the hard way! Guess which I prefer?"

The problem is, all this stuff is bound in local chat. I've been kicked by several groups for "spamming." Ya, in one case, I was the only person actually putting something on the screen (hunt mission in Perez Park for the Kill Skuls badge).

In effect, I was penalized for RPing and called everything but "mother's loving son." I'm the same way in my PnP RPGs... I will often talk in character, have the same actions as my character, and even chat with the GM or other players as my character. Not all the time, mind you; sometimes it's easier to describe actions or events without having to lisp, or growl, or slur.

My point is, even in an MMORPG, saome people get picked on because the role play... and that's just wrong.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Well, you're right, but the TSR Superhero game was so complicated, not even this level 14 Paladin could understand it!

    [ QUOTE ]
No worries, mate. To each their own. Personally, I found the Palladium system as a step backward in RPG design. We'd worked so hard to get out of the morass of levels and table-lookups, only to have it all brought up again. Sheesh.

I do find interesting the cross-pollination that Cryptic/NCSoft is engaging in with CoH. MMO to comic to CCG to RPG to... whatever's next. As long as they can keep each genre contained; I would not like to have to buy the CCG just to be able to play the MMO, for example.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Well, Palladium was a lot easier for character ccreation and advancement than Champions. Though toward the end we used the West End Games (Star Wars RPG) d6 system to adapt Champions. That was the best Superhero game ever... except we wrote most of the advanced rules on the fly.

    [ QUOTE ]
I can't really say as to CCGs, but Everquest has been a PnP RPG for four years or so now, and Warcraft has had two iterations as a PnP RPG (D&D Warcraft and World of Warcraft) for about three years. So, no, City of Heroes isn't the first.

    [/ QUOTE ]
That's my point, neither of those had CCGs or minatures games associated with them (at least not until they try to keep up with CoH). As for the WoW D&D... well, it's not polite to speak of the dead.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
There is, I think, a place for some interesting discussion on MMOs in the game space. Traditionally, games have been social activities - you get together with a bunch of friends and have fun. Pen & paper games, board games, card games, sports, etc. are all about that.

For a number of years, though, computer games have been primarily a single-player experience.

MMOs seem to move us at least one step back towards "games as social activities." A good friend of mine & game designer believes that board games are coming back into the mainstream, and aren't just for kids (and families) anymore.

It certainly seems like they (MMOs and online console games) are becoming an accepted sphere in which to play games (have "meaningful fun") with friends.

I think it's too early to tell whether MMOs will have real long-term endurance in mainstream culture ... or whether they'll be more fad-like ... but then 5.5 million WoW players can't be wrong, can they?

    cheers,
    Arctic Sun

    [/ QUOTE ]

I believe City of Heroes is a phenomenon unlike any the gaming world has seen before (well, except for Star Wars but we won't get into that). You began with an MMORPG Computer game. Then you moved, ever so slightly, into a HeroClix minuratures game. You are now reaching into the CCG world with City of Heroes. Soon, you will be venturing into the Pen and Paper Paragon City.

Only three game-types have I sever seen do this: Star Wars, BattleTech, and Dungeons & Dragons. But these started in other genres and moved into MMOs. City of Heroes is the first MMO that has broken the barriers and is moving into CCGs and PnPs.

The popularity seems to keep growing, as well. How long before we see City of Heroes as a Saturday morning cartoon (either drawn or CGI) or perhaps even (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE) City of Heroes the Movie!

I am a hard core gamer who grew up with only Marvell (not that good), Champions (a little better but too many numbers to crunch), and Palladium (better than the others) as PnP RPGs. With City of Heroes, I feel I will be getting back into the dice rolling and the ability to do things which make my GM go... "NO! The rules don't cover that!"

Also, with the CCGs... no more Magic: The Dithering, or Pokemon (Demon critters that need to be lined up in front of a Claw/Regen Scrapper)... Now I can play a CCG involving Super Heroes.

Then you have the HeroClix... Well, all I have to say is I make most of the "kids" (I'm 27, so most people who do this are Kids to me) angry when we do HeroClix at the local library. With the Freedom Phanlax, or Arachnos, I can blow their X-Men strike team or DC villains off of the frickin Board!

So please, continue to expand on the game, all aspects of it. Congratulation, good luck, and good hunting!

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

    P.S.: [ QUOTE ]
...but then 5.5 million WoW players can't be wrong, can they?

[/ QUOTE ] Speaking of Pokemon... WoW?!?!?!

Sorry, a little biased... my original SG lost most all of it's members to that game when it came out. Three monthes later, after they reached the highest level and became bored, they all crawled back begging for reinvites. I went from the lowest rank in the SG to the highest, and made the most of it.

It, in my opinion, is similiar to EverCrack... You play it when you get bored, you play it when you want less of a challenge, then you go back to CoH for better game play and a nicer player base.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Since I hit 50, I've had mostly time to do my badge-wh0ring and PvPing, and this build is perfect for both... especially for those dumb stalkers who walk inside by Repulsion field then get Total Focuses all the way back to the hospital. Well, without further ado:

Inspiration: Villianous opposite of my main character, Starfire-One

Brief Explanation or a link to my origin:
Ki’lana Dackhath’s powers appeared in High School when she accidentally drained a fellow cheerleader’s strength and severely injured several spectators while performing at a football game. She was moved into the Special Heroic Education Program where she met and fell in love with Starfire-One. Due to her inability to control her potential, she decided to stay a “civilian” with Starfire rather than register as a hero. During the Rikti war, however, she killed a noob who accidentally injured Star. Feeling a sense of power, she decided to register as a hero with Starfire-One after the war ended. During a mission, she became enraged at a teammates ineptness and lost control, killing the teammate and a hostage they were trying to rescue. She was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison. In the Zig she realized that her powers were meant to elevate her above others. All she had to do was get out and she would prove it. Then, Along Came a Spider and loosed her into the City of Villains!

What origin would they be? You can count out Tech and Sci for obvious reasons. Magic would be blasphemy. Mutation would be out of the question for lack of cell phones and microwaves... that would leave natural.

Feel the power of the Amish!
  15. I get the funniest feeling while watching it... well, Statesman walks across the trap on the ground and is ensnared... perhaps triggered traps will be in the next update. If so, then you will need perception to see them and skills to disarm them!
  16. [ QUOTE ]
500? That would be ridiculous. Getting those 200 was like a running a tf, on invincible, with 8-man spawns, by yourself, with the Vahz wasting disease and the Verizon guy following you around saying "Can you hear me now?", and there was a screaming kid behind you on the tram, and you forgot your keys when you left to fight crime, your kid 'borrowed' the cash from your wallet, and McDonalds won't let you fly through the drive through.

Ok, slight exaggeration, but that was one heck of a pain in the rear. So, uh, when's the next badge coming?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Wow, that sounds like my experience during "Last Minute Christmas Gift Buying At The Mall" on Christmas Eve...

The mall eventually reached it's capacity, exceeded it's capacity, reached critical mass, then imploded... I think a tickle-me elmo doll was all that remained, but it was eventually taken out by the cops... one picked it up, pressed it's tummy, it began arguing and resisting arrest, so they tased it, it began shaking more, so they had to shoot it... must have been on PCP... those dirty Elmo dolls! Someone should call the ACLU! That's abuse of Muppet!

And yes, I've had a little too much holiday cheer... and spiked egg nog!
  17. This would be really awesome to do... IF THE SERVERS EVER COME UP!!!
  18. Well, they're down right now... I'm guessing on a patch when they open back up and the operation is a go...

Btw, if everything happens to be covered in white and the waterways are frozen over, I'm going to run around squirting yellow liquid like a happy puppy!
  19. My fiance, Aysel (Game name), and I have been playing this game since a couple of weeks after Live. We both play on the Jestice Server and have had quite a bit of fun.

We're even talking about getting "married" ingame before the actual event. You know, nothing fancy, just some friends, SG mates and Devs (if they accept the invite) in some secluded corner of the Test Server.
  20. This is excellent news for Super Reflexes! I can see it now...

    HEADLINE
"Statesman Buffs Super Reflexes, Scrappers Call Off Bounty!"

I would suggest, however, not removing the flame-retarding longjohns until you deal with Ice Tankers and the perceived Nerf to Invuln Tankers

    Thanks Positron! Excellent news!

    [/ QUOTE ]

How is that good news? It means that until the prestige system goes in, nobody is earning any and an SG that's been around since Day 1 has to start from scratch just like a brand new SG just made to get a small base.

    [/ QUOTE ]
There's a difference between an SG at day 1 and an SG that started when the game went live: The number of high level characters! If it is a toss up between earning influence and Prestige, who will that affect more? Lower levels who are trying to get over the 35-40 hump or the SG with 7 or 8 level 50s who do Shadow Shard TFs for fun?
  22. Starfire_One

    I5

I actually love what you've done with I5... especially taking the idea of the Haloween event and tying it in with a new zone. I love most of the changes, too. Especially the Tank changes! I actually had to decide if I wanted a Tanker that does good damage or a tanker that could take good damage... I think I've found my happy medium!

    Now for the bad news...

Defiance. I know you have all heard this before, but it needs to be increased slightly. Maybe start it building at 50% health and increasing from there. At the moment, the only way to get anything that resembles "a real increase" out of defiance is to be almost dead. At level 30+, when/if your health is low enough for a Defiance shot you are either mezzed or defeated before the animation ends.

Monsters I. I've seen Sally surface 5 times since I5 went live. She probably surfaced more, but I've been doing hero-work too. All 5 times, Sally was defeated by the same character who made a broadcast that he was "Lord of the Sally" and generally being a griefer over the broadcast rubbing it in everyones faces...

Monsters II. In the Jack/Eochai spawn in the north, I was at 3 of their spawns with my level 35... all 3 times a group of 8 level 50s got the badges... It wouldn't have bee nthat bad, except 5 of the 8 were present the entire time. I think it should be more like a Hamidon fight. Someone runs in and hits Hami once, they get the badge. A defender wails on a monster for the entire fight and ends up with naught because the team of 8 blasters/scrappers did more damage.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what you have in store for us with the "war Wall-less" zone!
  23. Are they recording Prestige now? If so, how can you tell?
  24. Character Name: Shadowsinger
    Server: Justice
    Archetype: Warshade
    Inspiration: The Haloween Event

Brief Explanation or a link to my origin:
Numbra Nix was a powerful Nictus searching to enslave the Kheldians. She formed a plan to create an Etheric Vacuum that would suck all Kheldians out of their hosts and into a make-shift prison for enslavement. As the Vacuum was forming, several other influences allowed a dimensional breech into a Halloween dimension. She watched in awe as the Heroes of Paragon City defeated the monsters coming through the City’s doors. She ended up bonding with Rhonda Wisenhunt, a librarian injured during the incident. She slept, asking herself what went wrong during the night deemed “The Malleus Mundi Incident.” Rhonda however changed dramatically. She went from a shy, prudish person to an outgoing, fun-loving woman. With the discovery of the creatures ravaging Croatoa, Numbra awoke and made Rhonda aware of what had happened. Rhonda willingly bonded with the reformed Nictus. Numbra feels responsible for the arrival of the Fir Bolg and Rhonda has agreed to help. Now, Shadowsinger is the Ranger in the Forest of Dread!
  25. Character Name: Shinobi-nin
    Server: Justice
    Archetype: Scrapper (Katana/Regeneration)
Inspiration: The American Ninja Movies and the Ninja movies... especially Ninja 3: The Domination

Brief Explanation or a link to my origin:
Angela Davidson was on a research trip to Japan when her life was changed forever. On the slope of Mt. Fuji she discovered a cave containing the Masamune, the fabled “Excalibur” of Japanese myth. The moment she unsheathed the sword, she felt it bond to her. She became stronger, faster, and gained almost instinctive knowledge of its use. She traveled for a time, seeking out information of what happened. Her travels led her to Paragon City. The scientists at D.A.T.A. lead her to Positron. After examining her, he told her that he had seen the katana’s technology before, in Valkyrie’s Spear. Both weapons were forged from the same unknown technology. Since the katana chose her to wield it, she knew she had to. Like Excalibur of British myth, the Masamune chose only the purest of heart to fight against evil. Needing a cover story while she learned all she could from the blade, she entered her name into the Paragon City Hero Arena. While fighting in the Colosseum she could fight the evils in Paragon City!
