    Spook?

    [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]
In the US the censored meaning's much more prevalent, and the secret agent one much less so - and, indeed, the TV show had to find another name over there.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It can't be that prevalent: Merriam-Webster has the "secret agent" meaning, but nothing on the offensive one.

    [/ QUOTE ]
We could wait for our resident American visitor to rule on this, but the odds are she'd make an essentially irrelevant comment (e.g. "Watching DVDs can be fun!") and stick an inane smiley on the end.

It is? I've never heard it used in that context. I must try to get out more

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think he meant the US.

But because S and K are beside each other on the keyboard...

    Errrm. Post not edited. Honest.

So we can't mention the TV show spooks then?

Not Edit: Says "US", always said "US" and I haven't fixed what used to say "UK" at all, as is never said that. ( @ Carni)
  5. Happy birthday - have a good one Coin!
  6. There is - you get it off the contact that gives you your VEAT-specific arcs, whoever that happens to be (my memory often fails on a Sunday morning...).

it's your own damn fault for not watching what you do.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Let's see what did we do? Clicked "Confirm Transaction" once (which you can only click once, because it becomes unclickable after that) and then were charged 2 or 3 times instead of once?

In what way can that be classed as the purchaser's fault?

    [/ QUOTE ]
And earlier was said people got the 'please try again' and did so, thus getting twice charged?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Possibly (not having even tried it, so not had chance to get into problems) the button disables itself after one click, preventing a mad click-fest leading to multiple orders, then after a while thinking comes back saying "Failed, please try again".

If that happened to me I'd think the first attempt was a write-off, and in trying again I'd still be trying to place a first order, not a repeat one.

Although if the zone design's such that a lot of people ignore it and farm freerange mobs so they can leave as quickly as possible, it does suggest something's not right.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Without meaning to sound like a cheerleader here, I've never farmed mobs to leave Mercy quickly. I find doing the missions gets me to Port Oakes within an hour or two, depending on characters/team size.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Edited to reflect incorrect "everyone".
  9. [ QUOTE ]
This is just a theory, but.

I'm sure in i14 they've stopped powers and set bonuses from stacking when you zone. For example, every time i zoned in i13 on a toon that has the Numina and Miracle uniques the effect from both IO's always used to stack, it no longer does.

So, i don't think it's a bug, perhaps an intentional fix?

    [/ QUOTE ]
TBH I'd call that a bug; if it's meant to stop things stacking and turns out to kill completely legitimate unstacked bonuses too, that's unintended and detrimental behaviour. A bug.

    [ QUOTE ]
No one just starting out wants to run for 3-5 minutes just to get to a mission and as has already been mentioned,

    [/ QUOTE ]

Treat the journey as a mission. Take your time, look at the scenery, and fight the mobs you encounter along the way. It will be more fun, and you will gain a couple of levels in the process.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Or simply ignore the missions, and start carving your name into Mercy by beating up on the locals?
Much more fun, and much faster levelling, I find.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, that's what I tend to do too.

Although if the zone design's such that everyone ignores it and farms freerange mobs so they can leave as quickly as possible, it does suggest something's not right.

So how much longer will our EU servers be brought down in the middle of our day?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Until the EU and the US find themselves in the same time zone?
  12. In-game, the difficulties of putting a modern high tech building in an ancient Greek zone would be enormous, plus any heroes in the area should have enough to keep them busy without being distracted by holofun. It'd be as impractical as setting one up in a War Zone.

    No, wait...
  13. I'd be inclined to say "yes" for heal/damage badges - holographic or not, the things you face in MA are doing regular damage...take too much of it and you fall over and get debt. Similarly healing's fixing that regular damage, and stopping people getting debt - equally valuable as on a "real" mission.

Mob defeating badges on the other hand...agree that MA victories shouldn't count towards these!
  14. Happy birthday TheM - have a good one!
  15. Not game-breaking, but the various mainly-pre-rendered screens (zone loading, enhancements/power selection, etc...) all seem to be the 4:3 aspect ratio originals.

These are stretched to fit widescreen monitors, and look very ugly in that state - not a good impression for someone new to the game, and I suspect a lot of gamers will be running on widescreen rigs.

Any chance of a separate copy of the static screens designed for 16:9/16:10, so circles actually look circular? Failing that even limiting the static part to a 4:3 region in the middle of a wider screen would be an improvement, IMHO - black borders FTW!

I, too, want a box with a nice new disk and goodies etc. etc. Later on this year, if I have to choose between a shiny new box full of CO or DCUO and a multi-gig, soul-crushingly unending download full of CoH...

These guys can't keep repeating the line that we in the EU are considered equally as important as their North American subscribers when they repeatedly pull this kind of malarkey.

Especially these days, when our subs buy many more of those crumpled old US dollars than they ever have...

    [/ QUOTE ]
In this particular area we'd need to be more important than the US to get the same level of attention.

If they launched new boxes over here they'd:

    1) Be very very likely to get a significantly smaller return, judging from current EU vs US playerbases

    2) Have significantly greater costs, given the need to localise packaging, sort out different nationalities' distribution systems, etc...

Smaller return for higher cost - wanting to avoid that isn't really a matter of picking on us.

I just wish everyone would stop using the bloody ships.

Last night I picked 4 on the trot that were all inside ships.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It would be very difficult to tell a story about pirates in the caribbean without at least one mission set on a ship.

[/ QUOTE ]You could have them set in a tech lab or university instead.

    ...or a warehouse, copying DVDs...

    [ QUOTE ]
Blech! And there I was hoping to get a new box with up to date dvds so I don't have to download 12 issues when I do a reinstall. At least now I know I can go buy a magic booster...

    [/ QUOTE ]

You could just burn your CoH folder onto a DVD as a back-up. You can just copy it back onto your hard disk and run the updater (the .eu. one) and pick the same folder and it'll be reinstalled.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Yup - did that over the weekend on a nice shiny new PC (running Vista 64 - hack, spit) and it worked a treat.

One point to emphasise - when you first run the updater and it nags you for a folder, pick the folder a level up from where the actual games files are.

e.g. if all your game files are in:

    C:\Program Files\CoX

    ...tell it to use:

    C:\Program Files

    when it asks.

I see City of Heroes: Architect Edition has just been released, no sign of it in Europe though.

    Amazon.com link

    [/ QUOTE ]
There are no plans for an in-store "Cardboard box" release of I14 in the EU.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
Personally I think that it would have made much more sense to release an issue that contained new official CoX developed arcs/missions/mobs/zones etc before MA was given to us.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I would have said the opposite; if Champions Online comes out as scheduled, which is summer-ish, there'll probably only be time for one more CoX Issue before (maybe at near enough the same time, to steal their thunder) the CO release.

An arc/missions/etc... release now, with MA put off until CO's out, would mean CoX was matching CO with a "no new content now, perhaps some later when players get chance" Issue...not a good tactic.

As it is when CO comes out MA will have been live long enough for there to be a decent body of player-built content to make a fuss of, and CO's release can be met with the dev-built content. Looks like a much safer option to me.

And for that male costume, whats that guy with the metal face in a huge cape? From spiderman or such? Really suits great, saw a guy earlier with such costume.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Generic53927 Man? No. He doesn't have a cape.

Umm... Generic53928 Goblin! No... he doesn't have a cape either.

    *gasp!*

    Then it can only be...

    Dr. Generic53929!

    Edited to pre-empt in-game mods.

    So the game is female . . . . . interesting . . . . . .

    [/ QUOTE ]
Playing a MMORPG, Damz, is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman. You wait until there's a quiet moment, charge in and start bashing away with your huge weapon, then keep at it until there's a sudden whoosh and all you can see is flashing light and sparks.

Then you go and visit a trainer.

    i14 nerfs

It's not a farming nerf as such, they've just reduced all toon's powers across the board on the EU servers. Farming, PvP, PvE, the works. Because we're not the US, so they felt we had it coming.

And all future EU updates will be held back for a month after they've gone live in the US, just because. (If an EU player tries to access a US-only thing via a global facility like the auction houses their client will crash hard, by design; 5% chance of permanent damage to the drive.)

On the plus side, there'll be much less altoholism now we've been cut back to 1 toon per server...

Sarcasm - it's the way of the future

Could this warning be written in bold letters somewhere?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    There is.

    [/ QUOTE ]
There was, at least; in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'.

Given the potentially huge impact of the slot clearance it wasn't at all prominently displayed - IIRC just in the popup of the "AH Info" guy who stands nearby, and gets ignored by everyone that's done the tutorial and not unreasonably assumes they've picked everything significant up from that.

Now the clearance has been halted for active accounts it's less of an issue - haven't checked whether the text in the popup has been updated or removed, mind.
  25. See the previous two posts; if you're not planning to inactivate your account this is no longer an issue.
