More of a FYI for the curious, since a few have asked me who was "in charge" of the server calendar now, here is the answer:
You are.
It may be listed under my name, but it's not "mine" and everyone is welcome to propose additions / changes to it using the Protector Activity Calendar thread.
That said, there are a few people who have agreed to be editors for said calendar. If you're looking to get something published quickly, you can contact any one of us and we'll do our best to update the calendar in a timely manner.
Calendar Editors
- Gothess - Strike Force Sunday
- Healing_Phoenix - Player Event Resource Committee
- kidengineer - Hamidon Raids, "Master of" TFs
- Major_T - Hamidon Raids, TFs
- Shining_Magic - Thursday Night Fights (PVP)
- Stalemate - General events
- Ura_Hero - General events
This list mentions only what each editor is more involved in, and does not limit their actions only to the event(s) listed.
We can add SG events as well, if they're open to the public.
And if you're thinking of running events yourself on a regular basis, please ask for editing rights to assist you in planning.
We're glad to be helping Protector find out what's going on and getting its great community active in server-wide events (GMail account recommended, but not mandatory).
Enjoy. -
OK, I'll take some of that action - if only to give players the cathartic enjoyment of slamming my toons repeatedly against the floor.
No PVP builds (yet), and powersets mostly un-optimised for it, but this'll be fun regardless.
Unless there's something unexpected Thursday this week, I'll be there.
Plus, if Talbein is there I can... -
Dang... competition was harsh!
Until next time. -
Quote:That's funny.Thanks, y'all !
By the way, it is also my brother's birthday (aka Rauck when on Protector server), who is exactly 2 years younger than me (our parents had great timing)...
Happy birthday bro', and to VA Belle and Stormy too !!
Wife (Cassiopea) and her sister are exactly 1 year apart as well. -
It really does look interesting and the style of the game is attractive.
But in my case, I barely have time to spend in CoH, so... dunno. Heck - I still haven't completed Mass Effect or Gears of War - the originals. -
Happy Birthday

May you get all the perfect drops you're looking for today.

You could always try asking for it back, and hope.
Good luck. -
Bummer for Mayhem...
Thanks for the explanation though. -
Quote:I've tried hard to make characters unplayable using the sets offered, and haven't managed yet. Some require more attention (especially when soloing), but on teams the synergy more than makes up for it and they're still useful.Hey guys I'm really new to the game just started today ^.^. So i was wondering what is the best class to pick? I was leaning towards a blaster or a scrapper but I don't know what types i should consider (like fire ice or electric shield ect.) So i was wondering if anyone could help point me in the right direction. I wana be able to have fun but eventually have a good character. Thanks in advance guys :].
I'd also recommend 1) trying an archetype that suits your playstyle and 2) experimenting with various combinations of powersets for that archetype to see what you like best.
I personally tend to turn every character I have into a close-range combatant - even defenders (especially true now that we have the boost to damage for soloing or teaming with less than 2 other players), so I'll pick powers that fit that playstyle.
Others will prefer to use ranged attacks / powers primarily.
Check it all out, see what you like, and if I may suggest one last thing: consider joining the Mentor Project I have linked in my sig.
The boards are overflowing with great players ready to offer their knowledge and experience. They love to help. You'll also find current, useful information here on the boards and at ParagonWiki.
The Mentor Project can also assist you - in person even if you opt for a one-on-one partnership - regardless of the server you're on, and exactly when you need it: ingame.
With all these resources, you may just find that there's sometimes too much information to process in the time you have available to actually play. -
When I got CoH back in summer 2004 I also *invested* (read: wasted) a few dollars into the Official Prima Guide.
I keep it for sentimental reasons, since almost every single page of it has irrelevant information in regards to today's CoH.
ParagonWiki is the definitive spot to check.
Also, if you check out the link in my sig for the Mentor Project, you can join in the N P C channel and ask anything game-related at any time. It may be targeted for new players or returning heroes/villains who need a quick update, but it's a public channel open for anyone who needs it. -
Another thing to try, if you have the inclination, is to use modded drivers and see if that helps.
I've done this using LaptopVideo2Go.com for my older Dell D800 lappy and it at least gets me into the game. Other issues prevent anything worthwhile being done unless I run with all settings at lowest range, but that's caused by the laptop's other hardware.
Your laptop may find itself in the same situation after all, but you won't know if you don't try, right?
HardwareHeaven.com does the same thing for ATI cards.
I'm not going to propose the OmegaDrivers since they don't allow the use of recent drivers modded for older cards. The 7000 series cards were dropped from the Catalyst 6.6 drivers and up. -
Just when I was asking who was in charge of this in other threads, too.
Updating the Calendar. -
So it does sound like it's still ongoing - thanks for the confirmation.
Do you recall who was in charge of coordinating things? -
Quote:Hi TB Belle!I was just listening to the podcast, and I was delighted that the Taxibots were mentioned.
We have been trying for quite a while to welcome heroes new to Paragon City on Infinity, and in fact, it's what I send a LOT of my time doing. One thing you can catch me doing quite often is hanging out in Atlas Park just watching heroes as they talk to Ms. Liberty. I look for their Veteran badges to see if they're new. And I so love meeting new heroes. They're always SOOOO nice!
Anyway, I was going to ask, what is this Coordinator title, and what do they do? What kind of things have others been doing to help out new heroes? I usually look for them in Atlas Park and offer to team up with them for a little while, and offer little tips as we go along and answer questions. I also give tours, around Atlas Park especially, of the badges and plaques to let heroes know a little about the history of the place. Do others do that kind of thing too? Are there other ways that others help out? I'm just looking for neat ideas!
Ooh, has anyone coordinated any kind of official event to help out new heroes? I was thinking maybe sometimes at Infinity, maybe trying to put together a task force or something with a heavy emphasis on new heroes, or at heroes who have not really tried task forces yet. We used to have one every Saturday that the Taxis ran where we tried to emphasize that we were taking it a little slower than a lot of teams, to give everyone a chance to get what's going on and learn about task forces. Maybe I'll try something like that! I've also thought about having something like a "Veterans Fair," where we have a lot of heroes who have been in Paragon City for a while together somewhere like Atlas Park, and we advertise that we're there, and anyone who has any questions about anything can drop by and talk to people who probably have a bit more experience at stuff, whether it is about fighting villains, the best use of powers, information about the city's history, how to succeed at various tasks, shopping at Wentworth's, how to get badges, or whatever!
Anyway, I think this is a wonderful idea, and I really hope it takes off!
So glad to see more taxibots joining in.
The coordinators are basically the "go to" people when questions arise for server events and any prize / loot involved.
For example, on Protector, I handle the hero-side loot while Sokyoku handles red-side. When events are proposed by other mentors, we can hand out some of that if the idea requires it. Others servers have only 1 coordinator for now, but they'll probably want to have 2 on each side to facilitate things later on.
As for a scheduled time for meeting new players, that's entirely left up to each server's mentors. You know your server's scheduling / style best, after all.
Before the Mentor Project, Protector had started the New Player Welcoming Night which was intended to run every month or so. The schedule fluctuated, but when these nights occurred we would ask around the server for volunteers to see what kind of events could be run for new players.
Some of the ones you mention were done (I did the Atlas Park badge/plaque runs a few times), as were others like intro to PVP, sewer runs, even trivia contests.
Tip: Anyone who volunteered to run events was scheduled the first time we did this. some events overlapped due to time constraints so we limited them to 3-4 on the following event.
Since you've already applied at the external website, you can check out the forums there and share event ideas with other mentors. There is also a thread in our CoH boards social groups, IIRC.
And that Veteran's Fair idea sounds really great. Can you report back (at external site) on how it went if you do try it? -
-
This has been added to the Protector Calendar.
-
I'd like to know if any SGs or groups out there are using the Protector Calendar as an embedded link/page/feed on their website and if they have any issues with it.
Also, are the Thursday Night Fights still happening? I was unable to confirm this.
PS - You may have also noticed in the calendar that I've added birthdays in June for which I was able to find dates. -
It's simply impressive that we've now reached 70 registered mentors in this grassroots project.
CoH is definitely living up to it's reputation as one of the friendliest and most helpful MMO communities.
Tips for new mentors:
- If you haven't been made a moderator in the N P C channel yet, ask one of the other mentors / moderators know that you've applied. They can check to see if your name is on the list and then change your status.
- Consider joining the external website (free account). The Info page is getting fleshed out with data pertaining to the game and now will incorporate server specific entries as well. There are also bound to be some topics in the forums which might interest you, or even some topics you can suggest for discussion yourself. You can also announce partnership news there, if you want, and share activity ideas.
- Some servers have taken to promoting their own branch of the Mentor Project in their server section. This is encouraged, especially from server coordinators. It is not cross-posting since every server can propose their own event ideas, promotions, etc.
- Spread the word, especially with new players.
Some stats:
Mentors per server*:
Protector: 17
Virtue: 16
Justice: 14
Freedom: 13
Liberty: 7
Triumph: 6
Infinity: 4
Pinnacle: 4
Victory: 4
Champion: 3
Guardian : 3
Union (EU): 1
Training Room: 1
* Some mentors are active on multiple servers, hence the disparity in total number of mentors per server and actual registrations. -
-
The Mentor Project may be something useful to you in addition to whatever SG you join.
Follow the link in my signature for more info, and welcome back to Paragon City. -

Quote:AFAIK, there was no obligation to run these as "Master of" runs - which would allow th use of all our powers and tools.Ummmm yes? Aren't all ITF's/STF's Mo attempts till someone dies? LOL Unless of course the contest demands we run them outside of the limits, or if the other team did them without them... then I won't handicap my team for nothing.
EDIT: Stale! Can you and Cass get on TeamSpeak? I know you dont have headsets, but you would at least be able to hear whats going on, and not be totaly lost on what we're doingAnd how about you Yeti? You have TS3?
We do have headsets, and TS3. Good idea to make things go faster with communications.
So, start this tonight?
