Funcom/EA was banking on raking in money ASAP on an undermarketed game exploring new frontiers in MMO gaming. Its going to take time to get its feet steady, so I'm not sure what the heck their strategic thinking was. Oh right, EA. Hopefully Guild Wars 2 will show that there's still a valid MMO market stateside.

... but doesn't Sony already have a super hero MMO?
Then again, I'd be totes down with City of DC Heroes. -
Zwill said Freedom was a success, and I'll stand by his judgement.

You gave us a world where we could fly. I can't thank you enough for that.

Quote:Yes, but look at the money they no longer have to spend on Paragon or either of Paragon's projects. Money that no longer has to be budgeted and can be re-allocated elsewhere, like say bailing out their flailing non-Lineage Asian grindfests. But that doesn't make a lick of sense, not even a tiny shred. When you can't pay your bills, you don't quit your second job. CoH was a compartmentalized money-making machine. It wasn't costing them any money or resources to keep it going, and it was in fact padding their revenue stream. However high or low that profit margin was, it was still profit, and now that profit is gone.
I'm just hoping Carbine isn't next. And that Arenanet has an escape plan. -
If the lease on the engine was the issue, then why shut down the whole studio that's also working on a second different project?

ChernobylCheerleader - 50+1 Rad/Rad Defender - The first character I really grokked with, my first to 50.
T-34 - 50+1 Elec/TW Tanker - My first tank to 50 and he was just hitting his stride...
Dyre Woof - 29 TW/WP Brute - I wish I had rolled him earlier, the world needs more big dumb brutes.
Flamethrower Ferret - 24 Fire/Fire Dom - Originally a blaster that I got to 50, got disillusioned with, and then re-rolled. With i24 coming I had kinda regretted nuking his first incarnation, but now... yeah.
But most of all:
Night Widow Ricki - 50+3 Night Widow - My first real main, my first real RP alt, and the one that got me in with the crazy kids in the Entropy Legion.
Tide Shifter - 50 DP/Kin Corruptor - And to think I finally got into regularly RPing with him and with all the stories he and the Hyperion Force have fallen into too.
Opposite Reaction - 50+3 StJ/SD Scrapper - Isabella had many iterations before I finally settled on her current form, and I was never happier than watching her keeping her friends amused or leading the way on iTrials.
Somewhere, out there, there will always be a dashing red-haired pirate flashing dual pistols with his friends and loves by his side. A giant of a young man wielding the heroic heritage of Mother Russia. A meter maid with a riot shield who never let anything stop her dreams. A classy quiet woman who played no game she couldn't win.
... I need a drink. -
Quote:Between fumbling Aion and Blade & Soul, NCSoft lost $6 million last quarter. He isn't actually. NCSoft isn't cutting the game because it is losing money. I would guess that the costs associated with starting GW2 were enough that they want to cut something to make their books look better. And sadly for us they appear to be cutting Paragon Studios and COH.
So of course they kill City. -
I have a 29 TW/WP on SOs, so I know how tedious it might see at the beginning.
But I also have a purpled out 50 Elec/TW, so I know there's a promised land on the other side. Stick with it, the more time and inf you invest the more you'll be amazed -
Quote:Yup. I think the big thing with #3 is that they are going full bore on adding new features that do not exist: Incarnate content. If that's not your cup of tea, then, well...In my opinion, this can done, broadly, in one of three ways.
- Move more existing features behind VIP status. I see this as a non-starter, as it would almost certainly aggravate existing Premium players.
- Variations on giving VIPs more points. This includes making things that are purchase-only cost less for VIPs, giving VIPs more (existing types of) things for free, etc. This is risky, because it risks reducing revenue, because the increase in Premiums compelled to upgrade to VIP might not offset the loss in spend by VIPs currently paying out to buy points.
- Add new features that do not yet exist and fully gate them behind VIP status, the way Incarnate content is. It's difficult to speculate what these features might be, since I'm not particularly aware of what new features might be on the horizon.

/em flicks cable and TV on
"Tonight on the Mythbusters, we discover how high you can send a villain flying?" Random shots of a Skull-clothed Buster getting knocked into the air by Grant's robotics. Cut to Marauder grinning as he straps on his gauntlets. "And is dual pistols really as weak as everyone says it is?" Random shots of Adam and Jamie blasting away at the Vanguard Base targets. Adam says, "I think we need something bigger for Swap Ammo." Cut to Adam wielding a .38 with a fusion hammer attached.

"... doIhearfifty?Fifty?" "One hundred!" "One hundred inf for old base salvage? Just when you thought Barry couldn't get any dumber." "What they don't know is I know a collector over on the Market board who's offering a half a billion for this..."
/em switches channel again
"NoBoDy CaN sAvE yOu NoW!" "Spike, I told you sending Princess Luna that Dark Astoria travel brochure was a bad idea!" "Hey, look! Donuts!"
/em switches channel
"Chris, I'm tellin' you, I love this guy. He's got strength, a fiery aura, and just look at how he wields that soul power!"
"And comin' into the arena now its Volkswagen Scirocco! He's got the windup, and the sand storm - backbackbackbackback GONE!"
/em turns off TV, heads back to the PC to be a hero -

My character inspired by my Exalted Terrestrial princess wound up a Beast/Nature. I'm almost tempted to switch or make an alt out of a Thug/Nature though. Ah, the many uses of Soul-Stirring Performance.

My most thrilling fight is still when Manta the pre-i23 stalker and Ricki the night widow tanked the Eye of the Leviathan. I'm still not sure how we pulled that off.

Quote:OK...I'm still not hearing an argument for why we're not soaking the Premium players to generate income for the company, rather than soaking the VIPs.
Quote:VIPs get *half* as many points as Premium players do for the same amount of money.
You're not hearing an argument because you're leaving out a lot of the benefits of being a VIP. -

That's because it is Johnny, so most of us already know he's just taking a different angle at the grease spot on the plains where the dead horse used to be.

Quote:With 33% or so E/N defense, the Galaxies become not even a nuisance. He wouldn't have as much defense exemping on a Moonfire though. My Elec's biggest challenges so far have been groups of Tarantula Queens and Dark Ring Mistresses, as even resisted boss levels of psionic damage can pile up pretty quickly, and our friends the Cimerorans.I have found the Negative Energy hole on my Electric/Warmace tank only a problem when there are mobs full of baddies with negative energy attacks (for example Galaxies from Council - the Moonfire TF can be painful), particularly ones with -recharge mixed in (as it kills your mitigation tools of Energise and Power Sink). Most the time if there are only one or two foes with it then I don't really notice them.
