I won't mention prices here, but in my mind, they are quite reasonable.
  2. If all 50 attempts were for trademarked IP or were 'common' terms, yes, I can see you getting denied on all 50.

And putting stuff in all caps won't change things. Names are case-insensitive.

I've been playing since 2005 - only rarely do I run into name issues, and they never take more than 2 or 3 iterations to come up with something close to what I originally wanted.

But I do know it's been damn quiet in every zone. All the time.

I would hate to be a new player right now.

EDIT: Just logged in. 89 matches found blueside. 2 to 1 ratio has been mostly true forever. That means ~45 redside.

6PM on a night before many are off for 5 days. And Pinn's got less than 150 players not hidden.
Bill? I thought you got the memo. Everyone's playing on Freedom or Virtue, thus contributing to the "this game is in trouble, there's too many players for the hardware" spammage.

  4. I'm here, just haven't been following these forums much.

OK. Here's what we DO know.

    1) This only happens with some servers, not all, so we know it's not the client/ISP connection that is faulty. Else everywhere would show the same symptoms.

    2) It does not occur with a secondary ISP, therefore the problem is not within NCSOFt's server farm or outbound connection.

I'm reviewing this with a coworker (god I love working with networking eggheads) and we're thinking this might be symptoms of a blackhole router 'tossing' packets that are too large (and therefore fragmented). Try setting MTU lower on your NIC, say, 1000 bytes, as a test, then 500 if the problem doesn't clear. This will result in more packets, but less will be broken up in transit (and thus potentially lost, because if a piece of a fragmented packet gets lost, then the re-transmit request goes for the whole packet, not just the piece.)

Another test you can do is to tracert to the target IP/host, take note of the last device that sends a reply, then PING to that host using larger and larger packets, until such time as you start noting lost packets. Set your MTU to this packet size, or lower, and see if you're still noting issues.

A caveat: pinging lots of large packets can sometimes cause ISP's to get upset at you - I'd not recommend setting pings higher than 14400 bytes.

Definitely take your results to TWC, and let them know this is LIKELY either their edge router or a device directly connected to it - if they try and tell you that it's 'off their network' then they can at the very least tell you the IP of the problem device, and you can then WHOIS that IP and contact the operator based on that. The tracert and ping test above should reveal this IP for you, so you won't necessarily have to put up with TWC's 'support' if you don't want to.

Just for grins, post output of your tracert here - we'll be able to see where that 'last hop' is and perhaps lend some insight.
  5. Awesome teaser vid, Michelle.

And yes... don't take the e-tards personally. Your lone critic probably uses iMovie to showcase his dog's 'unique' snoring sound.
  6. I LIKE Spartan's ideas.

    These would be kickin'.

Definitely NETWORK related - those red spikes are dropped packets.

How do you connect your computer to your Internet gateway device? what is it (cable/DSL/wireless/satellite/dialup)?

If your Internet provider has a "network diagnostic" application, run it, and see how many errors or problems it kicks back. If you don't have one, then you can do some basic testing at BroadbandReports.com >> http://www.dslreports.com/linequality
  9. Did OpenOffice install anything ELSE, such as WindowBlinds or other 'desktop manager' software?

If so, it's probably not playing nice with the game. Go into the desktop manager software and add CityOfHeroes.EXE as an exclusion.
  10. Two things:

One - just cos you copied the files over, didn't mean you set the Windows Firewall to the same settings. If a program can't connect to a server, and others can, it's usually firewall related. If all else fails, set your gaming system up as a 'DMZ' system - this opens all ports TO THAT BOX ONLY. You'll want to refrain from non-gaming activities (and uninstall anything not game-related) on that box while DMZ'd, as it is wide open to the Internet and therefore vulnerable. Also turn off any file sharing, and unmount any mapped drives, so your other computers on your network can't be accessed by anything that does get to the gaming rig.

Two - if you want to simply 'verify' all the copied files, MOVE the CoHUpdater.EXE from the program's install folder to the desktop and run it from there. It SHOULD ask you where you wish to 'install' - simply point it back to where you parked all the files. It will check all those files, and download a fresh copy of itself to place into the game install folder along with them. This is a 'download in minutes' solution as opposed to several hours.
  11. if Desktop Comp is a service, you should (!) be able to disable it as an administrator. Of course, with Win7 extending the concept of the "padded cell environment" even further than Vista, there are things that not even the administrator can do, which means tweaking the box to play nice with your legacy apps becomes.... difficult.

    That said

    NET STOP "<service name>"

    and

NET START "<service name>" are very useful when you have services that you want to toggle off and on.
  12. I think the add-on goodie packs are great, as long as they don't contain any competitive advantages.

Base editing - cosmetic items only (hanging plants, water features, more furniture, perhaps new wall/floor/roof textures, etc).

    Costumes - cosmetic

    Emotes - cosmetic

Powers - travel only, LONG recharge, unslottable, long interrupt time
  13. *snags an armband from Neko* I can get behind that too.

Guilty pleasure? Mocha on a cold rainy Friday morning, along with some music and random Twittering in amongst the servers.

I would guess that something grabbed your hosts file. Time to do a thorough malware/spyware scan.

Technically, the Lost are mutates, not mutants. The former are changed due to outside influence, whereas the latter hold latent or expressive aberrant genetic sequences.

For that reason, the Lost should (!) fall into Science origin.

So the weeaboos got their pack, but what about all the cops, commandos and mercenaries? Don't you think they shoulda' got somethin'? Hopefully that's in the works.

Other than the obvious gripe above, I do like the MA pack. Ninja run is more viable as a travel power for my natural type characters.
I see a lot of that as a crossover between Tech and Natural. Perhaps Tech II and Natural II will be the Space Marines pack.

And yes, we are wanting more of the "Superscience" and less of the "Mad Science" in the next Science Booster. I would LOVE a nano-shift costume change emote, for one, with a cloud of shiny metal hexagons "cocooning" the character and then shattering off (a la the quicksilver effect in "Invisible Man").
  24. OK.

    Re: VirtueVerse Moving Forward

Post by admin » Wed Nov 18, 2009 1:00 pm
Sorry guys, Kadekawa stole me for a fairly large project so I've been swamped. I did set up the install settings but I'm at the logistical cross roads now of finding space on the server to set everything up. Virtueverse is quite large so I'm concerned that we won't be able to run the site in two places for an extended amount of time. Its stalled at figuring out the logistics of getting a new host or purchasing extra space. The site currently uses about 12 GBs of disk space and database space, we only have 20 GB total on the server, and the same server also hosts Union Verse and two other websites.

Soul is also going to be stepping down as the public administrator for the site.

But this is basically stuck until space can be figured out and that ball is in the court of more then just myself, its not my server. What I would like to do is set it up on a new host, with a temporary address, start the migration and eventually move the domain names over, but this needs approval from Kade once we're sure there is money to cover a new hosting account.
Note the second to last paragraph.

I've not had the time to manage the site of late, and a LOT of people have stepped up to fill in for me, so it's only fair that they be given the mantle/scepter/crown of thorns/etcetera. I'll still keep my pages up, and if I find time I may fiddle with Wiki concepts and occasionally help folks with stuff, but... yah.

    Have fun, y'all.
