Quick fix - slotting five Ruin into Focused Burst will softcap you to AoE as well.
Otherwise, it doesn't look too bad. -
-
Quote:Very true.Exactly. It is a far more ellegant solution and actually adds new continuity rather than just paving over the old and pretending it doesn't exist.
Yes, racism is bad. Pretending a persons race doesn't influence who they are is worse.
My major quibble with Hollywood is that, when it comes to actors, the people who do the hiring are able to discriminate freely based on race, gender, age, height, weight, and a variety of other factors. In any other industry, this would be a cause for an outcry, but we seem to accept it in our entertainment.
My basic premise is that, when looking for an actor or actress, the major determining factor should be ability - how well they are able to pull off the role. If a role requires gravitas, you look to Anthony Hopkins or Laurence Fishburne, because they do gravitas well. If a role requires significant physicality/stunt work/martial arts, there are any number of actors you could look to, from Wesley Snipes (when he gets out of jail) to Jet Li to Jason Statham. Race shouldn't be a consideration.
My rule about whether a fictional property should worry about changes to the race of any of the actors is this: If it is *about* race and racism, you may want to look carefully at the casting. If it is about historical figures, you want to find someone who can act the part and look it with minimal prosthetic alteration. If it's based on a novel, comic book or television series, why the heck not? Wild Wild West had its issues, but they weren't predicated around Will Smith's race; it just wasn't that good a movie and didn't really capture the feel of the show. Why would a black or hispanic actor playing Conan be bad? If Conan does the requisite smiting of bad guys and gets the girl, who cares?
The problem, and Lastjustice said this first, is that for too long the default setting for characters was white. The problem with switching Luke Cage to a white actor is that the character is, at least in part, about race - that's how he was conceived and portrayed in comics for years. He's from Harlem, was in a street gang, et cetera. He was deliberately conceived to be a black character, and his race is an important facet of who Luke Cage is.
But, let's take Angel for example. His story is that he's from a wealthy family and was disowned for growing wings. Nothing in that story cares whether his wealthy family is white, black, Asian, or purple. Race just isn't important to Angel's story - he's about class and being rejected for being a mutant. It wouldn't make any difference if he was cast in a race-blind manner.
For some characters and some stories, race does matter. For some, it doesn't - and if it isn't important, why not cast whoever fills the role best, regardless of race? -
Quote:There is no other species on this planet that acts. There is unlikely to be one in the next 50 years. You are making an argument that is deliberately obtuse and outrageous, and is logically indefensible.Who said anything about fictional people playing fictional people. My position is that there is no valid reason to suddenly change a characters race/gender/species.
Personally I wouldn't raise any objection to Superman discovering a new love interest other than Lois Lane who could be black, asian, latino whatever. I wouldn't even object if the love interest was gay.
Talking animals are fictional. They don't exist. Your argument is flawed. -
Quote:...seriously?Comic book characters do not exist. They are as real as talking animals. Actors and actresses can easily portray both. You lose.
Fictional characters do exist. We read about them and see them in the movies every day. In that sense, they are much more real than talking animals, which do not exist outside of fictional sources. Which is why we use real people who exist (actors) to portray fictional characters. It's quite hard to use people who do not exist (talking animals) to portray fictional characters. Talking animals, here, are a subset of fictional characters. But actors and actresses portray fictional characters all the time on film - you don't see fictional people playing fictional people in film yet.
And, before you go there, I'm not going into animation, I'm only discussing live film at this juncture. That likewise covers CGI creations in their entirety for the purpose of this discussion. (Though to date, all CGI creations that function as fictional people are based, at some point, on real people.)
Real person portraying fictional person - possible.
Real person portraying talking animal - possible.
Fictional person portraying fictional person - impossible. -
Quote:It is absolutely not.No it isn't. It's just as valid an argument as someone wanting to change a characters race because of their personal prejudices.
Animals are not people. Talking animals do not exist. You're positing a hypothetical with a negligible chance of occurring within our lifetimes as an argument.
Actors of every race and background do exist, and even work for a living in Hollywood in the real world.
Also, acting is not purely voice - there is a physical presence that has to be considered unless you go to voice acting, which is outside the discussion here.
Try again. -
Quote:That's ridiculous and you know it is.Okay then you should have no problem then if they decide to cast the part of Lois Lane as a talking dog or cat. Cuz if the actress is good enough to nail the personality and presence of Lois Lane it will carry over to voice acting.
If race shouldn't be a deciding factor neither should species.
Are you done? -
Quote:Conversely, is there any overarching reason why Lois Lane has to be caucasian? Is it a key, defining part of her character? Is it integral to understanding who she is?It should be "best actress that fits the character", in this case caucasian.
So the entire history of the character as caucasian means nothing?
These kind of theoretical question seem to come up alot in these forums. As far as I'm concerned, if there is going to be a change of that nature to a long standing character like that, there had better be a damn good reason for it beyond the whims of the production staff. And no, being the "best actress" is not good enough.
I think not.
I don't think anyone is saying that, in terms of movie casting, that it should be changed for the sake of change. What I would like to see is the casting director having truly open auditions, and casting the person who best encapsulates that director's vision of Lois Lane, regardless of the actress's race. If an actress can nail the personality and presence of Lois Lane, shouldn't we be more concerned with ability than looks? -
Actually, I was thinking earlier today...
I would like to see an Elseworlds Superman who was black.
Would he be the same paragon of truth, justice and the American way if he was denied the privilege of being white? Growing up black in the 1930s would certainly have given him a different outlook. (Also begs the question of whether you keep Ma and Pa Kent white or also change their ethnicity for the purposes of the story.)
Does he follow the teachings of Dr. King about non-violence? Does he find the Panthers more inspiring? Does he keep his beliefs in America despite the systematic persecution of people who look like him? Does he rise above or does he snap? Does he go the radio show route and go against the KKK?
As to the OP - it entirely depends upon the setting for the movie. In a 'historical' Superman where he lands in Kansas in the 1930s, Lois' being black would be a big deal. If it was set in a more modern era (Clark lands in Kansas in 1980 and is working in Metropolis in the present day) I like to think that it would be a non-issue. Superman is supposed to be a true believer in America, and I don't think Lois' appearance would affect his relationship in any way. -
Quote:Did you count in Rage downtime?I did some calculations on your build. Using Jab -> KO Blow -> Burn -> Haymaker -> Foot Stomp as an attack chain, I came out with an average of 262 DPS. That was averaged with Fiery Embrace's uptime vs downtime. It also assumed Rage would be double-stacked at all times, which isn't quite the case with your build. Still, it compares well to my DM/SD Scrapper's 313 potential DPS attack chain with Soul Drain and AAO fully saturated.
I think I may make a FA/SS Tanker now. It doesn't depend on any conditions (10 enemies in range) for doing Scrapper-level DPS. With only one enemy in range, my Scrapper only does 221 DPS and a lot of AV fights end up like that. -
Quote:It just means it's more impressive that you soloed her at all, even if you were 51 to her 50. She was ignoring a whole lot of your DPS.Well that is what I get for never bothering to look. I cannot say I prepared or did much homework. I saw the mission, needed a tip, just said "@#$% it," flipped the switch to AV, and had a go.
I know my AV soloist will never take out, say, Infernal... -
-
It's always been there. Players don't have access to it.
-
Quote:Well, it might also have to do with Nightstar having both 50% smashing resistance and 30% negative. She's not going to be the easiest Praetorian for a DM to solo.Nah, just the level shift. I did not think it would be worth discussing if I had used anything else. Didn't even have Soul Drain fuel (although as a /Regen, that much fuel around that long might get lucky and drop you).
Oh, and just for the update, Nightstar outlasted me as a 51 AV, but aside from Purples and PVPs, I am probably pretty close to a wall as far as what I can eek out of him.
Clearly, /Regen needs to be buffed -
I'd count the Alpha slot...
But if you can take AVs, try taking them at even con now. If you're level-shifted, set for level 51 AVs, see how you do.
AV soloing is all about pushing the envelope as far as you can.
I know my Inv/Fire tank couldn't solo an AV before he got his Alpha slot (Cardiac makes endurance sustainable for him) but I haven't gone big game hunting since I got the level shift. -

Quote:Mod5 nuked a thread about My Little Pony, which was nominally allowed by the forum rules. This thread is specifically disallowed by the forum rules...You'd think that would happen instantly. But if this thread is basically pro-CoH (I haven't looked at the video yet to be honest) you'd be amazed how likely the Mods will "look the other way" on this.
...yeah. I'm done here. Never mind me. -
Quote:The use of -range is to immunize the tanker from return fire. Without the -range, Recluse can use his ranged attack chain with impunity. A taunt moderately slotted for range, in combination with the -range, allows a hovering tanker to negate all of Recluse's attacks. If Recluse was made immune to -range, the tanker would still be able to hover and taunt, but would be subjected to return fire. (This relative impunity to Recluse's damage is likely not intended, and why I suspect the -range portion of taunt may be nerfed. It only applies to the hover-tanking tactic.)But the -range is not the important aspect, rather the threat generation is. Auto-hit is good. Threat generation is good. -Range is helpful, but not vital; at least I do not think it is; am I mistaken? If they make Recluse immune to -Range, will this tactic no longer work for a taunting tanker?
That particular tactic has nothing to do with exploiting Recluse's tether, it's all about avoiding damage.
Use of a toggle debuff is outside my experience and expertise - I can only speculate. -
Quote:Well...Actually I haven't read any Reynolds yet. I may have to take a look. Any recommendations to start with?
If you like film noir, Century Rain's a nice one-off. Otherwise, I'd probably start with Revelation Space and follow it up with Chasm City.
I've re-read Chasm City a couple of times, but I haven't been able to reread the main series (Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, Absolution Gap) because my copy of Revelation Space went missing somewhere. Chasm City is a self-contained story in the same universe, and I do like it quite a bit.
Reynold's science is very good, as far as I can tell, though he does take an extreme hard line on the Fermi Paradox. -
Quote:You forgot Alastair Reynolds' "series which I don't think has a snappy name but starts with Revelation Space."From what you cited, it seems to me that TV is dying, not science fiction, let alone space opera. Anyway, I don't watch TV very much anymore except via the DVR--a friend's DVR as I don't own a TV or DVR myself.
I've been reading that there is a similar decline in the publishing market too but, really, you could have fooled me having just finished Anathem, Vacuum Diagrams and a Use of Weapons. I've heard that e-readers are reviving things a bit too but I refuse to own one of those blasted things.
As someone else in the thread said, these things seem to go in generational cycles.
What I think may be happening is something like franchise fatigue. People are getting tired of seeing revival, re-boots, re-makes and continuations of the old money makers. Really, I'm sick to death of Trek and Star Wars. I want something new! Here are some examples of space opera I'd like to see as movies or television series:
- Niven's Known Space
- Vinge's Zones of Thought
- Bank's Culture
- Baxter's Xeelee Sequence

Quote:Under the same principle, I'd switch the slotting for Frozen Fists and Freezing Touch.Thank you for the suggestion of moving Armageddon. Didn't have FA before inherent Fitness, and put it in when I read in the forums how much better they made it. Didn't even think to move that set.
I think you both are right about IS, need to look at improving that. -

Quote:It's not a bad concept. In fact, I wish knockback was more prevalent in the game. Even Superman gets knocked around sometimes.Go Elec/. You can get all the mez protection you need and skip grounded. You're going for a soft-cap build, so you'd be taking CJ anyway, which means you have immobilize covered.
While I get what you're saying, there aren't many times cars and large objects get thrown at you. While KB powers exist, there's always the fact that you can naturally be agile, thus, making it harder to knock you off your feet. Agility isn't a superpower.
I'd actually suggest getting 4 pts. of KB protection, for a more believable RP character. Yeah, you can stay on your feet, but when something with more mass than you comes your way and hits you, you're going to fall down.
Seriously, Electric Armor is the way to go, if your concept allows for it. Skip Grounded and go.
I play a /fire armor scrapper with 4 points of KB protection; that really does protect against the vast majority of knockback effects. I only really get knocked around by Fake Nemmies and occasionally when two KB effects hit me at the same time.
Go for nothing. Flop around like a fish. I'd think it would be highly entertaining for a concept. -
Quote:To make an Invuln without knockback protection, you would have to skip Unyielding and Unstoppable. Unyielding, of course, also contains hold, stun, immobilize and sleep protections. Before you ask, yes, I know that this is a horrifically bad idea. I don't care. I've got this idea stuck in my head of a kid who found a magic lamp, wished to be "invincible," but never got any of the Required Secondary Powers which usually go along with being an indestructible superhero. Like, say, being able to "plant your feet" and be immovable. I don't care how utterly unbreakable you might be, having a body which can't be damaged does nothing to decrease your ability to be batted around like a pinball when somebody throws a car at your head... and the mental image associated with that is hilarious.
(He'll probably have blown wishes #2 and #3 on like, an Xbox and a sports car. Which he can't drive yet.)
Ideally, I want this character (whose name is the appropriate epithet "Invincibility") to have softcapped defense and resistance at level 50 (and not caring if there's much of a Psi hole - it'd be nice, but for my RP build, not required), and as many Mez protections as I can get without taking a single point of Knockback Protection. I'm not sure if it's possible, but I want to be immune to all mezzes but not KB.
Yes, I will have a secondary build for non-RP, when I really wanna crack my indestructible knuckles (wait, is that even possible? is my cartilage as indestructible as I am? OH GOD THE SCIENCE) and kick some butt.
What mez protections can I even take (including IOs and power pools, of course) which wouldn't give me the KB protection I want to avoid?
If you're serious about the concept... delving into the leaping pool gets you combat jumping for immobilize protection. I'd suggest acrobatics for a little hold protection, but it takes out knockback as well. Aid Self gives a short-duration stun resistance effect.
It's a really bad idea, honestly. If you wanted to make a tank without knockback protection, it's a lot easier with Fire Armor, Electric Armor, or Dark Armor, each of which has a full-strength mez protection without any knockback protection.
Basically, you'll be relying on defense to keep the mezzes missing you, because we can't get you any hold protection. I'm not sure how fun it would be to play, but if you want to try it, go for it.
