I noticed this about Discworld and Xanth. I understand and even agree with the Discworld series being separated as it's not so much a series of continuous events as it is a bunch of distinct stories that all happen to take place in the same world. But then they put Xanth in as one entry, and I would argue the same thing about that series.

I agree wholeheartedly that Potter is better than Twilight, I've just had my share of arguments with people who say that Potter is the best thing ever written, only to find out that they don't really read much. I'm just tired of people who say Rowling is the greatest author ever, and then find that they haven't read Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Lewis, Orwell, Tolkien, etc. Potter is something that from a popularity standpoint I would expect to see on a list like this, but that I would personally leave out of this list were I compiling it. Not that it's a bad series, but certainly not the best.

Two heavy hitters, Tolkien and Madeline L'Engle (and boy, should some of her stuff be on this list), both confronted the idea of whether fantasy is just for kids.

Here's a favorite quote of mine from L'Engle on the subject:

“The artist, if he is not to forget how to listen, must retain the vision which includes angels and dragons and unicorns, and all the lovely creatures which our world would put in a box marked Children Only
And I have ranted before and in other places about drawing an arbitrary line and saying "these are children's books" and "these are adult books". Granted, much of what most people classify as "adult science fiction/fantasy" I wouldn't want to see being pushed on 7 year olds, and I don't think many of them would appreciate it. But then, I started reading many of the authors on this list when I was about 10.

Likewise, The Princess Bride. I'm probably one of the few people who own and have read the book, but that's because the movie is one of those rare films that is better than the book. Anybody who has actually read The Princess Bride would laugh at its classification as "fantasy".
Meh, I would consider 1984 as sci-fi without batting an eye, especially for the time it was written in. I see no problem with labeling Animal Farm as fantasy. Yes, they are both political satire, but then again, so is much of what Terry Pratchett has written and I don't know anybody who doesn't consider Discworld to be a fantasy series. Point is, it can be both.

Same with Princess Bride. Yes I own the book and I've read it about as often as I've seen the movie. I would argue about the film being better than the book, but it largely comes down to taste. The film is certainly more accessible for more people, but in my opinion the book is better. And while it certainly also falls into satire (and romance and mystery and suspense and several other categories) it can comfortably be classified as fantasy.

That was my first thought after reading through the list as well, but as Smersh said, there are quite a few books that blend the two. There are also some that dance playfully back and forth between the two without so much "blending". Zelazny is a good example of both of these. His Amber series has some environments where magic is strong, and some where tech is strong, and some where they meet. His unrelated novel "Changeling" is an example of a story of two worlds, one of sci-fi and one of fantasy, and characters interact with both.

Changeling didn't make the list, and although I enjoyed it (as I enjoyed most of Roger Zelazny's writing) it probably didn't deserve to. Even getting rid of things on the list that I certainly wouldn't put in the top 100, there are many others that weren't on the list that I'd rank ahead of it.

Anyway, there was about a third of the list that I haven't yet read, about a third of the list that I don't think should be in a top-100 list (in favor of several others which didn't make the cut), and the last third all fought for a spot in my top 10. Like many others have said, there were quite a few that I had to leave behind but it felt like betrayal to do so. Canticle for Leibowicz, Lewis's Space Trilogy, Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser, Watership Down, Elric... great stories all but 10 is such a limiting number, I had to make some hard choices and these were left behind. And the thing that bothers me about "favorite" questions is if you asked me tomorrow, I'd probably pick a notably different selection.

It bothered me that there were only two of Pratchett's Discworld books on the list. It bothered me more that if I were to pick my favorite 5 from that series, neither of those books would be among them (at least today). It bothered me that there were so many Gaiman books on the list, not that he doesn't deserve to be on the list, but not that many times when so many other authors were missing or sorely underrepresented. And it bothered me that a list that included both Pratchett and Gaiman didn't have Good Omens on it.

On the other hand, the forums cannot contain how pleased I am that neither Harry Potter nor Twilight were on the list.

Internet access costs me LESS than it did ten years ago and is infinitely faster. Televisions cost me what they did ten years ago. It shouldn;t shock anyone the monthly fee for MMOs has remained the same or gone down.

Oh and by the way, the average salaries for programmers, graphic artists, QA, and writers have all gone SHARPLY down in the last 5 years. Overhead is absolutely no excuse for them to be giving me less value for my $15/month than I was getting before they hit on the idea of charging us for what used to be included.
Hmmm, I don't buy all of those things often enough to be tracking the prices over that time scale but... Movie tickets have gone up in price, in fact when some less "newsy" sites present anecdotal evidence of inflation, movie tickets is usually one of the things they point to. The last video game I bought close to it's release date was, well, CoH and I came to that party 4 months late. Cable TV prices are going up, and in fact satellite TV companies make a point of highlighting that in all of their commercials. My internet has been bundled with my cable bill for the last 10 years, it may make up a smaller portion of that price, but that price has gone up. Haven't bought a new TV in the last 10 years, I can watch it on my computer monitor.

Salaries in general in most industries have gone down in the last two years or so. More and more students for the past 10 or so years have been looking for careers in this industry, so laws of supply and demand would seem to indicate that companies can get away with paying less for people in the fields you've indicated. Despite this, as Oliin pointed out, salaries in the field are generally increasing.

Its also possible that if you and everyone else didn't buy the booster packs, you just wouldn't be getting this at all. You seem to be under the impression that the art department sits in a room all by themselves and cranks stuff out at their whim, and then NCSoft decides what of that output they will give away with subscriptions, and what they will charge for in a booster pack. That's not how this works. Production and design decide collectively what an Issue will contain, and then the art department makes that. Production and design decide what a booster pack will contain, and then the art department makes that. They can certainly change their minds down the road, but most everything made for this game starts with a decision about what to create that justifies the work by specifying what its supposed to be a part of.

The Steampunk pack justifies the existence of the Steampunk costumes. The Steampunk pack did not steal the Steampunk costumes from Issue 20.

The bottom line is that by buying those packs, we contributed more money to NCSoft. If you believe NCSoft took that money and bought hookers and champagne, we got screwed. On the other hand, if you believe NCSoft put that money back into Paragon Studios in terms of hiring more staff and getting more resources, then the net result is that we the players ended up with more game. The notion that if we didn't spend as much money, we'd still get the exact same game but for less money is only true if you believe the Booster Pack revenue goes into the Paragon Studios Carnival Cruise fund or that some guy in Korea that looks like Chiun from the Remo Williams movie is getting rich off of us.

Take money away from NCSoft, and by extension Paragon Studios, and we get less game. That's inescapable. And when the devs produce less game, we all lose. Sure, no one wants to pay more, but that's the fundamental equation. More money equals more game. Less money equals less game. There's simply no way to calculate how much more game we have because of the revenue NCSoft has collected from Booster Packs, but its almost certainly substantial. Maybe they haven't spent as much time on the specific things you want as you would like. But that would probably still be true if they produced less game overall.

The question is: is it worth the trade. And the nice thing about booster packs is we can decide for ourselves individually. If we want them, we buy them. The customers that don't want them or can't afford them don't have to pay for them. They still indirectly benefit from the rest of us funding more game, and we directly get what we want and can afford to pay for.
This post wins. Bonus points for Remo Williams mention.

Fundamentally, this and all micro-transactions, indeed almost all business transactions in the world come down to "is it worth the trade." Some of the costume packs that they've done aren't worth me spending money on. I have no interest in the wedding pack, for example. I took a look at it again recently when it was announced at half-price. Even at half-price, I didn't think it was worth the trade. Some people like it, good for them. Their purchase pays for more advancements to the game, good for all of us. I'm willing to pay extra for things that I think are worth it, this upcoming pack is one of them. If you aren't willing to pay for it, fine, no one is making you. But don't complain that you aren't getting it.

Really. One of the few alts I have that would use a shoulder kitten is male, but that's female only. They really should make more pieces (including already existing pieces, not just new ones) available for more body types.

Soul Drain - especially on a Rikti mission. Room full of monkeys with a LT or boss in the middle. Herd em up, Soul Drain, all monkeys are dead, you're super-charged, and boss soils himself.

A few seconds later, named boss crashes to the ground in front of me with one HP. Strategy has been reproduced a few times on outdoor maps against flying bosses/EBs. At higher levels it seldom reduces them to one HP, but it does make the fights much easier.

  9. @Yosomono:

The drop rate for threads/new components for new Incarnate powers within the new trials does seem to be faster than the drop rate for shards was in level 50 TFs when Alpha was introduced. In that regard, yes you're right.

I did emphasize some qualifying items in that sentence because there are a few gameplay differences to bear in mind, depending on your style of play.

At this moment, threads only drop during the new trials, of which there are two. You need to run these repeatedly to open access to the new Incarnate slots. Having run enough to open your new slot, you will probably have accumulated enough threads/components to slot a tier 1 or probably a tier 2.

When I19 was released, you needed to do one arc, once to open your alpha slot. There were 4 already existing level 50 TF's which dropped shards. Additionally, any other level 50 content could drop shards (even soloing radio missions) and there were two new level 50 TF's added (recommended that you have at least your tier 1 alpha slotted).

With I20, shards could potentially drop any time you play your 50 (assuming your alpha slot has been unlocked). Even exemping down to run level 2 missions with your friend's new alt, to say nothing of all of the existing TF's or running Oroborus missions.

With this in mind, I would strongly recommend only using threads on the new Incarnate slots, as shards can appear anywhere. Use shards to build up your alpha, and when you're done with your Very Rare alpha, convert any extra shards to threads.

I'm not a fan of running the same content repeatedly on the same alt (though I have no problem running the same content on a different alt). Having said that, I do quite enjoy the BAF (haven't tried Lambda yet) so I'm not going to complain about the new content. I just think it's going to be a long, long stretch accumulating all the threads I will need despite the higher drop rate in the trials, given that they can only drop in the trials.

Here's hoping for more Incarnate content soon that will also drop threads.

The reward for these special tip missions could be to clear out one of your filled up alignment bubbles to allow you to earn another alignment point within the same 20 hour period. Rescue 5 kittens from trees and you can do another 5 alignment missions, getting to your morality mission quicker.
I don't think that should be an automatic reward or you'll have people log in, run the gauntlet from full villain to full hero (or the reverse) in an afternoon. When the alignment change was still in the design stages, one of the specific design requirements the devs used was that it should be a gradual process. It might have a small (<= 5%) chance, other rewards being a small/medium inspiration, a small bit of inf, a zone-level appropriate enhancement, piece of salvage, etc.

In terms of rewards, I always thought that there should be some tracking (at least for badge purposes) of muggings or vandalism you stop on the streets as well. I have a few alts who often try to save the victims on the street, whether they are in a significantly lower level zone (and get no reward) or a higher level zone (and likely get sent to the hospital). As it is now, most people ignore the street crimes in game as they rush from door mission to door mission. I agree that there should be more heroes fighting gangs on the street, etc. Unfortunately, without adding incentive, even a small one, no one does this.

For existing and potentially new small, zone level activity NPC's on the street can call out specific nearby characters as you run by. Not just in general ("Help! I'm being robbed!") but asking for your help ("Hey Slugbug! This guy's trying to steal my purse!") If you do or don't help them, you might get a flag set on your character, similar to when you complete certain missions, so people talk about you later. "Slugbug got my cat out of a tree. He's awesome!" vs. "Slugbug saw my cat stuck in a tree and totally ignored me. What a jerk!" If NPC's start putting you down everywhere you go, it might influence behavior as well.

    Quote:
I made a suggestion months or maybe even years ago about more zone events. It included robbing a value transport and clearing up a massive traffic accident pileup, among other things. Back then we didn't have zone glowies but now those events would work even better:

A 12 car pileup on the highways in Skyway. Click on cars to release the trapped citizens. Clockwork trying to steal the scrap metal pose a threat. Leaving a car for too long lets the clockwork build more of their kind, spawning more enemies.

An armored transport in Cap Au Diable surrounded by Rippers - clicking it might be difficult with cops shooting at you so get some friends to clear out the guards or keep them taunted long enough for someone to click the transport.

Rescuing a kitten from a tree might earn you a new tip mission automatically from the thankful citizen. Or it could give you an inspiration. Or the nearby citizens could turn into Nemesis Automatons/Rikti Spies/Warwolves and attack the hero who fell into their trap!

The villainous version of rescuing kittens could be to rob a civilian in a dark alley. Sometimes it would trigger an ambush by a random rogue gallery Hero who drops a tip or inspiration when defeated.
All great ideas! I really like the latest version of the Hollows where there are people on the street asking for help in gang infested areas. Some you can lead to the door and be thanked. Some are decoys and trigger an ambush as you approach. This type of tech can be used as well in making zone activity more interesting.

  17. As someone who formerly owned a very low-end system, I would disagree with adding weather effects with just a cosmetic portion if there's even a very small hit to performance. I've played games with weather effects on just-barely-minimum-requirements machines which worked fine with all of the settings turned as low as possible... until it starts raining and the system crashes. While this would not happen on my current machine, I've got a good deal of sympathy for those with lesser boxes.

Ultra-mode is an optional system, rendered client side, that can be completely ignored if you don't like it or don't have the wherewithal to run it. Also, it gave a much needed shot in the arm to an older game with looming competition. Considering as well, within a year of CoH launch I heard the graphics here described as dated. Ultra-mode didn't suddenly turn a 6 year old game into a brand new, cutting edge marvel. It did, however, make the graphics compare well with games made 2-3 years ago as opposed to not comparing well with games made 6-7 years ago.

From an immersion standpoint, the "right" way to do it would be to have winds that effect aim, range, and travel, precipitation and temperature that effect perception, resistances, fire and cold powers, etc. I've seen this done well in a few single-player games, and done badly in several games that attempt it. In a multiplayer game, I can see teams not wanting to take a Fire Scrapper because it's raining, for example. I also have alts already who struggle against enemies with high resistance to my only damage type, if suddenly cold damage is reduced and cold resistance is buffed because of the weather, it could make an already difficult fight even worse. And I'm usually fairly accepting of such changes (compared to many on the forums). The outcry would be deafening.

If it were implemented like Ultra-mode (purely cosmetic and can be turned off) it wouldn't do a lot for immersion for most people. I doubt that the majority of players would enable it to begin with.

I admit it might be nice to have something simple like changing leaves in autumn, bare branches in winter, budding trees in spring, and full trees in summer. I could really get behind some variety in the skies (even just clear/partly cloudy/dark clouds). I could even see snow on the ground in some areas for about three weeks during the winter event, but not for several months on end (there's a reason I moved to Arizona). But if getting even some of these more basic effects takes more than about 40 dev-hours, I think there are better things they could be working on.

  21. Actually, it's exactly 4 days. And 4 is "almost 5."

Still, oddly worded unless it unlocks like EOB 10/6 and goes until morning of 10/11.
  22. Sam,

I do see your point and certainly something could be done to make running less of an issue or at least have more of a point. I've often thought that it would be a nice feature if some maps would occasionally have one minion who would try to run to activate an alarm or auto defense system or something. If an occasional runner would make things more challenging, it would have more of a point than one guy running halfway across the map and then turning around and walking back.

As I said, I seldom have an issue with runners and I do tend to favor melee classes like Scrappers or Brutes so I don't usually have a hold or immobilize. I notice you said you tend to play at -1x3, while I usually play at +0/x2 or +1/x2. I occasionally have one runner, but seldom more than 2 or 3 per mission and they are usually dealt with easily. I never encountered a situation where half of the mobs run in every fight. I believe that lower conning enemies are more likely to run. Maybe this is why you see more mobs running from you. I don't know. If half a group will consistently run at -1/x3, that is certainly something that should be addressed.

My point was, when this reviewer ran into something he liked, he would devote one sentence to it, maybe. When he finds something he doesn't like, he goes on and on about it and ignores the fact that he has a tool to mitigate the exact issue he's complaining about but refuses to use it. He was playing a DP/Devices Blaster and I never saw him use a Devices power. When a player completely ignores their secondary and makes a point of complaining about a problem that their secondary can solve or at least reduce, I find it difficult to take that person's criticisms about any other aspect of the game seriously.

Reminds me of a pick up group a friend and I joined at one point early in the history of the game. The Tank (a brand new player to the game) was complaining about how ineffective his defenses were. About halfway through the mission, we realized that this player was not actually turning on any of his toggles. And yes, we did point out to the new Tanker how to better use his powers and he stopped complaining. If you refuse to use the hammer in your toolbox, don't whine about how difficult it is to drive the nail into the wall.

Maybe, like the new tanker, this reviewer just doesn't understand how to use his powers or what benefits might be derived from a power named Web Grenade. If this is the case, he should seriously reconsider his career choice as I don't think he's cut out for game reviewing.

    Slug.
  23. TL/DR version:
The guy makes some valid points pro and con. He also has some criticisms that are completely invalid or can easily be worked around with a little common sense. And he's irritating to listen to.

    Novel length:
OK, I get that this guy is presenting a new player perspective on the game. No, I don't know how his reaction to this game compares to his other reviews because I didn't care for his presentation style and didn't want to subject myself to more of it. There are some great aspects of the game that he completely missed, but a new player may miss those at first as well. There are a few things that he mentions that I agree with and a few where I don't think he really had a clue.

Right at the beginning, he mentions that starting in the new area is neither hero nor villain but a neutral area. Later he seems to get confused that the "good guys" are asking him to do something that is "bad" and he has a choice to make. Really? And this is a confusing point for you, so must therefore be a flaw in the mission design...

He talks in character creation of spending "several hours" working on his character design but seems to have spent the majority of it clicking the random button and for all of that settles on a knock off of a trademarked character.

As to his making no mention of power customization, admittedly his primary was pistols, so not much to be done there. On the other hand, he did choose a devices secondary (which does have some customization) although I only know this from the slotting screen. I never actually saw him use a secondary power.

Getting into actual gameplay, he begins by saying "The city is massive with three separate parts, and an underground area" and then uses the mission teleporter to go 700 yards. Correctly observing that the power takes such a long time to activate that he could have walked there by then, he seems oblivious to the fact that it wasn't intended to get you to missions that are across the street.

With regard to instanced missions, he says that the problem isn't so much with the fact that almost all missions are instanced as much as the fact that all instances look the same. I will go beyond agreement on saying that instanced missions aren't a problem and say that I actually prefer that. In other games I've played, it's not uncommon (especially shortly after a new content publish with an influx of new/returning players) to find a line formed to wait for your turn at rescuing the hostage or fighting the named boss. Not a problem with instances. I (and many others) would love for there to be more variety in the appearance of instances, but as he also correctly points out most other games have the same problem. A valid complaint but it is a problem with the industry, not just this game.

Potentially very fast, very fun combat, even at low levels. Point in our favor. And that's about as much time as he gives to this aspect.

Every so often you are given a new contact, and you can even call them up instead of having to run across the zone to talk to them after every mission. And that's actually more time than he gives to that point, but I think it deserves more. Being able to call your contact instead of making the trek across the length of the zone to them every 15-20 minutes is one of the major selling points of this game compared with most of the competition as far as I'm concerned.

Couple of valid points: the fact that captives that you observe fighting an opponent stop fighting and become cheerleaders when you come to help them. Either they should help you fight or they should not be shown fighting to begin with. I can buy that as a valid criticism. Also, NPC's get lost easily. Some other games get around this by putting NPC's on rails, so if you come to a fork in the map, the NPC will always go the way they want, and probably die in the next fight if you don't stick with them. I'm not sure which I prefer, but NPC pathing is something that could certainly stand improvement.

Next comes his criticism of fleeing mobs. Personally, I never saw this as the horrible bane of game design that many other players do. It makes sense to me, for example, that a 6' tall minion who is hanging out with three friends would run when an 8' tall hulking, fire covered hero beats the three friends into pulp in under ten seconds and seems to shrug off being shot. I also take issue with his statement "Now, you've seen mobs get low on health and run in other games, but you've never quite seen it like this!" Actually, I've seen it in other games almost exactly like that. Depending on the AI in other games, sometimes he will agro other mobs and come back with reinforcements, other times he just wants to get away from the guy who was beating the crap out of him. What really irritates me about this complaint from this guy is that he has a devices secondary, which means even at level one he has a ranged immobilization power! If runners are so much of a pain, use the power that will stop them from running! There are means to handle runners and it doesn't honestly take a whole lot of thought or skill to use them. Like I said, I never seemed to have too much difficulty with runners and don't see it as a crippling flaw in the game. Mother always said to bear in mind that not everyone is as smart as me, but I really don't think it takes that much to come up with ways to compensate for fleeing mobs. Especially if your tier 1 secondary is a power designed to do exactly that.

Given the amount of time he devoted at the end in complaining about not being able to die from falling damage, I don't think it was clear he was coming back at all. I've started here between Issue 1 and Issue 2 and death from falling was not in the game in all that time. Also in the beginning, he talks about how it's totally foreign to him and he had to figure out the controls, etc before starting. Pretty clear to me that he had no experience with the game going in. Which is fine. Probably even better to get a completely fresh opinion.

Aside from his whiny voice and the fact that he talks way too fast for any kind of informative presentation, he gave that much time to not being able to die by jumping off a building and completely missed or glossed over power customization, being able to call contacts, sidekicking, fast combat, combat using the y-axis and various other features that most of the competition doesn't have or does poorly. This is not a source I would go to in the future for information on any games.

OK, put on your tinfoil hat and consider with me this scenario.

    1. AntiMatter and/or Chimera and/or Neuron DID learn about Rikti dimension.

    2. Praetorians DID go to Riktiland bent on chaos and destruction.

    3. Clues were left behind which led the Rikti not to Praetoria, but to Primal Earth.

    4. It is later discovered that Tyrant's antique, steam-powered, Prussian import toys told them to do it. (Because even in a dimension with no Nemesis, it's all a Nemesis plot!)
