I'll be there of course. I don't know if I'll take part in the costume contest, but I'll be there to burst open Mercy Isl... augh, damn, Atlas Park then. Hrmph.
I was rather shocked, though, when I mentioned this event so some fellow CoH players, and their reaction was "doesn't sound like anything special. I'll pass."
And this was players who are supposedly passionate about the game. Now I'm afraid to mention it to people I know who used to play, back in the day. I can probably expect a "lol, no" at best. Makes me sad. -
Quote:That's actually what I really like about TSW. For a story-driven game, the game doesn't go out of it's way to tell me why I'm doing something (beyond the most general of 'otherwise your boss might detonate the bomb in your spine' motivation). Baring an infamous Dragon faction intro sequence, it doesn't go out of your way to dictate your motives or reactions to anything. This, for me, works because while I'm "forced" to do missions for people, like CoH, I can decide, in the back of my mind, why I'm doing it or what I feel about doing it.Yeah, that part of my problem with it - I just don't like the character I'm asked to play. I didn't like how she looked and I didn't like how she behaved. That's the big problem with "story-driven" games. If I don't like the story, I don't like the game, and the Secret World's story is kind of very specific. City of Heroes was partially story-driven, sure, but I could pick the story. If I didn't like the one I'm offered, I could always pick another. I really don't get why more MMOs don't do that.
In contrast, a game like TOR, with its' fancy dialogue has to force these things. Even if it does give you three options to pick from, you are ultimately playing through a game playing some Bioware writer's character.
And while GW2 isn't particular story focused, it does go out of its' way to explain your motivation. And your motivation is, specifically, "I want to selflessly help others". Which grates on me endlessly.
While I love that TOR dared to tell a good story in an MMO, I think TSW found a better balance between "telling a good (and by definition rail-roaded) story" and "leaving your character's personality for the player to decide." Kinda like old-school CoH missions vs. the fancy new dialogue tree ones that I know you love. -

Quote:I enjoyed CoH yesterday. I'm enjoying it today. And I would like to be able to enjoy it tomorrow.Maybe someone can explain to me what the problem is with paying for and enjoying something for some non-infinite stretch of time, because I'm not seeing a problem there.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying something for a non-infinite stretch of time. There's also nothing wrong with enjoying something for a finite stretch of time and feeling that the end of that time is coming too soon. I'm not done enjoying CoH, and I suspect others feel the same way.
To quote Kirsten Geary, your Illuminati handler in TSW: "It's do or get done. And we're not done." -
Quote:So, you spend half an hour shooting mutated monsters in a subway, and 30 seconds shooting zombies on a forest road, and concluded that the game is about "shooting zombies in forests."Shooting zombies in a forest is about as far as I got into it.
Ahem. Yeah. Okay.
Hating the combat I can at least understand, because that's a matter of taste. But I'm wondering (possibly because I wasn't paying attention) when were you trying it? Just wondering because I absolutely hated the combat when I was trying it in beta weekend 1, but when I managed to work up the will to try it again in beta weekend 4 I absolutely loved it.
I know you like to hate everything Sam, and that's fine. It's one of the things we like about you.
In the end, TSW isn't really about building your own character and your own stories, like most games that aren't CoH. So I wouldn't really expect you to like it. TSW is a heavily story driven game though, that manages to not rail-road you nearly as much as, say, TOR did. Or GW2 is doing.
Mainly by not voicing your character, which is really weird at first, but actually ends up solving most of the issues I have with the TOR (and to some extend GW2) stories. -
So... Which game are you picking up next?

I might give CO another look sometime. Depends on whether I can salvage my old characters without too much headache or not. Sounds like there's been a bunch of changes since I last played with any regularity.

Quote:It's become something of a regular joke among my GW2 guild mates to say something like "Geez, I hope GW2 is still open by the time I get home from work", or "Man, I hope ArenaNet makes it through the weekend".I don't trust NCsoft anymore. I don't trust their bussiness capabilities, and I don't trust that my investment in their products mean anything to them but $$. I don't think they've shown any loyalty to their players, and because of that I won't be buying from them. I mean, how do I know that the GW2 NA servers and resources won't be shut down due to shifting production support to GW2 Korea, and with my luck it'd be a day after I buy a $10 something or two off the market.
It still stings a little bit every time. -
Quote:I don't know, for an "MMO Revolution" it's not that revolutionary. I've seen vastly more original fantasy settings than GW. Of course, being original for the sake of being original isn't necessarily a good thing either. He is wrong though. It's not a "Generic Fantasy Game Trying to Be WoW." So his post was, actually, completely wrong. No wrong in pointing that out.
But exploding on people for having a different opinion than yours is not good form. I tried to interject a little bit of humour in response to that. My mistake. Won't happen again (for all of 10 minutes. Promise). -
I'm subbed to April or something, I think. I'm more curious about unspent paragon points... if those are non-refundable, can we at least get to spend them in the store? I understand the store is currently closed for all purchases. Seems to me they should only block purchasing more points - or, alternatively, refund the point value (personally, I'd rather be able to spend it on stuff
)
-
Or, more likely, an attempt at interjecting a bit of humour into a fairly aggressive post, instead of pointing out that telling something their opinion is, and I quote, "completely wrong", ironically, would be completely wrong.
But hey, I don't get called cute every day. I'll take it. -

Now if only the store wasn't down so I could buy an extra character slot. Or even just a costume slot on an existing character. Oh woe is me!

I'm pretty sure I'm responsible for GDN, ED, the PvP change and NGE.

My moon-based death ray is primed and ready to go. I just need coordinates. Which continent are we aiming at? (it's not really a surgical-strike type of weapon, but I'm sure the message will come across)

I'd pay double, but I'm really stupid with my money.
I think there's two sides to the issue: One is what we are willing to pay to save our game. Another is what prospective new players in the future are willing to play. If CoH was a $30/month subscription game, I really doubt we'd ever see any new revenue. -
Dude,
If you have Praetoria 1-20 on your conscience, I think you can safely tell Melissa that she now has a serious contender for the "favourite Dev" nomination.
Playing through the first twenty levels of Praetoria has been some of the most engaging story telling not only in City of Heroes, but in just about any game I've ever played (and I have to say 'just about' only because of giants such as Planescape: Torment).
If that's not on you... uhm... well, you're still swell! -
Quote:It's not the control schemes (I used the one resembling CoH, anyway) it's more like responsiveness and how your character reacts to input. As I said, it's hard to explain, something just feels 'off'.There's options and control schemes to make the controls closer to CoH's. There's even some guides on the CO's forums detailing how to make the camera operate similar to COH's.
I'm not suggesting it's not working correctly (I wouldn't know), just that something about it rubs me the wrong way. I wish I could be more specific.(this isn't a 'problem' unique to CO, either. Just one example of it.)
-
Hah! The suckers don't even realize we're mortal enemies.
Kidding.
I'm a lifetimer in CO, though I don't really play actively any more. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something awkward about the controls that I never managed to get accustomed to. -
Quote:Nothing wrong with showing up as Illuminati!I'm BelleStarr on Arcadia server. Celestial Lord had trouble friending me for some reason (said that the character showed up as Illuminati, offline, Leviathan) but he did track me down quickly, so.
I am a bit annoyed that I couldn't work out how to put spaces in my nickname, but eh. I am a gun-toting Belle Starr now.
I'll keep an eye out (tee-hee, I almost missed that pun).
