Quote:I agree with this whole heartedly. Took an all human WS to 50 first, then an all human PB. They were both awesome, like nothing I'd ever played before. I sketched out general builds for them in Mid's but threw out the plans probably around level 20. PLAY the character, see what it can do, and what it can't do. Build the character as you go along. I honestly couldn't tell you what powers I took on my PB, what IO's I used, the character just was. If I saw that a certain power was working well, I built it up, powers that I found myself not using went unslotted. Let the character be organic and grow and change. The play-style that works for me, is to mix it all up. Blast at range, Scrap with the 'leakers' that make the mistake up running up to melee with you, Toss out the occasional 'fill-in heal', change ranges and Blast again, and if you see a tasty-looking pile of enemy, dash in and drop a Nuke on them. If you consider the Tankers and Scrappers to be line-of-scrimmage specialists, while the Blasters and Defenders do their thing from the rear-echelon, the human-form PB is the utility mid-fielder who keeps an eye on everything that's happening and fills in the breaks as needed.
My all human PB, to me, played like a blasting scrapper. I usually stayed in the background, blasting away, but woe betide any "leakers" that came my way. I solo'd a bit, probably about 20% of the time, but I'm a teamer at heart so I look for teams no matter which character I'm on but it's not possible to find a team 100% fo the time, especially if you play at odd hours like I do.
My all human PB and WS were some of the best characters that I took to 50. I had a ball playing with them, no grand designs or pre-planned path to 50, just took the powers as they came, some worked, some didn't, but it was all good. I did a respec or 2 on each of them, mostly to upgrade IO's to higher levels as I started IO'ing them out at 30, and probably respecced them around 40-45 to take advantage of higher level IO's. I *did* use Mid's for the respecs to tweak some powers, adjust some slotting, and MOSTLY to keep what was working exactly the same.
Enjoy, and most of all, have fun. -
99% of my characters use, I think, Face 3 because it looks the most African-American, I'll usually add glasses and a moustache. My wife and kids say that my characters look like me, and that's the way that I like it. Most of my characters have masks or helmets, I'm a "power armor" sort of guy, but I still usually go with that face. I don't really think of the ethnicity, just as I don't in real life, but since I'm African-American, and I make all my characters look like me, I guess they're African-American too
I did make one character that I choose a different ethnicity for, "Lyfe Flyte" my emp/emp defender, was of American Indian descent. Used the same facebut no moustache or glasses, and a long ponytail in the back.

I've been using it for a while now, it gets pretty high marks from reviewers, Maximum PC just did a thing on AV programs and it was up there. I've tried AVG, and AntiVir. AVG got too bloated after a while, and I got tired of AntiVir's constant nagging.

I had exactly *1* villian that I started about 2 years ago and he was lvl 30 or so when the announcement came out about lowering the requirements to 20. Purely as a personal decision, I busted my hump to get him to 50 just so that I could say I did it when it was "hard". Heroside it actually tok me about 2 years to get my first 50, more from Alt-ititus than anything else. As someone pointed out earlier, different people have different playstyles, time constraints, desires, etc.
I have no feeling one way or the other about them lowering it to 20, and I'm certainly not going to hate on some new person because the rules have changed. In fact, I'm glad in a way because my second account I only have *1* villian and I made sure that he hit level 20 the day before I17 hit -
Sense of community, I played Anarchy Online for about 6 months before I started CoH in June of '05 and it (A.O.) was a vast wasteland. I could go days without teaming, in the cities there would be lots of people, but no one teamed. First night in CoH, on a 10 day free trial, I was on a team w/i minutes.
They must have known that I was new, they told me where to stand, what to click, etc. I was hooked and got the retail copy and installed it on the last day, and been playing ever since. For me, CoH is my social life...ALL of it. No, I'm not living in my parents basement, I'm married w/ children, but this is my recreation for a few hours a day and as my wife says, "You could be out in the bars, at least this way, I know you're in the next room..."
There are many, many epic moments but 2 that stand out in my mind:
First time soloing and not knowing that you had to click ON the elevator to get to the next floor of the mission...
Finishing the "Cavern of Transcendance" trial with literally seconds to spare. Everyone stood around afterwards, stunned that we had made it, and more than a few of us compared it to an episode (or the movie) of "Mission Impossible"...
Here's to 6 more years of memories and teamage... -

Quote:The first slot is for Arachnos stuff only, get another one at 10, can be anything, same with the rest of the slots. If you take the crab backpack, ALL of your slots will have the backpack no matter what type of costume you setup in those slots. Arachnos (SoA) outfit/gear only available in the first slot.yes, but now they are for lvl 20s, right? I have not had a 50.
edit: right you are i was confusing in the first post
I've only had my Crab for about 2 weeks now, made sure I got a villian up to 50 BEFORE I17, just so that I could say I did it the hard way
I'm pretty sure that's how the costume options for SoA's work. -
Quote:Patching up now, getting some studying in (subnetting - ugh!) while I wait. Just wondering if there's somewhere that lists all the changes in one place? I know there's bits and pieces all over but...Ocho said the down time would be 7am EST-12pm EST we all have a couple hours before it goes live..
For me, I'll be doing the new Posi TF and the new stroy arcs, plus playing my Cold/Ice defender more because of the inherent buff!
Thanks! -
I did the EXACT SAME THING about a week ago. Man I was doing cartwheels until I zoned from Cap to Mercy.
Thought I'd discovered something new that no one else had. Not that the legs bother me, but how cool would it be to have a secret ID with no legs, then do the backflip/puff of light and there they are! -

Quote:I went the single player route to keep from burning out: Mass Effect 1 & 2, Dragon Age Origins, Batman Arkham Asylum, Half-Life Orange Box - al on special from Steam. Keep 'em on hand for when I start to get burned out.Possible point here. I was starting to get burned out on the game pre-i16 and kinda poking around pending some character concepts that I couldn't implement until power customization. I figured rather than make myself sick of the game I'd find an alternative to keep me busy until i16 was released and then I'd be itching to get back into the game. My idea? World of Warcraft. Played it for a week, realized how much better CoX was and came back just in time for i16 with a fresh appreciation for how much I love the game.
I'm not saying go out and start playing WoW, but pick up another MMO or even just a console game for a week or two. There's plenty of free MMO's out there ranging from cartoony to serious. Perfect World, Allods Online, Earth Eternal, Florensia, just pick one, give it a test drive and come back to this game after a bit with a fresh appreciation for it, and maybe even some new ideas.
Another thing is a new AT? Are there any that you haven't tried? I'll be hitting the 5 year mark in June, so I'd tried most of them Hero-side, never really got into the villians. But I finally got one to 50 (my only villian) so now I have the SoA AT and I love it. I made a crab and it brought new life into the game for me. -
But accurate! Heroes, and villians too when you think about it, don't KILL, they knock out. And using Rikti tech, the baddies (or ko'd heroes) are transported to the appropriate facility. Those that rise, I ASSume, have unusually strong constutions, recover quickly and jump back into the fray. Possibly the Rikti tech only works on unconscious parties?

I've added (or tried to) everyone whe posted here. I'm not sure if this is right but I cut and pasted it from the URL bar while looking at my home page:

I'm having the same problem, not trying to threadjack but possibly I could get some help too? CoX is taking 2x as long to even get to the logon screen, I select a character and then wait at the loading screen, last time took 10-15 mins before I was booted back to the logon screen. Whole system drags, but CPU usage is only at 50-60% most of the time.

Guess I'm the only one that doesn't listen to music while playing. Too distracting, I want to hear what's going on in the game, helps me focus on playing. Tried listening to the Cape once, got WAYYY distracted.
I use headphones so as not to disturb the others in the house, maybe I'll give it a shot again, I think the last time I tried it was with speakers. I'm partial to Pandora when I do listen to music online so I'd probably try it with that. -
Quote:Got us beat, we're only 97 combined (52+45). Wife doesn't play but I have 2 accounts. She doesn't mind, says it could be worse, I could be out in the bars, at least this way I'm in the next room and she knows where I'm atCombined age of my wife and myself is 128 we both have 2 accounts altitus at our age is bad ,we enjoy playing CoH and have made some good friends on line also we have a few family members who play.So all you youngsters out there watch out you could be teaming with your granpa or granma
My 12 year old and I play occasionally although most times he wants to solo, I guess to get away from the "Old Man"... -
Quote:Picked it up today, unopened, for the PC, for $4.99.I'm pretty sure you can walk right on by them without incident. I never would, 'cause how much fun would that be; it's just an option.
On a related note, this weekend's Steam deal is Batman: Arkham Asylum for 25 bucks. There's also a pack with B: AA and the first Just Cause for a bit over $22, for those of you that like getting more for less.
My 6 year old grows so fast, and plays so rough with the dog that all his clothes get torn up, so every 6 months or so my wife goes to the Goodwill store, picks him up a big bag of play-clothes for $20-$30 and it lasts him 6 months. We also dropped off 3 bags of stuff that he'd outgrown. School clothes and such we get at Walmart, Sears, etc.
Anyway, she asked me to go with her today and while she was looking at the clothes, I browsed the electronics (sparse), books (old), looked in a locked case they had up front and saw it. Price was $4.99! I couldn't believe it! I've been wanting this since it came out.
Can't beat thai, I might have to start crusing the thrift stores more often. -
Quote:I just did the same thing last night, created an admin account, changed my account to a standard user for security reasons. I've not had any problems, except for having to enter the admin password. I acutally run Splasher/Randomizer so I have to put the password in before that will run, then it launches the updater. Haven't had to download any patches yet, so we'll see what happens when I do.Ok, now I see what you two mean about not being a bug. Still don't agree as I think any application that obviously doesn't do any administrative task shouldn't require administrative access.
And I'm not protecting myself against CoH. As a security software developer I'm always looking for ways to firm up the security of my home computers as well, and the easiest (and actually one of the most reliable) way is to ensure that the logged on account isn't allowed to do anything dangerous to the computer.
And for not running CoH on the admin account, I don't want to enter the admin password all the time.
That aside, I just might move/copy my post to the suggestions forum anyway.
But I definitely understand your reasons for wanting to do this, I'm doing the exact same thing for security reasons. It's not about protecting myself from CoX, it's protecting myself from everything else out there... -

Quote:HA, funny thing: I always "set as waypoint" the tank on teams so I know where to do AOE's, where to go, etc, and when R-click on character to get menu, then L-click to hit waypoint, sometimes I would accidentally click "invite to SG". Whenever I would see the message, "SG invite sent" or "so and so declined your SG invite", I would send a tell apologizing profusely and explain the situation. Most folks just laugh it off, but one teammate was apparently so ticked off, they didn't speak to me for the rest of the misson and left the team shortly after that.I dont mind a blind invite to a team, not a SG however, I usually decline one I didn't ask for. However, instead of blasting the people, on this forum they probably wont ever read, you could just set your status to "not accepting invites" and you won't get any. This is an MMO and it is part of the experience.
Now I just L-click, and hit "W", cuts down on those types of errors... -
My whole reason for playing this game is for the social interactions, so I don't mind how an invite comes. I never start teams though, and the few times I've found myself with the star, I just go through the list, send a tell, or if I see someone in broadcast lft, I'll shoot them a blind invite.
I don't mind them, but like the OP says, "...They're just a bunch of pixels to me...", well the reverse is true for them as well. 99% of people aren't trying to tick people off with the blind invites, and I'd have to say that a good percentage of people in-game are like me, want to team and don't mind an invite whichever way it comes.
And on the rare occasion that I can't team for whatever reason, getting ready to log, buying at WW, etc I always reply by tell and let them know that I'm logging, buying, etc. Common courtesy.
I've never understood some of the rabid responses here about blind invites, it's not like they shot your dog and slapped your mother. As someone else pointed out, it's easy to hide yourself. I've only had one person send me more than one invite after I declined to join their team. After the 3rd one, I stopped clicking no, and moved the prompt to the corner of the screen. Kept more from getting through.
But, yeah I NEVER send blind invites, but I don't mind getting them... -
I think this was the worst (for me) of all the double-XP weekends. Not enough high level teams. My 2 goals were to
1) get my MM to 50 from 43, making him my first red-side 50. I know that soon you'll unlock epic at's at 20 (or something like that) but I want to do it, you know, old school.
2) get any other character in the 40's to 50 and move them off virtue. I'd gotten 7 off the server already during the time that the transfers were free. 4 were already 50, leveld up 3 more. Once they extended it again, I had 2 possibles a eng/eng blaster sitting at 44 and an elec/elec blaster ar 42.
Couldn't find any consistant redside teams, 1-2 mishes, long stretches no teams at all, so I gave up on that, I did get the elec/elec blaster to 50 by sunday night, just before I had to log for bed and got him transfered so I did accomplish 1 of my goals.
I think that the problem was introducing new powersets along with the 2xp, everyone (myself included, for a bit) was pretty focused on playing the new powersets and, I at least, didn't find too many higher level teams playing at all.
I give this 2xp weekend a C- -
Good info, I was a little confused about that myself. I've got mixed feelings, now, about getting into betas. The DP one was my first one, and I got my DP blaster to about lvl 7 before I quit, and never went back. I guess I didn't want to spoil the "freshness" of playing it live, if that makes sense.
I think that I'd LIKE to get into a closed beta, maybe to feel "special", like I earned a reward, but then again, I don't know how far I'd go so as not to spoil things on Live. This one though, I think I'd like to see Ultra Mode, just to get a taste of what's coming. To tell the truth, I can't see much of a difference between the 2 photos that they used to compare Ultra and Standard modes...
