Just came here to report this as well. Noticing that on ALL my characters, custom power colors have reset to default on ALL costume slots except for slot 0. Just asked an in game friend via tell if they saw the same thing and they confirmed that on the character they were currently playing, this was indeed the case.
Betting there is no way to fix this other than by hand on each costume. (Not all my powers are colored the same across all five costume slots on most characters.) Is there any chance that we can get another round of costume tokens though if this turns out to be a universal issue? -

I don't know. Probably going to get a knuckle rapping for saying this, but here goes anyways...
Though I agree that a quick zone search, glance at Atlas or a few anecdotal accounts of a night here or there where few to no invites come in are all inconclusive and relatively poor means of assessing current mean and median server populations--if you really believe that there has been NO noticeable attrition of the active playing population you're just sticking your head in the sand.
We're in our sixth year here. There's a lot more elbow room out there, many more solo SG's and VG's, and it does take a little more legwork and initiative to find or forge teams at many hours of the day. I'm not calling for a server merge. Or saying that the game is on its deathbed. But in the past three months, I've witnessed more than the usual end-of-semester-into-holidays lull that I've seen over past years.
I know the plural of anecdote is not data, but in my experiences, unless it is during peak hours I'm just not seeing anywhere near the population levels in game I saw even a year ago. -
Quote:If you like Nash, you should look up some lesser known but still interesting work with population drift in iterated games of prisoners dilemma. Rick Riolo's work in particular comes to mind. Though his work in no way accounts for internal motivations of these modeled agents, it demonstrates dynamics that support the existence of mixed populations of altruistic agents and selfish agents. Even more interesting are the quasi-cyclical chaotic oscillations in the breakdown of those populations from generation to generation. The patterns his very simple models lead to do appear to echo many real world anecdotes. Neat stuff.Another way of putting it is that Rand doesn't account for Nash. She assumes at all times that enlightened self-interest for a group will always converge on what would be optimal for the individual, and that by extension what is considered optimal for the individual can be extrapolated to what will be optimal for the group. Nash proves you can never take that for granted.
For the internal motivations, you could look perhaps to primatologists like Franz DeWaal and his peers. Interesting research there though some of his popular science survey books tend to paint with the broader strokes of a poet rather than a scientist.
Anyways, it's the collective of stuff like this that I've encountered over the years as well as my own internal life experiences that ultimately blows Rand out of the water. Though others' obviously get a lot out of her work, I think she misses the mark in terms of effectively and fully describing the human experience and our tendencies. And here I find myself at a similar place as Castle. To me, the humanity she describes so often sounds more like the clinical description of sociopathic personality disorders than a broad philosophy of man. -
Just shoveled the stoop and walk here. Not that deep yet, maybe two inches at best. Really pretty here in the city currently. About to go for a walk just to see the neighborhood under the blanket.

Taking a random shot in the dark, /stuck might fix whatever problem you're having. Except if your hair is on fire. /stuck will just teleport you along with your burning hair a few feet over in space. In that case I recommend a bucket of sand or water. Water is preferable. But dangerous if it's a grease fire. So in the case that your hair is covered in burning grease, you should smother the flame with generous fists full of sand. Waiting for a response to a /petition might take a bit longer than you have considering the dire grease fire on your scalp you are now experiencing.
Hope this helps! -
Quote:All for a beastly feral run power, even if it seems entirely redundant with the natural booster's ninja run.this thread has so been overplayed out, this thread is about mutants. PLEASE no more "what makes a character origin x or not" stuff. we all have diff opinions on what a origin is classified. we get that but can we please stick to mutation discussion at least?
I have been looking forward to the mutant booster for a long time and would really love it if we can talk seriously about what we would like as we CAN have an impact on the dev's line of thinking. -
They're no calling for 10-15 in NYC. That's pretty significant here. The city is a heat island and that much in one sitting is pretty rare.

Quote:That's a good name."Quantum Butterfly" a grav/storm troller, for example... the only reason that character exists is because of the name and concept behind it.
And I hope I didn't sound too dismissive of your helpful suggestion. I can tell from the activity on the name thread that it's quite useful to others and I appreciate the suggestion. -
Quote:I've seen that and browsed it, but it's frankly a bit too tumbling like a multipaged run-on-sentence to be of much use to me. Were I rolling new alts, I might get much more use out of it. But at this point, my older characters are as much their names as they are their costumes and powers. The Virtue forum has a great name thread stickied at the top by the way. If you need to come up with new names for characters transferring to Virtue, there are people there who can help immensely.
So as much as I hate to, I'll likely go with appended versions of their original names with a period or underscore or losing a space in some of the two word names. I've already been told quite curtly during one application "interview" with an SG that "we look down upon names with that sort of treatment, if you can't get an unadulterated version of the name go find a new one." Again, applied to new alts, I agree. But the remark came across as having zero sensitivity to what it might actually feel like to be considering such a move this late in one's history with a game. Felt like salt in the wound.
These characters are private five year legacies. A week ago, another player recounted being mugged then using CoH as an escape while cooling down from that crappy experience. In similar ways over the years, these characters in my game and in my head have been there when I needed them. I suppose I'm a bit like an author in the degree of connection I feel to them. And as I said, to me they are their names and their names are them. Compromising with an appended tail on the original name feels less heartbreaking than totally retconning the character into oblivion because the unadulterated version of the name is unavailable. This is of course my very personal take. And others' mileage may vary.
I'm sure this sounds all too emo to a few folks out there. But I'm just being honest with myself. And what I'm about to write may not be understood by everyone reading, but I'm sure a few out there get me here: Somewhere deep in me I'm kind of aware that if I botch how I handle this server jump, it will probably sever my deep sense of attachment to CoH that keeps me here.
I've known other folks, both in this game and others, who've reached states of being ready to leave game. To seal the deal, they'd delete their mains. Invariably, that seems to do the trick. I've no desire to inadvertently do the same to myself via a mass server transfer here. But I can't help but feel that risk. This game is old and my time with it has been long. There are other options out there and this may or may not be what pushes me to move on once and for all. Strange but true. -
Quote:Prices got really wonky this holiday season. I'm hoping things make a bit more sense in the wake of the holiday season. But as it stands, even now those 5750's and 5770's are pretty affordable. But availability is currently spotty an all the ATI 5xxx's. Since I plan on giving some of the upcoming DX11 games a go, that hardware tessellation is pretty key IMO. AvP 2010 I'm looking at you, buddy!Am looking at buying an HP Pavilion p6280t customizable Desktop PC;
# Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q8300 [2.5GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB]
# 6GB DDR2-800MHz SDRAM [3 DIMMs]
# FREE UPGRADE! 640GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 500GB
# Integrated graphics (Intel(R) Media Accelerator 3100) [VGA]
Then, I wanted to buy a card separately, and to be honest, my head is spinning over Tom's hardware reviews and others I've read. From reading all of the posts here, I'm settled on going with ATI/AMD graphic card, but just not sure which one and more importantly, could my new box handle a crossfire configuration if necessary?
Also, I don't want to go broke, and was looking at the 4000 series from ATI, but now the 5000 series is out (lol like a previous post said, there's always something new), and just wanted to be sure that the card I buy will allow me to play Aion, and Coh GR (my current PC is 6 years old..got it when I first got CoX!).
Any help is greatly appreciated! -
I've changed my current tune and am actively looking for a fitting home on Virtue. But not having any great luck this far. In many ways Triumph (my first home) is still awesome, but playing in-character is pretty key to my deeper enjoyment of this game. And that is becoming harder and harder to come by on Tri in either structured or chance encounters.
So I'm seriously considering a big full move to Virtue. I'm trying to avoid starting over entirely, new characters and all, because at this point that will likely just drive me away from the game. This game still retains many exemplary qualities in my opinion, but the sense of freshness required for a total reboot on my part just isn't there.
But I have found what looks like will be a good home for four theme specific heroes going from Protector to Virtue. And I've several reasons to be optimistic on that front.
Admittedly, this whole process has been much more of an emotional roller coaster than I anticipated. I'm not sure which stings most: the prospect of losing four names (already checked on these), losing the SG base prestige or losing that old mostly inactive SG roster whose long list of names evoke so many memories. Before considering a jump, I don't think I was aware how deeply connected to my characters and sentimental I have become regarding some of my experiences over the years. Strange, huh? -
Quote:Definitely a good solution to the logistic issues that the DA faced. Funnel all interested parties from either side into a single instance.Yeah the first one I was on, I noticed that even though we were villains, there was a tank and several others. I didn't realize the bit with the countdown, that makes sense that if another group pings it within that time frame, they'll all be joined up.
And since most of my characters have the coop zone dialogue box on perma-hide, it took me a while as well to notice this. -
Quote:Thanks for responding. They're all regular, non-static SGs with plenty of activity. More at peak hours, obviously, but there's almost always a team's worth of folks on at bare minimum, unless you're on at *really* odd times, like 3am in the states. They all have some form of application/interview process, mostly just to make sure you fit the theme, and you're not trying to get someone like Lobo or the Punisher into the SG.
And I saw that about the applications on a couple of the sites.
Most of my characters are bright and sunny and solidly in the SA or maybe late GA heroic tradition. But I have one currently named Ashen Princess, who's costumes look a bit like early takes on the Scarlet Witch plus flaming eyes. She's half daemon, works days as Lawyer specializing in Transdimensional Immigration and Existential Law. I know there are tons of daemon type groups out there, but IMO she's an SA take on this stereotype of a cold human struggling with a wicked half. Her character gets a boost from being cast as a troubled entry in the classic spandex setting. But she is by no means and has never been played as a murderous diamond age character. In your personal estimation, is there room within any of these groups for that sort of character? I'd just hate to move her, give up the name and end up being told, "No. Demon freaks play over there, lady."
Of my "original 7"--all created in the first three months CoH went live--I'll be losing 4 names. (Surprised that I'd actually keep 3 even though.) At the moment that's actually my biggest concern: jumping, surrendering names and then not finding a fitting home. 1 of the 4 I'll lose could be renamed quite easily. But Ashen Princess, Amethyst Avenger and Subatomic are all gonna sting mighty awful to let go. Those names have been pretty integral to my CoH experience for 5 years now.But as it stands, I really do miss playing on teams that play in character. Just not easy to find on Triumph any more. Some good folks there but not much RP these days.

Quote:Heh. Cute. I see what you did there. My advice, don't do it.
Started off similiar for me too. I mostly played on Infinity, but had a few characters on Virtue since a few friends played here. Then I started spending more time around the good people of Virtue, learning thier ways. I spent hours on costumes, character concepts, backstories, and even dabbled in RP. No big deal, right? That's what they all say...
Pretty soon you're hooked. You could play on other servers, but let's face it, they're just not virtue.
Quote:There's plenty of classic superheroes running around. You might run into some of them at the D, but a lot of the RP that doesn't involve waking up with hazy and vaguely shameful memories of what happened with that catgirl last night happens in RP SGs.
/shameless plug
If you're looking for a possible home for your tights-and-justice types, might I recommend one of these fine groups?
Golden Age Heroes
All Star Teen Sentinels
United Sentinels of America
Guardians of the Golden Age
/end shameless plug)? Are these static teams (which I don't mesh well with due to a shifting schedule) or more of an open set up with rolling SG pick ups?
As far as the going to pocket D, don't worry, you won't find me doing the logout of shame. I was going there more because it is the holidays and we've got coop missions of all levels. But like I said, rather than the catgirls, my big problem is I let my characters write themselves and my villains all have antisocial streaks and are starkly different from the heroes I'd consider transferring.
Also, another ping to any members of S.C.O.R.P.I.O. reading. Are you guys still out there and active? I've got 4 all natural super spies I might be moving.
And in addition to the silver age and super spies, I have a couple pulp era heroes, so if anyone reading has some right retro rocketeering RP going on, please speak up. May be looking for a home for them too. -
Quote:Searching level range by level range is often more telling, as it shows folks who are in unique event based zones as well as on mission maps or SG bases. As long as they are not hidden from searches.42 people found in LFT server wide, just me and 1 other player were in Peregrine.. I thought it was a mistake so I searched zone by zone, 6 Atlus, same for Kings, Steel had the most at 9. Pocket D even had less than 6. Pocket D on the second day of the chalet opening. Not a meaningless observation at all, and I'm sure that the Devs ARE aware of Triumphs population.
And then you always need to check to make sure you didn't get a search truncation message in your search.
Not saying Triumph wasn't relatively empty or not when you did your search, just saying that there are better methods with the tools we currently have for getting an estimate of current server population than doing open zone searches. -
For now, I've decided to take a villain or two to Pocket D just to socialize a little. Unfortunately, my villains are all maladjusted in one direction or another while my heroes, though each uniquely flawed, tend to be much more social. So I may ultimately bring one of my "friendlies" over.
Just still curious if and where the other silver age folks might be hangin'. -
I thought he was actually trying to demonstrate your last point rather than further the direct discussion of natural vs. tech origins. Anyways, his list of alternative explanations inspired me just to throw out my own random idea as it came to me half-formed.
-
Quote:What about a sentient assault rifle that you have some sort of spirit connection with? At least on paper, that sounds pretty cool to me...Even with that distinction I think you're limiting yourself. While Assault Rifle is mostly used by Tech/Natural characters it can just as easily be applied to other origins.
A Magic origin character might use enchanted bullets, in that case the magic is doing the heavy lifting the rifle is just the delivery system.
A Mutant origin character might have superhuman aim and reflexes allowing him to get significantly more out of a normal assault rifle than a standard human would.
(These two could easily be switched with a mutant who empowers his bullets like Gambit or a magic user who uses magic to guide his shots)
A Science character would use some combination of the above depending on the exact nature of the experiment that empowered him (Science is the origin I always have the most trouble with, most of my attempts end up as mutants or tech). -
So I've got a bunch of redsiders already here on Virtue. But my first and second homes were on Triumph and Protector. The prior home of my classic silver age characters and the latter my home for superspies and Victorian pulp themesters.
I RP. I don't consider myself hardcore. But others sometimes call me out as such because I tend to get deep into character. I RP contextually, as I play the game, but don't really engage in story driven RP sessions or forum RP (either here or on dedicated forums). I guess I just prefer improv over script. Oh, and though I get a kick out of in-character flirtations and quips, ERP is a no starter for me at this stage in my life.
I also badge (chronically?), sometimes turn XP off for arcs or merits or just to fill a few contacts JUST because, am not entirely focused on getting every character to 50, concept build and don't take stamina on about 40%-50% of my characters, though I still do enjoy the challenge of an occasional speed TF run (which I do stay in character through because I just do). IRL, I'm in my mid 30's (don't say late. not yet) and due to professional and other responsibilities have a highly variable play schedule from hardly at all on some weeks to indulgent midday binges to the occasional "on every night from 7-10pm est week."
Aside from S.C.O.R.P.I.O. as a potential new home for my C.O.V.E.R.T. superspy agents (S.C.O.R.P.I.O. is still active, yes?), are there any fairly active and well populated silver age blueside SGs? I really want to feel this out before sacrificing several bases and SGs worth many millions of prestige each not to mention hours spent laboring on those, including one with a neat bug that has us in possession of three or four redside zone beacon badges (though we could never place the beacons). Likewise, I realize I may be losing the names for some of my nearest dearest and oldest characters. But most of my longtime RP mates from the small pockets of good RP I knew have left game over the years. A few have moved servers as their rosters filled and interests migrated. So I'm really missing out on the social aspect of this game currently as I tend to enjoy it.
In summary, heroic citizens of Virtue, what say you? Might I find what I'm looking for here? Would a transfer be worth giving up what I would on my other servers? -
-
A part of me is tempted to buy some slots on virtue and consolidate for population and being around moar RP as many of my RP mates elsewhere have moved to other games. But... bases and super groups keep me from making the move. And I already payed for a few renames a few years back. Soooooo... I won't be doing much with this gift. But it is cool to see others getting something out of it!

No thank you! I play this game to get away from RL!

Quote:You're kidding, right? We have no prerogative that they respond to this question. And anyways, isn't it obvious? So much in the game from SG bases to instance maps is comprised of modular components and repurposed and reskinned assets. Heck, take a good look at how boulders and rocky outcroppings inside cave maps are placed. Compare this to how often even now with a larger staff that we actually get original art for any release, from costume pieces to power animations to tile sets.Does anyone know how I could get a developer response on this? I'm really curious as to why they've designed the map like this.
Original art elements require many more hours to produce and require much more experienced/skilled/talented labor. This has always been the case and is not isolated to just digital media. All this translates into $$$, budgets and deadlines. Arranging and essentially "decorating" maps with pre-made, pre-approved elements from a set of items can be done much more quickly by a larger number of workers from interns to folks crossing boundaries from other departments. i.e. (and this is only a hypothetical pulled out of my hat) even though War Witch MOSTLY does copy and zone spawn stuff (IIRC), I could see her quickly getting up to speed on a proprietary map editing/decorating tool set and filling in in a pinch. But could she transition even half as quickly into a full fledged digital sculptor creating entirely original maps readily and efficiently while staying within the boundaries of already established art direction? Unlikely. (And that is no jab at her or any other developer. Just trying to underscore the reality that it takes time to become fully adept in the basic skills of a profession and even longer to gain the myriad experiences that makes one a highly flexible and efficient expert. She, like much of the dev team, have spent their years doing things OTHER THAN 3d modeling or directly related trades.)
I dunno about your work experiences, but every sort of production team workflow I've ever worked in has to cut corners somewhere to meet deadlines and budgets. In so many production settings, volume, time and consistency sit at odds with excellence. Compromises get made. It's pretty much a no brainer as to why these maps are the way they are. Without huge, massive, expensive production teams (which only HUGE developers seem to be able to afford--such as Blizzard or Rockstar--how 'bout that Red Dead Redemption title, hey?), the only way we'll see totally original artwork in large vast virtual worlds is with further advancements in procedural generation tools (either on the fly in game or more likely as proprietary development software) that saves time, limits the need for corrections (including removing redundant architecture) and then allows the limited number of artists on the production to focus on refinement, exceptions and hand touches.
