I first learned of CoHF in June 2011. The decision to go F2P was probably made about two minutes before. That would put the NCSoft ultimatum about ten minutes before *that*. I don't have any hard data, but that's just what seems most likely.

Also in that presentation, note that "Who will die?" is not just a tagline, but the actual name of the first 7-part-long storyline.

Oh, crud. Okay, so one or two shots of 1200 points will put me at VIP Tier 9.
  4. Okay, so... I celebrated my sixth anniversary in game this June, never lapsed (well, no more than three days)... 13 tokens per year for six years is 78 tokens, plus 4-5 by the time Freedom launches... and it looks like I have to spend 33 tokens to get at the Tier 9 stuff... So I can get Celestial stuff on Day 1 without buying any Paragon Points? Someone correct me if I'm missing something.

For years now I've been trying to get people to comment on them, but because they're all tl;dr, I simply can't, beyond the very simplistic "It's nice." or "I didn't like it." Occasionally, through begging and coercion, I'll get a person to comment in multiple sentences, and what I get most of the time is a short, polite "I liked it, I thought it was nice. You're pretty good at this." comment.

Obviously, the positives and negatives of any feedback are something that needs to be balanced, but I find empty praise to be just as useless and unconstructive as trolling, to put it bluntly.
Well, yes, obviously non-specific feedback is going to be pretty useless. "I liked it, I thought it was nice, you're pretty good at this" is just as useless as "I hated it, it sucks, you're terrible at this". The first one makes you feel a bit better, the second one makes you feel a bit worse, but they're both equally non-issues for the quality of your writing.

But conversely, specific feedback is always useful - whether positive or negative. "When you introduce the ruthless Emperor 'skipping along the flowerbeds' it doesn't really build the air of menace you seem to be going for" is good feedback, as is "great idea with having the brother always saying 'poodle skirt', it really takes on a whole different meaning on a re-read, especially in light of what happens at the variety show".

I watch Zero Punctuation and I've seen most of MST3K. I know the entertainment value in ripping into bad stuff. But as noted, that doesn't apply here - neither you nor Johnny find this game to be so laughably bad the only possible entertainment value it has is in taking apart its every mistake.

And it IS a one-sided argument, because no-one ever remembers the time I've praised the game, or indeed the time Johnny has, because apparently that just doesn't stick with people, much in the same way people don't notice when they're content. They only ever remember when I complain, because that's when it bugs them.
Your first response to "but you complain all the time!" wasn't "no I don't, I'm positive plenty of times." It was "well positive things are not really worth talking about, are they".

The part that's not fun is when someone logs in and immediately you have to put aside whatever you are doing in order to let this person play out his story, regardless of your own. I never was able to develop the original story of the Arachnos Commander because, being the leader of the group, I had to sit (for hours and hours) helping others develop theirs.

I've yet to run into players that don't want to be the "end all or end alls."
You ran into some bad RPers. Good RPers treat RP as a collaborative story, not a showcase for their own characters.

Hey, talking during the movie is annoying. But that's not what I meant - I was talking of the situation where you're all sitting in the diner having a snack after the movie and everyone's sharing their favourite parts (you know, when the the guy was all WOOSH! on the bike and the other guy was like GRR and seal was all BARK BARK BARK) and there's one guy just pointing out the flaws. And eventually someone turns to the guy and asks, "so you didn't like it?" and the guy shrugs and goes "well, everything else was okay, so I won't mention it".

And the stuff worth discussing most is the stuff that's a problem, so that we can come up with solutions or workarounds, or possibly explain the problem away and see it as a positive. There are few things more boring than a "discussion" where everyone pats each other on the back, going "That's good." "Ayup, that's good!" "Did I tell you guys that this is good?" Making an evolving game is a never-ending process.

The forums are a place for discussion, but not all discussion has to be endless praise. The forums are also our primary means of getting feedback to the devs. No negative feedback is good feedback; they don't need to be told when people are happy about something as much as when people are upset because the former doesn't require action to be taken but the latter might. As the adage goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. And if someone doesn't like seeing complaints, simply don't read them.
The forums may be a feedback tool, but the forums are also a community. You don't use your phone only to call the cable company when your cable breaks, you use it to call friends for a chat too. Or, well, maybe you don't. Maybe your phone is, to you, strictly a means of placing complaints when something doesn't work. And ordering pizza.

Maybe you guys don't see the point of talking about something you like with other people who like the same thing... that's okay, there's nothing wrong with that, but you do come across as somewhat grumpy, just like that guy who never talks about the parts of movies he likes.

You don't call your cable company just to tell them they're great and things are working; you call them when the cable goes out.
The forums aren't a problem hotline, though, they're a place to discuss the game in general. It's more like you're being that one guy who, whenever the gang gets together to watch a movie, only ever points out the parts that are implausible or badly acted or terribly CG'd.

Six months' worth of stipend and patiently wait for Paragon Points to build up is like asking me to suspend my subscription for a few months so that I can build up money for the next expansion. I believe City of Villains sold for $40, so that applies.

The point is that there is a crapton of stuff we could be using our Paragon Points on, and new powersets are just one of these. If it were JUST powersets, then sure, I can wait, but it's not JUST that. VIPs will be paying regardless of whether they get powersets or not, because those enhancement unslotters, respec recipes and Invention's boosters don't come for free and they aren't reusable.
So basically, instead of everyone getting the same stuff free with their subscription, each person is allowed to pick which stuff they want. You like powersets but don't care for costumes? Your subscription now comes with lots of free powersets, but costumes are extra. You like costumes? Your subscription comes with free costumes and extra costume slots, but you have to pay for powersets.

You want PS to hire a bunch of new people and work double-time to bring you *all of the things*? You'd even be willing to pay more money per month if if meant you get all the stuff you want? Well, guess what, now that's an option, and without having to raise the subscription price for everyone else!

Edit: And even better, instead of making a decision once and then possibly regretting it, you can see what comes out and then decide what will come free with your sub. How's that for freedom of choice?

If you buy 1200 points for $15, then spend 800 point on a powerset, the monetary value of that powerset is $10.

If I buy, say, 6000 points at a discount price of $40 (DISCLAIMER: I have no way of knowing if this is a real thing the store will offer), then spend 800 on a powerset, the monetary value of that powerset is $5.34.

A-ha. I see what you're doing. You're trying to ferret out who's in the CB (by the fact they post here in this thread but don't send you Inf). I refuse to play your little game.
  19. I'm staying on VIP because I enjoy having full access to all the features and 12 slots per server to use as I see fit.

I may start a new Free account just to see how the experience feels like for an all-new player (and possibly make really stupid RP characters* without fear of getting my main account Ignored by everyone).

Yeah. It'll be super extra tragic because oooh, they just had a wedding last year. Really *hoping* it doesn't go this way, because it would be terrible, but cynically I can't help but expect it.
  21. 50s with Incarnate unlocks at this time:

    Silver Gale (+3) - A-4, J-4, I-3, L-3, D-4
    Mecha Mistress (+2) - A-3, J-2, L-3
    Heal People Lass (+1) - A-3, J-1, I-1
    Actuary Winternight (+1) - A-3
    Meagen Sureshot - A-2
    Lady Lionel - A-0

Plus two more 50s not Incarnated.

The iXP change has slowed down my unlocks on characters that need them, so I'm mostly running Trials on my Main for Merits and components.

Is nothing outside the realms of being waved at us with "Oh, but you'll need extra for this, hope you can decide what to pick!" Expect marketing heavy drives and 'sales' down this path.

    2. EVERYTHING will be in the store, and the Paid subscribers can pick what they want off the menu, up to their allowance, plus whatever extra they want to spend. Problem with this assumption is that there's no way they'd do this and give the Paid subscribers enough allowance to get all the desirable stuff. Expect them to "coerce" as much money out as possible down this path.
Or how about 3. EVERYTHING is in the store, and Premium players can buy whatever they like, but VIPs get access to a large part of it automatically as long as they're subscribed? Y'know, like Inventions are "Purchasable" for Free Players and "Included" for VIPs, or Time Manipulation is "Free for VIP players, or you can buy this from the Paragon Market"?

Let's now confuse "X will be available in the store" and "X will only be available if you spend Paragon Points, even if you're VIP".

Well, you can use the idle time to do RP scenes to flesh out the transition (since the Tips themselves mostly make your character go "you know, having lots of money is more important than kicking puppies. ... actually, petting puppies is even better than having lots of money"). Or you could play your other characters. Or you could use the time to pursue any other hobbies you have, like I dunno, pulling a random example from the air here, writing some really awesome fanfic?
