    The Expendables

Finally got to see this Friday. I must say I kinda enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I pretty much had somewhat low expectations coming in. And even though it technically wasn't a good film, there was still some fun action-packed enjoyment to be had. But that's about it though.

Here's my full review and final score of The Expendables at Shadowrush.com
  2. That actually got me confused as well. But yes, it does seem to indicate that Alex will be the older brother in this movie (much like in the Ultimate universe).

One other minor thing I've been noticing.... the spelling of the name. In the comics it seems to be spelled Havok. But all the articles I've seen about the movie that mentions his name all spell it as Havoc (which is why I spelled it that way in my article). I wonder if it's just a misspelling that reporters are writing... or is that really how it will be intentionally spelled in the movie credits?

Still... though, maybe I better spell it Havok. ^_^; Updating post.

Thanks to a phone interview by AICN with Bryan Singer about Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, new information about the movie have been revealed. One of which is the time period, the film will be set in the 1960′s. Checkout the quote from the report below:

    Quote:
First off – the film takes place in the 1960′s. John F Kennedy is the President of the United States. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are on TV doing marches. There is a spirit of a hopeful future that was prevalent in that time. We will see how Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr met – and how they dreamt of a future with Mutant & Human kind. They’re going to be in their late twenties. Xavier – as played by James McAvoy will not be in his wheelchair to begin the film – but we will see how he wound up in a wheelchair. I asked if McAvoy would have a nice shiny chrome dome – and folks. We’re going to see Professor X when he still had hair. We’ll see McAvoy and Fassbender’s Magneto formulate what it is they are attempting by creating the X-MEN.
Bryan Singer mentions that it will not be the conventional First Class comic and will be more of a new beginning specific to the movie franchise. Being set in the 60′s, it will have James Bond-style tech, and the costumes will be more comic bookish than previous films.

Scott Summers and Jean Grey won’t be in the film, but Scott’s brother Alex (Havok) will be there (played by Lucas Till). Emma Frost (January Jones), Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and the Hellfire Club will also appear. The film will have a more international feel and will be set in various locations including England, the US, Russia (USSR) and more.

X-Men: First Class will start filming on August 31, 2010 and will release on June 3, 2011. It’s produced by Bryan Singer and directed by Matthew Vaughn. To see more of the cast for this film, checkout our previous article.
Here's the link to the Shadowrush.com article

I actually like this idea. Having it set in the 60's allows for some retro tech and more comic book style costumes. And there's the Hellfire Club, which works great for a 60's setting. Looking forward to this.

Paramount have signed on the writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to pen the next film installment of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, reports Deadline. The film is planned to be a live-action reboot of the franchise and will be produced by Platinum Dunes (the company of Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller).

Paramount and Nickelodeon acquired the global intellectual property rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60 million. With this reboot, they’re planning to develop the property into the next big franchise. Aside from the movie, a television series is also in the works.

Marcum and Holloway shared the credit in writing Marvel’s Iron Man movie, as well as Punisher: War Zone. They’ve also just wrote the script for the planned Highlander reboot for Summit Entertainment.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a gritty and dark comic book. This then spawned a kid-friendly cartoon series, films, a TV show, toys, more comics, video games and recently, a CG film. Laird has said the plan is to make this reboot closer to the comic book source, the original noir-like, gritty comic book series. One of the possibilities is to develop it in a “Batman Begins-style” origin story.

Paramount is fast-tracking and wants a first draft of the script by October, and if all goes well, they are hoping for a 2012 release.
Here's the link to the Shadowrush.com article

I'm kind of excited about this. Ever since last year, when I heard they were going for a reboot closer to the original comics, I've been hoping that it will end up as something good and maybe even awesome. Hopefully Marcum and Holloway will do well in penning the script.

Summit Entertainment has released the trailer for director Doug Liman’s “Fair Game”. See the trailer above (via Yahoo Movies). The film is a fact-based suspense drama based on the events that happened to real-life CIA agent Valerie Plame, which made news headlines a few years ago. Checkout the synopsis below:

    Quote:
A suspense-filled glimpse into the dark corridors of political power, FAIR GAME is a riveting action-thriller based on the autobiography of real-life undercover CIA operative VALERIE PLAME (Naomi Watts), whose career was destroyed and marriage strained to its limits when her covert identity was exposed by a politically motivated press leak. As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie’s husband, diplomat JOE WILSON (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from *****. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and ignites a firestorm of controversy.
The film stars Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich, Liraz Charchi and Nicholas Sadler. It’s directed by Doug Liman and opens on November 5, 2010.

To be honest, being the somewhat game/movies focused geek that I am... I actually didn't know this happened. But I'll check it out. >_>

Darren Lynn Bousman is planning to direct a horror thriller titled “11 11 11″, and has partnered with producer Wayne Rice, reports Heat Vision. Appropriately, the film is planned to release on November 11, 2011 (11/11/11).

The movie is based on the 11:11 movement or phenomenon, where people believe that the number 11 alerts them to spirits or angels. It also includes conspiracy theories on the involvement of the number to historical events.

Rice talks about how he chose Bousman for this project. “He and I sat down and over some pasta, (and) the movie materialized,” Rice said. “A lot of this has been New Age-y or biblical, with talk of angels. Leave it to Darren to see the dark side of that date.”

Bousman is currently writing “11 11 11″ as well, and will be about the 11 gates of Heaven and how on 11:11 on the 11th day of the 11th month, the final gate will open and “something from another world will enter the earthly realm for 49 minutes.”

Bousman had previously directed three money-making “Saw” films and “Repo: The Genetic Opera”. But the intent for “11 11 11″, is not to make it a gory film like “Saw”, but instead to take a new route to scare people.

“With ‘Saw’ and ‘Repo,’ my career has been about finding new ways to freak people out; that’s what I want to do with this,” Bousman said. ‘We want to take this phenomenon and give it horrific purpose.”

The pair hope to be in production this fall.

This looks interesting. Hopefully it will be better than the previous number-focused "Number 23" Jim Carrey movie. I've never wrote this many 11's in an article before.

The trailer for director Brad Anderson’s next film, “Vanishing on 7th Street” hits the web. It’s a horror/suspense film starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo.

The film is about a small group of people, who one day, woke up and found that everyone else in the city they live in mysteriously vanished. Each passing day lessens the daylight hours. They seek refuge in an old bar to protect themselves from what seems like a strange darkness slowly covering the city.

The film will be coming soon to theaters and will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
It looks very interesting and intriguing. It makes me think that there's something more to this darkness than what the trailer has shown.
  9. Here's the link where I posted the trailer at Shadowrush.com

    Here's a synopsis:
    Quote:
In the sleepy town of Riverton, legend tells of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead? Only one of the kids knows the answer. Adam “Bug” Heller was supposed to die on the bloody night his father went insane. Unaware of his dad’s terrifying crimes, he has been plagued by nightmares since he was a baby. But if Bug hopes to save his friends from the monster that’s returned, he must face an evil that won’t rest… until it finishes the job it began the day he was born.
To be honest I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It kind of looks like some other movies I've seen before. But I may give it a shot if there's nothing else in the theatres during that week. Or maybe give it a rent.

Magnolia Pictures/Magnet have released the second trailer for the much-anticipated indie sci-fi film, Monsters (embedded below this article). Written and directed by Gareth Edwards, it’s been reported that the movie was done with only less than $100,000. The film, about two people trying trying to cross an alien-infected zone, is as much as a character piece as it is a sci-fi adventure and has already been getting great early buzz. Here’s the synopsis (via SlashFilm):
    Quote:
Written & directed by Gareth Edwards

Starring Scoot McNairy (“In Search Of A Midnight Kiss”) and Whitney Able (“All The Boys Love Mandy Lane”)

The breakout hit of this years SXSW, Gareth Edwards’ groundbreaking new film is as much a poignant contemporary romance as it is an epic science fiction adventure. Shot with just a five person crew and a cast of two, Gareth Edwards’ team traveled through Guatemala, Belize and Mexico, finding and utilizing their locations and supporting actors as they went. The result is a film as cutting edge as it is classically composed, as emotionally satisfying as it is visually stunning, and the bold announcement of a major new talent.

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and grow. In an effort to stem the destruction that resulted, half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain the massive creatures… Our story begins when a jaded US journalist (McNairy) begrudgingly agrees to find his bosses daughter, a shaken American tourist (Able) and escort her through the infected zone to the safety of the US border.
The film is will be available On Demand on September 24, 2010, and will be relased on select theatres on October 29, 2010.

I think they're cheering, because for the first time they see Luke Skywalker finishing his lightsaber and then testing it. It's always been alluded that (like all Jedi), Luke made his own lightsaber. And this clip finally shows an actual scene of it. So it's pretty important to hardcore Star Wars fans I think, which is why they cheered.

    Hehe. Well look at it this way, it's just one of the deleted scenes. They mentioned that the set will have more. Of course, I have no idea if they'll be as cool as the one they showed. ^_^;
  13. As some of you know, George Lucas announced that Star Wars is coming to Blu-Ray during the festivities at Star Wars Celebration V. And that, a sneak peek at a short but special deleted scene was shown. The video of the deleted scene taken during the event has hit the web.

I've embedded it in my article at Shadowrush.com

Personally, I think it's pretty cool.
  14. I saw this movie on Friday and I liked it. It wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it very much. I just finished writing my full review on it. Here's my review of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on Shadowrush.com
  15. I've updated the post. It seems a property battle has ensued because of the announcement yesterday by Hannover.

    EDIT: Oh, looks like UtraTroll beat me to the update. ^_^;

According to producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy from Star Trek) will be playing Judge Dredd, reports Empire Online. There was a rumour about it from Comic-Con, but an answer from Karl Urban in a 3news article last month comfirmed it. The producers’ answers during a Q&A at Movie-Con III have also reaffirmed the casting choice.

MacDonald also had this to say about the upcoming film based on the comicbook character:

    Quote:
The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago. Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real.

There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision.
Judge Dredd is based on the comicbook character of the same name, where one man is judge, jury and executioner. Sylvester Stallone played the character in the 1995 version. This new movie will not have a connection to the previous one. Shooting in South Africa will begin later this year.
    Link to the article.

This sounds promising. So it looks like it will be a more serious, gritty and realistic take compared to the previous Judge Dredd movie. And the fans who complained about Dredd removing his helmet will be happy to know that he'll be keeping it on this time.

It seems Hannover House (www.HannoverHouse.com), has entered into a movie venture with Vancouver-based Red Bear Entertainment. It’s a $70 million dollar budgeted, CG animated film based on the characters and events introduced from the first Terminator movie, dubbed “Terminator 3000″, according to the press release (also posted on ComingSoon).

Nothing has been said yet in terms of the story, nor have any of the writers nor any of the production talents have been mentioned. But there was one thing in the press release that will most likely get mixed reactions from Terminator fans… it’s been slated to be a PG-13 movie. This was done in order to minimize the violence and is set as a goal by the production team.

The press release also has a bit of brief history about the companies in connection to the Terminator franchise:

    Quote:
Hannover House C.E.O. Eric Parkinson previously served as C.E.O. of Hemdale Home Video, Inc. and Hemdale Communications, Inc., and handled the distribution of the original “Terminator” feature.

Hemdale produced and distributed director James Cameron’s original “Terminator” feature, but released the sequel rights in 1990 to Carolco, which later transferred the rights to ultimately end up under the control of Halcyon Media. Santa Barbara based Pacificor, LLC prevailed in the most recent auction and transfer of rights to the franchise in January, and retains approval and licensing authority over the proposed “Terminator 3000″ project.
More details will be coming soon. Hannover House and Red Bear Entertainment will be releasing details later this year. The animated film will begin production in January 2011.
Here's the link to the article.

To be honest, I don’t know how I feel about this one. I’ll wait until they release more about it. For now I hope that it won’t just be some cash-grab venture.

UPDATE Aug 14 2010: It seems Hannover House may have prematurely announced this project. Deadline reports that Pacificor, the company that owns the rights to the Terminator franchise have sent a cease and desist letter after the announcement yesterday. CEO of Hannover House Eric Parkinson responded claiming that he owns the animation rights to the franchise, which were not included during the sale to Carolco. This is what Parkinson said:

    Quote:
The animation rights were excluded when Hemdale sold Terminator to Carolco and when I left Hemdale, part of my settlement was that I got those rights. However, the way the rest of the contractual rights are written, it would be dangerous for us to do this without Pacificor’s approval. They have certain intellectual rights. The best way to put it is, they can’t make an animated film without me, and we might not be able to make it without them. We are in discussions with WME, and hope we can deal with this expeditiously.
A meeting has been arranged between the two companies. You can see more of this from Deadline.

    Link to Deadline's article.

I've updated the article on shadowrush.com about this as well. But for more of the details checkout Deadline, which also includes a copy of the cease and desist letter on their's if you want to see it. This announcement has turned out to be something more it seems.

Brick director Rian Johnson’s sci-fi thriller “Looper” is now scheduled for production. According to Production Weekly, the project will begin filming in January 2011.

Here’s a brief description of the film from an interview with Johnson by Cinematical.

"Looper is a time travel movie, set in a near future where time travel doesn’t exist but will be invented in a few decades. It’s pretty dark in tone, much different from Bloom, and involves a group of killers (called Loopers) who work for a crime syndicate in the future. Their bosses send their targets hogtied and blindfolded back in time to the Loopers, and their job is to simply shoot them in the head and dispose of the body. So the target vanishes from the future and the Loopers dispose of a corpse that doesn’t technically exist, a very clean system. Complications set in from there. I can’t wait to make it, I’m a big sci-fi fan and it’s going to be a fun world to play in. Fingers crossed."

The film will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. According to SlashFilm, both will be playing Loopers, but from different time periods.
This is a quote from my article here.

I find the concept interesting. It makes me wonder how the film will be structured. There're also hints that the description or hook is just the tip of what the movie really is about. Plus, Joseph and Bruce are in it. I thought Levitt did well in Inception.
  19. Another nice one. I can't wait for GR to release. I have so many plans.

Definitely adding this ViDoc news to my site as well. ^_^
  20. I found this quit interesting too. I'm liking some of the concepts placed into the world being described so far.

I've also posted an article on this here, with a little bit more info on the story.

SlashFilm has also posted (according to them) four images of some of the characters in the book.

Shark-men, ninjas and burlesque girls... I wonder if the shark-men will have lasers?
  21. Hmmm... I'll be watching and giving a review on both. But which to watch first on Friday, that I'm not sure. I'm leaning towards Scott Pilgrim at this point though, and probably catch The Expendables on the weekend. Or maybe reverse it, dunno.

One things for sure, I'm going to be posting the reviews on my site after watching each.
  22. DC Comics and Warner Bros. have announced a new documentary in celebration of DC Comics 75th Anniversary entitled, “Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics”. It features the history of the comic company, narrated by Ryan Reynolds and will be released on DVD on November 9, 2010.

You can see more info on the documentary, the cover art and the trailer here.
  23. Warner Brothers has released a featurette for the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The film will be presented in two parts, the first will open on November 19, 2010, while the second will release on July 15th, 2011. Both releases will be the final installment to the Harry Potter movie franchise. The video is a behind-the-scenes look at the first part of the two-part fantasy film.

You can check it our here.
  24. Hiya E... Just wanted to inform you that there's a good chance I may not be able to make it tonight. With just getting off work and still a lot of things I have to do tonight when I get home.... I don't think I'll make it.
  25. The first trailer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller, Skyline has been released. I've posted about it at my site here.

Or you can also watch it directly at iTunes Movie Trailers.
