Paramount have signed on the writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to pen the next film installment of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, reports Deadline. The film is planned to be a live-action reboot of the franchise and will be produced by Platinum Dunes (the company of Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller).

Paramount and Nickelodeon acquired the global intellectual property rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60 million. With this reboot, they’re planning to develop the property into the next big franchise. Aside from the movie, a television series is also in the works.

Marcum and Holloway shared the credit in writing Marvel’s Iron Man movie, as well as Punisher: War Zone. They’ve also just wrote the script for the planned Highlander reboot for Summit Entertainment.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a gritty and dark comic book. This then spawned a kid-friendly cartoon series, films, a TV show, toys, more comics, video games and recently, a CG film. Laird has said the plan is to make this reboot closer to the comic book source, the original noir-like, gritty comic book series. One of the possibilities is to develop it in a “Batman Begins-style” origin story.

Paramount is fast-tracking and wants a first draft of the script by October, and if all goes well, they are hoping for a 2012 release.

I'm kind of excited about this. Ever since last year, when I heard they were going for a reboot closer to the original comics, I've been hoping that it will end up as something good and maybe even awesome. Hopefully Marcum and Holloway will do well in penning the script.

The live-action part leaves me wary, although I suppose they probably wouldn't be able to get away with doing this kind of interpretation in animated form (movie is released, stupid parents take their kidlets to animated movie despite it being rated PG-13, parents complain).

This is going to happen regardless, simply because it's TMNT.

I wonder why writers/directors feel the need to always reboot something that already has its origin story on film. If all they're going to show us is 4 turtles crawling around in radioactive ooze and being trained in martial arts by a mutated rat, that's been done. Why not pick a story down the road and assume the audience already knows who all the main characters are?

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

i dont see an origin story for the Turtles being all that big a deal. unlike a lot of the other superhero origin stories that spend half the flick or more developing the person who eventually becomes the superhero, it's not like they're going to really cover any great deal of backstory in a TMNT flick. Now i still hold the first Turtles live action flick as a decent adaptation of the material, but i would totally be down for another one.

I thought that actually worked pretty well in the last movie(the animated one).

GODS I hate that word. "Our next big franchise-", "The newest movie franchise-", "This gaming franchise-"
I can't place what year it was when the gaming and film industries sold their souls to the greater demons of marketting and 'franchising'. But it was a sad year.
I know that games and films should be able to make money, and need to as well. But that shouldnt be a result of 'targetted marketing' and 'agressive advertising and publicity initiatives' or 'franchising', and all those other depraved marketting terms that sold themseleves the day they were made.
It should be because the movies and games are GOOD and worth watching/playing! This is why every single movie adaption game to date has been a steaming pile of turd!

The artwork shot there looked interesting. Will be interested to see how it turns out, myself. Witholding judgement until a later date though.

Sounds interesting...

Seeing a new Live-Action TMNT might be worth it. Given that it's been around 20 years since the first LA film was done, a reboot wouldn't hurt. While the origin is widely known, I would look at this as more a setting reboot.

Now don't get me wrong, I think the first LA film still holds up as a film. I would be interested in seeing stuff in tone closer to the original comics. The concept art shown seems to be in a good direction, so I'm willing to give it a wait and see as well.

Thank you for the time...

Not every...Wolverine was pretty good (despite the movie being bad) and I hear only good things about the Scott Pilgrim game...then there's Golden Eye. Movie games made long after the movie have also been very good...The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, The Warriors, Scarface: The World is Yours, and The Thing comes to mind.
