    Paragon Journal?

    Dated November 18th 2008

    That coincides with I13 launch.

If it's only just gone up it's kinda... late
  4. I was running through the creator looking to make a new themed toon, looking for something different, out of the ordinary. I suddenly realised that Poison is unique to MMs, and to me that seems to be a shame.

Most ranged villains would really benefit from this, Doms & Cruppers alike - so why only MMs get it when there's a relatively limited choice of pets that work thematically with it... I'm thinking Zombies and Ninjas at a push.

I can totally agree with the Devs that Poison shouldn't be available for heroes, but if you look at villains, it seems that it's a good power that would fit nicely with other toons, and other powers. Plants, Dark, Radiation & even Sonic would have a nice thematic fit. For me, it seems that while it's only available to MMs it's a sad waste of a valuable game resource. After all, if the CoT can get it on their ranged toons, why can't players?

Any suggestion as to why it's not more widely available? What would you like to see it with?

What we need is to know why, because without having any reason for him to be this way, and I can come up with loads of them, he's just an entry on super****ery.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The characterisation in the books goes someway toward explaining his dour nature. It's somewhat classic immortal isolationism, I think. With his friends vanishing (Dark Watcher) or dropping dead one way or another, he's lonely. He's also a figurehead who people tend to look up to. I think he probably needs people like Manticore to keep him going. People who don't believe he's right all the time and question his authority. At least they treat him like a human instead of someform of god.

    [/ QUOTE ]

There's a few insights in game too, for example today I picked up a badge (I've been searching for the correct entry but my search-fu is weak) that highlights Statesman's attitude - During the first Rikti invasion he and Hero 1 knew they'd never see each other again so they didn't even speak.

I guess States is as alone as it's possible to be in many respects - and it must be painful to continually lose friends as they age and die around you. I guess the obvious choice is, dont' make friends

It's a sad story if you delve into it

I'm glad so many people referenced the books / comics. We need more people to stand up and say they rocked - because they DID, and I'd LOVE TO SEE MORE

    *Plans to re-read both shortly*

I must admit I've not read the books but I did LOVE the Top Cow comics and I was very sad to see them fall down

  10. I'd like to see some kind of moon base/space station and an underwater city

I'd like to see some kind of world-breaking global threat... the CoX equivalent to the Annihilation Wave or Galactus.

More powersets would be good, especially if they were ranged. Every new powerset that's been introduces since I've been playing has been melee based, except for Pain Domination.
  11. I'm possbily getting a mac... but I'll want to use the same account on both platforms.

  13. My guess is about June

DXP weekend is 23rd Jan and the next community event is Valentines. (I think there may be a zombie twist this year)

But Events generally bring new peeps

In April we have the 5th Anniversary - oh.. and did anyone mention I14?

Enough to keep peeps keen. So... nothing for a bit.

What do you think of the cyborg and wedding packs by the way?

I think I'm on record here that my pet hated character is Dr Aeon. What kind of scientist mixes magic and technology. It's not right! Not now, not ever!

    I'll get him one day

    [/ QUOTE ]

Which is why he gets a A+++ from me. Stephen Strange barely knows what to do with the Winds of Watoomb and yet Aeon would bind them into Positron's suit if he got the chance.

Great suggestion. He goes in my "Yes!!!!" collumn
  15. I hate posting in my own thread but I honestly couldn't see how to do this otherwise.

So my fave fave fave by a long shot:

Ghost Widow: She's amazingly original, but she's not a zombie, or a vampire, she's corporeal and can be beaten but she's tough. There's no immediate comicbook comparison to her, and yet she slots in immediately. If there was a "Ghost Widow" book in a CoX comicbook franchise it would quickly turn into the equivalent of Wolverine (ie in every book, because tt works so well.)

One of her characteristics that is uncommon is that she combines brains, brawn and magical powers, and yet is seemingly content to be subservient to Arachnos - but no way is she a lackey. The only comicbook comparison I can come close to is Sue Richards (nee Storm) who took 40 years to evolve from ditzy blonde to the 2nd most dangerous person in the Marvel universe - but the compare isn't direct. GW has the edge.

    Least Fave:

I'm very sad to say for me it's Positron.
To me he's a poor man's Iron Man. He's contained in a special suit because otherwise he'll die. He blasts but as defender type he's not an aggressor. He's not likely to take the fight to the enemy. He doesn't necessarily show the leadership of Stark and even after his rehabilitation, we're not seeing him taking a front role. (I do, however admit that he can't really show his colours when he's not got a regular forum to show what he can do... so to a certain extent, tho the he's been saved from the suit, the character is still damned.) I'd also say that he and Psynapse are a bit too close in that they are both the "tortured reluctant hero"- neither asked for what they got.

I should give Hon Mentions to:

Statesman. It's damned tough being the boss. Sometimes it just sucks and the role is bigger than you. So yeah you get branded as a tightwad/@$$ etc when you wanna do the right thing and you haven't partied in 50 years because you care too much. I think the guy gets a bit more stick than his due. His Marvel counterpart is Captain America who did occasionally manage to cut loose but ultimately made THE sacrifice. The DCU equivalent is Superman, but their resolution is to turn their world-saviour into a blithering idiot when he's in civvies.

Lt David Wincott. Perhaps not a "Signature character" in the traditional sense. He doesn't wear a cape or have powers, but he does know of the dark side and if you just see what he's had to go through (spoiler - do the arc) he's kept the faith. Most men in his position would arm themselves and go hunting with a "no prisoners" attitude.

Nemesis: Fantastic. The perfect Meme. A minor character that has grown from Napoleonic Origins as a supporting toon into somebody who's actually running the game. He's done this from nothing. Minor arcs but so many seemingly more powerful factions (Freakshow, Council, Praetorians) have gone nowhere.

Also Rans: Praetorians. Alter-dimensional alter-egos of existing characters that should have been either a) strangled at birth or b) given massive input. As they stand they have no character and are simply AVs to be smashed to bits for the badge/XP/Inf but with a little bit of tweaking they could potentially be an excellent series of Task Forces. The Alter-Ego of the main Sig toons need a bit more respect. And no, they aren't a Nemesis plot
  16. This came from the spin of a different thread so I wanted to give it some air in a thread of its own.

I really love this game and I actually admire a lot of the back story. There was a seriously concerted effort to invest in the world, and there is a wealth of back story - so much so that I'd argue that in a few instances it rivals some of the long established comicbook characters that we already know and love.

That's an achievement. Seriously, it is. The comic books have had almost 50 years to produce their product. City of Heroes has been around for like 10% of the time, but there is a wealth of material (if you care to look.)

So: Where do you stand? Who are your favourite signature characters? Who are your least? Why do you love and/or hate? What draws you to them?

Here we are in a comic-book inspired world - but we've mostly transcended the comicbook. (I actually genuinely belive that CoX can break new ground in that arena.)

So who are your main guys in CoX and why? Who are the guys you hate? (Why do you hate them?)

Some of the signature characters are pretty anonymous and I'm interested if they come out of the woodwork.

    Over to you

Ummm... for the sake of clarity, could we have a bit of further explanation of the month? October, November or December?

If in doubt, always go with what's in bold. I never forget to update that bit, since it's obvious. Fixed the OP.

Also is this a single creative genius spanning a 2 month period or do we make nominations for November AND December?

    [/ QUOTE ]

There will be two winners announced, one for Nov and one for Dec. Given Nov was such a busy month there will likely be a few consolation prizes handed out as well. Everyone is welcome to nominate twice, being once for each month.

ok thanks for the clarification In that case I nominate Happy Dan and Dr Drestiny for their stirling efforts in the NaNoDraMo

    Swift Justice?

Sure it's a bit simplistic but I think you've got to suspend disbelief otherwise this becomes "City of Criminal Investigations" and "City of Forensic Analysts" - which isn't the game I subscribed to.

If you try any work of fiction there are lots of plot-holes if you look. I think in a case like this it's wise to assume that you've been to speak to your contact, they've gone and some some very good research and are trusted enough to have gotten the correct answer, but are giving you the precis otherwise every mission would turn into a novel.

  23. I suspect most of your points are dealt with by game mechanic practicalities, and editorial restrictions.

But to answer a couple of specific points, have you never seen Michael Caine put his hand in his raincoat pocket and make somebody walk to a destination in front of him. Just the belief that worse will happen if you don't comply is often threat enough and you are, after all, a supervillain - so kidnap victims should be scared of your rep from the start.

Killing civvies would denude the Isles of populace quciker than you could say "farming team?" - and thus the already weakened economy of the Isles would collapse. No dictator permits the random destruction of the populace and you ARE on the database! Recluse knows who you are - and civvies are his cash cow.

Arena = Coliseum. Villainous doesn't mean wanton destruction if the order of the day every day. Sometimes just proving a point is sufficient. Nuff said.
