Quote:I haven't started a new blaster in forever, but your description makes me want to!I'd say my Ice/Elec blaster solos better b/c of the slows and the 3 holds I have: freezing blast, shocking grasp (a melee move), and shocking bolt (from the elec mastery pool). I could have 4 if I picked up bitter freeze ray. Long story short, nothing is better than being able to have 3 baddies held and dead before they can hurt you, or to be able to hold a boss for an entire fight. Also I have some very nice melee moves on my ice/elec, havok punch, thunderstrike, and shocking glass and am never at a loss for endurance with power sink.
Quote:I also really enjoy my AR/psy for solo play. -
I don't know about "best" but I've always been fond of my Fire/Energy Manipulation (EM) blaster. Boost Range is awesome for Blaze and Fire Breath. Drop a stealth IO into Super Speed, then walk up to a mezzing enemy like a Rikti Mesmerist... Aim+buildup+Total Focus. Threat gone.

Quote:If the admittedly odd wording of the announcement is right, then one possible explanation is that they had early stage development going on for a second title. That got the axe, and they adjusted headcount accordingly. That would account for both an increase in focus and reducing headcount.Normally when I think of focus, I think an dincrease of activity in certain area, which normally results with more labor; or folks are moved from one area deemed not as critical to another more critical area. But how can we have "more" focus with "less" people?

Quote:Most folks I've chatted with in game are only vaguely aware that Alignment Merits even exist, let alone what they're worth. Most think the only value of running tip missions is to switch sides.People discovering this "news" 58 days after Issue 18 launched is kind of ridiculous to me.
That said, I'm well aware of the rules and I still think the limits on how rapidly A-Merits can be cashed in are pointless. I can respect the design decision throttling the speed at which someone can change sides, but I don't see the benefit from limiting the rate of A-Merit conversion. If someone banked a bunch of them then wants to purple out a character all in one session, they should be allowed to do so. -
The search window should pop up a description of the color code when you mouse over a character name. So when you mouse over a purple name, a little hint window says "Leader of a team with less than 8 people on it."
That way the window colors become self-documenting. -

Quote:I'm one of the guilty ones. The devs hoped that the rewards in those zones would encourage voluntary PvP; instead they basically lure targets into the zone. I don't find PvP enjoyable, at least against an experienced PvPer. Thus I just want to get my goodies and get out. If I get attacked, rather than thinking "What fun! This really spices things up and is a totally fair risk for the reward I'm after" I instead think "Argh! Can't this guy see that I don't want to PvP? Why does he have to grief me? Is it really any fun to kill someone who isn't mutually looking for a fight?"What kills me is that since then, on the off chance I happen to actually run in to someone in those zones (because I go for temp powers or badges or something) People are actually confused and even a little hurt when you beat them down for a meteor fragment or nuke launch code or something. [snip] Somehow the community at large seems to have forgotten that the whole point of those zones was an objective based reward for PvP
Your point of view is totally legit, of course. Just explaining what goes through my head in that type of situation. You're 100% within the intent of the zone to attack me if you find me there.... but I'm still going to resent it. -
This is a little off topic, but the way I've always seen the term "burst damage" used, it was more than a single attack. Generally it was a quick sequence of attacks that wouldn't include any given power used twice. It's particularly important against foes that have high regen or heals; you want a big spike of damage.

Quote:Different recipes have different merit costs. You can get 5 random rolls for a single A-merit. Or 2 will get you a pricey recipe like a Luck of the Gambler 7.5% global recharge. But while you can technically get purples and PvP IOs with A-merits, the prices are extremely high. What are the alignment merits good for, anyway - and to whom do you turn them in?

Quote:My niche is Kinetic Weapons, Mathematic Proofs and Nevermelting Ice. I work hard and use a variety of alts, but I think the results speak for themselves: after a few weeks of working this niche I have almost THIRTY THOUSAND inf saved up. You may find that hard to believe, but it's true. You just need to be willing to study market mechanics and bid smart. I can't believe people farm when they could do this.Besides, who the heck is going to waste time flipping common salvage when there's so little money in it? Do people really do that?

Quote:To each his own. I have a 50 Fire/Kin Corr and a 50 Fire/Dark Corr. Of the 2, I found the Dark to be far easier to solo.If you want to solo a Corruptor (or Defender, for that matter), I am of the opinion that Kinetics is the only option for secondary (or primary, as appropriate). I have a 50 Kinetics/Dark Defender, and a Fire/Kinetics Corruptor sitting at 30-something. Both of them are awesome in their own way.

I think most of the hardware gurus hang out in the Technical Issues & Bugs forum. You might want to repost there.

One caveat about Shields: it's a bit on the squishy side early on compared to sets like Willpower. Just make sure to load up on Lucks before each mission. Swing by a contact, an arena or Architect Entertainment and fill your insp tray. Popping even 1 small Luck makes you incredibly sturdy; it's great for enabling you to jump in and be lead brute on a large team.
As you get higher level, a combination of slotting up and layering on additional defense will make you a lot tougher. At level 50, the only thing that is serious kryptonite to my brute is Devouring Earth--when they drop a crystal eminator it basically allows them all to ignore defense.
One thing I strongly recommend is for you to monitor your defense on screen: click the Powers menu, then click the Combat Attributes menu, then right click on your key defense attributes and select "monitor". That way you can instantly see if you're being debuffed. Very handy. -
I dimly recall that last year when they were ramping up, one or two of the reqs looked a lot like project manager openings for a new project. It could be they had a small team working on a side project like COH2 or something entirely new, and that project got axed. That'd be commensurate with smaller team = increased focus.

Consider this my official plea for someone to videotape the panel discussion. The info they share there is always worth hearing.

Quote:I too think you're being extreme in how you interpreted his comment about Colin Brown's work. His exact phrasing was "our crack animator Colin Brown...". What is offensive about that? Should he have said "our decent-but-in-no-way-comparable-to-BaBs animator Colin Brown"? How about "Colin Brown did an acceptable job on these animations. Let me just add that Back Alley Brawler is still the superior animator, even though he had nothing to do with these and my mentioning him is somewhat absurd, given the context."He's also a shill and a ham, and if you feel its ridiculously hostile for me to point that out, or to interpret his comment earlier as brushing Babs under the rug a bit, then that's fine.
-
My best wishes go out to the folks laid off. It's not a great time to be without a job.
I hope BaBs wasn't part of their number. He's always been one of the few devs that interacts frequently with players on the forums--not an easy task when so many people's flamethrowers have a hair trigger.
I fully expected layoffs after GR; glad they're not larger. My guess is that they're going to fund development until the Incarnate system is fully rolled out, then scale back further and just ride the revenue curve down.
Quote:As much as I'd love a COH2, I just can't see it. Sequel games always split the player base, and there aren't enough players here to support that. Imagine the cost of developing a new top-tier sequel to COH, then funding that with the revenue from 40K players. Doesn't add up. It's just a different competitive environment out there now. With the high profile failures of Tabula Rasa and APB ($106M and $100M down the toilet, respectively), can you imagine how difficult it'd be raising money to fund a new competitor? You'd have to promise you could get 100-200K subscribers, something that COH hasn't managed to do for a long time.I think if Going Rogue turns out to be a sales disappointment, NCSoft will play the CoH2 card, and risk a bit more money now. -

Minor correction: the exploration badge isn't on the building. It's at the apex of the arch-like structure that connects to the building. Either fly to the top of that or simply run up.

Quote:My main brute is named Mr Smashtastic, so I'd say you nailed that one! Some of us blow a ton of time/money I/Oing are Smashtastic creations.
Quote:The question is when you are spending a ton on a Brute, is it better to go for huge Recharge to get your powers/heals/attack chain up more, or do you try to make your Brute tankier? -
Given that you're not concerned with set bonuses, just use the single inherent slot and call it a day. The regen rate in Health is not large enough for you to notice much difference between 1 and 3 slots.
-
Not really. Proliferation is handled by Castle, the powers guy. The animations were created by Colin Brown.
-
I suppose there might be a player out there planning a build that somehow was aware of the Glad +Def yet unaware of the Steadfast +Def, although I'm inclined to doubt it. I've never seen a posted build that included the Gladiator +Def IO but excluded the Steadfast. If someone is drooling over the Gladiator IO, it's because they've already got the Steadfast.
-
I believe that in a nutshell is why the devs are happy with how rare purples are. They want some loot in the game that you have to be very hardcore to get. They're fine with a casual player complaining about how it's impossible to slot out their favorite character with purples.

Quote:Actually it's very easy to get Rage to recharge before it runs out. If you overlap Rage you avoid the -Def penalty, although you still get the -Damage penalty. That's what I do with my Shields brute.2) I'd wouldn't go SS/SR just because rage has a -def penalty and SR relies almost completely on defense. YMMV.
Castle has said in the past he considers the Rage crash broken; he doesn't like people being able to sidestep the crash. But hopefully if/when he does address this he comes up with a new solution because the a big drop in Def is basically a death sentence for SR or Shields.
