Quote:Ooooo that reminds me. I found a nasty clipping issue with the Fish Monster boots and normal tights. You can see right clean through the kneecaps at the join! I took a screenshot of it - where's the best place to email it/report the issue? It is neither Electric nor Boogaloo.
The next Halloween event and subsequent costume pack.
(goes to fill out survey in the meanwhile) -
Quote:TOTALLY disagree - and said my peace about it in the Make Your Case thread.Agreed, redside doesn't need any zone revamps or new zones, just new content.
All I'll say now is: at some point, folks need to keep in mind that a zone's environment/themed atmosphere can be a huge draw or a complete deterrent to players using the space regardless of how great the content located there seems to be. The content on red side is pretty damn good in most places (not all though) however the zones themselves need a cosmetic "flip" from slums to extravagance to in order to make them more attractive for exploration by heroes *and* villains.
No villain in his right mind is going to steal from the rich and then go back to living in a slum... (and why would the players spend time exploring the slums either?) -
After a good night's sleep, I realize now that *a lot* of potential zone revamps got ignored for discussion - but there's only so much they can accomplish in a single session. What's stranger still though that really obscure zones like IP and Striga got mentions at all... (although turning Striga into co-op/red side zone did occur to me, I figured it was so low priority for an already near-perfect zone that I didn't think it was worth mentioning).
I guess there's no such thing as a common "obvious" for a player base of this size. -
Quote:I agree to a point - the powers and costume workshops were riveting, although I really think the crowd chose the wrong powerset to work on. Watching the summit on uStream was rough - not a lot of visuals, not a lot of new info and tons of people talking out of view/earshot in the audience and very little commentary from the devs. Last year I remember tons of slides, tons of dev chatter, and questions left to the VERY end for 10 minutes. I think the program this year was weak, and here's some options I'd recommend to make it more interesting:Thinking about it now.
I have to say I do prefer it when at least some portion about the Pummit is dedicated to 'big reveals'. The format as it is now is kind of sound, but I feel less impetus to sit and watch it via UStream. Given the heavy emphasis on player interaction over presentation for the future makes me feel more at a loss for not attending. At least with the other way I felt I could get excited watching it and seeing the different upcoming tidbits. This way, I feel kind of helpless because I can't voice my thoughts or responses in any way like the attendees, the Ustream audience is just there to observe, our feedback, not that it doesn't matter but it just isn't heard.
For the most part I don't think I walked away from this Summit, as just a Ustreamer, with anything that I didn't already know from Beta, with the exceptions of the Rad Armor and the post-apoc costume.
- Keep the powerset panel but consider "design armor, design mastermind set, etc" - break it up by ATs
- Keep the costume set panel - its perfect as is
- Keep the zone discussion panel more "dev focused" less Q&A - give equal time to discussing difficulties of renovating red side
- Add a marketplace reveals/improvements panel
- Add a Mission Architect reveals/improvements panel
- Add a QoL discussion panel
- Add a PvP discussion panel
Even if they're not able to make immediate improvements based on player wants/desires, its still good to have discussions about these legacy systems. Otherwise CoH will get the reputation of constantly adding systems it doesn't support in the long-term.
I'd also recommend for the Ustream crowd that dev mikes be turned off unless they're in use. Too many times I heard aside/private conversations that weren't meant to be heard and they echoed over the actual speaker(s) trying to make a point/share information.
And last but not least: DO NOT PUT A Q&A as the focus of the ENDGAME panel - it was more questions/aimless audience chatter and less Dev-driven answers and very, very painful to watch. Leave the Q&A until the end and try to have a better, more focused agenda for the front-end discussion. That last session was EXTREMELY painful to watch and you could tell both the Devs and the audience were zoning out by the end.
That said, the Devs did a good job with what agenda there was and Zwill was a great moderator. Thanks all for taking the time and effort to make the summit happen. -
Oh hang on, did they ever have that Paragon Market session or was it part of the keynote? Was anything juicy revealed there?
NVM - I'm watching the Keynote again. I missed a good chunk of the first half. -
Quote:I agree - although I'm extremely mad not one red size zone argument was presented (or if there was I was AFK when it happened). IP is soooooooo not a zone worth the time right now.I got the idea the IP revamp was separate from what the players were suggesting. Aren't we getting an IP revamp and a revamp selected from the player suggestions?
I'm also pretty disappointed with that crowd in the room for voting radiation armor over throwing weapons. TW would have been a GREAT powerset to build with the playerbase. RA is pretty limited for optionable design in comparison.
Ah well. -
Quote:Ha! Was gonna say you must be from Pennsylvania then I saw your locale (I spent 12 years growing up in various parts of PA and photographed a lot of abandoned steel mills, so I hear ya).I know they're textile plants, but at some level, Kings Row always reminded me of the decaying steel-and-coal town I grew up in, so I've just got to answer ya:
No, No we don't.
...Please burn it to the ground.
No, burning's too simple. Blow it up.
Nuke it.
Big mushroom cloud. Spectacular pyrotechnics.
Make those stee... err... textile mills glow. -
No, I mean like an underground CITY... Whole buildings, abandoned parks and train cars and the lot all under an enclosed roof... Its been done in the 60s Spiderman cartoon and an episode or two of classic Scooby Doo. There's also an underground city in Seattle which I'm sure the devs are familiar with (its very small scale but it is there).
At this point, any Year One city zone that gets a refresh needs to provide a unique experience from any other zone otherwise players won't bother with it. Doesn't mean they all need to be scrapped but it does mean the devs need to have a unique concept already in mind to make the refresh worthwhile.
IMHO, you'd have to do something really extraordinary with KR (like turning it into an underground city, for example) in order to justify keeping it around at all. There are just too many other Year One city zones that do a same or better job than KR. -
We lost Galaxy City didn't we? (Which i'm sure was not an easy decision). So what's the big deal? Focus on improving Steel and Skyway and throw Kings Row down a crack in the earth (and wouldn't it be cool to explore a secret underground city zone...).
-
No question, it absolutely does. But i'm not sure what purpose the zone actually serves other than representing a slum community. You could say the slums are better represented by the Lost in Skyway City, and just do away with Kings Row completely. Gameplay wise, aside from earning the raptor pack, i'm not sure what purpose Kings Row serves - and Id hate to see development time/resources wasted on a dead end zone everyone bypasses on their way to somewhere else.
-
-
Foolishly, I created a spreadsheet listing out zones, and comparing availability to each side. I'm sure i've made some errors but I thought this comparison might guide our thinking/discussion a little better... (or not). Apologies if I built it wrong or it proves completely useless.

Quote:Do we even need Kings Row anymore?Kings Row, for having some of the ugliest textures seen by early level F2Pers. I mean no disrespect, but compared to much of the game, that zone is hard on the eyes.
There are so many ways for heroes to zoom from lvl 1-10 without even touching Kings Row now, I'm not sure that this kind of revamp should be a priority. The same can't be said about red side zones which have a one-way journey for villains until lvl 20. This is another reason why I advocate a red side fix. I really do think more folks (heroes, vigilantes, rogues and villains alike) would venture/play there more often if there were more to do. And its anti-cultural to assume there can only be one way to play this game (ie let's not focus on red side because villains are a minority culture...).
If red side revamps can't happen, then at least make Striga/abandoned hazard zones more lowbie/co-op friendly so lowbie villains can also enjoy. -
Quote:The idea is that a red zone revamp could increase numbers - *if* there was more incentive to play over there. By all means, make all future red zone revamps co-op. There are enough rogues and vigilantes running around to merit joint content in any zone. But red side zones especially are in need of a makeover...Have to be realistic here, redside isnt going to get a zone all to themselves are they. If they do, i cant see it being a large zone either.
There just isnt enough redside numbers to warrant putting in so much development and it would almost certainly have to be solo able too.
As for the Shadow Shard, methinks I'll be happily surprised this weekend... -
I'm really surprised to hear anyone say red side zones are fine/don't touch them.
At the very least, all the red side zones need an architectural face lift. *Every* street/block looks the same no matter which zone you're in. A brownstone in Mercy is a brownstone in Sharkshead which is a brownstone in St Martial and it sucks. Red side zones have great localized set pieces (Nerva jungle, Giza casino district, the mining pit in Sharkshead) that gets lost in the greater generic landscape.
Ok, we get it, the Rogue Isles are smothered to poverty stricken ruins but what villain wants to live it up in a ghetto wasteland? If villains steal from Paragon City, then the Rogue Isles should be a glistening hideaway like Dubai. Anything you could ever want or need in your criminal life - but for a very high price...
That said, ideally I'd want Port Oakes and Nerva Archipelago made over in detail. Red side players spend more time in these zones (pre Grandville) more than any other. If Port Oakes is Dubai, then make Nerva a deadly tropical resort paradise...
Of course, I'd also recommend an uprising throwing out Recluse. The Rogue Isles need a new boss - which could be a golden opportunity for the player... If done right.
(And no, alas, I won't be at the Plummit to plead a case for Red side; I wish I could!) -
Quote:That's all great for the usual stagedressing props (costumes, powers, zone makeovers, etc) but it does feel like the end for any new game functionality or systems. In my heart, I was still holding out for a new "custom foe" or "npc faction" system but no chance of those now. Don't get me wrong: i'm grateful for what we've got and what we've yet to get in the Incarnate system but beyond that? They just added a producer, a lead developer, and a concept artist. I'm guessing we still have a few issues to go before the new game comes along and kills us in our sleep.
Eh, hope still springs eternal for I24 and beyond. -
Agreed, but for different reasons. I'm far more interested in Shadowhunter's pecs than I am Penny's bosom (which doesnt even come close to her gi-normous a**.... Put it away, girl. Put it away!!!)
-
Interesting. If its going to change with every issue, I'd really like to see a featured player or sg once a year.

Quote:All true but maybe somebody at some point could take a look at the cost of crafting "decoratives" for bases? This comes up in every game I've worked on. Anecdotal observation has shown me that, while benevolent in nature, updates such as this never go over well with the largest, and most vocal, segments of the Community.
There always has to be at least *some* new hotness. Now the thing of it is, revamping old content can often times count as *new* content, so it does pull double duty (I've yet to talk to someone who doesn't call Dark Astoria "new content".) Ideally, you can work it so that you're killing two birds with one stone.
Besides, the things you're talking about would likely take much more than a single issue of development time.
Slow field has some INSANE requirements (both resource-wise and cost of prestige) and in the end people only use it for faux-waterpool effects. Little things like this could use a quick eyeball I'm sure and improve base QoL greatly in the long run (and with minimal effort). -
Quote:GREAT, great powerset! I agree with this list of weapon customization alternatives though - particularly the Icicle. That's just brilliant. Hopefully the Devs can find time in the schedule to make this happen.Time to say what we want for staffs:
-Spear (w/ tassel as a option, heck you could probably have an "option" with a bunch of variants like prongs, tassels, different spearheads, etc.)
-Halberd (although that could be used with the Titan's Weapon as well...)
-Glaive
(Okay, I'll stop there or it'll start sounding like 2nd. ed. D&D's weapons inventory)
-Runestaff (with glowing runes!)
-Ornate staff (gold, with gems and such)
-Both of the above should have the option of a knob in the end.
-Natural staff (rougher than the "polished wood" look we have)
-Energy Staff.
-Icicle (stalactite as alternate skin) -

Quote:Now that's some good stuff.
Kinda weird to think we're wrapping up Cole's Praetorian invasion arc but maybe it was time. That and the death of Statesman is a whole lot of "epic change" to happen in one year. I applaud it because it means the game is still quite a lively and vibrant investment for Paragon Studios and NCsoft (Begone, evil doomsayers!) but it also means they've got a long trek ahead trying to nip/tuck the legacy content to reflect these changes.
That said, if I can put on my fortune teller's head gear for a sec.....
(stares into crystal ball and sneezes)
Whoops, sorry! I see....
1) Issue 24: Shadow Shard revamp
2) Issue 25: Arachnos Rises! (or Arachnos vs Enemy X Battle Royale) which may/may not include a Rogue Isles Revamp
I won't look too much deeper as I'm liable to break the ball, lol.
