  1. I just wonder if my team is laughing at me behind my back because my Taser Dart is still in my attack chain on a level 37 troller.

But hey - it's a HOLD, dammit - it totally works - sure you can't enhance it but mine hits often enough that I see no reason to scrap it and replace it with a "real" attack.

Instead, I can use that power-pick to add more Rad debuffs. Win-Win, IMHO.

    Plus...

(I like the anim - the little wires that trail, the zzzzt sound, the sight of the baddies jerking in hi-voltage agony when it hits!)

I've played around a bit with Ctrl+C-ing portions of Contacts' mission text and Pasting them into team chat so people can share the back-story stuff.

IMHO I've found it to be more trouble than it's worth - nobody seems to care that much!

This is good advice - don't bite off more than you can chew at first or you risk souring the entire experience. Make sure you allow time/energy in your first couple of semesters to familiarize yourself with campus, your colleagues, your instructors, and the community (both academic and "civilian").

Also - consider (a reasonable amount of) social activities part of the curriculum. Chances are, when you finish and get your degree, your first job won't come as a result of getting an A+ in some course, but as a result of friends and connections you made along the way.

Finally - if you ever find yourself stumbling or struggling, make sure you take advantage of all the resources available through the school. Meet with instructors ("office hours" - good for improving grades AND valuable networking skills), go to Help labs, meet regularly with your Advisor (whether you "need" to or not), use Health services as required (having a free therapist can be useful), even consider sending quick notes to your Dean from time to time just to show him/her you really care.

I went back to school after mastering and retiring from another career - it was an amazing experience.

Always remember you're there to learn more than just what's taught in the classrooms. Learn social, networking, and work-habit skills as well. They'll come in even more useful than the in-class stuff, I guarantee.

    Good Luck A_C!

I'm still not sure why we have or need Rep, but if anyone (besides SteelClaw and Philotic_Knight) deserve +Rep, it's definitely Psychoti.

I have a suggestion for this specifically - I have a macro that sometimes gets a few LOLs but always helps keep the A.D.D. players from A-FREEEKIN' OUT while I look for more teammates...

/macro LF "say, Looking for more...$$emote Binoculars"

I find that while the binocs are out, players are much less likely to get antsy, as they know you are working to make the mission more fun/rewarding.

If they see you just standing there while you're looking - they don't know if you're AFK, chatting with friends, picking your nose, whatever.

Oh and I wanted to add to my post above, about Forming and Leading teams:

That when Leading, I *always, always, always* say Goodbye and Thanks to any player leaving the team (except those leaving in the middle of the mish - I have very little patience for that).

But even those that leave in the middle of a mish may have a good reason for doing so. And if they've been with the team for a while, and have been good teammates, consider offering to Kick them, to save them the run back out to the mish door (a Kicked teammate is automatically taken off the mish map).
  7. Wanted to thank everyone for their thoughtful replies.

Dunno why I find this so fascinating, but I do.

Not surprised to see the full spectrum of playstyles/lifestyles described here already, but I think if you delved deep enough you'd find the majority of players falling into two camps: Those whose playstyles mimick their real-lives, and those who use the game to go in completely the opposite direction.

Kinda wish I was in academia and could get a grant to really drill down into the how's and why's people play this game the way they do.

    Great stuff guys, thanks again.

Fascinating. Thanks for this thoughtful, insightful reply.

Me: Why? I like pretending to be a superhero and help out.

How? I play for fun first and foremost - it's not about getting xx heroes to 50 as quickly as possible, or min/maxing my 50s, or badge-hunting, or making billions on the market - I just do whatever seems fun to me at that moment (often this involves bouncing around Atlas healing/buffing/SBing lowbies on the street - no xp, no inf gain involved, I just think it's FUN).
  11. zOMG - SteelClaw comes through in a big way - better than expected - thanks much Steelie, you da bestest!

My personal fave: Drink it up Gamer Boy - this is the closest....

    LMAO.
  12. For me I've found that I play buff- and heal-heavy Defenders and Controllers because they fit well with the "heroic" aspect that drew me to this game in the first place.

Sometimes I need to bring out one of my Blasters after a rough day at work, rough commute, fight with the gf, etc.

But I find that the "care-bear" aspect of buffing and healing matches up pretty well with who I am in RL - I'll always stop to help a confused-looking tourist...just TODAY I found a Blackberry on the subway and made sure it got back to its rightful owner (not the first time I've done this)... I'll give give my seat on the subway to seniors, pregnant ladies, disabled, etc...

Wondering if the same holds true across the board.

If you've got alt-itis - would you by any chance be a hoarder in real life?

If you spend a lot of time in WW/Black Market - are you a financial high-roller in real life?

If you spend a lot of time building/tweaking your SG base - are you a "nester" or perhaps an actual architect in RL?

There are other comparisons/links I could suggest, but let me leave it here and see what y'all come up with...

I get a high off of saving that teammate from the brink of death - bringing back to life the vital tanker who is laying dead at the feet of a dozen enemy goons. I know that im not scoring all the XP that I could, but I know that I am doing my team a great service and that is all the satisfaction I need. I felt the same way playing Diablo on the playstation 10 years ago. After my first week of playing this game, I'm already seeing alot of people who have lost sight of why they play RP games like this.
No way Sydney - you're not alone there.

I'd say that 80% of the time I'm feeling the desire to aid my team in a Heroic way - it just fits with why I play this game in the first place, and simply CAN'T play CoV (have tried many times, never made it past mid-20s on any Vill).

I have buff-heavy Defenders and Controllers - no Scraps or Tanks - and for that other 20% of the time?

I feel like blowin' **** up - bad day at work, bad commute, fight with the gf, whatever - and then it's one of my Blasters!

Edit for: Full-thread-reading FTL - but that's a different poster so I guess my question below still stands...

    Mr. Heat Stroke:

Could you expand a bit on the keybinds suggestion, please?

What's your favorite way to keybind for SB?

I'm cool with /binds use them all the time, you don't have to be specific in parsing - just lemme know how you've found binds best benefiting the doling out of SB.

What actually matters isn't whether a power is in your primary or secondary, but what Attribute Modifiers the power's effects use, and what those Attribute Modifiers are for your AT (It just works out that the Attribute Modifiers and powers are set up such that, usually, Primary > Secondary). So, while Radiant Aura on a Defender heals for 133.862 and 117.799 on a Controller, both get +30% Recharge from Accelerate Metabolism, and Choking Cloud on a Controller lasts 7.45s while on a Defender it lasts 5.96s.

This is because the Ranged_Heal (Radiant Aura) modifier for Defenders is higher than for Controllers, Ranged_Ones (Accelerate Metabolism's +Rech) is the same for everyone, and Ranged_Immobilize (Choking Cloud; there is no Ranged_Hold modifier) is higher for Controllers than it is for Defenders.

You can see the actual values of the various Attribute Modifiers on City of Data
    Gah! *head asplodes*

I like "rule of thumb" - all them fancy numbers is makin my thinkin-thing hurt.

See my latest effort is a Plant/Rad troller around 27 right now.

But Yeah I'm not seeing the kind of "they gets all buttery-like" when I throw the debuffs on, that I expected.

    I'll roll a Rad/* Defender next.

(not fer nuttin, but I've come to the conclusion that if you run large teams, as I almost always do, nothing makes the xp roll faster than a Rad on the team. So I rolled a Rad, now I *always* have a Rad on my team!)

In any case, you may want to check out Red Tomax:

Wow yeah - redtomax links were very illuminating - thx much.
  17. Okay so, if I want to be the best Radiation-set hero I can be, I should really roll a Rad/* DEFENDER vs. a */Rad CONTROLLER then...

    Thanks heroes!
  18. Will a Rad/* hero have more effective Rad powers than a */Rad hero, regardless of slotting?

I think the Wiki hints at that (read it somewhere "official" - maybe even the manual?), but don't really understand how it works.

Yes'm I remember this too - it was just post-i15 release and someone mentioned it in the feedback.

BaBs saw it and said if you can get me a comprehensive, up-to-date list I'll make it happen.

List was provided, and I've been monitoring ever since to see if BaBs would follow through.

    Of course, he did.

Oh, now *I* have to specify it's NOT a farm?!?!?

    Ridiculous.
  24. There are DOZENS of valuable posts here already, I only want to add...

that I form really fun 8-man teams EVERY SINGLE time I log on (the only exception being dbl-xp weekend - THAT was a chore).

I lead teams primarily because I don't trust anyone else (barring a select few) to do it as efficiently and enjoyably as I.

But LIKE ANYTHING ELSE IN LIFE, forming and running teams gets easier and easier every time you do it.

Just gotta jump in, make some mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and keep pluggin away.

When forming teams, a polite, literate Bind is MANDATORY, I use:

/bind x "tell $target, Level $level-ish team LFM - would you like to join us?"

I never begin forming a team until I have AT LEAST one of my own, level-appropriate missions ready-to-go (meaning I already have it selected as the active mish before I invite the first member).

I often try to run around and grab 2 or 3 good mish before forming my team, so we can steam-roller right along with mere seconds between exiting the finished mish and moving to the next.

Beyond FORMING a team, I've found that most players respond well to an actual LEADER, who leads by example and provides solid direction and commands WHEN APPROPRIATE.

When Leading I usually have the map open, constantly checking for SPLIT teams and turned-around stragglers. Stragglers get a TP, Split teams get a:

"REGROUP on **(tank, scrap, or Kheld meat shield)** pls".

Keep an eye out for inadvertant mega-aggro (more groups than intended) and let fly:

"Fall back & Regroup NOW pls" if it looks too dangerous (I usually wait until 2 heroes are down before issuing this request).

Leading can be a chore, but it can also be extremely rewarding. I get private Tells as they are leaving, thanking me for inviting them, from heroes on just about every team I form.

BOTTOM LINE: Like everything in life, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

Start forming and leading teams... you may not be great at it, at first, but you will improve, and it will make the game more fun, in the long run, I promise.
