  1. Most of my oldest still-played characters are defenders.

    2 of my 4 50s are defenders.

    Retrogression - first 50 - kin/rad defender (mind epic) - Champion
    Neutrino Lynx - most recent 50 - emp/dark defender (power epic) - Infinity

    2 of my other old 'main' characters are defenders, both on champion:
    Gamma Radiant (rad/psi) and Crystal Siren (storm/dark). They even have their own web pages... Can't remember their exact current levels, maybe 40 and 36.

    I originally made my dark/elec on Champion (name then was Lauren Star). It was a pun off "lone star" and she was a cowgirl design heroine - but - I got some comments that put me off her, and deleted her to make room.

    Later I ended up recreating the dark/elec defender on Infinity, as a male, now my highest level male character in the game (level 37). Current name, Dark's Star. Also on infinity is Monogatari, kin/ice, level 16 (made to do Posis for merits with a matching claw/dark scrapper).

    I also have a couple defenders on Virtue: Syreeshee, sonic/sonic, level 20 or so, and Omatcar, kin/archery, in the teens.

    And one - made at the same time as Gamma Radiant, just because I could get the name I wanted on Freedom but not on Champion: Curie, rad/psi. I play her sometimes still and she's level 15 or so.
  2. hmm... I am a female, over 40... (but in my 30s when I started playing coh)

    I have 4 50s - all female
    I have 8 more in the 30s and 40s - one male
    I have 12 in the 20s - 3 males.

    lower than that, I can think of 5 other males in the teens (a couple brutes, a warshade, a defender, and a mastermind). I probably have way more females but can't recall enough names or levels exactly.

    Of all my ATs, the only one that's primarily male is tankers. My highest and 2nd highest tanker are both male (one in the 20s one in the teens).

    2 of my 50s and my highest level male (37) are defenders.

    my only 50 villain and my highest villain male (27) are corrupters.

    So I'd say about 1/8 male characters here, with maybe 1/20 the play time.

    The highest level, male defender, is a remake of a concept character who was female originally. I disliked her name after a while and deleted her, to remake on another server, different name, and male.

  4. Don't lose confidence in yourself. You can do it. If a topic is too hard at first, keep trying, ask questions, don't be afraid to admit you don't understand and ask and question until you do. Persistence will get you there, you have the equipment to learn engineering, but it then takes effort - and you seem set to put in the effort. Don't beat your head on a brick wall though if something is not coming clear after your own efforts, reach out and ask someone. A classmate, a teacher, TA, even a librarian... your friends... a new viewpoint can often get you past the hurdle.

    And the most important thing I learned in college is that some things are simply not known by anyone. I'm not talking about conspiracies or 'the truth is out there' type things or 'things man was not meant to know' - these are ordinary things that someone will know someday and everyone will know eventually - but right now, no one knows yet. So don't be surprised when you start learning where the edges of human knowledge are when you study your higher subjects.
  5. Mostly people's answers to this issue have to do with whether they find more attachment to existing, though hardly played, heroes and villains, or to the concepts for yet uncreated ones.

    If you're more attached to your concept for a new, about to create character, than you are to the ones you made a long while back but not playing lately (maybe in other games you don't even subscribe to anymore) then you think it is obvious that the devs should make names available from those old, not played in years, no longer subscribed for years accounts.

    If you're more attached to your memories of characters you once enjoyed, even if you have absolutely no interest in playing them again now, and have no idea if you will in the next 5 years - but you might - but probably not - then you think it's bad business to take away names, even potentially, from the pool of potential re-subscribers.

    I can see both viewpoints. I am mostly in the latter camp myself. I would be upset to know that the level 20ish bard I made, and didn't even enjoy playing that much, in Everquest, which I seriously never plan to play again - and haven't for 5 years - lost his name or was deleted. Yes, I remember the names of most of my low level characters from that game.

    I played Star Wars Galaxies briefly in its first year - when was that, 8 years ago now? - and barely got both my Bothan scount Velvit Puffmoose and my Twilek medic Grania up to the 2nd level of their skill trees, but I felt a sense of loss when they were deleted... (I'd made them on my husband's account and he needed the spaces) and still vividly recall their names as you see.

    In one actual case, I have been contacted by someone in CoH who desperately wanted a name I had. It was one of my corrupters on Virtue, who I played interimittently every couple weeks and was in the late teens or early 20s at that time (I guess she's late 20s now). Her name was Absinth and I had really been trying for Absinthe but it was taken I also at the same time had made a dominator called Abscinthe but she's already been deleted (I still kind of miss her too... what'dya know... should've kept her on, she had a great concept). Anyway, I had a lot of sympathy so we arranged for him to pay for the rename by giving me a timecard code... and I came up with a name for her that I actually preferred, though that took me a couple weeks at least of thinking.

    So in conclusion - use empathy and understand the other side's feelings, rather than dismissing it as them having a too great sense of entitlement. And if it happens to you (in either direction,) spend some time seriously contemplating the character and coming up with something truly unique that fits the spirit - you will in the end possibly like it even better for being one of a kind.

Out of all the possible colors the RGB scheme can create the range of obvious "skin" colors has to be a relatively small subset of those. If the game was able to reject any attempt to input an RGB value in that restricted subset then it could potentially allow any other valid RGB color.

    This would probably not be as trivial as it sounds to implement, but it would be the only fair way to do it. With the naughty skin colors directly prevented then anyone could use any legal color they wanted at any time.

    Unfortunately skin colors are a wide range. And, you can make "nude" blue skinned or green skinned folks as well. What about only filtering the color numbers when placed on tights/body parts? Any color should be fine for trenchcoats, pleated skirts, or highly textured areas like armor, for example...
  7. Pick a whole bunch more Dev Choice low level arcs, and then make the AE "dev choice only" until level 14.

    That way you don't have to take anything out or deny anyone with the Architect Edition access.
  8. so sad to lose some of those old PMs from people who aren't around anymore... and the ability to change forum handles. Otherwise, it's a great change and looking forward to it. So long in the planning!

    Lady Jane?

    I have found a simple way to finish this mission and it seems to work on every character I try. You do need some inspirations or a stealth power or a mez resist to do it... that's about all.

    Run right past all the CoT all the way to the chest, then clear the path back to Lady Jane. Then lead her to the chest. Mission will complete. You will probably never even see the ambushes.

    There's 2 different spots the chest can be in, so you might have to run past CoT twice. You can fight your way back as long as you run past the group that has Lady Jane, if that's easier. On squishies without stealth powers, I just use a purple or breakfree or both when running past her captors.

    Also, Romeo was a Montague and Juliet was a Capulet, not the other way around.

    This leads into a further question. If they did go with this last choice, which sets would they have to choose from? Would they be able to choose any epics? (Doubtful?)

    Would it be like this (In terms of Access to Epic sets):
    Brutes = Scrapper
    MM = Tankers
    Corruptors = Defenders
    Dominators = Controllers
    Stalkers = Blasters????

    That would create all SORTS of unbalance.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    I think it would go (for balance??) like this:

    kheldians and blasters <--> dominators
    masterminds <--> controllers
    stalkers <--> scrappers
    brutes and arachnos <--> tankers
    corrupter <--> defender

    Those pairings aren't functional equivalents but sort of closest to powerset coverage equivalents in terms of what they get in the auxiliary/patron power pools.

    maybe since its an expansion there will be entirely new pools (with a lot of reused powers) including auxiliaries for villains, patrons for heroes, and those who "go rogue" will have only the auxiliaries to choose from and can't get patron pools (on both sides).
  11. My main concern is that I like the names of my characters. So to me they're all "cool" but the one that has maybe the most obvious appeal in cleverness or whatever when read may be "Midwinter Daydream"

    I am going to follow the rules here and not actually mention any other character names I have. There's a lot that are 'just what I wanted' or very superhero sounding and a couple that people go "I can't believe you got that" when they see it (these latter are mostly the ones I made right when Villains came out, when a lot of names were freed up).

    Edit: I will mention one name that I don't have anymore because apparently it was so cool to one guy that he paid me to change it so he could have it. That was my virtue fire/dark corrupter. Her name used to be 'Absinth' and now is Abyssinth (which, once I thought of it, I liked better anyway for the demonic corrupter type she is).
  12. I think it would be kind of NCSoft to give the Australians as much game time as they can right now... since their government is frothing to ban all online games because of the "experiences may change during play" aspect of them... or so I read.

    It seems unlikely to go through, but who knows...
  13. we have 3 vista machines playing CoH; one of them crashes all the time, the other 2 are fine.

    One of the fine ones has onboard video.

    The one that crashes a lot has Quad core processor and Nvidia Geforce 9600 GTX video card, Asus motherboard... Vista 32... patched the hotfix and then to service pack 2, it happens less often (only every hour or two, not every 10 minutes) but still that's a lot of crashes... very annoying.

    The other one that doesn't crash has 9800 video card and dual core and vista 64.

    I will open a new thread with the hijack log and so on to see if anyone has suggestions for the one where it won't work right.
  14. "foe" is a good choice; plain English meaning of this word means pretty much the same as the jargony use of "mob" and the number of letters is the same for slow typists.

    It is also amusing that the origin of both meanings of "mob" stems from "mobile" moveable... maybe only to me

    "Critter" however is the correct jargon in CoH for "stuff that fights" whether allied or opposed or neutral. Even non mobile, attackable or defendable objects are "critter" I believe.

    "Mob" is correct jargon in many MUD based MMOs like Everquest and world of warcraft. It can safely be left there with other terminology that is imported without regard for applicability to CoH.
  15. [ QUOTE ]

    I did have one question about the winning design, though. Text is 'Which AT are you?'

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Text currently reads: "What kind of hero are you?"

    I don't think it's referring to Blaster/Controller/etc. Maybe Origin, maybe just "there are all kinds of heroes" generally.

    I also think it will be great to make all the shirt designs, especially current days when it's so easy to get custom shirts.

    Good choices of winners.
  16. Anyone know if it is a bug that they all now say "nice day, isn't it?" instead of the variety of things they used to say? Or was it a change made for some reason that they are planning to keep?
  17. Retrogression

    So Confusing

    It took me 2 1/2 years to get my first level 50 heroes. Now I got my 5 year veteran badge and I have a level 50 villain, too, and another hero very close (48 I think). And several in late 30s.

    Some of us just like variety!
  18. I think a thug MM team would be excellent. The leadership from the enforcers will stack (I think) to everyone's minions, giving them a lot of toughness.

    You said you don't want to mess with toggles, Storm and Dark each have a toggle, but you could skip those powers.

    Pretty much any combination of secondaries will work, as long as you don't all get the same one. One should probably get force fields; another should get either storm or pain, so they can buff the force fielder versus sleep. Then the forcefield will protect you all from mezzes. (traps has a similar forcefield so that would be an alternative if no one wants forcefields)
  19. [ QUOTE ]
    I've said this so many times that I should just make a cut and paste for it: A rising tide lifts all boats.

    Back in the day when Everquest ruled the waves, new games were coming online every year and the same people were always crying "This new game is where it's at. EQ is dead. Anybody who disagrees is just a blind fanboi."

    Lo, all these years later, EQ is still around. Ultima Online is even still around.

  20. You can lock your computer with a password. That's the best way to keep family members off it when you go on a bio break.

    Different operating systems do it differently, but they all have the option.
  21. You all do know that some games have pretty much done just that, right? Limited players (or tried) to one character.

    I have never really been able to enjoy those games though
  22. [ QUOTE ]

    Anyway, I believe you can begin buying DOs at 14

    [/ QUOTE ]
    You can buy level 15 DOs and slot them at level 13.

    [ QUOTE ]
    Sometimes I wish you could just shut off your xp and go grind some mobs for a while to make the inf you need.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    You can turn off your xp anytime you want, now. It's in Options.

    Also: use your 300,000 now to put in bids on level 20 common IOs that you will need and you can slot them at level 17. Put bids of 10k on a few level 15 IOs that you can slot right away, and 16k on the level 20 IOs. Check them every day or 2, you should have quite a few when you hit 17. Keep buying till your slots are full or you hit 20, then start bidding around 20k on 25s. It takes a day or two at that price but you should get most of em. accuracies and end modifications cost a little more (double the offer), mezzes and debuffs and fly/run way less (half it). If you accidentally get too many, set extras for sale for about 10x what you paid.

    Then when you hit 22 you won't have to buy as many SOs, the level 20 IOs will be almost as good and keep on working.
  23. why "TheOcho" and not "ElOcho"? Envious of Avatea's ability to speak multiple languages, Mod08 forced two of them to combine in the new redname?
  24. I got my son a refurbished computer from Dell Outlet about 2 years ago (when his old Celeron would no longer function well enough to get by on), and it still runs CoH very well. $400. Look for ones around that price point, get a video card and at least 2 GB of memory and Vista Home Premium and see what you can get.
  25. Is it possible it was more copyright infringement? after all there's the novel Monstrous Regiment about recruiting er... gender ambiguous soldiers... I do not think it probably violated that either, but maybe between the two issues they figured it came too close to two lines to be given benefit of doubt?
