Quote:After four pages of reading, I haven't seen this question answered: what the heck is a dead realm? It's so crazy that the dead realms have all the good names reserved still and yet theyre never active.
Is he talking about the under populated servers? If so, why would those servers get blamed for the problem? I would tend think the more active servers would also have a higher number of names in use among both active and inactive accounts. Seems like they'd free up a lot more names with a sweep of Freedom than Pinnacle. (Not that I agree any servers need to get swept for names) -
Well that makes sense, seeing as they made it into a perk for VIPs. I thought they might have dropped the requirement with Freedom but I wasn't sure.

Quote:The epic archetypes are Peacebringers, Warshades (for heores), Arachnos Soldiers and Arachnos Widows (for villains). They used to unlock when you got a character to level 50, but I think they changed it to level 20. Free players can't unlock them at all unless they buy the unlock from the market, VIPs still unlock them as normal.Okay, I'll bite. What exactly is an epic archetype?
I ask this being someone who is VIP (paying for membership) and someone who returned after a long absence (who used to know the game well). So I'm not being snide or facetious. I'm curious what they are.
As a side note, I've played this game for 3-1/2 years and I've never rolled an epic archetype. Not one. -
Quote:Well, being new and a freebie at that, he's probably never played an epic archetype before and knows nothing about them doesn't know how they compare to the free archetypes (or even if he'd enjoy playing the epics at all), but he already knows that the game isn't worth playing without them.Knowing nothing about the game, "being new", how do you qualify that remark?
So I suspect he's pretty adept at jumping to conclusions. -
The content that you dismiss as "filler" also includes some one-off missions that some people acually enjoy. It's not all pointless fed-ex missions and streets hunts, there are some actual door missions in there, and some are pretty cool. Of the non-arc missions, only the ones that award badges are included in Oro.

Personally, I've always been a big fan of Silver Age heroes and I'd love to see a new Golden/Silver Age costume set. You can definitely create Golden and Silver Age style costumes using the existing tools in the costumer creator--I've been doing it for years. But we could use some more options for classic costume pieces, and even more importantly, I think many of the original pieces need a face-lift to bring them up to par with the newer sets (high on that list are masks that look like worn material instead of just painted-on).
But I'm not holding my breath waiting for a new Golden/Silver Age costume set. There are lots of themes and costume styles that are not represented at all (or only maginally) by the current costume options, and it seems like introducing something new and shiny will almost always take priority over upgrading something familiar and old. It's the same with game content--there are lots of zones and story arcs that could use a make-over, and while a few do get revamped, more often they are left alone in favor of introducing new zones and story arcs. Same with adding a whole new costume theme rather than improving upon an existing theme.
What I hope they might do is add a few new Golden/Silver Age costume parts as freebies and save the new and shiny costume themes for the paid sets. That I could see happening. -

Just wanted to update the situation.
This week I replaced the video card. A good friend (also a CoH player) had recently upgraded his video card and let me have the spare. His old card is in good working order and is actually comparable to the one I had. I installed it and so far no problems. Looks like it was the card.
Fortunately, my friend has no need of the old card and will let me keep it as long as needed, so I won't need to purchase a new one myself.
Thanks for the help and advice. -
Interesting, the Print Screen button on the keyboard has always worked for me for taking screenshots in City of Heroes. The image file even ends up in my CoH screenshot folder. I didn't even know there was a /screenshot command in the game.

Quote:Actually, there are still plenty of spawns like that around--they're all over Atlas, Kings, Steel Canyon, Talos, etc. I'm not sure why you think it's just limited to a "few legacy spawns," because that's nowhere near to the truth. Just last week I created a new character and because I was bored with running the intro missions so many times, I ran around Atlas park defeating Hellions that were mugging people until I hit level 5.I actually miss making a new hero, entering Galaxy City and patroling the streets near the hospitol, rescuing citizens from thug activity like muggings. Saving that lady who was getting assaulted by some purse snatcher, and then having her run up to me to thank me after just never got old. I would save people while traveling between missions, against grey cons, just because it was the right thing to do, even if it is just a silly game. It was HEROIC. It was what originally made my wife start playing the game, she watched me save a few helpless ladies and wanted to "save people too". There's still a few legacy spawns around town that you can still do that in, but really those types of little things have gotten left behind in favor of stopping the aliens from destroying the multiverse. But I suppose I am just being nostalgic.
I agree that the Devs shifted the balance of rewards (particulalry XP) more in favor of missions vs street sweeping, but if you were defeating greys, then it doesn't sound like xp was ever much of an issue for you when it came to the fun of saving people. No reason why you can't still be doing that. -
The Magician is the last contact in the Night Ward main storyline. Trilogy has a "story" arc of sorts, but it's completely unrelated to anything else. I don't think there was much of a story to Fireball's missions, but they're not repeatable either. Cromwell and Lionell are random repeatable missions.

Quote:Okay, I'll ask it, because I don't see where anyone else has: If you're such a good healer, why do you need 4 rez powers?I have 8 different ways to heal somebody, 4 different ways to rez them
I don't ask that to be snarky. My point is this: your build seems to have a lot of redundancy.
I'm sure you are a good healer. Heck, with 8 heals, it would be hard not to. That's part of the redundancy right there. I know many CoH players say "you don't need a healer in this game," or that "healing is overrated compared to defense, etc." I'll gladly admit that healing can be very useful, and I'll always find a player with lots of heals welcome on my teams. But 8 heals? I can't ever remember a team that needed that much healing to stay alive. And since you have more than enough healing to keep the team alive, why do you need 4 rez powers? Sure, one or maybe two for the occasional "oopsie", but 4? All that over kill is limiting the usefulness of your character. If 99% of the time you could keep the team alive with 5 heals and 2 rezs (and that should be plenty for even a decent healer), that's 5 addtional powers you could have taken that would help your team in other ways.
Now I did see where you mentioned this is a concept character. I respect that. I also have concept characters that others might consider "gimped." And I've teamed with players with "gimped" concept characters, and had fun doing it. But when you design a character around a concept and make build choices that are less than optimized, you have to accept the consequences of that decision. There are no "wrong" builds, but there are builds that are definitely less effective than others and will have more difficulty achieving certain rewards. That's just the way it is. You may have to decide what's more important: staying true to your concept, or accomplishing those goals that require a more balanced character.
Fortunately, the dual build system offers a decent compromise, and I'm glad to hear you were able to get the badge by using a 2nd build. I think that's the best solution because it allows you to play the build you want most of the time, but switch in those instances where your concept just isn't working.
Quote:What is Bullseye's power? Mr. Fantastic? Professor Xavier? What is Green Arrow's power? The Flash? Mr. Freeze? In the comic books, there are a lot of examples of "one-trick ponies," those heroes and villians who make their names on the fact that they can only do one thing, but they do it very, very well. -
Quote:Sadly, neither of these steps made a difference. It could be, but kill your Steam related processes first and see what that does. Also, see about updating your Audio drivers if there are newer ones.
Quote:I wouldn't expect any problems up to about 5 years if its running as recommended by AMD/NVidia.
If its heavily overclocked its life will be reduced.
Poor system cooling could also adversely impact it.
A buildup of dust could also cause the GPU fan to lose efficiency or even in extremis fail. -
Quote:That has been my suspicion, unfortunately. I've had this computer for 3.5 years and I've already had to replace a dying video card once--is it normal for video cards to have such a short life?If the game was running stable for you and then it starts doing this, the problem is likely to be the video card going bad.
Thanks, I'll try that and see if it helps. -

Hello,
I've been wrestling with this problem for a while and I think it's time I asked for some help.
City of Heroes has been crashing on me sporadically. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to when or where it crashes, and it can happen after playing for 2 hours or just 5 minutes. Each time it happens, the screen freezes for a few seconds, then goes black, and then I get this error message:
"The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver due to exceeding the Windows Time-Out limit and is unable to continue. The application must close."
I have updated my drivers but to no avail. Here is the CoHelper file:

Quote:Which is all the more reason for the GMs not to get into the whole headache of trying to figure out how the copyright laws apply to a specific player-created character. Especially when you consider that a quick trip to the tailor and a quick edit of a character's description can easilly turn "Public Domain Hercules" into a copycat "Marvel Hercules." It's much simplier and safer to simply not allow it.I think another part of it is that it is unclear as to what might be copyrighted or trademarked with that character and who might have such a claim. Marvel has a Hercules, DC has a Hercules, Disney has a Hercules, there have been multiple other Hercules characters in comics and similar media over the years.
I know some players think their parady characters are okay because parody is a stated exception to copyright law--and that argument would probably hold up in a court of law. But this isn't a court of law, it's the court of the CoH DMs, and they're not going to spend a lot of time trying to decide if something falls under the paradoy clause or not--if it looks questionable, they're going to squash it, not take it to the company lawyers and have them review it.
That's why I think the guy who got his Hercules approved by CS was probably the exception, while the guy whose Thor was genericized is more likely the rule. As for the guy who had his Havok, Tombstone, et al genericized, that's even more in keeping with CoH policy, as I don't believe there's any Public Domain argument to back those up in the first place. -

Well, if you include the lore, he also helped the Nazis conquer & rule America (and the entire world). And tortured some Portal core scientists to death to find out about Primal earth.
-
Quote:On that note, what about Reichsman? I don't see that he's been mentioned yet, but surely he gets major evil points just for being a Nazi. Not to Godwin your thread, but doing what you're told hasn't been close to a legitimate excuse in ages.
Of the villains mentioned by the OP, I would have to pick Protean. In the Freedom Phalanx novel, he gloats over having once killed a child he was holding as a hostage in a stand-off against Manticore. -
Quote:Well, if he actually had his Hercules approved, then good for him. Maybe going straight to customer support for a ruling was a good move. Or maybe he was just lucky. I remember some time ago a player complained that his "Thor" was genericized even though his character was closely based on norse mythology rather than the marvel comic hero. I think any time you choose a name that is already is use in a published work, you have to assume there is a certain risk it will be genericized no matter how strong a case you have that you are not violating any copyright or trademark. The GMs are not experts in the finer points of copyright law and are going to tend to play it safe when making a call.Actually, I'm fairly sure that player has been reported and has even contacted CS about the character himself. He's discussed it before.

Quote:I think, as a general rule (and quite possibly as a policy), most if not all GMs will automatically genericize any name that is identical to an existing comic character, even if the character's appearance and other details do not match that of the copyrighted character. Now, if your character's name is similar to or incorporates an existing character's name as part of a longer name (i.e, Total Apocalype, the Phantom Demon), I think it will depend on each GM's personal judgement whether or not it looks like you're infringing on a copyright. The names you've listed as having been genericized seem to follow a pretty consitent patern long set by the GMs.This.
I really don't think there is a standard rule. It seems to really depend on the GM. These are some of the names they've genericed on me:
-Apocalypse
-Tombstone
-Sentinel
-Wildcat
-Havoc
-Phantom
and a few others I can't think of.
I had most of these names for months and played them lots. None of them remotely resembled any comic counterpart but I still got smacked with the generic bat. Meanwhile they let some guy keep the name Hercules for various reasons. Anyway, I guess the best bet is to google the name you may want to use and see if there's a hit; if not then you should be good to go.
As for the player who was "allowed" to keep a character named Hercules, I'm guessing that was a player who was simply never reported and who would've been genericized if he had been. Even though it's true that no one owns the copyright on names like Hercules, Thor, comic publishers do own their specific depictions and interpretations of these mythological figures, and I assume the GMs are going to error on the side of caution and genericize any name that's already in use in the comics. -
Quote:I actually did all the Night Ward story arcs on a character that was over level 35. He was level 37 when he started Mistress Maria and Montague's arcs. He finished up the Magician's arc at 39 and then did Fireball and Trilogy.http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Fireball
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Trilogy
These 2 contacts in Night Ward are level 30-50. All others are 30-35. I did these 2 story arcs on 1 character so far and he was about level 43 at the time I did them and yes not through Ouroboros Flashback.
Looks like a few others have confirmed that these contacts have a greater level range than listed in Paragonwiki. The zone itself is has a level range of 31-35 (my level 37 never encountered mobs equal to his level outside of missions) so maybe that's the source of the confusion? -
Well, this is the first year in 27 years that I won't be attending SD Comic-Con. Knowing that CoH won't be there is just one more reason not to be too disappointed about not going (the long lines, huge crowds, and inflated cost being the other reasons).
