I need some help with screenshots. :/

I know this has probably been asked a thousand times, and it's not like I tried once, gave up and came here. I have been trying to figure it out for a while, and have looked up tons of ways to get screenshots. What happens is, I hit the print screen button, or whatever it is called. Then, I search for the City of Heroes file, under C and then under Program Files. But it's not there, or at least not directly. Its under Ncsoft, which is fine I guess. But when I finally make my way to the City of Heroes file, there isn't even a file for Screenshots.

I had some cool( or at least I think they are lol) ideas for my Character, but I can't get a screenshot. Anybody have a solution? I'd be very grateful.

I have actually tried this, but maybe I am just being an idiot, haha. It just doesn't seem to save the screenshots to the City of Heroes file. Everything I have read suggests that I should have a screenshot file within, but I don't.
Thank you for the suggestion, though.

Are you actually hitting the Print Screen button? If so, you're doing it wrong, try typing /screenshot.

Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.

I think I was, that being said I am prone to mistakes. I'll definitely try typing it in.

Hey! It worked! Awesome, thank you so much for the help!

Another thing to double-check is to go to \Options, and check under the Keymapping tab to see if your printscreen button has been reassigned to some different function.

The way you worded it...

Are you trying to take a screenshot of the costume/tailor window? The print screen key copies what you see on your monitor to the clipboard when you press it. If worse comes to worst you could do that and paste it into a program like paint and save it yourself there. (I forget if you're able to screenshot the tailor window using the game's screenshot function.)

Interesting, the Print Screen button on the keyboard has always worked for me for taking screenshots in City of Heroes. The image file even ends up in my CoH screenshot folder. I didn't even know there was a /screenshot command in the game.

Sounds like you have dueling registry install info. The old default installation was to C:/Program Files*/City of Heroes/*, but now, with the new Launcher it is under NCSoft/*.

You can muck with the Registry entries to fix things (power users only). Or, you can uninstall the program and reinstall it to make all the registry entries point to the same default directories.

But first, find out where it's being saved. Do a hard drive search for *.jpg files in the past few days. It should be showing up somewhere.

The shear lack of information about what he was screenshotting(?) or his OS or if he's running it as admin is why I tossed the ParagonWiki Screenshots link at him. It's quite comprehensive, he didn't sound like a newbie so I figured he'll be able to find the answer himself. It was a drive by answer, didn't have time to play 20 questions.

This is best done with CoH windowed, and can be done at any time in the game, even in the tailor.
Alt+PrtSc
Open MsPaint
Ctrl+v or Edit -> Paste (or Home -> Paste)
Save to a file you want

Instead or Ms Paint, I prefer to use Irfanview or Faststone imageview so I can crop and label. Hope this helps!

We seem to have a bunch of different answers here, so I thought I'd consolidate:

1. The printscreen button should send a screenshot to your City of Heroes/Screeshots folder. (This works fine for me).

2. If it doesn't, /screenshot works as a typed command.

3. If it doesn't, you may want to check keybinds under options to see if the printscreen button is assigned properly.

4. If it doesn't, you might have a conflict between where City of Heroes used to install @C:/Program Files/City of Heroes, and where it currently installs under /NCSoft. (see Zombie's post).

5. if it doesn't, it might be that you're the character selection screen, or the costume alteration screen, or a few other screens in the game (such as the powers/slotting screen) which do not send a screenshot anywhere when you hit printscreen (or type /screenshot either I assume). To get around these you need to printscreen and then paste into another program. (I use Irfanview). It might help if you are in windowed mode or have alt-tabbed so that the game is being treated as another window.

I've had a bind (that admittedly I don't use much) that if I used shift-sysrq (same as the printscreen button,) it would first turn on the UI (/screenshotui 1), then take a screenshot (/screenshot) then turn the UI off for the next regular shot (/screenshotui 0.)

Just for clarity:
Any screen that uses a full-screen UI cannot be captured by CoH's built-in screenshot function. This includes, but is not limited to, The login screen, the server and character select screens, the character creation screen, and the tailor. Basically, if you can access the chat box, you can take a screenshot. If you CAN'T access the chat box, you need to use your OS or a third-party screen capture software.

Since nobody mentioned it yet: City of Heroes seems to have an issue with some keys on 88-key keyboards (ie, laptops with no number pad). I have never used a laptop where CoH recognized the backslash key for keybinds; it typed the right character into the chat box, but if I went into the keybinds menu, it registered as ] . I've also had at least one laptop that refused to acknowledge the PrtScreen button inside CoH. That particular laptop had no F1, F2, etc keys; I used them by pressing Fn+1, Fn+2, etc.
If you are using a laptop, and your keyboard has no numberpad, and DOES have a Fn key, go into the keybind menu, and bind a new key to the function you want. It may help.
