I was on a break from gaming. I was pretty irritated with DAoC with the release of ToA. I put so much in that. Anyhow, I saw this game come out and waited to see what the reviews were like.
Come 4th of July weekend for 2004, I picked up a copy. I kept to myself and didn't want to team with people. Even back then it was a great way for me to decompress from the day and wanted to stay solo. And this is why my start date and forum join date are so far apart. Anyhow, this game was just great for me to get away from it all, and especially there were no elves or magic spells, etc. anywhere. Some people seem to don't believe me that my first toon created (DM/regen scrapper) tooks months to level since she solo'd to 39 in the olden days.
Then I ran into the Terra AV arc and couldn't defeat the AV. So I sucked it up and asked a player in Talos if he could help me. He was a dark/dark def. The AV fell shortly afterwards. After thanking him for his help, I rolled a D3 def, who is still one of my favorite toons today.
It took 9 months to get to 50 with my scrapper. I couldn't imagine it taking that long nowadays. But thanks to the dark def, whom I can't remember the name anymore, I got more into teaming and such.

Oooooo, should hopefully be on at that time. Even got an MM on blue and red!
Wait a minute....did you change your sig??? -
Quote:That is close to what I think. The metric I have seen is the "team" XP/time, where the team component is making the AT obsolete. And I think that's the problem with claims that something is obsolete. It usually revolves around unstated assumptions that a given performance metric like solo XP/time is the whole reason people build characters. It's not. Not does it need to be.
I wish I would have kept the screen shot, but once I teamed with a player that kept calling out numbers in group chat. I haven't teamed with this person before (and a few others of team didn't either) and it was asked what are the numbers. It was the XP per unit time (min? I can't remember) they were tracking - not sure how they did that. And the player was letting us know we were (way) off the optimal mark. Anyhow, this player only lasted one mission to go find a better team, even though no one died and we were a pretty good mix of ATs.
This is where my reading of obsolete ATs comes from. I have encountered (as probably everyone in this thread I bet) times where players are more focused on the rewards, like merits or XP per time invested, rather than just teaming. Oh well, back to the thread! -

Quote:Sigh...you are right Forbin. How silly of me. That is how it is going to be.Oh it's going to be like that is it? Okay. I haven't seen any evidence that people use PvP in over 3 years. By that I mean that I haven't seen anybody actually PvPing in front of me, If I haven't witnessed them actually PvPing I can't count them as PvPers. That means using your own logic there are no PvPers in the game to my knowledge, and if there are no actual PvPers then there is no reason to waste any resources on PvP content.

Quote:To clarify, I can recall one player using chat and emotes before attacking every group or when inviting players (he was the leader) do anything that resembles RP. I am aware that the 10 players around me in Talos WW could all be RPers, but they haven't done it in front of me, so I can't count them. So, recapping, 1 player I have seen RP. That's it. If others exist, I haven't seen it.Point being, saying you've "only seen" x many RPers... you've probably seen more than you realize.
Anyhow Bill, to make clear my point: I support the suggestion of a dev devoted to PvP. Some poster thinks RP should have a dev and I disagree. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. -
Quote:FWIW, I could count on one finger the number of RPers I have seen. I know no one has numbers and I don't doubt they exist. However, my point to the other poster was that PvP had a strong (emotionally if not in numbers) playerbase and they have established PvP content, listed above, that the devs could build upon. It could add a new dimension to this game - PvP mayhem or TFs, new bonuses to earn, and other suggestions put out before. Why does one have to be "more," they're not exclusive to each other. I wander in and PVP - though I can't say that community's ever seemed large. RP, I see everywhere - including during PVP.
But RP?
I don't emote to complete TFs. I don't "walK" to travel between missions or while I am crafting IOs or shopping at the market. Buying emotes now too? If you like it, more power to you. But devoting a dev to it? I can't see any reason whatsoever. -
Quote:Really? I would love to see your numbers on this. Almost like saying they had a strong PvP playerbase pre-I13. I wonder which was more? They've already got a strong Roleplaying playerbase they could create stuff for, instead.
Quote:More emotes, interactive emotes (hugs, and such) new costume pieces, a Secret identity system, personal apartment/bases, Base design revamp, more base items, more base textures, personal nemesis systems, new travel powers and power pool customization, more power customization in general...
Base stuff - how is that RP? Enlighten me. The players I see with bases use the bins and TPers. Not a lot of RP there.
PC for RP? I am sure players that RP like using it. I use it to match colors, not to RP. My fire/rad corr has green fire because /rad is green. My emp def has red colors to match PD colors, not to RP.
Quote:More chest emblems and cape styles, costume pieces galore! new RP areas and hangouts. How about a few buildings scattered around the map with ACTUAL insides? I'd love to head down to a 1950's style diner in Steel canyon and hang out with friends while waitresses in white blouses and red poodle skirts take the orders of other patrons. Or head down into a laboratory environment near Orion labs for RP and fun. How about leaving the tops of "Green Fluid Filled Tanks" open so players can jump in for cloning RP?
Quote:They've tried and Failed to get a strong PvP presence, and have thrown money at the problem for long enough. I'd rather they moved on to another subset of the players and handed out some new toys.
There's a point where you have to cut your losses and move on to something else, rather than throwing good money after bad.

EDIT:
Rachel, on the other hand, forget it. From the last thread and how you posted, it isn't worth it. RP means nothing to me and PvP means nothing to you. -
Quote:BABs only kept facepalming because he had to explain it about a million times. He always explained, however, that he would really want to do this, but can't do it due to resource restrictions. None of the developers have expressed desire to make an underwater zone. Ever. BABs went on the record as highly disliking the idea, in fact. That's not the same situation.
Sam, I am borrowing this to answer Bill. This is what I meant here in replying to the other post. Not sure on your post. I had the impressions that the devs wanted PC - BABs even had that long FAQ on it. It all came down to resource. The facepalms I recall were the ones where a player would say something (one that sticks out is changing an "alpha" value or such is all it took) that was supposedly simple, but they had no clue on the code for the game. Yet they would defend their idea. Nothing more. I admit I could be misinterpreting you completely. -
I disagree. The resources have been put in for PvP - either in zones, arena, base raids, etc. For RP, apart from creative use of emotes or BAB doing walk in his spare time if I understand correctly, it doesn't add to the contect of the game - like PvP mayhems could or the changes from I13 PvP players want. I loved base raids and would love to see them come back. So PvP has a lot of potential IMO whereas adding more RP stuff doesn't.

Just dropping in to say Rikti O's! (looks at sig)
To the OP, I think it would be interesting alternative also. -
Quote:In general, no. Like in Talos, I can barely move in that zone without have a tip fall from some gray. The one time I had trouble was recently in IP. An STF was forming and I had about 15 min to kill. So I hunted around Stateman's ship. Not a single tip dropped. Run the first STF mission, and filled up on tips. For me, going to avoid IP from now on for tips lol!I run one paper or radio and they begin to fall...are peeps having a hard time getting them to drop?
My favorite way now for red side my corr. I went to Shark and was about to street sweep when I saw the GM and a long line of mobs behind him. I dropped a coupleof AOEs in the line and a few seconds later, 3 tips filled. Easiest it has been for me so far. -

Quote:I don't recall those "facepalms" for PC about it being done or not. The devs sounded like they wanted it done and knew the players really wanted it, but lacked of resources at the time.I just wish I had dollar for all the face-palms that were flung about back when the talk was power customization.
But I do remember the countless posts from players, who after taking like 1 semester of BASIC in college, saying it was so easy to change like one variable in lines of code and *poof* the colors of the rainbow are yours to use. -
Appreciated the feedback. Interesting discussion on balance! The future should be interesting as to how ATs will settle out.
-
Sorry Voo I missed last night. Got busy with some stuff and next thing I knew it was 10.
Will try to watch for future tries! -
Quote:It seems obvious that people who really wanted to play some villain ATs but who did not want to play that game, would get the opportunity they had been longing for once I18 came out.
I agree it would be interesting to see the long-term trend, but I don't know if the devs will ever release that info. It would be kind of a cool thing to have them tell us the population state of the ATs around February.
That's a great observation. From some other reading, it looks like more experimentation is going on for traditionally red ATs to start out gold.
I wonder what that means for early red side. Some where I read a player would start blue for "blue" toons or gold for "red" toons. Would Mercy and PO get deserted? IME, I practically spent no time in them. It was easy to get up to lvl5/6 in Mercy, jump to PO, run some papers/mayhem (sprinkle street sweeps in both) and be at lvl10 and off to CAD and beyond. -
Ugh, horrible, horrible memories of ToA when it came out to DAoC. Swimming was one of the reasons I quit after years of playing. I really loved the RvR there. For me only, I would be happy to never see another underwater zone. But if people want it, then it should be done right.
-
Interesting, I always thought it was this way. I run tip missions a lot now. And I get 5 the 1st day, then on the 2nd day, I get my 5, then the morality tip drops (even inside the 5th tip mission). I have never considered it part of the 5 tips but something different. Maybe flagged as a different type of tip or one that can drop only if the tip bar is filled?

Thanks very much! I got thinking on this the other day when I joined an STF. Some one commented that we were all hero ATs and they haven't seen that in a while. I was thinking it has been only a little over a month since GR lol!
Anyhow, I agree it may be still too early too tell. If anything the one thing I am noticing is the team chemistry at lower levels isn't as smooth yet, but that should come in time. -
As I recall, there were numerous threads on such&such AT becoming obsolete after GR came out. Just curious, but from my limited view on Victory, I am seeing pretty much every AT in mixed teams. I always thought people will play what they want to play. Tankers will tank, brutes will be brutish, defenders defend those dastardly corruptors, and so forth.
Anyone else seeing this or are some of the predictions coming true? Too early? -
Say it with me: Praetoria
Anyhow, I have leveled one toon (brute) through Resistance arcs up to Penelope Yin, and went blue side. Now starting a toon (stalker) going Loyalist, but undecided if blue or red yet.
And now for the rambling!!!
All in all, the zones and stories are great. Mission designs are on the surface good, but have annoying features that don't make sense. Just how many of those missions have you find the mission exit? There was one mission I had to escort some one to the exit door to complete and the next objective was to find the mission exit - are you kidding? I am standing right next to it. Couldn't we just have a mission complete exit button come up instead?
The mobs are very interesting, esp. the ghoul ones. I would love some of the graphics like their police force mobs with those shield like power auras.
The solo only missions also interupt the flow for teaming.
And what is with the multiwave ambushes? I know Fitness will go inherent, but some of those were just too long and gasping for END and out of inspirations was not fun.
I didn't like zowies.
I did like contacts that disappeared when done (like that Seer one - that was a great arc, but seriously, mobs with both psi and sonic attacks?).
Now to your questions. Until they expand off-line SG invites and open up to 50, I won't be leveling any more toons in Praetoria and just start red/blue, depending on the AT. It is just a pain to be "virtually stuck" in a set of zones and can't jump in and join other stuff. Plus lack of other stuff (paper missions / TFs / diff settings) makes it not as fun. How I wish what they implemented on gold side could be rewritten into blue/red missions? It was challenging and required some new tactics. Egads, that AH too. I just emailed any stuff I got to another toon to sell. It was horrible going into that.
I like the mix up of ATs. I think we are moving into a new era of team make up and letting players try things we couldn't before.
Okay, enough blabbing. I am sure there is more. -
I am curious how SJ would work - you could probably jump up fast, but wouldn't you float down?
