I'm posting to get an idea of what the current consensus is on the new Poison Trap from the /Poison set. Is it useful? I don't have it on my Thugs/Poison now and I'm considering adding it.
Does it take procs and are there useful procs for slotting in it? Is it auto-hit or does it require accuracy slotting?
From looking at the City of Data info, it now looks like a brief Hold (mag 3), with a chance for additional Hold (also mag 3), a chance for a minor endurance drain, a recovery debuff, and minor damage (doesn't look like damage over time as far as I can see). I think the Sleep is gone from the power, which is just as well.
It's got a pretty short animation time and the interrupt is now gone.
The only useful aspect for my Thugs/Poison would seem to be the hold unless I happen to be teamed with someone who can sap. However, the hold might be worth it, especially since it should stack with Paralytic Poison for holding bosses. -
I think this set is really shaping up well. I can't wait until it's done, and it'll be a definite purchase for me. I especially look forward to the jet packs!
(I am kind of puzzled by the Detail 2 aspect of the Bubble Helmet. I am not fond of this new trend. It seems really limiting. First Carnie Masks and now this. Is there a reason to put these in Detail 2 instead of Detail 1? Or why not put them under Special Helmets along with the Brain in a Jar?)
Edit: okay, maybe Detail 2 makes more sense for the Bubble Helmet so that the Detail 1 pieces are available under the helmet, though the Carnie Masks remain confusing to me. Is it not possible to have the Bubble Helmets just be a different head type? That way you could exclude clipping beards and such. -
Rubberlad,
My experience does not match HT_Ingram's, but I do think that Victory does not have a strong tradition of DFB runs, especially redside. I suspect you're a member of Victory Badges and Victory Forum, but I'll recommend them anyway. They are generally good places to scare up team business, and make sure to stress the badges and good xp for lowbies if you start to advertise. If you're looking from 5pm to midnight Eastern Time, you'll stand a better chance to get folks to come along.
Also, these forums are a good place to set things up in advance. ShaylaDominatrix advertised some DFB runs just the other day. Those might be blueside, but it might be worth talking to her about it: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=283473
In fact, you may want to become the go-to guy for redside DFB. Schedule a weekly series of runs, and I suspect you'll be able to get folks to come along, especially if you advertise in several places.
I think Victory is typically a friendly inviting place, and once folks know these are being run, you'll see more folks doing them. -
My first rolled characters were tankers. It took me a few tries to figure out that tankers just weren't for me. Then followed a string of Gravity/FF controllers and TA/Archery defenders. Leveling was slow and alts were plentiful. I had no main character.
I had joined in Issue 11, and when Issue 12 rolled out, I really wanted to make a Crab Spider. By that time I had 2 high level characters -- a level 32 DB/Fiery Aura brute and a level 30 Ice/Cold corruptor. I had to choose which one to try to get to 50 so I could unlock VEATs, and I chose the corruptor. I thought teams would want the buffs and debuffs and that he'd be more popular than the brute for invites. I played the hell out of Jakob Frost to level him up. I set aside my altitis because I wanted that Crab Spider!
Jakob Frost was my first 50. My Crab Spider was my second 50, but by then I'd really figured out how to play my corruptor. He's been my main ever since. When I started playing much more on Victory than Virtue, I moved Jakob Frost right on over, where he is today. He's my badger, my go-to character when times are tough and critters need debuffed and killed. He was the first character I really spent money on IO sets for. When incarnate content came out, there was no doubt who'd be doing it first.
He didn't initially have much of a personality, but he's really become a recognizable character to me now. I've written a short story about him for a contest, and really enjoyed doing so.
He became my main by accident, and because I wanted a VEAT, but he's remained my main because I really enjoy playing him. -
Congrats everyone! That's fantastic!
I'm a little jealous that I was traveling and couldn't be there, but I'm much happier for you guys!

While I never knew Jacob, I certainly know several people who are feeling this loss. I'm very sorry to hear he has passed. His family and friends are in my thoughts.

Do you wait until you've completed an arc that awards Entrusted with the Secret before ever going to Ouroboros? You virtuously avoid entering Ourboros until then? How do you typically earn it?
I know there are a number of paths there, but villainside I typically do Marshal Brass' arc (available at 15) and heroside I do the Faultline arcs. I don't remember what level or which specific contact offers the Entrusted badge in Faultline, but maybe you could lobby the devs to delay make Ouroboros available at 15 instead of 14 redside? That would remove the ache of knowing that others are using underhanded methods to get to Ourboros a level before you could hope to do so by playing in a more honest manner. -
Quote:Thanks, Captain Electric, I really appreciate that.Pattern Walker and Chyll, those are some very memorable and haunting bits of writing.
Whatever Galaxy's echo means to you, I'm most impressed by the way some people take these open ends and tie them together with some very strong imaginative knots.
While I don't really RP, I do think about who my characters are and why they do what they do. I find a lot of room for creativity between what is clearly spelled out in game lore and the "blank pages" not yet bound and codified by canon. The current "openness" of the Echo is fascinating to me. -
Because when I started the thread, I said what interested me was the lore behind the Echo. I then provided some speculation on how the place might be experienced by characters within the game. Golden Girl noted that she was unaware of any mention of the Echo within game lore, and no one has contradicted that statement since. However, folks have provided really interesting ideas on possible motivations of the Menders for creating or making available this place. That sort of exploration (the meaning of the Echo for the characters who live in Paragon City) really addresses what I am interested in and what prompted me to bring it up.
-
Quote:Ah, that also fits into the Menders' stated goals. This is a cool thought, AzureSkyCiel!Actually, I think I know the reason:
It's implied in the updated Ouroboros introduction arcs that the Shivan attack on Galaxy was NOT part of the original timeline. The echo is basically a 'save file' of the original timeline, they're hoping to study it and find out what went wrong (or possibly even right) and maybe, when they get the timeline fixed, 'patch' the old Galaxy back into the primary timeline.
The ultimate goal of the menders is possibly to fix the timeline in such a way that either they never had to exist or there's next to no evidence they ever did.
Quote:As others have already pointed out, the contacts are missing, so this seems unlikely.
Or do you mean this seems unlikely because the contacts (and Brawler) being missing means that it's not actually a real full copy of Galaxy City that could be patched back in. The Echo is a flawed copy. (This would be an objection from the perspective of the character, within the context of the game-world lore, not from the perspective of the player.) -
Quote:I like that, Chyll. That actually provides a rationale for why the Menders' have created/provided access to this Echo of Galaxy City. It may not be canon, but it'll do quite nicely.I am not aware of a provided lore explanation of the Echo. (It does appear to be just a way to cheaply provide access to the previous badges.)
However, maybe it is the Menders' way of trying to hold onto a reminder of how things were before the Coming Storm came, a way to prove to heroes why the Menders' fight is important. Or, perhaps it is a reminder to themselves that, so far, they have failed.
Quote:This is poignant, and powerful. And a nice twist on using the presence of the Echo.
Nice bio.
Mender Raphael stood quietly, looking out at the vista surrounding Ouroboros. To his left, the portal to the Echo of Galaxy City sat, faint and subtle vibrations of power rippling away from it and tingling past his senses. It flared quickly, and he sighed. The young hero, Galaxy Kid, had activated it yet again.
There was strength born of the Fall of Galaxy City. Galaxy Kid and others had taken up the cause, perhaps more motivated than those that had come before. The Menders could use that.
But suffering and pain came with that new strength, as well. The Menders had to do better. Some questioned why they had created the Echo. Not Raphael. For each who said the Echo was "wallowing in failure" he knew that were those that it helped - to ease the pain of loss or as a rallying cry to strive harder. It was necessary, however painful its lessons.
But for Raphael, it inspired fear - fear that there would be many more echoes before the Storm had passed... -
Aneko and Scythus: Threadjack much? Yeesh.
Again, regardless of why the echo was created by the devs (i.e.: the decision about which of you to upset most, apparently, or perhaps it's the reason behind the decision that gets your blood boiling?), we're left with the fact that it is here. Decision made, action done.
Now that it's here, what is it? -
Quote:Thanks MisterMagpie, I really appreciate that.Aw, I like this bio. It made me sad.
Also, I'm gonna make your explanation my head canon until/if they ever explain it.
As for the discussion of why the devs created the Echo of Galaxy City: all well and good, but I don't really care why. I was just curious about the in-game explanation, the lore of it.
It'll be interesting to see what the devs do with Dark Astoria. If the zone is destroyed the way Galaxy City is, then Dark Astoria having an echo would be consistent with Galaxy's, even if the reason that the Menders made them available/created them remains a mystery. If Dark Astoria isn't really "destroyed" in the same way, then the explanation for these two echoes has to be more complicated, I think.
I wonder if the Menders might make emotionally important places/times available in order to "ground" those who travel time. And only places that resonate with a particular individual are accessible to that individual. That's an explanation that might make sense, even if it requires some handwaving to avoid questions about the lack of Overbrook (Faultline) or White Plains (Rikti War Zone). -
I don't really think the Echo is simply using a portal to time travel to before the meteor hit. Two things would seem to indicate it's not simple time travel. First, it's called the Echo of Galaxy City, not simply a portal to Galaxy City before destruction.
Second, those npcs we know to be refugees from Galaxy City are not found in the Echo. These include Jack Wolfe, Backalley Brawler, Gregor Richardson, Paco Sanchez, Shadowstar, Rebecca Brinell, and so on. Every single trainer or contact is now to be found in Atlas Park and none of them are in the Echo.
I think the Echo is populated only by those who were killed in the attack. -
I'm kind of fascinated by the Echo of Galaxy City in Heroside Ouroboros. But to be honest, I'm not exactly sure what it is, lorewise. As far as I know, there's no in-game explanation of this place that has appeared in Ouroboros. Does anyone have any information? Did the Menders feel it was important to provide a reminder of this destroyed place?
(I know that it exists for the badges and plaques, but I'm interested in the lore.)
While I don't really know what the Echo is, I have decided for myself how it works. I picture it as the echo of the 24 hours before the destruction of Galaxy City. For heroes who go there, they can interact with the echoes of those who died in the destruction. These include the various villain mobs, the staff of the hospital, pedestrians on the streets, Longbow patrolling the skies, and even the various bureaucrats in the Freedom Corps building. (Note that survivors like Backalley Brawler aren't found in the Echo.) It's like a much sadder but voluntary Groundhog Day for visitors.
This fits with a character I created when Titan Weapons came out. Galaxy Kid is a TW/EA brute, and his bio reads:
Josh Martin was an ordinary kid living with his family in Galaxy City. He was in Mr. Hardy's history class when the cataclysm happened. Josh survived and managed to help lead two of his classmates to safety before the shivans arrived.
Separated from the others, Josh was running through the new ruins of his neighborhood when he came across the body of a Rikti. The Rikti had sent this scout with a new, powerful weapon to Earth. But the scout had died when the meteor hit, and Josh was the one who grabbed the giant sword lying on the ground. When he touched it, the weapon imprinted on Josh and gave him powers and abilities beyond his belief.
Scarred by losing his family and friends, Galaxy Kid has avoided the authorities in Paragon City, and now fights against those who prey on the refugees of Galaxy City. He returns each night to the echo of his family's home, and tells his now-timeless parents and sister that school was fine. -
I came here all hopeful that someone had finally started a thread about me.
The disappointment really stings, folks.
Anyway, I'm glad the the devs have been adding the sets they have. I primarily play corruptors and brutes, and I don't feel like either has been neglected in this. Now that there are new control sets and an assault set and a proliferated controller secondary, it does feel like we're getting a nice mix. I would expect about 1/2 to 2/3s of new sets to be purchasable sets, the rest free to VIP. My guess is that we're unlikely to ever see an assault or manipulation set as a purchasable set, as both are limited to one AT. Mastermind pet sets are different, and I suspect any new ones will be for purchase.
As a VIP player who intends to remain a VIP player, I do want folks to see the benefits of subscribing, which includes both the free sets we get and the 400 monthly points towards purchasing market-available powersets. -
A happy and a merry to everyone on the development team!
-
I'm glad you got a response, Trickshooter, and glad the devs are planning on looking at the set. I'm just sad it's so far off.

Any help would really be appreciated, even if it's to say "That build is probably the best you can do with those two mediocre powersets."
One of my favorite characters is a Dark/Sonic corruptor. I've always enjoyed playing him, though he certainly has some "issues". The low damage is one issue, but the biggest problem is endurance. Now that I'm 50, I have the Cardiac Core Paragon Alpha and Ageless Destiny (when I remember to click it). These have helped a lot with the massive endurance usage.
I've been working on a new build for him. He's got really nice resists across the board, mez protection from Sonic Dispersion, and decent recharge bonuses. My problems are damage output is low still (I probably need to learn to live with this) and that I feel like I should get some level of defense from sets to stack with the -to hit of Dark Blast for more mitigation. I'm also worried that I've got a blind spot about something magical that will make him stronger.
Things I definitely want to keep:
Soul Mastery for Soul Storm and the shield
Sonic Cage with the slots for the hamis and at least one recharge (I can cage Recluse on the STF!)
Dark Pit (I know it's not great, but it's important mitigation when I exemp)
Clarity
Fly and Hover
Things I don't want:
Torrent
Blackstar
Sonic Repulsion (need I say why?)

Could it be the issue noted in this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=278002
Folks with Time Warner Cable internet service from certain geographic regions seem to be unable to consistently (if at all) connect with the game.
