I thought as much. I love Graves work on the GR soundtrack. But with regards to the new login, as nice a piece as it is, it just doesn't say 'superheroes' to me. Specifically, it doesn't say 'City of Heroes' to me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but whenever I think of superheroes they each have a signature melodic hook. Superman has John Williams' legendary theme. Batman has Danny Elfman's or Shirley Walkers melodies. Spider-Man has his "Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can". Their music is as much a part of them as their costume or their powers. Right now, I don't feel that CoH has a musical identity yet.

The closest CoH has to a signature tune is the Atlas Park fanfare, which is what I built upon when making this. It's actually a very good melody; simple iconic and most importantly very CoH.

If Graves has the opportunity to revisit the login theme in the future I'd like to see him build the piece around the AP fanfare. As a professional composer I'm sure he'd do a far better job than I ever could.

The "City of Heroes" logo (and all the the various legal gubbins) are baked into the bmp/dds itself, so the game doesn't add anything.
  3. I've noticed this too. Every time I show up in PD with one of my 50's the place is empty. I've yet to run the Underground trial.

Your analogy of badges to costume parts isn't entirely fair. For example the vast majority of badge titles, whilst cosmetic, have very low visibility, in that they're not widely known. Nor are they intrinsic to character concepts as costume parts are. Those that have any "status" tend to be the accolade badges, many of which provide tangible gameplay bonuses. Those gameplay bonuses are bound per character, as they should be, just as any badge being earned by the achievements of that single character.

Costume pieces have no effect on gameplay whatsoever, as has been stated vehemently in this thread. They also have much higher visibility and are often intrinsic to concept.

So I suggest another compromise. As I opined previously, costume unlocks should be global. So you run the ITF/grind Rulaaru bosses and unlock the costume parts globally, but the associated badge is awarded per character.

You still have to earn those costume parts, but only once.

Wait whaaa...? I've never heard of such an occurrence. Tell me more.

Back on topic, whilst "I don't like it." is a valid argument, it's not a compelling one. I'm not particularly convinced of the "Achievement" argument either. Players, and people in general, have two valuable resources which they try to spend carefully; Time and money. As it stands now, to unlock the Roman gear (or any other gated costume parts) requires time. Time to grind to 35, run the Midnighter missions and finally the ITF. Should the gear be available in the store then players have the option of saving time and spending money. Either way they'll be spending one of their valuable resources.

That being said however, the idea of having a generic Roman set in the store while keeping the Cimeroran set ITF gated is a decent compromise which I have no problem with.

  7. Aaaah, Titan Weapons...

Give me a ruddy great big axe with blades the size of dinner tables and I'll be happy.
Give me a warhammer the size of a small car and I'll be even happier.

I'll be rerolling toons in their 30's for this.
  8. /signed.

Quite frankly I've never been a fan of per character costume unlocks. The Roman gear in particular I feel requires a global unlock. I don't mind shelling out a few PP for it.
  9. Hmm, redraw as a part of the set balance was something I was unaware of. Y'learn something new everyday.

I was about to suggest that the acc bonus be suppressed when toggled, however I have a feeling there is more than just that when compensating for redraw.
  10. Redraw is a constant thorn in the side of anyone who plays weapon sets, be they melee or ranged. It hurts dps and looks odd having to redraw your weapon every spawn or so (Though Dual Pistols isn't quite so bad IMO). So, I'm pitching an idea that might help alleviate this issue.

The Weapon Toggle; put simply a toggle added to each weapon set that when activated draws your weapon and keeps it out permanently, even through animations that would usually holster/sheath it again (Sands of Mu). Should you wish not to have your weapon out all the time then you simply detoggle and weapons behave as they do currently.

Now there are some animations which would clip badly, such as stabbing yourself through the head or some such, in which case the weapon could simply switch to its 'invisible' frame and then revert instantaneously once the animation is over.

A perfect solution? Probably not, but it gives players an option.
  11. Good advice, and some that even a few veteran players ought to take heed of.

Also, to those who've pm'd me about customising their login, due to the sheer number of requests I'll be composing a cut n' paste response with the relevant info.

  15. I'll be honest, I quite like the original MK movie. Was it a great film? Of course not. But wasn't a truly bad one either. It's still the most faithful adaptation of a video game franchise to make it to the big screen.

    That sequel however... /em shudder.

I'm not predicting a disaster with the reboot. Though I'm not expecting a masterpiece. Just so long as Michael Bay isn't involved and Erhen Kruger goes nowhere near the script, I'll think we'll get something halfway entertaining.

What about the first time you heard? Y'know, like high school science class.

Physics my dear fellow. Kinetic energy is what keeps objects moving. When two objects do indeed collide, say a fist and a face, that energy is released, or rather transferred into the object with the lesser amount of energy. In the case of a punch the high velocity fist transfers its kinetic energy into the relatively stationary face.

Smashing requires quite a significant use of kinetic energy.
  17. At this stage I'd recommend getting the Hero merit. They'll give you the most bang for your buck as they can be used to nab some of the more sought after recipes. The Signature Story arc is by far the quickest way of attaining one.
Once you're 50 however, the incarnate stuff might be more beneficial, but Hero/Villain merits are still good value.
  18. Whilst I currently have freespecs and vetspecs coming out of my ears, I tend to treat them with a degree of value. I tend not to respec my toons until they're 50 or in the high 40s.

The answer is not to stop playing, but rather play more. Get a feel for the archetypes and their basic power types, get an idea of how to slot each basic type of power in order to produce a functional build. To clarify, if you play melee toons then your basic three single target attacks will likely be 6 slotted with 2 acc, 2 dam, 1 rech and 1 end. Your basic armour toggles may be 5 slotted with 2 end and 3 res or def. Start with TOs/DO/SOs until you hit 50. You can find plenty of guides detailing all the powersets and their optimal slotting right here on the forums, they're are probably the best place to start.

I tend to get an idea of where I'd like my focus to be as I level up. In which case I use Mids to plan your build accordingly. Once I'm happy with the numbers and my toon is at or near 50 only then do I respec. I fill it back out with my left over SOs and work towards acquiring the IOs I need. Sometimes the resultant 'empty' build can be more or less effective than the functional leveling build, but once I start slotting those IOs it gets better and better.
  19. I made this one a while ago (I18 I think). More appropriate cossie pieces have come out since.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Beast Wars was awesome.
  20. Humanity can produce true heroes, but we often forget that it produces truly despicable villains too. I hope Gary the Thief is robbed of his liberty.
  21. A number* of you may have been wondering where I've been these last few weeks as my activity on these forums and in game has decreased dramatically. I feel I ought to update you.

I recently acquired a new job which in addition to providing me with dosh, also eats a lot of my time. Also, my internet connection has been so poor as of late that it was unable to sustain enough bandwidth to play CoH. That too has been resolved and I'm now the proud recipient of fiberoptic broadband.

For those among you wondering when the next track of the CoH Score is coming, I will be working on something new but cannot say for sure when it'll be.

CoH Freedom is just around the corner, and with my new connection I shall be right in there for the VIP head start. I'll see you in Paragon/Praetoria/the Rogue Isles my good chums.

    * number may actually be zero.

It worked once already. No reason to think it won't work on a new audience in a different venue. Aside from PC's, and a select few NPC's, the general populace of Primal doesn't have a clue about the true nature of Cole and Praetoria.
