Google Images more or less agrees with you. The fact that so many people make automatically make the leap from bar maid to prostitute really bothers me to be honest. Although the entire Old West costume era is more or less a a fantasy in itself, much like many popular ideas about the Medieval era.

Anyway, I certainly hope no one is trying to say Paragon Studios deliberately built an Old West prostitute costume into the game. Because that's what it's starting to sound like and that is time-for-medications ridiculous.

  4. Actually, you have to work really hard to find a linkage between Magic pack and other stuff. Here is the actual timeline of releases according to ParagonWiki:

    - Wedding (Feb 2008) -- women get both tux and dress
    - Cyborg (Sept 2008)
    - Valkyrie (March 2009)
    - Magic (April 2009) -- differences in genders
    - Science (July 2009)
    - Martial Arts (Nov 2009)
    - Going Rogue (April 2010)
    - Origins (Nov 2010)
    - Animal (Feb 2011)
    - Steampunk (June 2011) -- difference in genders, first time corsets show up
    - Celestial Vet Award
    - Barbarian (Aug 2011) -- difference in genders, both with lots of flesh on display
    - Circle of Thorns (Sept 2011)
    - Halloween (Oct 2011) -- difference in genders, but no one cares
    - Gunslinger (Nov 2011) -- difference in genders
    - Fire and Ice

I may have missed a release or two in there.

To come to the conclusion that developers are "only" making sexy clothes for females you have to wait until the Magic pack to start. Then you have to intentionally overlook Science, Martial Arts, the Going Rogue pieces (Resistance and PPD), Origins, and Animal. We didn't get out first corset until the middle of this year, less than 5 months ago. In 5 months we got 6 releases. Only two* of them varied by gender, and one of those had easily as much male flesh on display. [*Halloween varied slightly by gender, but presumably isn't receiving criticism because it's harder to find a way to call it sexist.]

We don't have to speculate about whether when we get scientists we'll get half naked nurse chicks, because we got that and it didn't happen.

Tempest, tea pot, etc. Yes I want jackets for girls too but a little objectivity would go a long way. I wouldn't even be surprised to learn all 6 corsets were developed at the same time and just split up among the packs, since they all came within a very short period of each other; we waited 7 years just to get our first one.
  5. I always wanted a Cloning set a la Jamie Maddrox/Multiple Man as an armor.

(I don't particularly want it on a Mastermind, because it doesn't significantly change MM gameplay to have pets. A self-cloning melee character, though, would have clones with different attacks based on your primary, which I would love. They wouldn't get all of your attacks, just work the way the existing cloning tech does.)

Basically, I see it based somewhat on the Regen set mixed with Fire Armor (in terms of being an attack based set). Instead of a self-heal it gets a self-clone power. Your clone splits off from you and you regain a portion of your HP. A cloning character would be limited to a max of 3 clones at a time.

You can also re-absorb a clone, which is another way to heal yourself. Basically the balance of the set is deciding between damage and self healing.

The major tradeoffs would be similar to Regeneration and the fact that unlike Fire's damage powers, clones can die.
  6. IMO no AT is "obsolete" yet but a few are definitely much too close for comfort in a few cases.

I posted already that I think Tankers should get APP powers lifted from the Defender sets that allow them to be true force multipliers and function like a "Paladin" character. Or you could have a small portion of a Tanker's armor apply to all team members within 30ft, regardless of APPs (though I'd still like a healer-ish APP for Tankers just because its such a good fit for them and there are no support-lite melee ATs at all.)

I would do the reverse for Defenders: give them more personal armor in their APPs. Every APP already contains the Slash/Lethal armor edition. Pump that power up by merging it with the Fire/En/Cold/Dark/Psi armor, as if they had both powers.

(*Not the loli anime kind... ugh)

On the other hand, a LOT of this would have been bypassed had the default costume just used white leggings instead of bare legs. Neither of these parts is part of the actual Gunslinger pack. The apron-and-bow-butt-cape could just as well have been over tights. No matter what you put it over, that piece did not come with the set. Which is part of why people calling this a "prostitute" pack puts my nerves on edge. It takes two clicks to cover the legs, they are not baked bare.

ADDENDUM: I should add that, specifically, where I most often run into trouble costuming female characters in CoH is from the knees down. That's a problem of scale. Dresses have to be short for animation reasons. That leaves the length of the leg bare. The way the leggings work, only the top of the legs down get covered. The problem becomes covering the rest of the leg; you almost always have to use either boots or long tights. What you can't do is have long leggings that extend into a sensible shoe. All of this combined is what leads to the "loli" look. The dress is too short, the boots are too long. I honestly don't know a way around it. I would love full dresses and skirts but I doubt we'll see it in the lifetime of this game.

Men in big boots aren't considered to be stripperific by most people. Although I'm convinced by this thread that most posters have never actually seen a male stripper. Played for laughs, kind of, with my Pinball character.

Although IMO the joke is really on anyone who thinks they look macho in leather chaps.
  8. I personally feel the way to set Tankers apart is to make them better force multipliers. I would have approached the situation by having their APPs contain ally buffs (completely missing in any archetypes APPs), and allow them to become mild force multipliers. Powers like:

    - Deflection Shield (from Force Field)
    - Thermal Shield
    - Cold Shield
    - Fortitude
    - Sonic Barrier
    - Temporal Selection
    - Resurrect
    - Clear Mind
    - Transference
    - Forge
    - Frostwork

The powers would be modified to be less powerful than their Defender counterparts. But the main idea would be to take Tankers off the same scale as Brutes. Not by making them more survivable, but making them more able to assist the team. If that change ever happened I would be all over Tankers and not care about their lower damage, because I would feel they live up to their support role. Just being somewhat more survivable IMO doesn't set them far enough apart from Brutes.

If they don't want to go back and change all the existing APPs, just creating one "Healing Mastery" one that lets Tankers function like a "Paladin" would interest me: Fortitude, Clear Mind, Heal Other, Absorb Pain, Resurrect. But Thermal, Cold Domination, and a Time/Force Field combo also offer similar opportunities.
  9. There have also been a few issues lately with coloration bleeding into strange locations. Check out the pilgrim hat colored blue:

Basically any primary color applies to the hat, but also multiplies on the hair layer. If you color the hat pure Black, the secondary color (and the stripe on the hat) both change to more or less that color. But if you pick any other primary color than Black, the stripe takes on the secondary color, but the hair is a blend of the primary and secondary color. Hence, in this picture, purple hair from a blue primary and a red secondary color.

Not really. It just means the bottom level of performance is the similar. The peak level is still different.

What really kind of blows about [addendum: many, not all]powers that don't benefit from Domination is they get hit twice. Not only do they not get extra magnitude, they are permanently stuck with a Dominator's lower duration than a Controller.
  11. I'm surprised there isn't more love for the female hair. It's not gunslinger-y but it is a great piece IMO, and accepts two colors. I used it for my Plant Dominator, "Lotus Operandi."

Below are two very different takes on slinger-ish characters. Note that this set doesn't come with a skirt and the default is no leggings, but putting them on (because the set is in layers) significantly reduces the amount of skin on display. I'd still like a jacket, but really the "you're forced to make a prostitute stuff" needs to stop. I'm not a big fan of the thigh high boots personally, but that goes for any of them. I wish there was a big hulking pair of boots like the Praetorian police size in bulkiness, but I worked what I had from other sets.

  12. I colored him green to reduce the shock value, but for anyone who thinks leather chaps and a harness aren't stripperific, take a glance.

    [/URL]

Now you really don't want to know what happens when you turn him around.

[Not sure if this crosses the mod line; IMO it shouldn't given its around the same level of skin as the female costume. At least until you turn it around. But remove if necessary.]
  13. This thread kind of turned into the "Gunslinger" thread, so I guess that is where my next response goes. Turned out the belt was available to women. It works with armor (and over a toga, for the Tex model), so Joan was able to wear it.

You probably couldn't make a female Gunslinger from this pack, but that is an issue with labeling and not the parts themselves. I never, ever use more than a few parts from a pack in a costume. The part models themselves are pretty good. The main issue I have about the parts is the pretinting, which was addressed earlier. Otherwise I was able to start on some character models that are decidedly not street walkers.

Now if we could get the bow without a veil and no tinting. Also the apron- cape thing is great, but really needs its pre-tint removed. It is very difficult to match to other costume parts.

I am excited about the Knight pack now because hopefully it will contain some better armor for Joan. Looking for something bulky that still shows the form underneath, preferably not in a breast-window way. Fairly specific and difficult request, though. If we ever got overalls for girls, I'd use "armor tights" with overalls over them probably.

Taking a step back to halt escalation. I apologize, because my last post on this subject was snippy.

Firstly, you're right, what I wrote didn't have anything to do with clothing. I was responding to the side discussion about why there are no female members of some factions. If that somehow led to an interpretation that I was saying female clothes don't matter because men tend to die a lot then that is not what I intended.

Now, I will be honest. The tone of this discussion frustrates me for the same reasons the "fridge" talk last week did. IMO quite a few posters have thrown the "sexism" accusation around like rice at a wedding. Then when challenged on it, they coyly remark that they are just making observations and any negative feelings that result are just reflections of the reader's insecurities. I think it's unproductive for a number of reasons even if politically I sit on the same side of the fence. Mainly because calling someone or something "sexist" carries a distinctly moral tone as opposed to a simply evaluative one.

To get to the point: when you point at some specific developer, or some specific poster, and say that his or her work reflects a poor moral character, you had better damn well make sure you are going to give them a chance to respond. It would be helpful to approach the subject gingerly too. Because despite insurances from the ringleaders that they aren't doing it maliciously, passive-aggressive lectures tend to net aggressive-aggressive reactions, whether they are posted or not.

PS I want the Star belt for my Joan of Arkansas character. And if you ever call one of my female toons a prostitute, they will punch you in the face.
  15. Ice Control, for reasons I can't explain, except that no other game has anything like it.

It already did. See above for two separate comments for my "misplaced sense of victimization." Unfortunately, business as usual for that poster. Politics are not the issue here at all--we actually agree politically. What I disagree with are methods.

See especially bullet points beginning in paragraph 4.

[At least it is good that this time this is being debated within a modern genre and not the fantasy one. I've occasionally seen outraged Civilization players angry that their armies aren't mixed-gender. Think on that one for a second.]

  20. They almost certainly are not literally starting from scratch when porting each piece between models. If they were it would be easy to find many more inconsistencies between the ports, and some things need a lot more modification than others. A hat, for example, doesn't majorly change shape between Huge and Normal. I'm sure what Zel meant was just that there is a lot of work moving pieces from model to model.

I'm sorry, but extremely direct attacks being made on specific developers make me very uncomfortable. I don't think it's productive and I won't support it.
  22. The pack isn't ideal, but come on people--put a pair of stockings under those skirts or make the character a lizardperson or zombie and the shock value completely disappears. If you choose to traipse around with your butt hanging out because you ONLY use the default costume and always build hot girls then part of that is on you. I tend to like the revealing parts because they stack better with underlying garments and because on a robot/zombie/lion/ape/whatever they allow far more combinations of parts than a hardcoded full body covering does.

The only top that is truly revealing is the witch one, mainly because you can't put anything on under it. I would like to see jackets for ladies too, but mainly open ones, for the specific purpose of layering.

    YMMV.

You could build a quasi-Blaster with Mag 6 hold and aggroless Mag 6 Confuse and built in perma-mezz protection and unkillable, taunting pets.

Illusion Dominators would be powerful as hell built by people who know what they are doing (that is, the same people who make them powerful as hell on a Controller). The only thing they lack is immobilizes to benefit from Domination, a questionable benefit at best. Other than those easily spammable powers they have more Controls that benefit from Domination than Ice or Electric Control do, since in all three cases only the AoE hold receives extra magnitude, and Illusion gets an extra single target power.

Illusion/Fire/Ice, or possible /Fire, would give Illusion/Cold a serious run for its money. I'm fairly sure if it wouldn't always win against AVs specifically, but the sheer DPS would be enough that it would shred lots of other things at a modest tradeoff. It probably wouldn't kill AVs as fast, but it would do it and be a lot better suited to other situations, particularly in the arena of AoE damage.

All this other stuff... who cares if you can see your toon's reflection in a window when that reflection has the same 2004 body/face/limitations as it had in 2004?

Going slightly off topic, but I would take CoH's costume system over locked assets and forced costume/stat linkage of other MMOs any day. Other games are able to have robes and other systems because all of the art assets are hard-linked together. I don't care about individually moveable fingers when every hand is poking out from the same set of 3 robes and 5 suits of armor.

I'll express my opinion once again: all Dark Astoria needed was a series of story arcs and a TF or two to put it on par with Croatoa and Striga. Much less work involved futzing with 'art assets', and with the time/effort saved they could have worked on a whole new 50+ co-op Incarnate zone. Fans of the old Dark Astoria: happy! People who want 50+ co-op Incarnate content: happy! Everybody's happy!

If they could nuke every early zone and start over I'd support that. Hopefully Peregrine Island, Steel Canyon, Talos, and Brickstown are on that list.

Also EXTREMELY happy this isn't another Praetorian zone.
