  1. It used to be a case of TA living without stamina rather easy, partially down to longer cast times. The longer the cast time the more end recovery you have between the activation of each power. However since then people have asked for a reduction in cast times. Some people found they spent each fight debuffing and just as they were about to use a secondary, gorramit the group is dead, onto next! Real end loss comes from the secondary. I could probably dig up where people have said that teaming with TA, groups get flattened in no time.

Nowadays good end recovery is alot more necessary but where you gonna get it? A lot of TAs powers do not self stack so knowledge on not over using a end heavy powers needlessly helps along with slotting your powers for end redux. Later you might get EMP arrow which has an adverse effect on your end recovery, as a panic button you might never know exactly when your going to use it and how low your endurance bar maybe at the time. So conserve energy is very nice. I hasten it.

I have two builds one is with stamina and one is without stamina, the more offendery one is infact the one with stamina and the defendery one is without stamina. You can from vigilance, save on endurance, but I find thats not quite enough so a mix of end slotting, hastened conserve and not over using any debuffs which wouldn't stack anyway keeps my endurance just good enough. By the time I am through my chains I hit conserve, carry on, be up to full end and in need of conserve just as it recharges. That build proved a tight build down to the last slot. At 50 putting the last slot in did it actually really work out.

I will suggest cohtitan redtomax site for coverage on what powers do and any guide here, the more recent the better.

    Thats the plan.

I could take your build, rebuild it, repeat everything you've ever done and not know diddly about how its done. Its a shortcut, on a plate freebie, and every time you care to mention what you've done I could be like "Oh yeah I did that a week ago." Then I could from being clueless about Mids go ask for help on making something simple

Teamed as any defender, that I play, I might get only 50% of the time it takes to fight a group to actual use my secondary, during that time I feel its best to output the greatest dpe against the group that I can, which is through AoE and I feel reasonably happy with the level of aoe over time with DP.
  4. Don't bother with a rechg in hibernate. Don't do a thing.

I get the thinking behind the build but for me no bonus is worth seeing a huge ED cap reduction for.

I'd wait if possible for the new game build to come through prior to changes as I just realised it's only 3 weeks away but a freespec has got to go I guess.

Read into exactly what each enhancement gives you. Sometimes people get a bonus at a price of the powers potential buffage.

    I do recommend haste.

The only power taunt slots are good in is taunt when it comes to Ice/Ice so avoid taunt slotting frost breath if poss. If your .2 % below softcap, don't worry about it.

Now the dead horse, from beta 2004 till now I've so uncommonly teamed with a FA Tanker using RotP even in the heyday of Burners that it's actually a minor surprise to see a -self resurrect devotee- Tank in game, and the few times it's happened I had an odd feeling the individual had a proclivity to underground blood oath societies (likely a Twilight enthusiast).

As OP mentioned ("Against all advice, I took Rise of the Phoenix") very infrequently does anyone in this area of the forums with knowledge of the AT suggest taking RotP as anything more then an afterthought if there's room (usually there isn't) and if it floats your boat.

On the other hand there are players from time to time who will point out how a power like RotP is a useful part of their build and playstyle on their Tank.
That's fine, I just don't want to ever team with them, because I don't enjoy the company of Tankers who need to be defeated to manage aggro ;] (+4 / aggro cap mobs, not -1 Radio missions).

Any other AT including Brutes are welcome to whatever flavor of self-rez the Devs set upon it, but for Tanks, and specifically for a weaker armor like FA, a built in rezzer is often a self fulfilling prophecy if you choose to let it be.
So when it's all boiled down, my biggest issue from the beginning of the CoH Tank, is that this is a lazy design decision for this AT, a class who's one shining attribute is resistance to defeat.

That's my pov, but like I told OP if 'you' have fun with this power and it fits your playstyle, that's what should matter to you.
Some peoples egoes are non existent within their toons. They go for concept they RotP whenever and not care. RotP abuse comes from choosing pace, or playing with anyone and their lack of support, believe me today I thought I saw two of the worst corrupters I could ever imagine. If it's fun, it's fun and if there was one server, one server only then I would have just as much confidence in someone who loved their RotP as much as I could you. There is no need to be defeated to manage aggro.

What I will not do is form an opinion on people who take RotP. **** can happen to stonetankers in granite, the ability to get back up intangible long enough to retoggle could be nice. Not worth taking the power through lack of use I know, but concepts are concepts.

    The Phoenix is legendary.

You can have a really survivable build with RotP and then still choose not to survive XD.
  6. Generally people get a good insight to what your character is about from you making all the power choices. If you use mids hero builder we can see what sort of values you have for now. Produce a build, for many reasons it's best, not just for you but for everyone.
  7. The word need gets over used. The game has changed since some rules were created by people on what is needed and what isn't and will go on changing. Crystal armour which is an 18 pick comes in handy from 28 at the latest as a rough estimate with the Moonfire TF. Minerals well, Psi is met at 15 but Minerals is a 26 pick, I would get it before 40.
  8. Lol, sometimes you have to wait a day for people to reply, I remember someone asking a question at 4 am in the morning, they gave it 1 hour for people to answer and then bumped.

Fly is alright, mine flies. She is a Valkyrie of sorts, I got mainly Valkyries.

Did you check the Brute section as its very similar?

What can I say about Elec/Elec, playwise same as other tanks cept you can end drain, build wise it'll be important to take some key powers in good order. If you have Mids try making one then post it as then people who may not even have this type can still look at it and come up with advice that could be of value to you.
  9. 1) Powersink - taaaaake it. Use it with the field in long fights.

    2) Lightning clap - okay for fast aggro consolidaters and ok just before a crash - not wonderful, you can control the direction if you learn to place yourself to make it act like a cone.

    3) BU is deemed by some as skippable but in terms of dam to the end bar I'd say it is on par with having stamina, during a fight duration and also it helps to hit. Whiffing air don't get the job done.

The rest is determined bye the to hit calculator.
Of course the highendtasks are a matter of a build. Without a proper build, it would be luck to succeed.
And although I know that CoH is not rocket science, I would never say that everybody can do the same things given the same character. My playtime experience says simply the opposite.

Edit: Rereading it: It takes more skill to play a ill controller than a shield/SR scrapper. The approach is simply more difficult than go in and scrap.

I have an Illusion and feel that plonking some pets who will keep aggro well on an AV and getting on with the job at hand is pretty trivial. x8 setting missions is a different kettle of fish but I wasn't referring to that. I'd like to think that anyone can read the details of a power, test a few ideas and within a day go about playing an Illusion well, versus AVs given the right build. Personal survivability versus a AV isn't exactly a worry compared to playing other sets as pets take aggro. With them taking aggro you don't have to worry as much as other sets about what the AVs are capable of.
  12. I am very tempted with the Earth Mastery for my Dark Tanker, I had a dark brute long before my tanker so the tanker is in no rush but eventually!
  13. I'd say that Brimstone is possibly what is considered the least necessary armour, but maybe you might go perma granite in which case I would still have stone skin, rock armour and minerals, rooted, mudpots and earths embrace. From /elec lightning clap is possibly the least necessary, on my stone I wouldn't entertain it where as I would all other AoEs, may as well hit a many at a time as possible if solo. So really lightning clap and havoc punch I'd consider skipping. I ain't got a Stone/Elec but I do have a Stone/Stone and a Elec/Elec. Teleport, Haste, Weave prior IO sets and perhaps fitness cos ya might want it.
  14. I must admit that when it comes to an Illusion doing anything it'll take a 3 AV at once fight to impress me. I would be impressed with two done together. This is simply because the pets hold onto aggro. I'd pretty much think that if you gave anyone the same character with the right build they'd be doing entire arcs and AVs undefeated in no time. So it becomes all about the build.

    WP v's Inv & GR

When I read Invulnerable I do not tack on words "to everything". If I were the OP I would make a character that is entirely new, believe in oneself in thinking whatever is decided will be made alright.
  16. RotP Phoenix concept, debt badges, phoenix on them, defeat comes from being down and completely out. It's like a heal from negative health.

I been saying this for years.

However you can't play other peoples characters, what other people do may require you to go beyond aggro cap to help them; or it requires you to physically play their characters so that their character attacks at the right moment for once; or make sure a safe distance is kept as the safest place is not behind the tank, literally behind the tank practically up his butt sharing all the aoe like some people have thought in my experience. As hard as you can try to turn the cones away they keep jumping behind you.

Truth is being the last man standing is nothing to brag about. Either the team didn't respect the enemy and game mechanics enough or the tanker might of been fixated on some minion whilst the team were taking the brunt.
  18. I don't consider anyone that stupid that they can't develop their own builds. People should do most of the work for want they want to achieve as they are the ones who will play it and know exactly what they're looking for at the end of the day.

There is no defensiveness really as I think some of us can look back to the days when firetanks looked identical and everyone followed the same rules and thought boring. Same old.

If some people do not wish to post their builds there is no point coming up with a single reason why they don't as it is likely to be wrong. Personally I think it is fun to have something to figure out, ergo I wouldn't go here is my build to others. I have an Inv/SS, and lets say you wanted help with an Inv/Mace and a Ice/SS I would help with them, amalgamate the two as in Inv/SS and it could be damn close but still wrong so it don't matter.

I remember doing a stonetankers build for him, he made it ingame to every detail, I said to him "Good build" and he replied along the lines of "thanks I did it myself". If people are gonna take some credit for even the knock on results then contribute to it me thinks. It takes some people no more than 60 mins to knock up what a beginner might take a couple of days to work out, but we were all beginners once, if we happened to appreciate the learning curve then perhaps we happen to appreciate leaving that for others. If people get good at building for themselves one build then they will get faster and better at their others.

Days of having a mother to wipe the chocolate of ones face should of been long over.
  19. 9 pool powers being taken then? fitness 3, haste poss 1, travel 1, 4 left hmm, 2 from an epic? 2 leaderships to finish up? My decision on which one to take will probably come from knowing the rest of the build...most likely empty clips.

    lol sound silly i know
It doesn't matter to you if your build skills are better or not does it, the fact is, whatever, you have you worked it out, you developed it. People should contribute to their own goals.
  21. Changing sides will in the life time of your character work out easiest and take no time. Traps is much more team compatible.
  22. Well done Garthalus, it doesn't matter how you do it, any means possible matters most! The world shouldn't be unsaved cos of some piece of red tape, to hell with laws.

    (I don't exploit this).
  23. Taunt auras apply a taunt duration at a tick rate. If the taunt duration doesn't last the tick rate then a npc might turn to face someone else before another tick is applied. This also means that any npc the moment they're outside of the aura might no longer be both taunted and interested in the tanker. With such an aura team members might be best off waiting for a tanker to use a pbaoe or taunt or use a heavy ST attack as its likely got a wide area gauntlet before attacking. It basically is best to allow mobs in range of such an aura for a sec or two before attacking. Should the tanker move slightly an npc might of exited the aura only momentarily to become lost aggro.

My allowing a Willpower to consolidate aggro in order to not get aggro or for others to not get it is no different to what I would do teaming with any tanker because most any tanker can move through a group without their aura ticking on any of the mobs.

Different auras do different things and be debuffed, the debuff effects their ability to generate threat. If a damage auras taunt component relies on tohit then under tohit debuffs it could miss and be worse than willpowers.

All in all I wouldn't team with a WP any differently than I would anyother tank. I'll see a Pbaoe before I aoe or ST attack through a tanker if I am not sure.
  24. EndMod-I:50(21), P'Shift-EndMod:30(21), P'Shift-End%:30(46)

Stamina would look like that with me on everything I make.
