well, it is a traditional role and game balance dictates that role can't change dramatically without dramatically affecting the whole game.

One of Johnny's points I agree with is if your problem with tanks is lack of damage the devs 'fixed' it by creating brutes, .

I have tanks, I have brutes- they play nothing alike and I enjoy them both.

No, it wouldn't be a smarter move. A more costly move? Yes, but not smarter.
    How, more costly?
Either people would be paying hard cash for forum access, as per my original suggestion, or would be long-serving veteran players who've already provided substantial material support for the game over the years, who'd bring veteran experience and passion to the larger forum community and who would require little in the way of active moderation.

True, and I'm making use of them.
But I'd prefer to use my energy in the service of the official forums.

Damage dealing ATs are extremely popular and making Tankers tougher doesn't make them more appealing to the majority, especially given the most common complaint about Tankers I see by people who don't like them is their damage. If the goal is to broaden Tanker's appeal, you won't do that by doubling down on something they already do really well when they're already at a point where it can be superfluous and doesn't really give an advantage in many situations.
Playing a tank appeals to people who like playing tanks.
People who like doing a lot of damage play other ATs.

If you're advocating for a new AT that is potentially extremely survivable AND does a lot of damage, that's called a Brute.

If you want the sort of reliable survivability embodied by the tank coupled with substantially more damage, that's not ever going to happen, at least not in this game.

    2. Increasing Tanker damage caps does nothing to harm or take away anything from the people who do like them for their tanking role.
No group of players will ever complain about an unexpected increase in their game effectiveness.

But in the MMO verse, when you don't see any smoke, there's no fire.
And as I noted earlier, your crusade to get tanks a damage buff is still a one-man show.

This tells me players who like tanks are happy with the status quo.
Players who would prefer to do more damage have other options.

I realize this observation won't dampen your enthusiasm for the cause, but it's something to keep in mind.

for people who enjoy the traditional 'tanking' role in MMO groups?

    yeah, it would.

That would be hilarious- my level 12 newbie should have 30 medium defenses sitting in his AH window by the time I get home this afternoon, and he's dirt poor (by my standards, anyway). A character with actual resources would have a basically limitless supply of whatever inspirations they liked!
  8. that would be cool.

Hey look, it's someone making a bunch of points I've already addressed!

Allowing some access rather than none was a smart move.
Further liberalizing access would be an even smarter move, provided the technical hurdles are fairly low.

I liked them- I'll definitely check out that arc when I switch over and start playing my 'new free account with no cool vet upgrades' villain.
  11. oh, and from a money/outfitting stand point:

Lizardroid's bankroll topped out at a bit over $1,000,000, mostly from selling his big green insp from the tutorial and unloading a bunch of arcane commons from running missions.

Right now, after kitting out with level 15 generic IOs & spending profligately on stacks of medium defense inspirations, he has roughly 400k in the bank.

This is without "buying smart" on anything- I just found what I wanted and bid what I thought would get it for me without excessive typing- bid creeping is for ridiculously expensive stuff & losers, in that order. I also have standing bids on a couple of ten-stacks of medium defenses so I won't run out.

In my last couple of missions I was reminded of the awful feeling of getting the great orange RARE SALVAGE! & RARE RECIPE! alerts, then remembering "oh wait, I'm level nothing." Drives me nuts!

The rare salvage I actually sold for 11k, which was amazing- is there some kind of new market mechanism that would inspire people to buy up junk like this? I had no such luck with my level 11 Snipe recipe- ah well!

I might engage in some minor flipping, just for some spending money- I see in the market forum some misguided altruist has been trying to "crash" the price of luck charms, which smells like opportunity to me. =P
  12. Back in the saddle!

Last night I ran around King's Row doing some targeted street sweeping- I've always loved jumping around Kings just for the heck of it, and inspired by a thread Sam Tow posted on an old story arc that made him remember why he wanted to play the game I decided to bust up as many muggings/threatenings/CoT sacrifices as I could.

This AM I had some unexpected 'alone time'- I got up at my now traditional 7am, but my son was still inexplicably asleep. I set his Easter Basket out for discovery, made a cup of coffee & fired up CoH.

I managed to finish the second Twinshot arc before he rousted me to witness the anarchy of jellybeans & beheading of the chocolate lambs, and it was fun.

An upgrade I liked was persistent waypoints- I took a few unlucky hits against the final spawn in Manticore's Mansion, hit the hospital and was not looking forward to wending my way back across the entire map. But lo, I popped in and was greeted by convinient waypoints steering me in the right direction.
    Quite nice.

One of my tricks for skating through the lower levels is to stock up on Medium defense inspirations on the market- price is usually no object for my characters, but sometimes the annoyance of running to the market to check bids means I don't bother, and then mishaps like dying in the final room happen.

But of course NOW I have the portable market window, which I had totally forgotten about until dying. Never again need I head into a mission without a full compliment of big inspirations, whoohoo!

Tried pulling it up inside the mish and no dice- which makes sense from a balance standpoint.

The final mission was really fun, running around destroyed Galaxy City, stumbling across Maelstrom & mulching praetorian Clockwork. The enemy supervillains seem to have had quite a bit more thought put into their design than usual, which I appreciated.

I don't get the next installment until level 14, which isn't bad as I ding'ed 12 with a little street sweeping after the mission.

I headed over to the University to run the invention tutorial & pick up the badge, and found one more small annoyance of being FTP- no mission complete button. I reflexively tried to autocomplete the 'create an IO' mish so I could sell the Luck Charm, but the button was blanked out.

    Oh well!

Finished that off, then picked up the Midnighter arc before logging off- that should get me to 14 or near enough.

    Differences from the olden days:

inherent stamina is a huge improvement. It was around before I left, but at that point I was mainly playing my high level characters and hadn't bothered to respec any of them- this is my first time playing a new character with the new system.

Not only am I not running out of end every other spawn, but between inherent stamina & Ninja Run I've been able to take pretty much everything useful in my primary and secondary as it comes up- no deciding what to skip or having to make do with a weak attack chain because I have to get everything set up for a travel power and stamina.

It's really nice, having enough attacks without having to rely on vet powers.
  13. in honor of Sam's stalwart heroism, I spent last night's play session rescuing innocent citizens from a wide variety of mischance on the streets of King's Row.
  14. I'll give that launcher trick a try- force-quitting every other time I want to play is getting OLD.

my thinking runs along these lines-

did the hero invent his powers?

    then I go with science.

are the hero's powers a result of science he had no hand in creating?

    then I go with tech.
  16. I've been playing this one since it was released.
Originally it was comically hard, except for well-built, highly organized teams....the fate of a typical PUG composed of random strangers with messed up builds wasn't pretty. It took me 5 tries to earn that respec for my mind/kin so he could get rid of Teleport (which he re-spec'ed back into years later, but that's another tale).

At some point it was pretty good- still a tough fight for your average PUG, but not pointlessly hard.

But now, it's just an interminable wait between waves. Even the most half-baked team can defeat the spawns in good time- the challenge is no longer defeating enemy spawns, but conquering the boredom of waiting for their arrival.

So yeah, please do something devs.
Given our brave new world of being able to buy respec's from a store, the trial is in dire need of an upgrade.

It's pretty stinky, but the previous owner got a deal on it way back when and the new managment isn't interested in putting money into something that's still working. And of course the prevelance of social media have undermined the whole rationale behind dedicated forums.

Yes, it's all dreadfully manual and probably would be a ***** to script auto-signups for. But would YOU want to have to comb through 60-70 individual forums looking to root out malicious spammers, in addition to having to do your REAL job during the day?
More manpower is a real argument, as is the technical stuff which I don't know much about.

But the access would be gated behind the 'teir' system. If it could be made to work, they'd be granting access to long-time veterans with established track records. Not saying there aren't a few people like that who're total PITA's, but that's what the ban stick is for.

The idea isn't to just hand forum access to everyone online, just long-time vets who are more likely to be community assets than community problems.

Wanting more access for free because they got partial access for free just isn't a compelling argument.
Within the confines of the game world, where developers do all the work & players enjoy the result, yes, by all means impose restraints- it's a business & the bills have to be paid. Of course, I'm finding myself continually surprised by how few in game restrictions I encounter as a max tier vet- the entire panorama of CoH is spread before me, aside from some end-game content that did not fully engage my interest when I was a paying customer.

But forums are not the game, they're an adjunct to the game. And unlike the in-game environment, the forums are 'created' by the players. Experienced, motivated players participating in forums are a resource for the game & its players, VIP and otherwise.

In game, I'm a total leech.
I enjoy (nearly) all the environment has to offer for free- aside from the dearth of character slots & incarnate stuff I haven't noticed any difference from my days as a paying customer, other than I'm not paying anything.

Here, on the forums, I am a resource. Left to my own devices I instigate discussions, I help people out with advice where appropriate, I participate in discussions. Even people who don't like me would mostly admit that on balance I'm 'good' for forums.

It doesn't make sense to me that I'm given free run of the game, the thing they deserve to be paid for, while being denied free run of the forums, where they could be taking advantage of my content creating largesse.

Well, my point is that 5-odd years of continuous subscription got me a bunch of meaningful in-game performance enhancements & neat costume stuff. The devs clearly see the value in rewarding longtime supporters of the game with a superior 'premium' game experience.

What's the point of excluding forum access from that list?
Especially given that players with a long history of subscription are likely to be valuable community assets.

If the forum restriction is an arbitrary one (and other than possible technical limitations I haven't seen a compelling argument otherwise), the community inside the gate suffers more from it than those being excluded.

    Quote:
Or the devs can go back to the pre-Freedom forum access where the nonsubscribers get any access to the forums. It won't bother me either way.
    Me either.
The internet is full of places to post, as many longtime regulars discovered following the silly ban on game chat in the culture forum.

But "this is how it is, so it shouldn't be changed" isn't a compelling defense, and forums rarely benefit from excluding informed, motivated contributors.
  21. waaaay back when I always used magic origin because figuring out the intentionally confusing DO & SO naming conventions for the others was too confusing.

My main early on was a Magic origin kat/regen scrapper & I more or less figured out the Magic store, so that's what I stuck with.

Since the Invention system came along and rescued us from the stupidity of vendors listing an Accuracy enhancement as Gamma Particle Irradiation, I just use whatever origin best fits the character.
  22. Servers seem plenty busy to me, even my current off-brand home Infinity.

I'd like the whole game to just be one gigantic sever, but barring that the current situation is fine- there are high pop servers, low pop servers and everything in between. The devs handed control of server density over to the playerbase- server transfers are easy and relatively inexpensive, so if you're unhappy where you are just go somewhere else.
  23. co-sign!

not sure what the mechanics of the situation are, but as a confirmed alt-o-holic the more slots the merrier!

You've been on about this tanker thing for a looooong time, which I can respect- you feel passionately about it, you're willing to agitate for it, and that's great.

But it's time to ask yourself why nobody's joined the fight.

I had my own unpopular cause, the market merger. I rode that hobbyhorse for years, from shortly after market launch until the devs finally bowed to the inevitable. Early on, there were only a few of us making the case. As time passed and the issues came into starker relief, more and more informed players joined the cause.

Over the years here I've found that strong arguments tend to resonate with the community & pick up support as time passes.
If a point you're making or a suggestion you're pushing isn't gathering that kind of community support, there's usually a reason...
