I'm currently in awe of how fun my Traps/DP is.
-
Both mallets give a lot of your main damage. If you skip them you may find yourself hating the toon. I can't imagine my Earth/Earth without both hammer times.
-
To echo what a few posters have said:
If you have Granite, you can play at any setting above +1/x4. If you do that, your Fury will generate quickly due to all the incoming attacks. This will negate the damage debuff on Granite and put you way up in the sky as far as damage percentage is concerned.
EDIT:
Quote:... whoa, wait. What the hell?On paper then, under the new Fury and with the damage debuff to Granite armor, a Brute in Granite Armor without any other external or internal buffs, should be putting out the same average damage as a tank: This being based on ~63 fury being the equivalent of a scrapper, and Granite's -30% damage debuff being the difference between scrappers and tanks.
So yes, in practical effect, being in Stone Armor will effect negatively effect Fury. However, the damage debuff of Granite itself will, in most cases, affect total damage more-so than the loss of Fury itself. -
I've teamed with him on about six different occasions with my 50 Ill/Kin Troller. He plays, you guessed it, Harry Dresden, a Grav/FF/Fire Mastery Controller. He's an absolute joy to team with, and is on my global friends list.

Quote:But it's not. The Scrapper HP cap is lower than the Brute HP cap. When I say Brutes excel when it comes to HP cap numbers, that's correct. You need to seriously take a chill pill.
If you don't like to be corrected, then you need to be more accurate when you post.
Since that is a misleading, and incorrect statement when discussing Brute vs. Scrapper mitigation.
Scrapper Base HP: 1338.6
Scrapper HP Cap: 2409.5
Brute Base HP: 1449.3
Brute HP Cap: 3212.7
Quote:1) In those threads Brutes came out higher, by 3%.
2) Brute fury got nerfed, no new comparison is available.
3) None of those DPS chains take AAO into account, the gap between what a Scrapper gets from AAO and a Brute is larger than you seem to believe.
(Small side note: I don't consider Fury 'nerfed' but equalized between Tankers and Scrappers.)
Quote:You're contradicting yourself, it does NOT work as well on a Brute.
You might want to keep consistent before losing your cool.
KM does not work as well for a Brute, no matter how much you think it does.
I'd like for it to work as well for Brutes. I'd like for KM, DB, Elm & SD to all be adjusted the way that Claws was adjusted to work better mechanically for Brutes & Fury.
I doubt we'll ever see it happen though.
"Works just as well" means you're not going to feel significantly less purposeful playing a set on a Brute as you would with a Scrapper. Just because Scrappers will do more damage doesn't mean people won't enjoy it as Brutes, nor does it mean you're going to be sitting at the bottom of the totem pole when the numbers are finished rolling. You're still going to do a great deal of damage on a Brute as you are on a Scrapper. Do you opt out of playing anything but Energy/, Axe/, SS/, Stone or Mace/ Brutes just because you can use the same sets for more numbers on Scrappers? (I sincerely hope not.)
I spend a lot of my time repeating myself when it comes to people misunderstanding the numerical mechanics of the Brute AT. Sometimes I get a little testy. Sorry 'bout that, bud. -
Easy workaround:
When you finish a mission, type "petcom_all dismiss".
Exit.
Enter a new mission, and resummon.
That's how we used to do it in the old days; did everyone forget? -
Quote:That's... what I said. The difference is Power Siphon maintenance requires you to continually use KM attacks, which is a limiting factor in my opinion.
Quote:And for the record, both Power Siphon and Soul Drain add much more to a Scrapper's damage output than a Brute's.
If more players actually posted Brute times for the Rikti Pylon Thread, especially DM/SD and FM/SD - you'd actually see just how large a gap it is. And this is only with self buffing. There is a reason that DM/SD with nearly perma, fully saturated, Soul Drain dominates the top times in that thread.
Quote:That's incorrect.
Brute's have higher resistance caps, which is immediately beneficial to Invuln, Ela, FA and DA but not much an advantage to other sets due to the generally less played support sets that buff resistances.
So where a well built invuln Brute could get to 90% Sm/L resistance, the Scrapper can only ever get to 75%.
Quote:That's incorrect.
As soon as large, "always on" or outside damage buffs come into the picture - Scrappers pull ahead by a large margin due to how damage buffing and the melee damage scalars work together.
Adding damage to a Brute, with Fury, means the damage bonus gets "diluted" in a way.
This is why KM, DB, Elm & SD are all sets that work better for scrappers than brutes.
Quote:For reference, Scrapper shield charge does nearly DOUBLE the damage that the Brute version does.
You're actually quoting their Damage Scale modifier. ParagonWiki and City of Data both list Tankers as having a .100 (or 1.0 for regular decimals) damage resistance modifier. You're actually quoting their Damage Scale modifier. Brutes and Scrappers have .75 as a modifier. Ever notice how Brute armor numbers are 75% of Tanker armor numbers? That's why, chief.
Give me a little more credit and actually read my posts before telling me I don't know what I'm talking about. -
You don't need Assault. You're a Brute. It's a waste of endurance and you'd benefit more from Lightning Field.
-
Quote:And that's why I posted this thread.I've gone through almost the exact same thing as you, though I play villains 90% of the time.
And I've actually been roaming around in D (for lack of anywhere else) with my main, Agonus, looking for a new RPVG to join. And I'd love to say I've found people to just RP with for longer than a few minutes. But I haven't. I've been completely blown off multiple times now, regardless of how peacefully and friendly-like I approach anyone.
I used think the whole "the Virtue RP community is too clique-ish" thing was exaggerated, but well, zounds. That's a pretty spot on description, in my humble opinion.
For what it's worth, I do intend to keep looking for a new RP crowd for Aggie, or my new soon-to-be-fallen-hero pet project Nitrion.
Back on topic as much as possible, I put this thing up to hopefully give myself a little more exposition to the current RP community of Virtue. As I mentioned earlier I'd be glad to lay out some of my major characters and hopefully find a place for them to be.
Anyone want to help? -
Quote:I know that. That doesn't mean the modifiers are different. They both come in at .75.Actually Brutes have higher resistance caps, the same as tanks. They just usually need external buffs to reach them, but not always; an /Elec Brute reaches 90% energy resistance on its own for example.

"I work my hands to the bone all day,
Hey... hey... yeah, hey.
I earn that money so the rent gets paid.
Hey... hey... yeah, hey.
But then came the change on that fateful day,
Hey... hey... yeah, hey.
They told me they could see it from a mile 'way.
And aw, they said the fire burned.
And aw, they said the wheel still turned.
And aw, they told me I was spurned.
And yeah, I took my name and ran."
Perfectly in time with the temp of his song, Remington "Remmy" Stein's hammer hit a nail protruding from the steel framework of the building he sat atop. When the nail was done, he moved right and placed a new one. The sun beat down on him even in the cool autumn breeze, and sweat stained his forehead, chest and underarms. He'd been doing this for six months now, and the people of Paragon City knew him not only as the construction worker with a stunning country-western voice, but as Match Point, the fiery hero that kept the people of Steel Canyon safe.
"Remmy! 'Ey man, c'mon down here, we need a patch-up and the welder's on lunch," the foreman called up to him.
Remmy looked down from his perch and attached a steel cable to his safety harness. "Man, that Jackson's never 'round when ya need his happy backside, is he? Y'all hold tight, I'll be down in a Texas minute." With the grace of a falling brick, he tossed himself over the side and repelled down to the ground. "Alright boys, where're ya needin' me?"
"Over here, Remmy. This plate cracked."
"Alright, hold it for me." Remmy took off his right glove and started to snap his fingers. "C'mon darlin'. Light up." With a sudden spark and a whoosh that sounded not unlike a torch being lit, his palm began to spurt an ice-blue flame. He crouched down and began running his hand over the crack in the aforementioned metal plate. Sparks flew around his hand like flies from a confined space, but not a single burn mark touched his skin. "You fellas see the Steel Canyon Steelclads last night? Lost to the damn Cowboys!"
"Yeah, no kiddin' Rem. I think maybe we need to put a super on that team just so they can pass the ball further than ten yards."
"Ooh-wee, I hear that! Tell you what, you guys put in a word to Coach Jenkins and I'll play for 'em," Remmy said as he finished the weld. "There y'are. Now don't go breakin' it again, last thing I need is--"
His words were cut short as a loud metal snap rang out just over his head. He looked up, and was hit in the face by a flattened 45 caliber bullet.
"Ow, gad-dangit."
"Don't move, meat," said a voice across the construction fence. "This is Outcast territory." A sizzling noise followed as the outspoken Outcast Lead Scorcher walked through the chain link, turning it to molten metal. "You worthless pukes have been building this junk-pile for years. Now, we're here to undo your handiwork." The few lackeys behind him raised a few submachine guns and automatic rifles.
"... y'all are yankin' me, right?" Remmy stepped forward and wiped the sweat from his brow. "We sit out here'n work our tired hind-ends off all dang day, and you come over here and mouth off like a bunch of top crop villains. Why don't you do me a favor, y'orange skinned git," he said as he started walking towards the leader. "Why don't you go ahead and mosey on outta here? You probably got s'more important bee-ess on yer hands, like puttin' cats in trees and pissin' in people's toilet tanks. N'fact, I'm sure I caught one of you jokers last week tryin' to draw on my boss' car--"
His sentence was cut short by a hail of gunfire.
The sound of small metal pellets hitting the ground followed shortly after.
"Y'all should know that's a mighty good way to get me mad," Remmy said, his right hand humming loudly with what sounded like stored kinetic energy. Another wave of gunfire, another clattering of pellets. But now the humming was louder. "Y'all are 'bout as sharp as baseballs. See, now I've got enough of this here k'netic energy to wallop one of you real good, and don't forget who I am."
"Who the hell are you," the leader roared, his hands igniting with searing fire. He found out shortly as Remmy's fist rammed into the poor sap's face and sent him flying across the street.
"Smart thugs know I'm Match Point. Dumb ones, well, they find out real quick."
The Outcasts turned to flee, and were stopped by a literal wall of fire.
"Hey, Mickey, bring me that jackhammer o'er there, I need to teach these gents a quick lesson in interruptin' my work site," Remmy called behind him with a grin. The remaining thugs didn't need to hear it twice, taking the risk and running through the wall of fire only to slam groins-first into a police vehicle at the nearby red light.
"You got some live ones, sheriff!" Remmy laughed, the fire subsiding as he turned back and started his climb back up to his perch. "Y'all throw that orange-skinned jackass wherever, if you find where his sorry hide landed."
He plopped himself back on his girder, and started singing again.
"I ain't a fan of playin' games,
Hey... hey... yeah, hey.
I never take chances all the same,
Hey... hey... yeah, hey.
I do what I can to make a name,
Hey... hey... yeah, hey.
But I'm here for work and not for fame.
And I said yeah, my fire lights the sky!
And I said yeah-heah, that ain't a lie!
And I said whoa, I don't choose my fights,
I say yeah, took my name and ran."
((Not my best writing... but I wanted to. Match Point, 27 Fire/Kin Controller.
His story is cut and dry. He worked for Kirk Cage and was a Scrapyarder for five years until his powers manifested in a mineshaft with a natural gas line and blew up 40 of his friends. Cage had him deported and Paragon took him in. He's currently trying to get the Paragon City government to take notice of Kirk Cage and the Consortium so they can possibly send aid.)) -
Quote:You can't do that... anywhere, really.Eh unfortunately that wont stop judgmental people from being... well, judgmental. Some folks you just can't change their mind even if your toon's existence depended on it, that's just who how they are.
It is unfortunate that many can ruin the novelty for a whole lot more, you can't even really be a werewolf in any game or site anymore without someone pointing a finger and calling you a "furry".
Quote:As for WoD folks, only people I see complaining about WoD characters are elitists. Really for me, I don't care. A vampire is a vampire, as long as you don't sparkle, that's all I ask. Please do not sparkle!
Quote:Me: *attacks this person RP-style*
WoD Person: ((Excuse me, as per WoD rules you can't do such a thing without first possessing this thing/doing something frivolous/that won't work at all unless you follow the RULES))
Me: ((... @#$% this, I'm going to find another person to swing at.)) -
Quote:Oh no, I don't mean you'll be shunned. I'm just saying, set yourself apart from the rest by showing you've got more moxy! Not a "you're lower so make better" thing, just a "Here's the rest but I'm the best!" confidence thing.Of course, this brings up a whole different, but similar, issue when it comes to RP communities creating their own dividing lines: The "You have to prove you're worth RPing with" mentality. Why should anyone have to "prove" anything? It sets a daunting and, quite frankly, unfriendly expectation that a new arrival won't be welcome unless they're "up to snuff". It also subtly reeks of Elitism. (*scoff* You aren't good enough to RP with me.)
I roleplay with everyone equally. If I enjoy the RP, then I'll add them to friends and seek them out for more RP. If I don't enjoy it, well, I'll call it a wash and probably not actively seek them out in the future. I won't flat-out avoid them or ignore them should I come across them, they just wouldn't be first on my list to call when I'm in the mood for some RP.
I try to keep in consideration that online RPing is still relatively new to a lot of people. For others, the entire concept of "roleplay" is a foreign idea. So there are a lot of new people out there that just need a guiding hand. However, if you're just going to glove-slap them from the start, well, that leaves a lasting impression -- although, not one you'd be likely to be proud of. It's situations like these where people are snubbed for what are ultimately petty reasons that lead to a server's "bad reputation". -
Quote:Exactly.>_> That's not what she is, though. She was never human and just happens to have cat-bits. She comes from a race of primal and proud cat-folk known as the Tyberan (my own creation) who are very much a warrior-oriented caste-society. You fight or you die and the strong rule over the weak. It's made her an interesting character (if I do say so myself) -- but I suppose that will all be in the proving, should I get into RPing here on Virtue.
-
Quote:The way you avoid being lumped in with the rest of Virtue's crap-content catgirls is by proving yourself. Don't be a catgirl, be a girl who has cat bits. If that makes sense.Well, catgirls are a running joke everywhere, I think. Even back at the peak of Katja's career in the GDI, they were frowned upon, and then came the age of "furries" (furres?) where everyone who played a catgirl (or any kind of anthro) was a closet pervert.
I just hope this isn't an issue of judge first, RP later (meaning never). Katja is a quality character built over years of practice, love, and inspiration. -
Quote:I'm originally from North Harris. Know where Tomball is? I was 30 minutes Southeast. Moved since then.Well, I'm not from H-town proper, more of an outlying suburb, but it's the closest major metropolis that people would associate with. XD
Quote:Now in that situation, I can understand, when a character is an alt of another character. However, the situations I'm talking about are like so:
Having two characters that are "best friends" (like I've seen elsewhere); it just doesn't make sense. You'd never see them together, so how can they be "best friends"? Or to have two characters that are romantically involved... who are never seen together, ever. The list goes on and on of people having these intricate (and sometimes intimate) relationships with their own characters -- when those characters would never have the opportunity to interact in-game. To me, it just breaks the quality of the RP.
Quote:Well, I have no idea where that is yet, so... I'll settle for RPing in Atlas City? XD
Quote:I tend to agree, but I'm sure there are those who would argue that Character Story trumps Character Level (an argument I've heard *many* times in the past). That's a different debate for a different day, though.
Quote:Most common entry-points for new players are via Kings Row (generally between levels 6 and 8, but accessible at level 1), Port Oakes for villains and Studio 55 for Praetorians (through a manhole just underneath a staircase.)
Also, the Good vs. Evil Edition includes a power that lets you teleport to Pocket D.
Just about every roleplayer has an opinion of Pocket D, and they're all pretty much justifiable. Pocket D is the closest approximation to a tavern scene on Virtue. Similar in a few ways to the Jester back on Earthen Ring, but actually a lot better overall.
I encourage you to give it a try. -
... also my global is @Insane V. I want to be global friends with all of you who've posted so far.

Quote:Nice. By the way, I noticed you're from my hometown.I was part of the Green Dragon Inn RP community for 4 years -- all we knew back then was Free-form, since that was all the internet chatrooms we used seemed to be able to do. I ran a very complex and entertaining storyline that spanned two years (real time); it was all FFRP.
Quote:Personally, I never have my characters know one another, save on perhaps basis of reputation. They'll never actually have an opportunity to interact in-game, so there's no real point in having their storylines merge and/or intersect.
Quote:Considering I don't even know what the RP hotspots are for COH yet, I suppose I'll just have to RP wherever I find myself! (Which is what I usually do anyway, but that's beside the point!) I agree, though, get outside the box sometimes, you never know what (or who) you might find.
The other big place for a lot of RP cliques tends to be the SG/VG base. The biggest problem I had with my previous active VG (I won't name names publicly but I'm sure anyone on this forum knows them; they're notorious for godmoding and making life frustrating in general) was that they would do an AE arc and then sit in their base for hours on end, just standing around and presenting their characters into awkward situations for laughs. Sometimes they wouldn't do an arc, they'd just retire to the base for a "meeting" that only concerned about 10 people max and left the rest of the VG twiddling their thumbs and waiting to go actually do something. Not my cup of tea.
Quote:I think every RP'er anywhere hates godmoders. In all honesty, I don't think any of my characters has ever straight-up "won" a fight. >.> Not that they're weak or that they're pushovers; they fight to a stalemate and the villain runs off to "live and fight another day". It happens all the time in the comics, so it makes sense. *lol*
I'll freaking do it. I'll buy us jackets!
Quote:You're not alone!
*chuckles*
While there are times that RP dictates a bit of in-base discussion, I much prefer to be out doing stuff that superheroes should do, especially when playing my main, Hero Prime.
My villain main is a demon overlord named Nalrok Ath'Zim. Visually, he's your basic big demon; horns, wings, plated leather, a few chains, spiked belt. Here, this should help.
Here are his level 50 Brute and level 38 MM incarnations, in order:
Now, personality-wise, he's not your stereotypical Demon Lord from The (Evil Place Name Here). He won't mock you, he won't laugh derisively as he sneers at you, and he most certainly won't (nor has he ever) uttered a sentence with the words "foolish" and "mortal" in it. The closest he's ever come to a remark of that nature was back when Solrac played; he called Solrac an 'impudent wretch.' Nalrok prefers to be polite and, rather than boast his strengths and accomplishments, he takes in what others have to say about themselves. He's more concerned with making strong allies and friends than running around and smashing apart the planet for his own amusement. Now, this doesn't mean he's not one evil son-of-a-b**ch. He'll kill anyone who tries to kill him and enjoy it. One of his favorite things is to plow his fist into his opponent's ribcage and rot them from the inside out with nether energies. He'll laugh, or chuckle, or even grin with excitement as he does it. Like any demon, he'll occasionally fly into an uncontrollable rage (Frenzy alignment power helps here) and won't stop tearing people's faces off until there's no one left but his allies.
(Hell, one time he actually ((with permission)) killed a character by picking them up by the shoulders and tearing them down the middle. Holy crap.)
*pant* Monologue complete on that one. My point, as I seem to have failed to make yet, is that my main villain isn't the type to sit in a black-stone throne and brood about how evil he is; he likes to meet evil people and considers every slaughter both a personal victory and a small vacation from reading his gargantuan library of tomes left by his bloodline. -

Quote:I suppose I should list specifics of what I used to do.I'm not sure *exactly* what you're looking for, but I'm new to the server, I have 20+ years of roleplaying experience (including Superheroes/Villains Unlimited, D&D, Iron/Jadeclaw, Deadlands, and a host of other traditional RPG's), and at 10+ years in online MMO's/MUD's/FFRP Forums and what-have-you. While I'm new to COH and all that it implies, I'm certainly no stranger to quality RP.
-I freeform RP. No rules, no WoD junk (those guys irritate me), no hit rolls, just flowing RP. Decisions on the fly. No governing body.
-I RP just about anything. I have such a wide variety of characters and each of their stories is different, with only a few knowing explicit information of one or two others.
-I'm all for open-zone RP. If you're gonna be a gamblin' man or bookie, why sit in the D? Go to St. Martial and spend some time sipping margaritas on a rooftop in Double Down while you write the papers for your 'family.' Military? Hang out in the troubled parts of Nerva or survey Grandville from it's outlying islands. (Be more creative, is the bullet point you should take away from this presentation)
-Don't freaking godmode. I know your character can shoot lightning from their eyes, mine can light people on fire with his breath! Equal opportunity fights and decisions. -
I feel like a leech for wanting to chime in on this, but I'll be posting some screenies later this evening... unless I missed the post where DB said she was sick of us.
