  1. I just want to add my heartfelt thanks to all the folks involved in the Mid's project over the years.

I have derived many, many hours of enjoyment from that program.

Thank you for all your hard work!
  2. Any dmg proc you can slot in a reasonably fast-charging click AoE will yield great results.

Purple damage procs are ridiculously good. 33% chance for 107 dmg vs. even cons. If you have a fast recharging PBAoE then the Armageddon fire dmg proc in particular is worth getting.

Theft of Essence is superb in Dark Regen. It turns that massive end hog of a power into a potential end bar filler.

The Explosive Strike procs are great in AoE dmg powers that do knockback, especially targeted AoEs. You can 5-slot the Posi set (with its nrg dmg proc), get the recharge bonus and slot the Explosive Strike, too. It's great when both procs go off on multiple targets. Same reasoning goes for the Impeded Swiftness proc.

The Grav Anchor chance for hold is awesome in AoE immobs.

The Lockdown chance for +mag 2 hold is great in Choking Cloud, Volcanic Gasses, and Poison Trap.

The Soulbound Allegiance chance for buildup is great in pet powers that summon multiple pets: imps, PA, Gremlins, etc. It has a 16% chance (vs 5% for all the other BU procs like Decimation and Gaussian's) to fire on every pet attack. The buff only affects the particular pet that initiated the proc, but still, it's a nice damage and tohit buff for your pets. It's the only thing that will buff PA, too (other than standard enhancement slotting, obviously). If the pet has any AoE attacks then the proc has a chance to fire for every target. It is insane on WS's Dark Extraction pets. I often see the buff stack. Oh, it also has a 16% chance to buff you when you summon the pets.

You can leverage procs particularly well on builds that specialize in recharge. My perma-eclipse Warshade has that Armageddon proc in her Dwarf Mire. She can fire that off every 5 seconds, it has a 15 foot radius and a 10 target cap. That's a LOT of opportunities for an extra 107 damage.
  3. Please elaborate on "name field". Do you mean the text entry window at the very top? Or the nested list of items in the left column? Because I have wanted a feature like this forever, had no idea it existed, and can't check in-game from this computer.
  4. As long as you don't exemp more than 3 levels below the level of the LotG enhancement you will get the bonus, regardless of whether the power it is slotted in is active or not.

  5. BU + Aim + a bit of defiance makes for a pretty damaging fire breath. It's not an I Win Button or anything, but it will lay down some hurt for sure.

Sometimes I target near, sometimes far. Really, for me it's about getting stuff fired off as fast as possible. I usually frantically tab to the next target (usually being on the verge of death myself), then line myself up based on that target's location. Combat Jumping + Hurdle allows me to position myself quickly. I haven't IO'd my fire/MM blaster yet, so I am relying on the old blaster survival standby: Safety through Maximum Firepower.

I've been playing a looooong time (75 month badge), so I've become fairly adept at lining up cones. My blaster has three in his arsenal (fire breath, psi scream, and static discharge). All of them make liberal use of dmg/range Hami-O's. Lots of range makes cones much more practical, although you do have to watch out for aggro on the group behind the one you're targeting.

Take some time in a low-level hazard zone to play around with gauging the range and the arc of your cones. Pretty quickly you'll just instinctively know the best angle for hitting all of a big group.

One little trick that can come in handy if you find yourself in the middle of a big group (especially true on melee character cones) is to target someone in the middle of a group, jump straight up, and fire your cone at the top of your jump. Congrats, you just turned your cone into a ghetto PBAoE.
  6. I hate to say it, but it could very well be your vidcard.

I don't know enough about the dual-GPU GTX 295 to say for sure, but I have a 2GB GTX 285 and they are unfortunately notorious for black screen crashes. I get this problem fairly frequently, alas. From my poking around on the web in various vidcard and vidgame forums, it seems that the current thinking is the on-card voltage regulation is kinda wonky and occasionally undervolts the card, causing a crash. I do not know enough about computers to comment on the plausibility of this theory, I'm only relating what my research has turned up.

If you can't alleviate the problem via game settings, drivers, improving airflow, or by slightly underclocking the card (my current workaround, though not foolproof) then you might want to consider RMA'ing the card if it is still under warranty. Mine isn't. Boo.

I use EVGA's Precision overclocking tool to slightly underclock my card and bump up the fan settings. It doesn't solve the problem entirely, but it seems to lessen the frequency of crashes.

Of course, your card may not be to blame at all. But keep it in mind if less-drastic solutions than RMA'ing the card aren't working.

    Good luck!

There is a right answer. There is a wrong answer. Go roll a ****ing blaster is not even remotely close to relevant to the question, yet this is what we're getting here.
I lol'd. Well said, Misaligned. Well said.

  9. Just came across this thread. All I can say is "Wow!" Super-cool move on your part, Organica! I would +rep you if I could. And pure class on your part, Dechs, turning down the stuff you don't need. This is why I love the CoX community.

Congrats, Dechs! I remember following your "Journey of a New Warshade" thread. I had a lot of fun posting in that thread and got a lot of great information from it, too. Glad to see you are still enjoying your 'shade. Have fun raining (even more) massive purple death on your foes!
  10. I was having a similar problem. My character and world gfx would freeze if I adjusted some of the gfx sliders. Not all of the sliders would cause a hang, though. I can't remember all of the sliders that did it, but most of the new UM sliders did it, especially AO settings and advanced shadow settings. This was before the latest patch. I updated my drivers, to no avail. The new patch fixed some of the issues but the UM sliders can still cause it but not every time. So weird.

What's really strange is that only the character and environment gfx freeze. My UI works fine, I can hear powers activate, I can see other player's names run by (but not the character itself). It's quite bewildering. Any ideas?

Also, I just can't get worked up about not hitting 45%. For me 40% is good enough. An extra 5% chance to hit me, come on, give them a chance, lol.
Before you decide to make do with not hitting the softcap you really should read this:

Excellent! I am always open to suggestions, albeit reasonably courteous ones. Please give me advice. Hopefully it won't run into the multiple billions, lol. I am by no means poor, but I am trying to put together several other builds on a few characters, so I am already looking at spending a metric crapton of inf.

The build in question was slightly modified from a strictly softcap def one, i.e. the recharge was tacked on in a minor respec as I was trying to re-use as many IO's as I could (I hate respeccing and accumulating all the parts necessary). But if you can show me some good changes that give a fairly reasonable return on investment then I am all ears!

    Here's the current build again:

  13. Hmm, perhaps we are not on the same page here.

I am confused about your end numbers. I'm looking at the build right now and I have the following toggles running: deflection, battle agility, CJ, AAO, tough, weave, and grant cover. My end usage calculates to 0.97/sec. Add FA and it's 1.42/sec (sustainable for a reasonable span of time). Further adding super speed (which is really unnecessary, IMO) raises it to 1.78/sec. Add sprint in there and it's 2.07/sec, which is totally unsustainable. I don't get where your 1.7 figure comes from... I can tell you this, though: I run everything but sprint, SS and FA in combat and have exactly ZERO end woes. Occasionally I will turn on FA for hard targets, but that's not often since I have the Kismet: +Tohit. And looking at my in-game numbers (and my live build exemps to level 39, keep in mind) my end usage is 0.98/sec and gross recovery is 3.12/sec. Are we looking at the same build?

I will grant that your build is mostly better in terms of sheer raw numbers (although the extra downtime in hasten is questionable). You state that 5-slotting hasten for rech and "overslotting" tough (please note the def bonuses I am getting out of it at that slotting) is somehow wasted. I submit that getting 5% extra global recharge, some unneeded recovery and energy torrent for a mere 4 billion inf above the cost of mine is a poor return on investment. I realize the OP said money is no object, but come on...

Ultimately we are of differing opinions on this, which is totally fine. My defensiveness arises from your snarky implication that my build sucks. It objectively doesn't. I can farm the living snot out of Battle Maiden and Council Empire maps AND contribute mightily to teams. Please don't imply otherwise to folks.

    Just sayin'...

The second one is pretty bad too. You're way over the cap in melee and range. If you have that many slots to spare, why not just max out DDR?

For as much as you're planning to spend, these two builds are disappointing. Sorry for being blunt, but I'd rather steer you clear of making billions of inf in investment and get such an awful return for it.

You can do *a lot* better.
OK, I have to reply to this. I am the owner of the first build and it is most assuredly NOT awful.

First of all, the end usage isn't 1.71/sec. If you decide you want to run sprint and FA all the time it is, but why would you do that? The end usage in normal play is .97/sec, for a net recovery of 2.06/sec. I can fight all freakin' day long with that amount of recovery.

Second of all, you are spending about 2 billion more influence for a whopping 5% more recharge and 2 extra slots to play with. You have a 5-slot set of hecatomb and a 5-slot set of ragnarok, as well as 2 membranes and a numina's unique that I don't have. All to save you 1.1 second on the recharge (25.5 sec vs. 26.6 sec) of LR and SC and get you an unnecessary 0.73 end/sec. Oh, you'd also get energy torrent and an extra 8.4 hp/sec. And an extra 2.6 seconds of downtime on hasten.

I mean, if that's worth 1.9 billion extra inf (at lowest of last 5 recipe - not crafted - cost as of 10:45 am 3/13/10) then by all means feel free.

EDIT: Holy crap! I didn't even see the glad armor +def in your build! Yeah, that thing sells for 2 billion on the market, if you can even find one. Those things mostly sell off-market for WAY more than 2 billion these days. But I'll be generous and call it 2 billion. If the extra benefits of Fury's build are worth 3.9 billion more inf to you then be my guest. LOL.

EDITEDIT: Let me be clear: I am not claiming my build is anywhere near the end-all, be-all of elec/sd builds. I am sure someone could come up with a better, cheaper build. I AM sure, however, that my build isn't awful and was frankly insulted when you claimed it was, Fury. You may want to consider a little less arrogance and condescension in the future.

Purples are unsurpassed for recharge bonuses. If your build needs maximum recharge, purples are the way to go.

You ask if any AT's really benefit from purples. Ill/rads and warshades get the most benefit, IMO. I purpled my WS before prices went absolutely insane. She has perma-hasten, perma-eclipse, perma-three-pets (with 4 for about 15 seconds), perma-human mire, dwarf mire up every 5 seconds, quasar up every 90 seconds and unchain essence up every 60. She delivers massive purple death while sitting at 85% resistance all the time. She's a lot of fun.

  16. Here's my current live build. It's pretty ridiculous. It ain't cheap, but it has capped def and perma-hasten (technically it isn't perma, but since I can't autofire it anyway due to having Active Def on auto I figure it's close enough). Build Up, Shield Charge and lightning Rod are up every 26.6 seconds. I can farm Battle Maiden at +4 x8 with ease. I love, love, LOVE this build.

  17. OK, how about this question:

Does the 60 month/loyalty program beta criteria apply to this closed beta or only to the upcoming GR beta? I'm fairly certain it doesn't, but there seems to be some confusion amongst the long-time playerbase. Some official clarification would be nice, just to tamp down the confusion.

I, too, was REALLY looking forward to testing ultra mode and thought I would be in the beta for it (I just got my 69 month badge). I was under the impression that ultra mode was part of Going Rogue. I'm not complaining that it's not (since it means we will get it sooner), I'm just a little confused.

All we need is a redname to come and say "The 60 month players and loyalty program players are not automatically eligible for the i17 beta. They ARE automatically eligible for GR beta." Ta da! Confusion solved.

    Fire / Mental?

I haven't built this yet, but it's my next project: Softcapped to ranged, 44.4% to AoE, 32.5% recharge. And not ungodly expensive, either. Not cheap, mind you, but not absurd.

  19. Late-game and IOs allow SD to pull way, WAY ahead of SR. As Fury Flechette said, with IO's, there's nothing SR can do that SD can't.

I have a softcapped elec/shield. He is an AoE damage powerhouse, steamrolling everything in his path. Shield Charge and AAO make it possible. Just tonight I reworked his build in Mid's to give him softcapped defense AND perma-hasten. Show me an SR that can compete with that.

    Edit:
Also, I'd heard something about this set being buggy with regard to lower-than-level 50 pets (any of the multi-pet powers). Is that still true? What was/is the story there?

    thanks!
The buff only applies to the pet that triggered the proc. It doesn't carry over to all the pets simultaneously.

As to the minus-level and non-50 pets? I really can't say. I only have experience with Phantom Army and Extracted Essences, both of which are my level. I seem to recall that they fixed the bug for imps. If so, I'd imagine it would work in MM T1 & T2 pets.

    Massive damage.

Blaster melee attacks hit really, really hard. They allow you to chain a bunch of high damage attacks together in a hurry if you need to. For example there are only two single-target, non-snipe blasts that do more damage than bonesmasher: blaze and blazing arrow. And bonesmasher is the middle-damage attack from EM. Total focus does considerably more.

Staying at range offers a degree of protection, namely keeping you away from enemies' big melee attacks. But so does closing to melee and just pulverizing stuff into a fine red mist very quickly.
  22. It also has a 16% chance to buff YOU when you summon a pet.

It's freakin' amazing in a pet with AoE attacks. It has a chance to proc on every enemy fired upon. I very frequently see it stack on my Warshade's fluffies.
  23. To answer the question in your thread title, yes, it does work. I think, however, you may get more benefit from some slightly different power picks and slotting arrangements.

First of all, as others have said, ditch fitness. It is totally unnecessary on a warshade and is precluding you from getting some really good powers. It only functions in human form and you have the single best downtime-reducing power in the game, Stygian Circle. Its heal numbers are very strong out of the box so my recommendation is slotting for end mod. As Microcosm said, put the Efficacy Adaptor end mod/end red in there - at a minimum. With 3 power picks available by dropping fitness you could get some very useful powers. Gravitic Emanation is a great cone stun, and it stacks well with Inky Aspect for perma-stunning bosses. It is also a good place for the Absolute Amazement purple set, if money is tight (those purple damage sets are crazy-expensive these days). Starless Step is helpful for removing a troublesome mob from his buddies. Unchain Essence is GREAT on high-recharge builds

Slotting end mods in the forms is a fantastically small return on investment. I find it to be completely unnecessary. Maybe put an end reducer in the default slot for Nova (it could also be a flight speed, a Freebird: stealth, a Gaussian's chance for build up, etc.). For Dwarf form, consider slotting 4 res/end reds. That ED caps your res and end reduction and saves you 2 slots.

This is a big one: Swap the sets you have in Quasar and Dwarf Mire! Oblit offers pathetic end reduction enhancement. Your mire recharges in 5.33 seconds. This is a recipe for blue bar woes. Armageddon is much better suited for Mire. Slot all the Armageddons but the straight damage one, and add a dmg/end red form another set in the 6th slot. That gives good enhancement numbers AND gets that sweet, sweet 33% chance for 107 fire dmg proc in there, going off every 5.44 seconds. Trust me, it's fantastic in that power on a high-recharge build. The Oblit set set is very good for a nuke, since endurance reduction is kind of a moot point on a nuke.

If you can get some more recharge from other sets you are able to slot in new powers after ditching fitness then you would be able to slot Grav Well for damage. This is an age-old warshade player argument, lol. I fall squarely in the Grav Well-as-damage camp. It hits REALLY hard with a Crushing Impact set in it, especially buffed with 2 Mires.

Shadow Cloak's defense numbers are pretty low, and you will be at the res cap permanently, so slotting it for defense seems wasteful. I recommend just the LoTG global recharge in there. The set bonuses the other 3 LoTGs give are nice, but not necessarily worth the slots.

Slot your Fluffies with 4 Expedient Reinforcements (all but the dmg/end and the res aura) and Soulbound Allegiance dam/rech and chance for build up. That BU proc is ABSURDLY good in Fluffies. First of all, it has a 16% chance to go off for every enemy fired on. Second, Fluffy uses AoE attacks (so the proc goes off a lot. I mean A LOT, a lot.) Third, you will have 3 Fluffies out, spamming BU-buffed attacks constantly. Make sure you keep your pet window open and have the pet buff icons visible. You'll see the BU icon all the time. I often see it STACK on my Fluffies, lol. It's so good...

Here's my current live build. It may give you some ideas.

  24. Welcome to Club Ebil!

See the Sergeant-at-Arms for the secret handshake and the key to the executive washroom.
  25. It sounds a lot like the PSU problem I had a couple weeks ago. My computer would be running normally, then poof! It would just shut off instantly, no warning, just off. It then would not turn on at all, unless it felt like it.

I, too, was unsure if it was a PSU issue. I first suspected heat, so I blew out all my fans and grilles and vents and such, to no avail. I was able to confirm with reasonable certainty that it was a PSU problem when my PSU made a sizzling noise, began belching large clouds of acrid white smoke, then made a loud pop before I yanked the power cord out. Yeah, I was bummed. I was also surprised since it was one the higher-end brands, a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750. I've never heard of one of their units nuking itself. Oh well.

I RMA'd it since it was still under warranty and wanted to be sure that nothing else was damaged in the meltdown. FWIW, the builder I purchased it from, Digital Storm, has been fantastic with regards to handling this issue. Very communicative and good about keeping me up-to-date on things. They actually called me - on an actual telephone! - to let me know that they had fixed everything (in five days) and to inquire about which method they should use to ship it back. Not an email, a phone call from an actual live person. I give Digital Storm my wholehearted endorsement. Having to pay for shipping was a bummer, though.

I hope your situation goes less dramatically than mine.

EDIT: Please ignore previous endorsement! The RMA process with the builder, Digital Storm, has turned very, very sour. I was initially quite impressed with them, but they have fed me bad information on several occasions now. They have made zero effort to make any amends for BS'ing me, too. I had been touting them highly in the past, but I can't give them my endorsement any longer. I will not do business with them again, despite their reputation for customer service.
