  1. Well i can't speak for Twilight because i have nor seen it (although am aware of the derision aimed at it). Re: WW the 70's series, you've only got to watch some of the episodes and it won't be long before you come across a cringe-worthy moment that was so ingrained in seventies filming re: the portrayal of women. Its not intentionally written so... but it was written by guys in the seventies and it just falls prey to it time after time.

Of course it wasn't so obvious then to audiences & only in retrospect and looking back from a cultural viewpoint you can see how dated the show is. A new WW Tv show would require an entirely fresh treatment for the character to work.

Exactly the kind of creative rush that had me do an introduction course, a part-time 32-week 3DS Max course last Sept '09 to June '10... And wow is it complex!, I mean to get a really good animation of a decent length with a high poly model and all the animation weighted and timed right to look realistic with real world physics. Definately gave me a new respect for the ridiculous amount of work that goes into every frame times 24 of every second times every render pass of every animation. Nightmare.

Makes you realise that a lot of these animations are truely collaborations of a great many specialised artists; modellers, texture artists, animation artists, vfx artists, enviromental artists and script programmers. No mans a mountain but subscribing to digitaltutors.com, gnomon workshop.com or lynda.com helps.
  3. Your highest freefall in gameworld distance would probably be from somewhere in The Shadow Shards.
  4. One post and we're full-circle back to the ingrained 70's sexism that has had the character in limbo for so long.

(by the way thats not aimed at you Nericus, more an observation of the style of the 1970s show and how.... or if... the character can be moved on from Marston's 1940s origins).

    Linky.
  5. Yes, The Introduction of psionic blasters and the world of confusion power had me rolling a GL knock-off named 'Pink Ring'.
Yes he was in-character as somewhat camp, yes he had an outragious bio parodying the GL-lore and him being bestowed a pink ring by a dying alien and reporting to Ooh-ahh for training.

To be honest, the parody became tiring after a while, even if he did get quite a few "LOL !!!" pm'd to him on sight. Deleted out of boredom tbh.
  6. EU Shelf presence !. I'll say this again for Paragon Marketing that claims that digital distribution for the overseas market is just as effective these days - for the architect edition, for the GR expansion; EU SHELF PRESENCE.

My story is one of pure coincidence. March 2005 I was returning an unwanted title to my local gamestation store and was after a specific replacment. They did not have the title i was after and was on my way out of the shop when the boxed product on the shelf caught my eye.

I stayed subscribed for over five years and thoroughly got caught up in everthing 'City of'.
If the same scenario happened today I would most probably never of tried it because.... well, all us EU vets know how things are. I would be straight to Champions or DCUO because they have/will have boxes on shelves over here, and I would of missed out on one hell of an MMO - just as there are plenty of potential subscribers that are missing out here now and are unaware of GR and its supporting MMO 'City of Heroes'.
  7. Well, i won't jump on the portrayal bandwagon as we already have plenty of those threads.

But a Tv show has gotta capitalise on the cliffhanger whether it be a future Live action Batman tv show, wonder woman or my personal favourite.... Spidey. The latter i think I don't think they should of rebooted it back to Ultimate teeny Spiderman for a film in 2012 but instead just recast and continued on in the form of a tv show.

The weekly TV superhero shows with their superb cliffhangers that had you talking about them in school the next day were superb, we really need to get back to that golden age of presenting the genre instead of ploughing hundreds of millions into live action films that may or may-not work and reboot ad nauseum a'la Marvel (Hulk) or DC (Superman) when they fall short of expectation. I used to love the Incredible Hulk TV series and the way that was filmed as an arching story with great cliffhangers, and it was excrutiating that you had to wait a whole week until next Saturday night to find out what happened!.

WW?, could work!. I'll be honest and say that i'm not exactly counting the days to a live action redux. In my opinion the seventies version worked only because it was broadcast then, that special time that was the seventies when sexism and camp was viewed as the acceptable norm and a fashion/lifestyle. I don't know what spin they could put on it now but it would have to be suitably modern and take the DC character seriously.
  8. Awww... :'( - That Sintel's really sad, i saw the twist coming though.

The Blender Foundation always does the best work to showcase their product, no surprise there, Their last effort was 2 years ago with Big Buck Bunny which proves the software can rival Maya or 3DS Max for character-driven cgi animation.

You can check out all the blender stuff at www.blender.org which has a videos page on features and gallery.

Its a shame that when getting into the industry the only programs that are seriously entertained are 3DS Max for architectual visualisation and games design and Maya for film and TV SFX animation. I suppose its just a case of Autodesk grabbing that marketshare right from the outset and consolidating when they bought up Maya for the suite.
Still.... for work outside of that racket and especially for freeware, Blender does look seriously good.

    Let me in

Film4 recently screened 'Let the right one in' over here and i watched it.
The subtitles from swedish didn't bother me as i have enjoyed plenty of subtitled chinese films, but i did find the film a bit of a slow-burner storywise. Anyone expecting vampiric action is going to be sorely disappointed as the vampire explanations were in dialogue between the little boy and his new-found friend.

Chloe was a good choice to portray this character though in a remake and i'm glad she's been signed to play Emily the Strange as well.

[Edit]: Review of 'Let Me In' courtesy current.com.
  10. Awww,... and theres me thinking this was a celebratory haircut thread!.

This new mechanic could be useful for many kinds of powers. Here are some:

Knockback Control: clicking a KB power will make it cause knockdown. Charging up a KB power will make it cause knockback. Greater charge causes more knockback.

Full Auto/Flamethrower: the power will fire until you release the button, or to the previous maximum length of the animation. Allows for a quick escape.

Snipes: While you are charging up your snipe the power can be interrupted. With a greater charge you cause more damage. Release early to avoid being interrupted, or to use the snipe as a more conventional attack, with less damage.

I'm sure many other uses can be found for such a mechanic and I hope it's taken into consideration for future powersets, if not for existing ones.
City of Heroes should play to its strengths and not try to emulate features of Champions-Online that the engine or gameplay would struggle to accomodate. That said it shouldn't be so proud as to snub features which could potentially explore an evolution of our gameplay.

Personally I'd say no to a charge-up mechanic, but would be open to a customisable block of sorts being added to every class to mitigate some of the damage when low on end and make combat that bit more strategic.
  12. For everyone that has mentioned SW:ToR and animation of that quality, i can tell you they animate in 3Ds Max and their extensive showreel can be found here. Its pretty much a whos who of reputable work, Sw:ToR, Marvel Ultimate alliance, Fable intro cinematics, If you've been wow'd by it - its most probably Blur's work.

And no, I would not pay to watch a series of dislocated cutscenes strung together by loose narrative or crappy storyline poured into the jellymold of a film structure. But yes I would pay to see a good animated film. If it worked for Final Fantasy:The spirits within way back in 2001 it would work now.
  13. Oh good grief!, you have got to be kidding me! - the Air Force top brass must be laughing their heads-off come every presentation day waiting to see whats next.

Our Ministry of Defence had been rolling out Skynet since before there was any connection with a rise of the machines, Nov 1969 to be precise.

  15. Nicely done everyone!, that was the cleanest, quickest, most incident free Hami-Raid i've seen this side of the Hamidon Redux!. Great job!.

    Thanks and congratulations Lady Arete!.

Our chemical propulsion technology would not work because we would run out of fuel; a): if launched from Earth, somewhere around Mars - or b): If constructed in orbit and fuelled there, somewhere before we left our local system.

The only propulsion tech that we have experimented with is ion propulsion and solar sails pushing off of starlight or a base-laser beam. The former being very slow at building up speed, and the latter (as far as i'm concerned) in both forms is totally unsuitable for independant deep space travel. Space is full of debris and other hazards travelling at ridiculous speeds. A rocky grain of space dust can punch holes in solar sails and sheet metal when its travelling at tens of thousands of mph.

If we did work out some kind of nuclear fusion or ion-drive, then we would still have to contend with the fact that this would be a generational ship that would have the entire onboard population to go through many generations of decendants before it reached its destination.

Problem 1: motivation and training en route with a loss of incentive re: the target destination.

Problem 2: Gravity. Unless a decent gravity can be generated onboard, the humans would not have the strength to disembark anywhere with gravity because their bones would shatter like the finest most fragile glass. Even after 10 months in orbit current astronauts/cosmonauts lose 40% of their bone density which is why they are practically carried away by ambulance on return.

But consider this: even though as a species we're currently distracted and unmotivated, if science was able to give us near-certain knowledge of a real Earth-like planet out there that'd be the kind of thing we'd need to actually get our collective butts in gear and actually try to go there.

It's hard to motivate people to work hard for no pay off - we need an actual cool place to try to get to as an ultimate goal. You might consider the Moon or Mars a worthy enough goal at first, but we already know both of those places are relatively barren and inhospitable. A second Earth would make us actually want to get to the Moon and Mars first as a stepping stone to the stars.
Four things will force us to take expansion of our species more seriously.

1): The exponential expansion in World population and the starvation therein.
2): The total depletion of mineral resources.
3): When a large asteroid hitting shows us that we cannot afford to stay exclusively on our homeworld.
4): The expansion of our own star to Red Giant status in 5 billion years which consumes our solar system. If we haven't got our ship together by then, then i absolutely despair and reckon we deserve to go extinct.

Never gonna get there until Warp theory is realised, and thats never gonna happen until Mankind makes an astonishing breakthrough in a capable new powersource, and we are unfortunately far more likely (given our track record) to blow ourselves up through new said technology through war.

I used to love to speculate about stuff like this, but the more you research it the more you find that we are still a pretty low-tech and basic species, still dependant on dead plant and animal remains for the majority of our power sources.

I'd say concentrate on major outposts on the Moon and Mars to avoid the 'all your eggs in one basket' doomsday scenario - and then lets see where technology is in a thousand years or so.
One things for certain. As long as we let our differences divide us here on our own home planet, we haven't a hope in hell of making the steps we should be doing as a species.

Aww thats a shame. Theres another vote right there then to start over with the Cryptic2 engine.

does COH take place in the 1970s?
Yes, Although Stephan & Marcus (as Recluse and Statesman) go back to their origins in the 1930s, the modern-day CoH is set in the late seventies / early-to-mid eighties:
    Quote:
Sometime before the 1980s, the Freedom Phalanx disbanded, later coming back together with the Statesman, Dr. Raymond Keyes (Positron), Justin Sinclair (Manticore), Steven Berry (Synapse), and Shalice Tilman (Sister Psyche) to battle evil in Paragon City once again.
You can read all about them in the CoH novels 'The Web of Arachnos' & 'The Freedom Phalanx'.
  22. Sewer system hasn't been mentioned has it?, using the city's own infrastructure against itself.
Kinda repellant in enviroment, Religious overtones re: Hell and danger coming from underground, and springing up to surprise/snatch you before disappearing back down.

Gene Hackman's Luther setup (abandoned underground railway station) was kinda cool. Refurbished to be very opulant and luxurious. He even had a monologue ready for what 'people were shelling out for a few measly...' above ground.

And finally, Carry Friend (available at level 20 and with two other powers):
What would this power pool be without being able to carry someone?
As Steampunkette has already mentioned, this is an impossibility. The very thought I must say somewhat amuses me. I'd definately invest some slots in 'Piggy-back'.
  24. Considering lv52 & 53 Peri/Nucleo & Golgi's go for upwards of 90 million a pop easy, If you did have any one those, you could easily fund a good starting proportion of your new build. I'm hearing noises across global channels that have vets stating they've easily spent 3 billion + on a purply build.

And where are all those high level Hami's? - As an alternative to purple-builds, a dual 38.7% enhancement is not to be sniffed at.
