Quote:... I get the feeling that you're going to be waiting for a long time if that's where you're looking for your answers.Yeah, very small thing. I had to look very hard to notice it. And I've yet to see anything that makes me believe either Resistance or Loyalists are the real good guys. Hence I'm still on the fence about which side to join, until we get some more info...
*looks at marketing*
I don't think they're going to tell us. I think that's kind of the point. Praetoria seems like it's not going to be a cut-and-dried, easy answers kind of place... if it -were-, they'd have made someone like Penelope Yin or her ilk the leader of the resistance... rather than Calvin Scott, massive jerk.
(shrugs) -
I will join in on the chorus of bravos, with just one tentative caveat.
These missions are awesome. they do things I've not seen before, they have -scenery- I've not seen before (not sure if it's new, but it's new to -me-), and they are in all ways a blast.
My one worry is that this is just a hook for us, like the varied missions that show up early on heroside, or the plethora of cutscenes you get early as a villain, that later on seem to get thinner and thinner until you get to the high levels.
I would love for missions like this to become the new norm, and I very much hope they will.
I will be -really ticked- if this is another round game-tease, though. ;p -
... you can see the irony in that statement, right? No? maybe a little?
It seems a little odd to me that you're a determined bandwagon-avoider... who cares at all whether there's a group of people that avoid bandwagons. Of course, you could just be trying to avoid the anti bandwagon bandwagon (hint: there is -very much- an anti bandwagon bandwagon. And it's axles are creaking. You are assuredly not the only one.), but it kind of seems like you're looking for company in your individualism.
I can agree with you to a degree, of course- it does feel a little lame to make one of a billionty FOTM heroes, because that takes a little away from the special-ness of getting to make your own hero... but the upside is that your Dual Pistols character will be unlike mine, who will be unlike the next guys, because they were made by different people. or, if you must, 'sheeple'.
We are all beautiful unique snowflakes, comfortingly wrapped in sheeplike wool. This is the human condition.
When it comes right down to it, like other people have said, the best way to go is to do what you think is awesome, -because- you think it's awesome... not because someone else does or does not do something. -
Free ones.
Seriously, I'm probably waaay late to any kind of outrage party here after my CoH sabbatical, but I still think it's cheesy and lame to be putting things we used to regularly get for free into paid content packs.

edit:
... and still, I buy them. >.< -
If it were me, I'd encourage him to get in now, while there is -less- content.
Why? Well, I've only got myself to go on, but I love getting new -stuff-. He starts playing now, he has the game as-is. Then in a few weeks, the graphics get a boost, demon summoning drops in (if he's prepurchased GR), new enemies and such, updates to some of the stuff- this is kind of a big update. The three months later, GR will drop. Lotsa new stuff. Then three months after that, we get I19 and the Incarnate system- handy if he's the kinda person to get to 50 in that time. I know of folks that can.
The point being if he comes in now then he gets to see some pretty active and rapid progression. if he shows up after GR then... maybe. it depends on the dev's schedule post I19.
Might be a god hook for him, anyhow.
Though less of a persuasive argument you can use, I suppose... -
I'm glad that I'm not the only person who was wondering about that. ;p
I don't know if they'll remove it for geometry reasons, since as people have pointed out the difference would be minimal, but they may want to make the floor actually reflective and make us feel less like vampires every time we walk in there.
(Removal of this aspect would of course be rather less neat for anyone whose character is, in fact, a vampire. ;p)
I assume they'll leave it as-is, though, with a big semi-transparent surface of something non-reflective underfoot and a bizarrely unsettling lack of reflection for all who visit.
(It's only unsettling for the visitors. It's been a well known fact for some time now that city employees have their souls removed when they are hired, and thus have no reflection anyway.) -
I would just like to say thanks to everyone who's helped out so far (especially for the very favourable ratings I've been getting) - the comments have been very helpful, and should work to iron out some kinks in the arc as is.
Now I need to get the hang of custom group creation, and how to balance their difficulty somewhere between 'walkover' and 'zOMG I die'. ;p
Also, spelling. >.>
Thanks again! -
Hey folks- Just finished my first mission arc worth showing anyone, and thought I'd run it past the good folks of the forum and get some feedback.
Something strange is happening to a gang of Trolls in Paragon City, and Officer Parks has asked for your help to get to the bottom of the problem. You set out to find out what's going on and discover the terrifying truth behind the incidents...
Arc # 385510, ojin m - any and all feedback welcomed!

Quote:Wellp, I'm someone who's just returned from exile, during which time I was playing a certain Similar But Different game... which I'm still running an account on, mind you. It's an interesting phenomenon.I heard this repeated at least once an hour as the inevitable end to the conversation that began, "Well, I switched to [competing game]..." The only time that players were in any way positive about those other games was when they were describing features that were also strong CoH features, such as a certain other superhero game's character creator. Even then, it was usually in the context of "But it was ripped off from CoH."
This illustrates an important facet of the 'City of' franchise's customer loyalty. The game trades heavily on its quality and featureset maturity. This will be an important subject to keep in mind as the game continues to age, especially when integrating new features into it. If the quality of the game degrades significantly for any given reason, it could have a larger effect than you might initially think.
What I love most about CoX, and what I found I missed when I was away from it, is the story focus. Unusually for many of the MMOs I've played, it feels like the lore, the world and the characters within it- both the NPC and the PCs- have weight. A real story seems like it's being told here. I can get angry at some of the things Longbow do, root around in the lore and the mission text to work out what's going to happen as the plot unfolds, and have my characters really feel like a part of that.
I'm a complete plot (bleep), so I love it, and I'm glad I have employment enough to re-up my sub. Are there other things I enjoy in other games? Of course! But none of them give me the story fix that I feel from CoX. ^_^ -
Yups, he takes comissions, but he can be notoriously hard to get to in time. ^-^; I actually got this done at A-Kon this year, it just took me a while to get around to coloring it. One of the traditional hallmarks of visiting the con is the rush to the AP table as soon as the dealers room opens. This year I -finally- managed to get one. ;p
I'll have to see if I can't get my friend to put his Fred comission (of one of his CoH characters, this time) up as well... -
That was... rather awesome. Those have always been great scenes, and seeing them edited together like that just brings home a lot of the whole... bombastic nature of the CoH / CoV plotline. ;p
Good stuff! -
In the interests of showing off, I thought that I'd post this, a comission of my main villain drawn by the ever-awesome Fred Perry.
I colored it and such myself... I think Fred really captured her attitude. Hope y'all like! -

If you do leave them targettable, can we at least knock them around a bit (not hurt/maim/kill)? Pretty please with sugar on top? I just want to be able to knock them outta my way. Call it revenge for pushing my hero around. (i.e. set it up so when it comes to civies, all powers affect them like knockback/dizzy/holds/etc, whichever's appropriate for the AT)
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, any holds, knockback powers, etc, already do do that... though it -would- be nice if all powers did that, or something similar, so we could seem to have a little more impact on the citizens. As it is, if you don't have a decent hold / knockback power, you feel a little silly. ;p
However, civillians -do- scream and run from you. And they seem to be doing it a little more readily after the latest patch, though sadly on my last check I didn't have time to see if -all- the citizens were responding properly yet before I hit a sound-loop crash. -
Yeah, the Wanted poster isn't too explicit. It means 'Go break that villain out of jail'.
And even when I had that side mission, the time I've had it, freeing the villain didn't net me any extra time- which is a major drawback, given how -long- it takes to break the doors down without something like a brute there. ;p -
[ QUOTE ]
In fact, the violence would be pretty short since I'm guessing the civs don't have much in the way of xp.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's rather the problem, though. It's one thing to fight heroes and villains engaged in a struggle for control of a city or two.
It's quite an other for us to kill (or maim, or hospitalise) innocent civillians.
We all can like it or we can not, but the devs are, wisely, steering clear of it. Citizens can be hostages, and we can scare them and make them panic, but that's all. It's a 'comics code' level of 'violence'. Arguing about it isn't to likely to change that. ;p -

[ QUOTE ]
Nor do they change the rating of the game by allowing players to kill helpless civilians.
[/ QUOTE ]
Then why don't they disappear nice and clean, like when mobs get hit by a police drone? That would be much better than having a bunch of invincible civilians running around.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, I'd be happy if they just tightened up the civillian AI a little.
-Ideally- when you start firing off your powers, the citizens scream and run for cover in a nerby building. This is awesome, logical and a good compromise. We can't kill them at random, but we can scare the bejezus out of them (honestly, I prefer that to killing them, myself, too).
However, some citizens seem a little... oblivious. I've come across citizens that I can blast, knock back, sonic scream at, infect with radiation - but they'll still meander about their merry way as though I wasn't even there. If that bug gets unkinked, then it should make citizens getting in the way of things less of a problem, I imagine. -

I also said older more mature gamers need more than mindless smashing. what was meant by this is we need to get something out of destroying objects be it little xp (even if its very little), or even more time this would be at least something. (as it stands right now we only get extra time for not getting caught ( by beating the good guys up not for destroying objects).
[/ QUOTE ]
You might want to take another few passes at these missions again, and read up through the thread and/or the previews of the Mayhem missions. We do, in fact, get additional time for destroying objects in the missions.
For some reason, either by design or through current bugs, the time awarded isn't completely consistant. For example, blowing up -several- cars usually gains me a three minute bonus, as does several crates. But a single phone booth, mailbox or newspaper vendor usually gets me a minute. (All for the -first- time these things are destroyed. After that it all gets very vague and confusing. ;p)
The in-game rationale behind this is your villain 'drawing attention away' from the bank job itself. Plus then there's the subsidiary jobs that can be done throughut the stage, which is pretty nice.
I have to admit, though... currently what destruction nets what bonus... and what level of hero is intended to spawn after the bank raid... is pretty opaque to us. On live that's not nesecarily a bad thing, because it keeps us guessing. On test it's a little more of a problem... do we need to /bug the time awards and the boss spawns, or are they working as intended?
A little extra info on what we're to test might be helpful. ;p -
Of course, what Positron hasn't told you about is the super-secret badge that's available if you first kill 1000 Contaminated in Outbreak, then open 1000 presents.
(pauses)
That's a joke, people. Please, god, don't try to do that...
Oh, what the hey. Do it if you like. ;p -
Aaaa- now that's the kinda hint I need. ;p (headsmack) Aheheh...
-
No, it's 'where are the hellecopters'- we can figure the rest out then.
As opposed to playing "Wheres the holliday content". ;p
Not to sound ungrateful or anything, but if the content -is- on now, I can't see it winning any points with casual gamers. And if it's -not- on yet... isn't it getting a little late on the 15th? ^^; -
Well, sure he's hovering. That's obvious, but it ain't -funny-. ;p
Ponnyyyyy! -
