  1. Hmmm. First things that jump to mind:

    Avoid:
Robots/Force Field mastermind. It's just not that active. (It nearly bored me away from masterminds all together.)

    Consider:
    Bots/Traps, Thugs/Poison, Thugs/Dark masterminds.

Kheldians. If you're going for bigger groups, Warshades are geared more towards "more hordes" to buff from, while Peacebringers are smaller, harder targets (all buffs are self contained, IE, you won't miss a heal if it's recharged. Plus for both, Dwarf works as a breakfree.)

Some corruptors, though they do share a bit of the squishy. Ice/Dark Miasma is fun. (So is Fire/Dark.) Ice/Cold gives some nice buffs and debuffs, as well, but /dark (since they're toggled/placed) will help you as much solo. (You can't shield yourself.) Defenders if you want the debuff side of things early - solo, they get a damage boost (30%) that drops as you add people (to 0% at 4.)

Dominators. While squishy, you can counter some of that with your controls. Plus, of course, there's Domination to deal with mezzes. Depends on if you're tired of control or not.

And of course, tanks/brutes/scrappers for the "Just go in and punch things" of it.

    Defunct Origins?

Let's stick with "spooky supernatural" powers.
    Am I a god/demon/angel/FSM? To me, that's natural.
Am I a ghost? Natural, too. My walking through walls, etc. is just part of what I am.
Was I *granted* the powers by a god/artifact? Magic.
Am I "tapping into the netherworld" by use of the SuperShinyThingy I just made? I might be *summoning* ghosts... but I'm doing it by tech.
Am I using technology, but so steeped in mysticism I don't know better? Tech or magic. Depends how I see it. ("Technomage," basically.)
Was I born with an ability to make you see "ghosts"/amplify fears/etc that apparently nobody else has? Mutant.
  3. Well, what is it about the fire/kin you like so much? Probably a good place to start.

I guess I should be more clear. You are not allowed to change your original Archetype and I am fine with that. What I feel the game should allow (at least once) is the choice to change your powerset choices you were given when you created your character.

I have one character for instance that is Scrapper (which I do not need to change, or see any reason to do so), the powerset choices are Martial Arts and Regeneration, which I do not find very entertaining. Changing to Dark armor or Super reflexes, IMO, are much more fun combinations. But there is no way to do that.

I don't see how changing the powersets you choose at character creation, at least once in the life of the character, would present balance issues.

I can see, however, how open choice may present a problem in that respect.
Well, the devs (to my recollection) have put forward three reasons:

    1. As mentioned above, the whole "early/late blooming set" bit. They don't feel being able to switch between them would be good for the game. And

    2. The work they've put into making the game alt-friendly. I mean, look at it - up to 36 (soon to be 48, unless they change that) slots per server, 15 servers (13 English-speaking,) and *all of them usable* (unlike, for instance, Aion, which had a bunch of servers, lot of slots, but only 8 characters *ever* available, and you could only make one side per server.) Leveling isn't that hard, they've made it easier to store and swap items and INF between them, etc.

    3. Too much work to code (with too much possibility of things breaking) for the payback

And I'll give you reason 4, true now and more emphasized by the issue going live soon (tm) :

    4. It would work against being able to sell slot unlocks if you could have, essentially, multiple characters "in one" by changing a powerset.

There aren't a lot of William Hartnell (first doctor) episodes out there, but I find them - rather charming. Netflix *does* have them available - at least on DVD, not sure about streaming. (And actually the last time you see him - and finally in color! - is the movie "The three doctors," where he meets himself, then the original him - Hartnell - tries to give the other two hims pointers, as well as insulting them - so they basically watch him on TV. It's what the description brought to mind.)

Also, favourite rendition of the doctors:

which is scarily close to tell the actual actor by.

  7. Early, early in game history, there were no archetypes. You picked from what were closer to power *pools* than power sets.

Result? Players went one of two ways: Gimped characters (I believe the typical example was someone who made an invulnerable flier. Yes, they could fly. And they were invulnerable. That was it. No attacks.) or tankmages that trivialized the game.

So we ended up with ATs.

Not to mention that, yes, it does help with balance.

What you have run into is the not-rare-enough Idiotus Loudmouthus. This creature can be found pretty much anywhere, unfortunately. The younger sort tends to do things such as you saw. The older variety tends to go into politics.

Ignore them, keep walking, and enjoy the game.

While I haven't seen most of this (and, really, don't crash) - this, I have noticed.

Which is rather a pain when you're watching for, say, Rage to crash.

    /this. Many times over.

Other than the aforementioned "help group stuff against a wall," you can also:

    - Go onto maps with drops. (Such as the ruined city, most familiar from Dreck.) Get between the drop and the mobs. Knock mobs away from the drop (and together, typically.)

    - Teaming with an Ice tank, or something with slows? Sure, they'll follow... and in a nice, slow, spread out line. Get behind them, use AOE KB - they're pushed ahead and clumped.

    - In non-cave maps, spawns don't tend to stay "clumped." You take one side, the tank takes the other (or the ice patch is laid down, etc.) Knock them together. Enjoy.

See kheld forum. Unfortunately it no longer turns you into a ball of light. It is, however, usable in forms.

    Defunct Origins?

Blood of the Black Stream was a mentioned Epic AT, not an origin.

There were the ones we have now, as well as things like gadgeteer, etc.

Down in my guides, I've got two things that may interest you - follow the link. One on the "original COH trailer" (the video, unfortunately, seems to have vanished, but there are links to dev diaries and, I believe, a Wayback internet archive of the COH site with the old origins) as well as "EAT at War Witch's" which will go into current, killed, and mentioned-but-not-implemented Epic ATs.

Creating a reward with one path to acquisition that's tied to the notion of walking that path is going to irritate anyone who doesn't like the path. It's not a design paradigm I'd recommend to anyone.
That's not the only reason, though. There's:
    - Preparation for future content. If they finally DO come out with something other than GrindTrials for Incarnates to do, I don't want to be stuck back at square 1 before being able to do... well, much of anything.

    - FInishing a character. These were presented (among other things) as a way of getting "more levels without increasing the level cap." I don't know of too many people that are "finished" at 20, 30, or 40.

    - Finishing/fleshing out a concept. Lore comes to mind here, with two different pets really accentuating the difference between two different characters for me. Two Peacebringers. One would have Polar Lights fit perfectly, the other, the Storm Elementals. Even if I just sit at Tier1, that's a fair bit of work and time to unlock... and if I try to do it by shards? Yeah. Right.

And there's those who just want to push their character to the peak of what they can be.

    Changing origins

Origin used to (as in "pre-beta") do a lot more in this game - and there were more of them. It determined how many powers you could get and just how far you could enhance them (IE, you could have a few really strong powers, or many, but somewhat weaker, ones.)

I suspect it's one of those things that's baked down into the character so deeply that letting people change it would break far more than we suspect.

(As far as "what fits," don't assume you're going from a human standpoint - I have several non-human "natural" characters.)

I know. That was a statement of bitterness more than anything.

I mean, I look back at that pile of AE tutorials I wrote up for AE's launch and feel like I wasted my time after seeing farms in the HOF. And for people with actual arcs they put a lot of work into getting... what, zero plays, or seeing feedback like that?

    ... yeah.
  18. Memphis_Bill

    Can I cry now?

Personally, I'd PM each and every screenshot of those to, oh, Positron and Aeon. Then again, I don't get plays - mine are buried under so many farms (live and dead) and so old they'll never see the light of day again. Seriously, farms should never be in the HoF. I'm just waiting for one to become DC.

Admittedly my cynical and annoyed self doesn't expect them to get the point, since, well, AE isn't the new shiny any more, but still.
  19. I've got to say, I never really got into GW. I've tried the various classes, I have someone in the... um... wherever that is, the dwarf-snowy-area, but wasn't interested enough to go past it. I think I start playing with it about once a year, play for 30 minutes, and put it away again.

So... yeah. Don't see myself picking up GW2. Unless they've gotten rid of the "Single player game with MMO trading in town" feel.

Actually, that hasn't been true for a while now.

AND slot bonuses stay in effect regardless of form, as well.
  21. Random thought as I was buzzing around killing Family for my level 20 costume slot...

COV brought in unlockable contacts. We haven't ... really seen a lot done with them since, and I think it's a shame (but, hey, add it to the list of stuff that's introduced and forgotten.)

That said, some of them are awkward. Velveeta - or whatever her name is - is way out of the way in Oakes, and requires you (should you not want to outlevel her arc) to trap ghosts... which can rapidly surround the player with Bosses and Elite Bosses if the trap 'pops.' I can't think of the last time I've run her - or even remembered about her without being out of range.

Doc Buzzsaw is a fun arc, but I always seem to get her *just* in time to unlock her... at 29. Unless I think about it early and disable XP or something.

And - the one that brought this to mind - the slot machine. I can't think of the last time I ran that - I think I've run that arc once. Maybe twice. Given I have around 300 existing characters, I should have seen it more often. (But, really, I don't end up with enough Family bosses, or Family missions in general, to unlock it.)

Then there's ... what... mu'whatsisface. Who you unlock by doing a villainside respec. Which, when it first came out - well, I still dont' find them fun, but at least I *did* them back in issue 6-7. Now? With the number of vetspecs, freespecs, second and third builds and the like, I don't know that I *have* him unlocked anywhere. If he were unlocked by server transfers, I'd have him unlocked on more.

Why am I griping about this? Because I actually *like* the concept. Especially in the otherwise ride-the-rails path of redside. They have the potential to give some variety. Blueside, I have multiple zones with a slew of contacts and arcs to go through. Redside, it's the same-old same-old - unless you know about these unlocks and *remember* them (and what to do to unlock them.) You're not forced into them (like Seer Marino.)

But the system needs to be introduced, and it isn't. I hate seeing this stuff go to waste. And I hate forgetting it - and seeing that nothing new has been added this way. Could we get *someone* tipping off players that "Hey, someone might want to talk to you - if you take care of business with X group first."

In any case, all that leads up to some idle curiosity-

Does anyone actually remember, or go out of their way to unlock, any of the unlockable contacts? And would you want more, if they were introduced better?

    Pretendy time!

You... are General George Patton. You have just raced with the Third Army - tanks, infantry and the like - into battle. They're engaging the enemy.

You... step up and throw a rock at the Germans. Not a big rock. Perhaps a nice stone that, if there were a pond nearby, would skip 2-3 times. You hit a tank.

You have scuffed the paint. Someone will need to buff that out before the next review. You have, technically, done damage. You have just done mastermind levels of damage.

I'm not asking for one-shotting with my snap shot. Really. I just want enough damage that, if something's running off with 15 hit points left, I have a reasonable chance of turning and firing at it and actually killing it.
  23. Well, they had to put the lag from the BAF and ITF Lag Valley *somewhere.*

Smartalec remark aside - have you looked somewhere besides Freedom and Virtue? As in - looking at "large matches" and/or groups in RV, or just "Enter RZ, lag out?"

(Nitpick - should be in tech issues.)
  24. Give ya one that... apparently except for a shadow... isn't quite so jaggy, but a little farther off.

The only other powerset type where this is even an issue is Blast sets for Blasters, Defenders and Corruptors. Trying to use Aim + Build Up + Snipe is probably the WORST use of Build Up time available, but at least for these ATs, that's actually a provably bad move. For Stalkers, that's what they're supposed to be doing...

I'm starting to wonder if it might not be a better idea to assassinate bare and THEN use Build Up even on targets I can't one-shot.
Just kind of poking through (admittedly not really *reading,* skimming while on lunch break) and reading this -

Assassin Strike - if used alone, no build up. If used with build up, adds a build up to the end to make up for the time? Or, while we're doign the AOE fear, a bit more of a debuff of def or res?

    *shrug* Random thought.
