It's all a complex tapestry." 5 pts if you recognize the Simpson's episode) and of course Incarnation (which already has plenty of discussion threads devoted to it).
As I've said in at least one of those threads, my desire to see the Devs expand and/or clarify the lore is tempered by some of the incredibly stupid (IMO) things that they have come up with lately. I'd almost rather have no background than one I have to just shake my head at and ignore.
  2. I seem to recall Positron making some rather strong anti-farming statements, but these were promptly met by "I pay my subscription, you aren't the boss of me; besides, if it's possible to do it, that must make it okay" bluster from some farmers and simply ignored by the rest.

I agree with Xanatos (shock!) that it would be nice to get AE out of the starting zones, just so that newbies don't get the idea that AE Farming Is The Game.

For now, at least, the "paying for AE farm" thing is mostly confined to Freedom (the server), though I wonder if Freedom (the pricing plan) will bring it to others. Sometimes I wonder if anyone on Freedom (again, the server) knows how to level any other way.
  3. psst.
    you're still having the argument.
the one you said you were done with.
  4. I was (and am) bored at work, and this showed up in new posts. *shrug*

Not involved in the knockback debate (I have an FF/Energy defender, but the issue doesn't come up with the people I play with). Just responding to the apparent dissonance, if not dishonesty, inherent (IMO) in this thread.\

And in the specific case, yeah, it bugs me a little because I thought you were one of the sensible ones. But it seems no one (certainly not me) is immune to the occasional bout of attention-seeking self-pity. *places back of hand to forehead, sighs grandly* Woe. Woe, I say.

Trying to get you to knock it off because (still IMO) frankly, this sort of thing is beneath you, and since you ARE concerned about your forum rep and defending it, I thought you might like to know, this is not helping.

And I submit that (IMO), in neither case is it appropriate to start a new thread just to throw up one's hands and sigh loudly, "FINE, have it YOUR way. I've TRIED to be fair and tolerant and work out a compromise, but you lot aren't having any of it." Hitching up your skirts and flouncing off the stage is optional.

The way to actually give up on the argument is to stop posting and let the other side have the last word (which, ironically, may end up never having any effect on the game - such is the pettiness and futility of forum debate, especially here). Don't grandstand, don't call attention to yourself or the fact that you're leaving now (right now, any minute, after this next post I swear), and don't try to get in one last shot against the meanyheads. Just go.

Finally, free tip from someone who's been there: no one cares about generic-your forum rep half as much as you do. And to the extent anyone does care, still-generic-you aren't doing yourself any favors by trying to defend it. People will make their own judgments.
  6. Last I heard, "Arbiter" has been locked out anyway (as in, the game will not currently accept a name with that in it).
  7. Then simply quit the field and don't respond next time. Disengage. Don't make a melodramatic concession that paints you as the poor victim. If you're truly granting them the victory, let them have it instead of throwing a pity party.
  8. Sorry, Bill - in most of your other posts, you're consistently level-headed, but I have to call it as I see it. And what I see in this thread is someone claiming he's been harassed by his opponents on this issue until he has no choice but to "surrender" in the most passive-aggressive manner available. You've tried to be reasonable, but those intractable no-tolerance complainers just won't leave you alone!
  9. Meh. IMO, this isn't really a suggestion or a solution, nor a (genuine) surrender. The OP is just trying to shame his opponents by casting them as unreasonable and unwilling to compromise.
  10. The irony being that most of those bases that would be broken are taking advantage of the relaxing of restrictions which happened when the Devs said, "We're not going to get around to properly fixing bases any time soon; so here, go nuts with stacking and positioning."

And people did, and now the tide-you-over palliative is one more thing in the way, another strike against properly fixing bases.

I wonder how many of those people with fancy yet illegal bases would be willing to have them wiped and start over in return for an actual solution, or if the time for that has (long) passed.
  11. Where are these prices posted?

(If the answer is "in the Beta forums, which are not currently accessible to the public", then why is THIS here?)

    Hazard Pool

A friend of mine has Rise of the Phoenix as part of her attack chain.
    I'm only half joking.
  13. EDIT: Never mind, redacted. Not my place to say.

    Same.

You say it'll be coming to the store? I'll wait.
  15. I did it a couple of times - like, once per Incarnate - when the trials were new(er), and always in a "returning from hospital, 8 and 10, three minutes on the clock" context. That's after spending the rest of the round, every round, punching or healing my heart out.

These days, having gotten what I need for my characters from this round of trials, I don't run them at all. Maybe that's for the best.

    Who Will Die?

the Brawler does seem most likely to me as well. Pity.

I wonder who'll be the Phalanx's next token [ethnic].

This really isn't a question that has a good answer, so the mere act of posing it seems like it should have been an easy mistake to avoid. When you want the audience to ignore the man behind the curtain, you don't draw attention to the man behind the curtain and explain all the ways in which he is the Wizard of Oz.
It may not have a good (universal) answer, but at least for my characters, I can tell you quite definitely which ones have godlike power (or the potential and/or desire to gain same) and those who are "merely" super-beings. The first set are doing the Incarnate stuff; the rest are not.

To me, there's a clear difference between someone who got her Science Powers in a lab accident, or an ex-Sky Raider, and a Superman-expy, an alternate version of the (Psychic) Clockwork King, or the embodiment of an entire city district (a small god, to be sure, but a god just the same).
  18. But for characters already made, possibly years ago, when such options weren't available, having to jump through hoops just for the sake of jumping kind of sucks. It's not gameplay, it's a chore.
    Just sayin'.

I know at least one person in this thread who feels that the lack of (free) side changing as of CoV's launch was a flaw in the game's design, which is now, finally, being corrected. We should pay when the devs fix bugs?

Sure, here and there, for spot defense (or whatever) or when all the sets of that type just suck, but not entire builds. Not like before IOs came along. So like I said, the time's probably passed... even if AE wasn't a broken sideshow used mostly for farming. *sigh*
  20. Most of my characters, especially the first few to run through a certain set of content (CoH, CoV, Praetoria), are pretty integrated into the setting. They did those things that the missions say, if perhaps not quite how the mission text has them react; those events and experiences are blocks of foundation around which I weave their personal stories, through their reactions. If there are things that character would not do or contacts they would not work with, I don't.

Later characters tend to eschew running official content (yet again) in favor of more generic and/or player-created content - other people's missions (that I can include or ignore in "my story" as I wish), radio and tip missions (ditto; plus, as they're more generic, I can weave my own narrative around them), and the occasional AE arc when someone in my circle is motivated to write one. Official arcs that are fun and/or fundamental enough to that character may get played. And of course, there's no-combat sitting-around-the-base RP to fill in the gaps.

I believe I play this way, in these two different styles, to minimize not only boredom with running the same arc(s) on yet another alt, but also implausibility. Many arcs are fixed in or assume a certain frame of time - quite a lot of them, in fact, only make sense if this was still '04 or '05, shortly after the game's launch, when things like the true nature of the Rikti, or Crey, or Nemesis, or the Malta Group, or Oroborous were not open secrets to most of the super-powered population. It's a bit silly to have Agent McQueen congratulate you on preventing a second Rikti invasion while dropships cruise through the skies of Founders Falls. A character I create today is not going to be the one to reveal the Clockwork aren't really robots, or uncover the connection between the Sky Raiders and Nemesis, or deliver the cannisters that start the Outbreak. Someone else did those things, years ago.

Then there's the stuff I ignore outright, like the official background of AE (you expect me to stick my head in this thing? how stupid do you think I am? no, really) or the Origin of Power arc (just bad writing) or the VEAT arc (ditto). And while some of my Incarnates are following the canon path, others are coming into the power or potential they've always had through other means and/or as it becomes possible to represent that in-game.
  21. "Maintaining the status quo" is also "a free service for the Paragon Studios marketing team." (yaaay, I'm a data point!)
  22. Nearly all of them with condescending smileys.
  23. One that I came up with a while back, before I got discouraged by the (continued) sorry state of the Architect and lack of Dev attention or fixes, and one that I recently thought of but whose time is probably long past (who still slots Hami-Os, anyway?):

    Pawns of the Gamester

You've been abducted by the Gamester and forced to be a "contestant" in his latest game. Will you be "eliminated", or advance to the Bonus Round?

    Terrorist Cell

For years, heroes have been deliberately exposing themselves or even implanting bits of the Hamidon in themselves to increase their powers. What could possibly go wrong?
