That's what I took from this. I think it's important to keep in mind that this is a show about pathetic people who know, deep down inside, that getting (any) place in the regional high school sing-off will probably be the most important thing they do in their entire lives. They're pettty, petty people.

"Sad little king of a sad little hill..." ~River Tam

To that end, I agree that Breadsticks was a big deal because, from what I gather, it's the only restaurant in this alternate universe Lima, Ohio that even makes a vague and lazy gesture towards class. I imagine that the brochures sent out for its opening event advertised proudly that it has "Matching, real china dishes", which many of the citizens mistook for meaning "From China".

    That's just me, though.

I feel the need to defend Kurt's predatory attitude a little, as I know where the character is coming from in this. It isn't right, but he's in a very difficult position to be in. As a gay teen in an environment where, as far as you know, you are the only one around, a little hope that someone else you're interested in could be like you encourages you to go for it. He's lonely and feels alone, but if he doesn't act upon it and try, he'll never know if he'll find someone too. Even today, depending on where you live, being an out gay teen is really tough and not everyone has somewhere to turn to. Unlike for straight people, its difficult to locate other people you can safely have interest in unless you're in a known area populated by other gay people. It can also be a dangerous environment to express your feelings. When everyone else around you is dating or can easily express affections, it makes you feel like even more of an outcast.

Yes, Kurt comes on strong. But its also socially awkward to go "Hey, are you gay?" to anyone you might be interested in, not to mention possibly dangerous. I may not agree with his methods (its certainly nothing I ever tried), but I can see where he's coming from. Aside from how very stereotypical Kurt can be, the writers are doing a good job to help me empathize with him. When I was a teenager, I was lucky to get through high school without any major troubles when I came out. But not everyone is.
I agree. Kurt's in an odd place, and his behavior is understandable. It may not be perfect role-model correct, but it's understandable. In my opinion, the greatest favor they've done to the queer community with this character is make him nuanced, consistent, and such that you can either agree or disagree with his actions but see the arguments for both.

In the first season, they darn near martyr'd Kurt half the time. Calling him out for his "I know best" attitude while keeping him sympathetic makes the character far more admirable to me.

Anyway, awesome episode. One of my favorites. If there are The 3 Glees, Ian Brennan's are rapidly becoming my favorite so much that they are actively anticipated over the others.
  2. As has been stated here, there's a good chance this will expose Rocky to the "new" generation. Even if it's not as as good, it's a gateway drug. Also, if you're a fan of Ryan Murphy's episodes of Glee (Such as Brittany/Britney), you are probably the exact kind of person that must be shown Rocky.

I'm disappointed in the changes, but it's not an absolute wash.
  3. Great episode. One of my favorites by far, and it did really flesh out Brittany. I like her relationship with Santana. It's very unique yet makes a lot of sense for the characters.

Echoo, your avatar doubles as both the cutest and saddest moment in the show.
  4. All fair points, save for your Incredibles and Toy Story rebuttals. Your only rebuttals there were to point out that characters existed in that movie that didn't fit my statement. Those cited characters weren't the main characters. Both The Incredibles and Toy Story were told from the perspectives of Mr. Incredible and Woody (respectively), to whom my statement applies. There's a lot else going on, but it doesn't negate what I said.

True on Wall-E as well. He is, however, a literal aged relic blasted into the world of the modern day. Aside from the word "sadness", the rest applies.

Again, I love Pixar and agree on most of your points. That picture that's been meme'ing its way around the internet, however, contributes to this misconception that Pixar's films are wholly original and never repeat themselves. That is not, I submit, true.

It's also not true that this is a deleted scene from Up.

(Oh, and you accused me of retroactively fitting the Up template on everyone else. Full disclosure: This entered my head via a review I read of Wall-E. As such, Up came after I began thinking this.)

    • Wall-E
    • Toy Story
    • Up
    • Finding Nemo
    • The Incredibles
    • Ratatouille (my weakest example, so I put it last. No regrets on the others)

Edit: That's all Pixar's done in any of its great films: Taken a character from a past time and thrown them into a future that forgot all about them. Again and again. The one that subverted the formula was Cars, when someone from a present-gone-wrong had to meet with a superior past. It also got a poor score by Pixar standards.

I love Pixar and think that everything they make is better than Dreamworks, but I hate it when one-joke internet posts begin shaping peoples' thinking.

$20 for one month of full, unlimited access to their tools. An amazing price for marketing research. I, however, am not a marketing firm.

    Just firm.

Seriously, go ahead and feel these pecs. They're quite the situation.

    1) Megamind's already made that face a couple'a times.

    2) Pixar's also the same story over and over again, but it's such a good story that no one's noticed. <3
  8. Previews of the song covers. Warning: Very low quality.

I begrudgingly accept the lyric changes. It sucks, but... oh well.

Edit: Apparently Fox blocked Glee from going full force with Dr. Frank 'n' Furter. Hence Mercedes and toned down lyrics.

I also get anxious when I get those brief glimpses at how wide spread and coordinated commercial products are. Usually invokes paranoia and this brief reminder that all anyone wants is money, ya know?

Good thing this Coca-Cola is calming me down.

Funny story: While I was in the shower this morning, I was thinking about this conversation and this exact point hit me.

    Not my best point.

On a more serious note I hardly see how this will actually amount to anything. Since we have yet to generate a self thinking AI (so I believe), robots are just purely computer code. Couldn't a pain threshold be coded into the software of the robot without beating people up!
Yeah, I'm really not sure how it factors into the test. I think it's something like Robot punches, they rate that punch a 4. They rate the next one a 7. The rating system goes all the way up to 11. Once the robot "understands" the difference, people are free to tell it what an acceptable amount of pain it can inflict on its coworkers for a task.

That would actually make it easy for a robot to assist in surgeries and understand when it hurt someone past what is necessary for the operation.
  13. They promise to stop punching you if you ask nicely. Really.

Short version: Part of an ongoing research project to figure out how to explain "pain" to robots involves encouraging robots to inflict pain. The above image is of a robot programmed to punch people harder and harder until the test makers (test subjects?) say the word "Mercy". Then it will stop.

I don't have anything to add but to acknowledge that this exists.
  14. Google has this program that basically tracks such information online. If you want, I can compile peoples' answers into a master list. We can even have it stickied.

    Thoughts?

It's worth the $10, but it's nothing phenomenal.

    Non-issue.
Obviously they would need to address it. The way they are addressing it seems inadequate.
  19. Little Red Riding Hood is hands down my favorite story ever. The juxtaposition of something so innocent and kind encountering such malicious evil has so many different themes and interpretations, it continues to be relevant no matter who tells it and how.

May be the only Sci-Fi movie I watch.

Edit: Okay, so that looked awful. Anyway, will try to expose myself to something different.

For a show that has a very strictly observed continuity for over 40 years, this is more than a little disappointing.

Still, I just got into Doctor Who two months ago, so there's not much indignation to which I'm entitled.

Just look at the two of the major supervillains in the game who have enough power to set up their own state - Recluse and Tyrant both have different styles to their dictatorships, but the end results are the same - they've both created a society that fits their image of what society should be like and how it should operate - their societies justify their actions.
Recluse likes the idea of "survival of the fittest", so the society he created mirrors that - just like Tyrant is afraid of free will, so the society he built has no free will.

So if you're a superpowered person who thinks mutliating prisoners is a good idea, then a society that thinks the same way would be much better for you than one that found the idea disgusting.

Once villains get to a certain level of power, they stop fighting against society, and start remaking it in their own image.
Not all of them. You have a point, but you mistook a generalization for a fact.

Take, for example, the unnamed villain of the movie Serenity. He explicitly and literally states that he is aware that he is a monster. He states that there is "no room for him" in the world he is helping to create. In other words, he fully expects to be rejected by society. (Did anyone else interpret that speech to be his stating that he plans to be killed at the end of his mission?)

Additionally, Batman hates hates hates the idea of anyone accepting him. As outlined in "The Dark Knight", it leads to dangerous ideas like other people being held accountable for his actions or imitators putting themselves in harm's way.

Not every Super has dreams of changing society and how it works. If the world's a computer, some want to upgrade to 7, some want to go to Mac, and some want to simply do a Spyware check and keep it as is.

With the 100 people I got to answer, some backed up your thesis. Others backed up my examples. I think that samples of each existed in my survey, and saying "All would do X" is a discredit.

Rent being my favorite musical, this has struck me, too. Thing is, the songs that are the greatest in Rent are the ones that are the most offensive (La Vie Boheme, namely). They may need to be careful. Then again, "Take Me or Leave Me" would work with a couple of the couples.

As for "Seasons of Love", well that is to Broadway as Bohemian Rhapsody is to rock. As such, I imagine that they're saving it for a special occasion.
