Glee Season 2 Ep 4 "Duets"

(Spoilers below.)

Doesn't seem to be a thread for the latest episode yet, which is a pity as I found it pretty darn good.

The episode more than made up for the previous two weeks and did a lot to reassure me that the writers of Glee still know where its appeal lies. A lot happened in this ep that I've felt needed to happen for a long time:

  • Much more focus on people not called Rachel.
  • A lot of character development - hell, this ep did more for Brittany's character than "Britney/Brittany".
  • Someone finally called Kurt out on his predatory attitude!
  • Some brilliantly funny lines from almost everybody.

Also, yay for Burt isn't brain damaged!

Thoughts?

I agree on all points.

Ill probably be adding Kurt and Rachel's duet to my music collection.
And I found Mike and Tina's duet immensely charming.

I liked it, but I felt a lot of the growth/epiphanies were unearned in the longview:

Rachel suddenly realizing she is a bad person and throwing the competition.
Artie losing his virginity and then immediately regretting it.

Then again, Mike Chang not only had a lot of great lines, but he also sung!

Great episode. One of my favorites by far, and it did really flesh out Brittany. I like her relationship with Santana. It's very unique yet makes a lot of sense for the characters.

Echoo, your avatar doubles as both the cutest and saddest moment in the show.

As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to screengrab it!

Santana's obsession with the place was just hilarious.

The Santana/Mercedes duet was probably my favourite all the great numbers in this episode.

Just watched this today. I really felt sad for Brittany.

Sam and Quinn make a cute couple. I think Sam is a closet geek/nerd.

I wish I could remember a time when a gift certificate for two at a chain restaurant would make me that excited in high school. Yea it's a step up from fast food but really now.

*eyes narrow*

As someone who dearly enjoys going to Olive Garden with his wife (which is my closest guess as to what Breadsticks is modeled after), I resent these statements!

I did like how they got excited about it, and considering I knew it was a chain restaurant, it is pretty funny. Even if I still love Olive Garden!

My wife and I watched this one out of sync when we tried to watch Brittany, Brittney (or however they're spelled). Stupid Fox's website pulled up the wrong one. Anyway, we were both not very happy with the first episode of the season, as it just felt off. This one felt much better to us... the duets reminded me of some of the stronger musical numbers from Season 1, and I enjoyed a lot of them.

Still had some questionable emotional notes (like Arty being upset about losing his virginity, but not seeming to protest much when it happened. Yes, I know he's a teenage guy, but there was a bit too much of a switcharound: would have made more sense if Brittney had needed to persuade a little more), but it was still pretty good. I'm distracted by Sam's mammoth lips, but I can certainly understand why Quinn likes him. And yes, Brittney's pushing of the meatball was endearing, hilarious, and sad.

Brittany/Brittney wasn't as good (partially because I hate Brittany Spears), but I felt the "theme" of that episode worked better than the Madonna episode of season 1.5. Sure, John Stamos has some weird anaesthetic in his office, but that worked in with the humor of the bit.

Still think it's criminal that there has been no seen interaction between Finn and Quinn after their breakup. Quinn testing Finn for Rachel (and maybe herself some) isn't enough. I know they have a lot of characters and storylines to juggle, but it still bugs me.

*added*

I also liked Kurt getting called out on some of his behavior. Rachel has been plenty, so Kurt needs it as well. This episode made up for that screwed up confrontation in 1.5 as well.

I like Olive Garden too, as an adult. I can't remember ever seeing high school students on a date there. Denny's sure.

Actually for me my perception is probably a generational thing. When I was in high school (late 70s) there simply weren't many national chain restaurants where I grew up. We had a regional New England chain, Friendly's, which was known for their ice cream so it was a good place to take a date post movie and I think there was a Pizza Hut two towns over. Everything else were locally owned sit-down restaurants, mostly Italian with a couple Asian and I think one steak house. This was suburbia BTW, not the middle of nowhere where I currently live.

Yeah, but when you were in high school would you have gone as insane as Santanna did over a gift certificate for a chain restaurant? I wouldn't have.

Well, keep in mind that I was joking about all that earlier. Still, Olive Garden seemed pretty great to me when I was in high school... I pretty much only got to go there on my birthdays (this was in the 90s for me). I certainly never could take dates there, as it was even more difficult to pay for than Perkins or Wendy's.

For Santana, I don't know. She certainly prioritizes things somewhat oddly, or differently, than some. For her, going to a more upscale restaurant than fast food might represent something bigger and better for her. I'm assuming they're going to make her character a little deeper at some point, and I could see parallels between her obsession with Breadsticks and her usual fast food relationship to sex. She's wanting something more somewhere.

Is the connection a little goofy? Perhaps, but it's in step with the goofy show it's on, and really... humans can be silly like that. We're lovable and stupid at the same time.

Remember, everyone associated with Glee Club is a loser in their own way. Santana, or anyone in that group, being excited for Breadsticks seems like typical M.O. for the show to illustrate that point.

She did mention in the Brit/Brit episode that her father is a Doctor so she seems quite well off (she also got breast enhancements over the summer). It may have more to do with the strict diet she follows to maintain her weight. Bread is supposedly very fattening so maybe her attraction to it is that it's forbidden fruit.

I feel the need to defend Kurt's predatory attitude a little, as I know where the character is coming from in this. It isn't right, but he's in a very difficult position to be in. As a gay teen in an environment where, as far as you know, you are the only one around, a little hope that someone else you're interested in could be like you encourages you to go for it. He's lonely and feels alone, but if he doesn't act upon it and try, he'll never know if he'll find someone too. Even today, depending on where you live, being an out gay teen is really tough and not everyone has somewhere to turn to. Unlike for straight people, its difficult to locate other people you can safely have interest in unless you're in a known area populated by other gay people. It can also be a dangerous environment to express your feelings. When everyone else around you is dating or can easily express affections, it makes you feel like even more of an outcast.

Yes, Kurt comes on strong. But its also socially awkward to go "Hey, are you gay?" to anyone you might be interested in, not to mention possibly dangerous. I may not agree with his methods (its certainly nothing I ever tried), but I can see where he's coming from. Aside from how very stereotypical Kurt can be, the writers are doing a good job to help me empathize with him. When I was a teenager, I was lucky to get through high school without any major troubles when I came out. But not everyone is.

That's what I took from this. I think it's important to keep in mind that this is a show about pathetic people who know, deep down inside, that getting (any) place in the regional high school sing-off will probably be the most important thing they do in their entire lives. They're pettty, petty people.

"Sad little king of a sad little hill..." ~River Tam

To that end, I agree that Breadsticks was a big deal because, from what I gather, it's the only restaurant in this alternate universe Lima, Ohio that even makes a vague and lazy gesture towards class. I imagine that the brochures sent out for its opening event advertised proudly that it has "Matching, real china dishes", which many of the citizens mistook for meaning "From China".

That's just me, though.

I agree. Kurt's in an odd place, and his behavior is understandable. It may not be perfect role-model correct, but it's understandable. In my opinion, the greatest favor they've done to the queer community with this character is make him nuanced, consistent, and such that you can either agree or disagree with his actions but see the arguments for both.

In the first season, they darn near martyr'd Kurt half the time. Calling him out for his "I know best" attitude while keeping him sympathetic makes the character far more admirable to me.

Anyway, awesome episode. One of my favorites. If there are The 3 Glees, Ian Brennan's are rapidly becoming my favorite so much that they are actively anticipated over the others.

I agree about Artie having a problem with Brittany and his first time after the fact. Its like eating a meal at a restaurant and then complaining about the cooking to the kitchen after you finished all the food.

Bread in itself isn't the problem, in fact you should eat bread everyday, just as long as it's not made from a single flour, but from a mix of flours, preferably from different cereals. Also if they're from whole cereals it's even better.

The problem, like I said, isn't the bread... It's what you put in/on it.

Or how much you eat. Even multi-grain bread is bad for you if you eat a whole wheelbarrow of it.

I'm surprised several people didn't like Artie changing his mind. I found his reaction quite understandable, as was his enthusiasm beforehand.

Understandable as in I understand why a character would do that, but if you're the type of person to lose your virginity to someone on what barely resembles a first date, you're not really the type of person to champion some grand respect for the sanctity of sexuality. Both behavioral codes are fine with me, but for heaven's sake, pick one.

I liked it. At the time, he thought that Brittany was really into him and that the experience was special to them both. He didn't know that she was just trying to use him, and when he found out he was crushed.

Yeah, it was totally true love! She thought that he was cute and asked him to work on a project in their after-school club. It's totally a deep enough relationship for him to take a step that he had been holding sacred for years... >.>

Dude's a jerk.

Also, Artie commented that Brittany never even made eye contact with him before. Now, when they are assigned a project where the students need to partner up, Brittany shows interest in him? Coincidence?

After giving it a little thought I don't have a problem with Artie changing his mind. People have all done things they regret the next day. But the way he treated Brittany like it was all her fault and he was completely innocent was wrong.

My complaint as well.

I think the show did a good job of highlighting that Brittany operates on such a completely different level than other people that she's all alone in her eccentricity. It was a bitter sweet moment to see that she makes no efforts to be anything but herself, but that is someone people don't really like.

It's not the first time he's been a jerk. Remember when Tina confided to him that she faked her stutter? She's opening up to him by revealing a secret and he dumps on her like she did it all just to trick him. Maybe they are purposely writing him to have a big martyr complex.
