Umm, you forgot The Rock. I'm extrapolating, of course, from your list of movies that if it takes place in a prison it's automatically great.

Let these examples be a lesson to anyone who would want to save the world. First off, never join the military (Admiral Ackbar said it best: "It's a trap!")! Second, before you save it, have the entire planet's population all sign a legally binding agreement that will protect you from all liability. Refuse to do a thing until they all sign it!
I don't know that you're making a case against the military so much as you're making a case FOR your sick thing.

To quote Serenity, "the situation is even less simple than you think." It's close-minded to attribute Firefly's cancellation to one thing. To say Firefly failed because it was not good shows a lack of nuanced thinking and explains why you were unable to enjoy it to begin with but that's a whole 'nother thread entirely. You need to take into account Firefly had to contend with all the other networks covering 9/11 as well as the advent of the reality TV age. A sci-fi program with an (at the time) obscure pedigree pitted up against news networks and shows like Fear Factor? It really never stood a chance.

I think you're way off the mark with that statement. Truth is we were already sold on those characters. We would have gone to see it and the movie would have done well even if Mr. Whedon wasn't at the helm. Joss just made sure we didn't pay for something that sucked.

As for his own work, I think he takes a little more care (but not by a huge margin) to produce quality stories from the ground up. His characters have a little more depth and are more relatable. His stories tend to be more clever and the plot twists send me reeling for days. Maybe his own creations don't sell as well but they also don't have the advantage of being embedded in our culture for decades the way Marvel's comic book characters have.
  7. I'd like to see another hulk film. Hopefully, there's enough financial momentum to get one airborne. I think Ruffalo could hit it out of the park with a smart script.

Actually you're way off. She said in Russian "bozhe moi" which translates directly to "my god".

As for the poster who didn't know the q word it's from olde English which might be why you aren't aware of it.
  9. Thank you, Mr. Whedon. Also, great to see Enver Gjokaj aka Victor from Dollhouse in his cameo.
  10. Well I think this is a great opportunity to start putting in our suggestions for casting.

    I'll go first

For Bruce I'd go with Tamoh Penikett

For Gordon I'd go with Christopher Plummer

  11. I am really liking what I see from Transformers Prime. Well done show. It's ostensibly a kids' show what with all the kid sidekicks but it can get really dark and visceral. The action scenes are beautiful and even though it draws some of its designs and concepts from the Michael Bay films it's unmistakably its own entity.
  12. I'm partial to bacon wrapped hot dogs topped with grilled sauerkraut, onions, and green peppers. Top it off with some cream cheese and that's good eatin'. I've had a fifty dollar hot dog with Kobe beef. Just seemed like a perfectly good waste of Kobe to me. Thankfully, I didn't pay for it. I'm wondering if Cher really had the 69 dollar dog would she really wish she could turn back time?
  13. Yay or nay?

I like horror, I like Joss, and I liked Cloverfield. I'm going to see it. I just wanted to know if you're going.
  14. Haven't seen nor read Battle Royale but I just finished reading and watching The Hunger Games this week. I rather enjoyed both the novel and the movie. Although, I think I would have enjoyed the movie less had I not read the book. The movie felt more like a companion piece to me and helped me where my imagination was fuzzy. And when the movie skipped a part in the book my memory helped fill in the blanks.

The look of the film, especially the capitol, was very well conceived. The costumes evoked a little Willie Wonka and Bio Shock. Loved Stanley Tucci's portrayal of Caesar. Elizabeth Banks as Effie stole the scenes with her one liners. All in all a conversion from page to screen well done.
  15. That really is quite impressive! It's a toy built from a toy that can change into another toy!
  16. I just finished seeing most of it. I had to walk out. For me this movie had no pathos. I spent about two hours trying to figure out why anyone was important and then concluded that I don't care. From the looks of it most everyone who posted rave reviews here is familiar with the source material. Going into it I had a vague idea of what it was about and knew of its storied history. The writing was touch and go, only skimming the surface of the characters and didn't do a very good job of getting the uninitiated into context and up to date. To compare, an example of a movie that does this very well would be Serenity. I wasn't the only one to feel this way as I heard some very audible 'Wait, what?'s and some folks scratching their heads.

I was hoping for a pulpy period piece that meshed well with sci-fi. Again citing an example of this being done properly would be the Doctor Who episodes "Human Nature" followed by "Family of Blood". I really think the film missed an opportunity to immerse the audience by skimping on the idiosyncrasies and vernacular of the late 1800s/ early 1900s.

The design of the weapons and ships were very striking and nothing short of the innovation seen in Avatar but sadly this is pretty much all the good I can say about the movie.

I'm a fan of Taylor Kitsch in his role as Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights but really didn't see much range in the titular character. Lynn Collins' Dejah also wasn't very faceted. All in all, a let down and judging by the numbers, the chances for a sequel appear to be dwindling.

  19. Great death scene. Loved Dale in this episode. Most times I find him cloyingly dramatic and sometimes wished he'd shut up but this time around his presence was absolutely necessary. Decent episode but Carl is now neck and neck with Andrea for characters I hate because they don't know how to listen. Seriously, someone put a bell on that kid.
  20. We really need to start cloning Joss Whedon then put them on ice.

So yeah, it's safe to say I hate the guy, with a freaking passion just like I hate Catherine Tate for forcing me to listen to the catchphrase "Am I bovvered" being spewed out the mouths of pre-teen kinds for atleast two years at work, I hate them both so much that I'd be more than willing to laugh while they both got dragged to the cold dark damnation of hell.
Personally, I loved Ms. Tate's turn as Lauren Cooper. But yeah I can see your point. Thankfully, we don't have actual chavs stateside to ruin it for us.
  22. Poor Ryan Seacrest! Having to endure the snide comments from people with which he has cursory relationships with for THREE hours?!? I'd rather have my hands cut off in the Sudan than have to suffer a dirty suit! The horror!

Sorry if that sounded political. I'm not really trying to argue the plight of the Sudanese but am more incredulous at the hollow reactions of his co-hosts and those who would feel sorry for him. At the end of the day, he's still in show biz and runs a small media empire so sympathy from me is hard to come by. Not to say he doesn't work hard for it, but still it's a lot to come home to.

  24. What I'm excited about is the possible cross pollination to Doctor Who. I hope Star Trek fans who've never heard of Benedict Cumberbatch will check out his work in Sherlock, get hooked on some Moffat storytelling and find their way to some Matt Smith, then work their way back .
  25. I was amped up to see this. It did, however, fall short of my expectations. Cool how they got most of the voice actors back but it wasn't enough to make me feel like it was a worthy successor to the JLU series. Comparatively speaking, JLU's epic battles always got my heart pumping and the stories almost always engrossing. In this incarnation, I never once felt like the Justice League was on the ropes and Bane letting Batman live? Come on. Even without breaking the fourth wall everyone in the DCU knows not to underestimate Bats. The writers could have been a tad more creative in how to do away with Bruce as well as his escaping certain doom. Furthermore, I had to scoff when Superman said, "Maybe I can move the Earth out of the way."

It wasn't all bad and it certainly wasn't terrible (I give that dubious honor to Supes/Bats Absolute Power) but it lacked the sophistication and impact of JLU.
