Takashi Sugino, an official at Tokyo Sea Life Park, said the 60-centimetre (24-inch) bird appeared to have got itself over a rock wall twice its size and made a run for it.

Sugino said it was not entirely clear how the creature had managed to get out of the enclosure it shares with 134 other Humboldt penguins.

"Of course it can't fly, but sometimes wildlife have an 'explosive' power when frightened by something. Maybe it ran up the rock after being surprised," he said.
Two words: Penguin pyramid.

The funny part is that the zoo didn't know it was missing until -another- zoo emailed a pic of it swimming outside. Amongst the zoo social network it has to suck to be the guy working at the zoo that lost the penguin - he'll probably never live it down.

Clearly Kowalski gave Skipper an option that allowed him to jump the wall...

Well better to lose a Penguin then to have a dangerous cobra escaped like one zoo had happen last year. Luckily after a few days of bait setup in assorted locations, it was caught and returned to the reptile exhibit, no casualties.

Still for the Penguin, turn on the Bat-signal!

Snakes are tricky. Long, thin, and low to the ground as well.

Penguins, however, are not exactly known for their speed (on land), camoflauge, and general sneakiness.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

True, but still better to lose a penguin then a deadly snake. Hope the Penguin is safely returned.

Considering how this "resourceful" penguin managed to escape from a zoo it would seem the Penguins of Madagascar reference is a lot more appropriate to this story than the Batman one. Even the original article went that route.

Or the staff were just that oblivious and had a sign on the wall saying, "Please don't leave.". Of course, the sign would've been in Japanese rather than Pengi.

It happens. Like the time the red panda got loose in the Central Park Zoo in NY. It was found sitting outside its enclosure, staring through the glass, since it wanted to get back in.

The official explanation of how it got out? "We didn't know they could jump that high."
