even without the we are Gods....they can take out entire leadership structures with pretty much impunity

a lot is made of the legionaire but with the number 11,000 there, you're including a ton of conscripts as well

besides, the original article is asking "could I destroy" not "could I conquer" or "could I take over"

and so far everybody has said "if the goal is just to decimate the entire country it would be easy" in one way or another

The initial encounter(s) would go very poorly for the Romans.

we're not talking about "most Americans"...I've heard enough from family to know that map mistakes in the marines get you thoroughly chewed out

and mortars don't require any of that...nor do claymores...or sniper rifles...or humvees

the fact is you have to keep piling on limits for the Romans to even have a chance
  4. one marine's response to the month of operating fuel for the limits:

"so they can spend 29 days going home"

but yeah, we went over Germans vs Russians circa 1940s, N.Korea/China v Marines in Korean War (Chesty Puller), Zulu Wars, Iraq vs Iran, even Rome vs various nations

some of the above didn't have near the difference in technology we're discussing and yet the smaller force won consistently (might have some issue with the German v Russians, but the turn back happened as Russian tech got better)

also, factoring in the Roman artillery doesn't help....the best trebuchet and catapults have a fraction of the range of any mortars used by the marines and much less mobility and destructive ability as well...

the Romans would be looking for a big honking siege work several stories tall while three guys with a two to three foot tube are shelling them from a couple of miles off

Roman mobility was listed at 30 miles a day...Marine mobility is in the 100s

ancient armies did not operate at night nearly as well as modern ones, and mostly camped for the night

easily identified commanders, lack of mobility, lack of firepower, lack of range, fighting against a completely alien tactical doctrine that has studied your own tactical doctrine extensively

as long as we're talking a straight "can it be done" without any sort of limiting matters, then yes, no question...marines

    the mortars alone are enough

Does the portal make noise? where is it located? is it visible?

I would say that even if the portal doesn't make noise any machine coming through will make noise...

I would say if they could place the portal it would be slightly north of Medolanum on this map http://resourcesforhistoryteachers.w...ire_1_A.d..jpg

So... the portal opens the Marines start coming through... What happens?

Well the first this is likely some people would see what's going on and within a little bit of time a messenger would be sent to the closest Legion. That legion would like react and meet at Medolanum...

If i remember a legion can march like 30 miles in a day...

So at this point is a legion close enough to set up by the time the Marines are ready to do anything

How would the Romans and Marines act? Also would the Marines start off with the goal of taking over an holding or would they be peaceful at first and who would act first?
the marines should be ready to do something the moment they're through the portal

with the various transport options, Marines can cover hundreds of miles in a day

by the time the MESSENGER reached the first legion, the marines would already be moving and have established positions

by the time the legion was started out their based operations, the marine helicopters would have seen the formations forming up and radioed it ahead

before they even saw the marines, the Roman column would likely be facing a pre-placed claymore ambush followed by distance mortaring

the first legion would take around about 10 minutes of work without any legionairre even seeing a hint of the enemy and with the marines mostly seeing them through binoculars

Really, though, someone has already referenced the Zulu wars.

If the British did it in the late 1800s against the Zulus, where the tech and strategy difference was far less pronounced, then yeah, the MEU would be fine
  6. by coincidence, my gaming group was talking about how a set of WWII tanks would take out an M1 Abrams

the strat was dependent on the amount of ammunition the M1 could carry and amounted to: send tanks until it runs out of ammo...another tank blows out its engine, the last tank rams it repeatedly until it is out of operation

that was like 60 King Tigers vs 1 M1 Abrams

I doubt going back to things less mobile and efficient would help any
  7. AHHH!!! How is Johnny Cash not in my writing music lists!?!
  8. I sort of had Lucretia do this at the end of Bystander...there were a number of contributing factors however, most of her problem actually came from the associated terminal velocity fall...the actually nuke was outside atmosphere

I she can't survive the full force of a nuke at the current part of the story...heck, she can barely survive people with martial arts training
  9. Rifts/Palladium style vampires, by the mechanics, a nuke will throw them some dozens of feet but won't damage them at all
  10. I double click the launcher icon on my taskbar...it gets highlighted, nothing happens, the highlight fades away...rinse repeat

started today, did not have this problem sunday, nothing has changed

  12. thanks for the support and yeah...I have no idea why they don't have more asymmetry...it seems basic that for design purposes you'd want both asymmetry and symmetry to be available

IE, if the active player is in a phase where the Tsoo have not yet been obliterated, then the team would see Tsoo...if the active player has cleared the Tsoo than the Tsoo wouldn't appear

since that already exists, then it would be easy to put in a bit in the TF coding that says "Tsoo spawn for any TF group" for instance

also...if you accept a mission that is hunt Tsoo after clearing Tsoo then perhaps the mission will cause Tsoo to spawn as long as you have it...

in fact...I would support the world having more generic bad guys until we're on a mission where X group is causing trouble and thus starts replacing the generic baddies with a more specific enemy faction

and for the recored, i dont mean asian dragons, i mean mean looking dragons, tough.

    http://files.myopera.com/descentguy/...ragon-Gold.jpg

City of heroes is a game of firsts, so why not
Asian "dragons" are named as such mostly by misunderstanding Westerners

an Asian dragon is as likely to resemble a ten year old girl, a hornet, an old man or the long serpent with beard, whiskers and horn we've come to expect from that style

Asian dragons have shape because they find it convenient...they're more akin to being concepts or abstracts than actually creatures as we would understand it, being perfect shapeshifters for the simple fact that they don't really have a true form.

The serpent form is shown on pictures and the like because it is supposedly something that they become in order to impress people. Or else it is something that the artists thought would impress people. Westerners saw the pictures, heard the word connected and simply assumed it was the same thing as our European lizards with their breaths of either poison or fire.

matching most Western style dragons against anything of the Asian variety would be like trying to watch a match battle a thunderstorm, or a snowball survive a volcanic eruption

they have more to do with angels and demons than with the dragons of Western myth.

you only get equivalent levels of power from legends like Tiamat or Jormundgand in Western myths

Forbin's right...when it comes to real myth, Western dragons are largely wussy and uncouth as compared to Asian dragons being both hugely powerful and rather reasonable for most situations

granted, I excluded the D&D style dragons, which are among the most dangerous and powerful things in that game, the oldest usually even surpassing most demon lords
  15. So, I've never seen the My Little Ponies...but I am curious as to how they match up to

    "Befriending"

    Befriending Fate
    Befriending Tea
    Befriending Vivio

there were a few other instances, but yeah, Nanoha "expressing her pure emotions" to someone usually involves beating them down into the ground long enough for them to listen to her

for those that don't know, Vivio there is basically her adopted daughter...artificially aged and brainwashed to believe Nanoha was replaced by a monster...

And this is what happened to the person who did the brainwashing:

  16. superhero comics evolve directly from the tales of demigod level Heroes such as Guan Yu, Heracles, Beowulf, Son Wukong, Hiawatha, Lugh and so on

superhero comics are about as fantasy as you get

that said...they're right, we probably won't see this

    gargoyles maybe

but flight doesn't work all that well here and the computer AI doesn't use it intelligently....the flight AI isn't the biggest hurdle, all the AIs use the same stupid set up, but yeah

    reptilian maybe

and then we'll see the invasion of the slistacks

as it stands, we can't even use it to get far enough out of the area that the next revive allows us to rez without aggro...sometimes I don't even get to move
  19. ....at least give us an untouchable period and shorten the rooted period so we can actually, you know, change positions and maybe actually use the power for it's intended purpose of getting back into the fight quickly

As for a farming forum? Don't care either way, but I doubt it would happen.
ick...yeah, had that too...guy apparently put one of my characters on friend list and he started being verbally abusive and switching characters as I ignored him claiming to be "X's" friend until I petitioned him

I've found that saying "no thanks" invites "are you sure, it's really good XP" conversations

"farming is boring" at least cuts the conversation to two or three more attempts as adverse bugging me for five minutes....which is admittedly pointing out the worst offender who, for bonus points, told me to quit my RL family/friends team because he was getting good XP with his group and they needed someone to stand in a doorway and do nothing...not in those words exactly, but yes, I told him no thanks, yes I told him already had a team, and yes I told him I was teaming with RL family/friends....and he kept harassing me until I sent a harassment complaint

"farming is boring" bugs people enough that I tend to have shorter problems

I suppose I can be considered bitter with regards to bad experiences with the idiots out there
  22. personally the only thing that bugs me about farming is when farmers send me a tell invite and, when I say "farming is boring" continue trying to convince me to join anyway...

    it gets aggravating
  23. One of the things that rankles me between CoH and the other CO is that that other one has a much more intricate costume creator (though the art style itself is annoying)

I know the way it is hard-wired we're never going to be able to get 4-color pics and probably won't get upper arm and wrist accessories separate, just to name a handful, but the CoH creator already has shown some elements of asymmetry in some options

as it stands, you can pick the "robot arm" option and your left arm will look significantly different from your right.

I've done this before to represent someone wearing armor on just one arm.

but it would be nice if both left and right arms were always separate from each other.

If we could make one side monstrous and the other side more normal

also, if the sleeve option were always available....or something similar so you could have free-standing sleeves regardless of the presence of a jacket, sort of like leg warmers

I'm aware that option would clip with some of the more intricate glove options, but as long as it only clips with a handful that can be avoided, I'm fine with that

but yes, separating right and left gloves and boots would be very useful

as would having chest and bottom skins that are more asymmetrical and can be mirrored in order to orient them as desired..

    some uses:

people injured on one-side but not the other
someone in the middle of a slow change of body....person to monster type stuff
representing someone who put together a rather rag-tag otufit.

also, while I'm asking for costume stuff, a little off the main topic, but still:

bandages from realistic triage to full out mummy, separate from the face...

injuries that aren't to the level of zombie

    Aura suggestions:

Tentacles - translucent fade in and out aura of tentacles like the midnight grasp tentacles, rising up and around the character

ribbons/bandages (this maybe a cape) a number of trailing pieces of cloth twist off and flutter behind the character as if in the wind

I can easily see making a mummy themed character as follows:

Hat - Bandages, obscures most of face
Face - depending on whether doing "cute/sexy" mummy or a real undead monster

    upper Body - Trenchcoat
    Coat - Unraveling bandages
    CoatTail - bandages
    Chest - body wrap
    Left arm - bandages 1
    Right arm - bandages 2
    Belt - trailing bandages

    Lower Body - pants
Pants - tattered (see-through holes in places??)
    Bottom - bandages

Back Detail - Aura - Ribbons

and you can get anywhere from this: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&se...mummy#/d2bxvbh

This is why (for instance) they've told us we will likely never get the ability to respec powerset choices. They don't want people taking a level 50 character and turning it into -any- kind of powerset combo you want. I figure the same mindset applies for having more builds than the few we already have.

The idea of having something like a "PvE build" and a "PvP build" makes sense because the rules for how the powers work are actually different in those environments. But I really don't think the multiple build concept was ever intended to be a mechanism to allow a single character to have access to every power pool combination possible. You've pushed it to the limit - be thankful they even gave us the ability to have more than one build per character in the first place.
actually have the same character as a dark/dark tank and will build a brute eventually

have another character that exists as a kat/inv scrapper, wp/db tank and trick/arch defender across different names....so I've done that option as well
