I'd like to brag a bit and say that I don't really have many n00b moments (or, if I did, I managed to erase them from my consciousness). I have a younger brother who is really into this game, so I just ask him if I'm confused instead of broadcasting my ignorance. If he's not available for some reason, I ask others in-game, making it clear that I'm new to this level/aspect/story/etc. of the game. I usually get a good response and go from there.
The one n00b moment that I know of happened to me when I was getting my hero to the higher levels and commented about needing to do whatever missions to open up the ancillary power pools (I had already gotten a villain to 50, and assumed that the hero-side would have missions like the villains did). I was politely informed that this was unnecessary, since they were available "for free". I explained that I'd never had a high-level hero before, and we all had a good laugh.
For the record, I was on a team when I said this, so the world at large hasn't known about it until now. -
I got a response!!! OMG!!!
Even if your only response is "sound advice" I'll take it. At least it would let other people know that there IS sound advice out there (plus it would be an enormous ego-boost for me, as if I need it). I'm just glad that you agree. I'm sorry that I had to snap to get anyone's attention. It worked, though.
Anyway, sound advice only works if people take it. I'm glad someone is paying attention, but I regret that I'm only getting attention by being offensive. It seems like calm forum discussions on this subject are few and far between. -
I've posted on many threads like this "AE: someone needs to do something about it" and I've been largely ignored.
If you want my opinion, please look at the other threads I've posted in. I'm too frustrated to repost it right now.
Oh, be careful of the last one I posted prior to this. I knew I was gonna snap at someone one day, but that was something else.... -
Okay, apparently my first post (#207 on page 11, if anyone cares to check) wasn't offensive enough to get anyone's attention in this thread, which has quickly degenerated into a "Your playstyle SUXX!" thread.
That being the case, let me get your attention with the following statement: THERE ARE TOO MANY IDIOTS IN THIS THREAD!
Now, can we please move on to a more productive line of reasoning? Since so many of you are obviously passionate about your particular style of gaming, why not do something besides complain that a) you can't find a team, b) this aspect of the game should be nerfed/removed, c) new players who know next to nothing get on your nerves, and d) I've stated my opinion sooo many times and no one seems to listen, so now I'm gonna re-hash it one more time!
With d), I can sympathize with you. I have been making my point (if you want new players to play RC, show it to them in a polite and friendly manner, then respect their choice once they know enough to make it) on many threads recently, and only got aknowledgement yesterday. I'm frustrated too, believe me.
As far as c) goes, maybe the new players are afraid that the person they ask will be so anti-AE that all they'll get is a "you really should've known this by now, but you would if you actually PLAYED, wouldn't you." If you want new players to become knowledgable vets, then answer thier questions politely, and encourage them to contact you for further information BY NOT INSULTING THEIR PARTICULAR PLAYSTYLE.
Letter b) in the list seems to be a direct result of a), so I'll address both together. If you can't find a team, there are several steps you could take, the least productive of which is to whine about it incessantly. A better approach would be to make a team of new players and show off your favorite RC to them (which is better than showing off your opinion on the forums, as if I can say that). Saying that certain aspects of the game should be nerfed/removed to suit your personal playstyle seems extremely arrogant to me. Why should everyone conform to you? Or for that matter, even come close to conforming with you? They aren't the same as you, so expecting them to like what you like is just wrong.
Wow, I was really hostile in this post, huh? Sorry, but I guess the frustration of being ignored over and over and over is getting to me (I mean this by way of explanation, not an an excuse). Feel free to debunk my points and argue with me at your leisure. If my tone offends you, you can read my earlier post for a much calmer and more detailed statement.
*DISCLAIMER: The above is an opinion. Argue with it if you want. If I see a valid point in your argument, I will revise this opinion as necessary. Thank you for your time.* -
As I said, if you want new players to experience regular content (RC), then offer to take them out of the AE building and show them. This is your chance, as a veteran player, to show off your favorite things about the game. Take advantage of it.
All the hostility of the anti-AE players seems to be extremely counterproductive. For example, they complain that no one is teaming with them, yet they viciously attack anyone who even appears to be an "AE baby", which causes the AE-only player to view RC players as hostile, which glues them to the AE building even more.
Therefore, if the anti-AE players want to get people out of AE, they should be nice to the new players, and offer to show them the full scope of the game. If the new players are already in AE, then do a few missions with them (even if it means going into AE yourself) and talk constantly about your favorite RC arcs/missions/TFs/contacts without putting AE down in any fashion. When the new players get curious, show them what you were talking about. BE NICE and answer their questions politely, even if your first reaction is "OMG you should know this already" (the beauty of the internet; you can think faster than you can type, and you can also backspace).
None of this is guaranteed to work, however. The best response for an anti-AE player would be if the new player will completely agree with you and never go back to AE again. If you are polite and courteous, then the worst possible response would be for them to go back to AE and never leave it. However, when questioned by their friends as to where they were, they should be able to truthfully reply that, "This really nice vet showed me some other stuff. I didn't like it, but at least I made another friend."
Please remember that, ultimately, the "AE decision" is up to the individual player. Even if you're extremely against AE, you must respect other players' decisions since, after all, what's fun for you isn't necessarily fun for everyone. Attempts at coercing new players in a threatening or hostile manner will lead them to ultimately quit the game, which means that the devs are out one subscription and can't do as much for the rest of us.
All in all, a little respect and understanding (which does not imply agreement) could go a loooong way. -
New players who never bother to try the non-AE content before moving into the AE building permanently.

101) Had a spawn of purples from someone else, descend on you and promptly were kissing pavement as you were running to the train in talos or bricks.
102) Cussed out the person who caused the purple spawn in broadcast..
103) Attempted to enter the Train from the exit, and wondered why it wouldn't let you in
104) Actually teamed outside of AE.
105) Made a Global Friend.
106) Made an utter fool out of yourself on the forums.
107) Taken advice from others that helped you to never do 106 again.
108) Tried other AT's besides the one they got to 50.
109) Complained bitterly about someone's playstyle, only to realize that yours has similar elements.
110) Taken a hint from a more experienced player. -
How about "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES"? Or simply "Run" as that is often a last resort for most people (especially when panicked) and he's your last-tier pet.
FYI, you're not alone; I can barely think of good names for my characters, let alone their pets. -
I'm @Lucretia MacEvil
I play mostly on the Infinity server (except for one character).
I'm a bit of a perma-n00b (aka, I'm not into the numbers/technical stuff), but I do have a working knowledge of the game.
Come by and see me sometime (let me know that it's you), and I'll answer any questions to the best of my ability (without using too much in-game shorthand, which you can always ask about). I'll even answer them slowly, since I can't type too fast anyway.
One more thing, make sure you experience both AE and non-AE content before you decide whether or not to move your apartment into the AE building (I would personally start with the non-AE stuff, as it's intended to introduce you to the game).
Looking forward to hearing from you!
(type /t @Lucretia MacEvil, *your message goes here* to contact me on any character in the game) -
I don't know why I insist on making my point over and over in various threads. Maybe I'm hoping that someone will listen to me one day. And, maybe, it would be a better game (at least for me) if someone would.
Sorry.
I didn't mean for this to be another "You all sux n00bs" post in a thread that has clearly had enough of that. I just get tired of being ignored sometimes (and I'm under considerable stress in real life, but let's not go there).
*takes a deep breath*
There, now that I've gotten that out of my system, I'm ready to be rational once again, and to reiterate my point.
There are ways to get people out of the AE building without drastically changing the game. I've already tried this idea, and it has been met with curiosity and interest.
If you're wondering what I'm talking about, that's exactly my point. Get the "AE babies" wondering about all the non-AE content. Talk about it to them. Brag about how fast you did a TF and how wonderful that team was. Tell them all about your favorite dev-written story arc.
When they get curious enough, show them what you're talking about. Take them on a non-AE content tour. Show them a variety of play options. Help them change their style if they want to.
Once they've had enough of the "outside world", let them choose what to do next. If they want to go back to AE and stay there, then that's their choice to make. If they want to stay out of it, that's their choice as well. Going half-and-half is also an option, and it's an option that they're free to take if they choose to.
So much of this game is based on individual choice, whether it's your AT and powersets or your friends and playstyle. No one can force others to choose something that they don't (at least partially) want to do.
If you choose to follow the advice I have given, please do so in conjunction with this advice: Don't fall back into the "AE sux" mentality when showing off your favorite dev content. Don't say anything like, "aren't you glad I got you out of AE?" or refer to AE in a negative way. Be nice and answer questions, even if you think that the other player should already know the answer (based on their level, vet badges, etc.).
In closing this (somewhat rambling) post, let me say that I will be available to anyone who wants me to give them the kind of tour I described above. I play on the Infinity server, and my global is @Lucretia MacEvil
I have a number of other (largely ignored) posts that are similar to this one, so if I'm confusing you or if you don't like my attitude in this post, please look at one of my other (calmer) posts to get the general idea that I am trying to convey (people's ideas of fun are different, but they should at least make an informed decision before sticking to one thing).
I look forward to hearing your responses, but please be nice, or at least try to (I did, even if it doesn't read that way).
Thank you for reading this absurdly long post. -
Quote:No, you can't argue that their personal experience didn't happen, but (as this thread shows) you can argue that they drew the wrong conclusion from it.It really is common knowledge that Defenders do not solo as well as many other ATs. People, myself included, have observed how much easier solo play is with e.g. a Scrapper. It's just true; no matter what else is debatable, you cannot argue that an individual's personal experience simply did not happen.
-
All this reminds me of a joke I once heard:
A city man is driving down a country road, when he sees a farmer in a field whacking a donkey in the head with a two-by-four.
Concerned, the man gets out of his car and asks the farmer, "What are you doing?! You're going to hurt him!"
The farmer replies,"Yep, I am."
The city man, still concerned (and convinced that the farmer is a moron), says, "So stop hitting him!"
The farmer replies, "But I have to get his attention first!" -
Against my better judgement, I have decided to get involved with this thread. I read it from pages 1-13 and decided that I couldn't take it anymore, so if someone has already said this, I'm just seconding what you said already.
All I truly know about anything is based on my personal experience. This includes CoH. Someone can tell me things or give me advice, but my own experience will ultimately determine whether or not I dismiss that advice.
In my personal experience, this is true for everyone I've ever met as well.
That being said, if your experience has led you to the conclusion that certain powersets are useless (to you), then avoid using them. If you value/enjoy solo play more than team play, use sets that are better for soloing. If you're a teaming type, use sets that are better for teaming.
The whole point for such drastically different sets in a single AT is to give you a range of playstyles without leaving the AT. Again, this is what my experience has let me to conclude, but I suspect that others have come to the same conclusion.
If you don't like the AT in general (based on your experience with it), play a different one. Save those who like it a lot of headache by stating that your opinion is your opinion, and it is based purely on your own experience. Perhaps your personal style doesn't fit with the role(s) of a defender. That's okay, since there are plenty of other AT's to choose from.
As for the numbers you cite, I can't help but wonder if anyone who cites numbers is leaving something out (accidentally or otherwise) that would somehow invalidate their argument. The one thing I actually retianed from my Statistics course was that, without the whole picture, almost any conclusion could be drawn.
I'm not trying to invite an argument when posting this. I am, in fact, very tired of all the snide comments that have occurred on this thread. I'm just trying to say that, when it comes down to it, everyone is different. This means different things appeal to different people. Some people like the defender AT the way it is, while others would call for a drastic overhaul. Trying to balance these different views is a job I gladly leave to the Developers. I'm just trying to help people realize their differences and what they mean to the game as it is.
*The above is an opinion, stated as kindly as possible after reading 13 pages of people arguing. My intention is not to back one side or the other, but to suggest that those sides at least consider each other's point of view.* -
Quote:I can just see this happening in PvP zones...
* I'm sorry.. I have to quit the team.. no... it's not that you disagreed with me... no it's not how you're leading the team.. but.. your defender put an orange force field around me.. and I'm wearing purple... dear gods man! You've made me CLASH!"
Some hero with pastel green powers fights a villain with neon pink ones...
Powers the color of vomit vs. light orange ones...
Bold purple vs. a soft yellow...
"This whole camoflauge thing doesn't really work for me. Why? Because you go into the jungle, I can't see you! I think that if you're going into battle, you should make a statement; if you're going to fight, clash!"
Just don't invite me to it. -
MORE!!!
plz?
I... can't... stand...
Laughing... too... hard...
*eyes roll back as she passes out* -
I would LOVE to see this happen! I laughed so hard I fell down when I first read it (note to self: GET OUT MORE!)
Can you do the Villain-side contacts now?
Don't make me beg....
Okay, you asked for it... plz? plz? plz? *repeats 10,000 times, each time increasing slightly in pitch until you can no longer hear it* -
I didn't say it was all the "Lee"s, I just said it was a lot of them. If you've looked up more adverbs, I'm happy for you (especially because, for some strange reason, I don't want a character whose name ends in "Lee"). Please share and let everyone enjoy them.
You don't mind if I use one, do you? -
my namesake, Lucretia MacEvil lvl 50 dark/dark/soul corruptor (I absolutely LOVE that song!)
Femaelstrom lvl 50 ice/storm/ice controller (believe it or not, I got this BEFORE Going Rogue was announced!!!)
Axident Prone lvl something tank (whom I never play, let me know if you want the name)
Sol Sister lvl 20ish fire/empathy controller (my dad thougth of this one, but I liked it)
I have an exceptionally hard time coming up with names (that's why I keep a dictionary and a thesaurus by my computer, lol). -
*Before you read this, you should know that I haven't been playing CoX from the beginning. I joined a while after CoV was released at the request of my younger brother, who wanted someone in the house to know what the heck he was talking about when he described this game. I'm not into very many of the technical aspects of this game, and play it purely for enjoyment. I do, however, have basic knowledge of in-game content, and read news posts every now and then.*
That being said, I feel the personal compulsion to address some of the issues that I see here, the main one being "why didn't they do that? It was really cool!"
From my point of view, this game is constantly evolving along the lines of the majority's wants and needs, as well as those of the Devs. They introduce things that they think are cool and/or have been requested by a large number of players (at least, those ideas which are currently feasable), and players react to them. The Devs then judge these reactions and plan the next set of updates. Certain ideas which are not feasable are put on hold until they can be implemented/are forgotten about/are so old that no one cares anymore.
I'm not trying to say that your list falls into the middle/last category of the sentance above (although it might in some people's books). I think that part of the problem is that newer people (in some cases myself) have absolutely no idea what those changes would mean to the game or have even heard of them when they were proposed. Some people like the game the way it is, and have only a passing interest in new content. Others relish the new challenges and options that come with most updates/issues. From my experience, most people fall in between. I could personally care less about a new TF/SF since I don't have very many high level characters to do them with. However, I was never more excited than when I heard about power customization, since I tend to make new characters quite often (I know I'm an altoholic, but I don't care :P).
My point is the same as it has been for a while; what's fun for you is not always fun for someone else, let alone everyone. What you care about may be a non-issue to others.
Also, evolution sometimes has dead-ends. Sure, some ideas were really cool, and there are some veteran players who would love to see them reappear, but most of the new players have no idea that anything like that was even in the game to begin with, so they're not in high demand.
Demand isn't everything, but it still has a major influence on the Devs and the content they publish.
There, I voiced my opinion politely and in a matter-of-fact manner. Please do me the same courtesy when deconstructing it. -
"The British and the Americans are two peoples seperated by a common language."
Who said that first? I can't remember, but I think it was Winston Churchill... -
I tried posting in the SG/VG recruitment, but got no response, so I might as well try this here, lol.
Name: Rogue Isles Getaway Service
Currently Recruiting: Yes, always.
RP level: Occasional, but we're so small right now that there's not much chance for it.
Theme/Concept: A special group set up by Lord Recluse to help his destined ones through various means, mostly by transporting them around the Rogue Isles.
Activity: Well, we're small. I'm on almost every day in the evenings. Hopefully we'll be more active once we get more players.
Requirements: This is what gets most people.
Your character must have RIG somewhere in its name (RIGbot, RIGger, or just RIG).
Your character must have a checkered costume pattern to be worn when we eventually to vg stuff (other costumes are allowed).
Your character must have the Recall Friend power by level 10.
There is NO griefing permitted.
*Other than that, it's up to you.*
Leadership: RIGbot Becky
In-game Contact: @Lucretia MacEvil
Out-of-game Contact: Lucretia_MacEvil on the boards.
URL: Don't have one, but if someone wants to set one up, that would be swell.
Other Details: We're a bit rougher and gruffer than the Taxibots, which makes sense, since we ARE villains after all. Politeness is not a requirement, although it is encouraged to a certain degree.
The current sign-up (Infinity forum) is the Searching for Evil Taxis thread, or you can sign up on the SG/VG recruitment forum in the Getting the Infinity RIGbots Back on Their Feet thread. -
