The Envenomed Dagger temp power has pretty nice 250% Regen debuff -- enough to get through an AV. I haven't tried to take on a GM since my Ill/TA has a long way to go before he get Perma-PA (too many level 50's). One of the Incarnate options also has -Regen, but I haven't even started my Ill/TA on that road yet.

Quote:My Kin/Elec was designed as an endurance drainer -- before Elec control did it better. My best way to End Drain a group was Power Build Up--Thunderous Blast--pop a blue--run in and hit Short Circuit. Short Circuit alone doesn't drain enough endurance to work, but it does prevent Recovery for a little while.Yes, Short Circuit does have a large -recovery debuff. In my time playing storm/elec, it was the only endurance drain power that actually seemed useful, as you can drain them to 0 all day long (even that can be tough to do before they die anyway), but they'll still attack the instant their recovery ticks... unless you Short Circuit.

Quote:Invasion just came out in March, and includes a CD with a bunch of stuff on it. I finished reading it about a week ago. Not bad as Chapter 1 of a much longer story. I thought that the main bad guys were a little bit on the Stereotypical side. They had a bit of a Sky Captain/Max Fleisher feel to them. Some interesting characters. Every now and then, you can really see the CoH influences. What's the name of this novel? I have a Barnes and Noble gift card sitting around somewhere that I need to use.
There are a couple of scenes where the "healer" is supposed to stay out of battle, but runs in anyway to save the day by using some offensive powers. No "Rockin' the Aura." -
My Ice/Rad is low level, but I have an Ice/Storm and a bunch of */Rads at 50. What is your playstyle and build? Ice can be built as a ranged controller using Shiver or a melee controller using Arctic Air. Now-a-days, you can easily take both but focus more on one playstyle or the other.
Many Ice/Rads focus on melee, using Arctic Air and Choking Cloud together. The best use of Choking Cloud is to have an initial first-strike mitigation power and then combined with another PB AoE aura. Ice, Fire and Electric Controls all have this ability. On my Ice/Storm, I usually let the tank go in, then use Ice Slick in the area of the group of foes, then run in with AA on to control foes while the team takes them down. Ice/Rad is even better for this strategy -- which means that you will be in melee most of the time.
One key question is, "How often do you get mezzed?" Mez powers will turn off AA and CC. On my Fire/Rads and my Elec/Rad, I have the Psi APP's Indomidible Will to substantially limit the times I get mezzed. Psi Tornado, Mind over Body and Mind Blast are all decent, but the main reason to take the Psi APP is if you need mez protection.
If mez is not a big problem and you play in melee, then Earth APP is a good choice . . . if you can stand the ugly armor. Fissure is a great, short-range AoE and Seismic Smash is a great melee single target attack that adds a hold -- Smash+Block of Ice will hold a boss and do some decent damage. The heal is nice, too.
If Mez isn't problem and you stay at range, then Ice and Fire are both good options. Ice has a S/L defense-based shield if you want to build for that. Ice has Hibernate, a great panic-button power that lets you take time-out to heal AND recover endurance -- Hibernate has saved my tail many times. And it has a great single target blast and two AoE attacks, and Cold attacks are rarely resisted. On the other hand, Fire does slightly more damage with Fire Blast and Fireball. The shield is resistance-based. Rise of the Phoenix is the ONLY self-rez power available to Controllers. Consume is OK, but has too long a recharge -- I generally don't take it and just use Blue Insps.
Primal's Power Boost is great for Mind Controllers, but Ice Control has fewer powers that can benefit from it. The rest of the Primal set is OK . . . Conserve Power is nice to have.
I don't have personal experience with all of the PPP sets, so I can't help you there.
In terms of a build: On the Ice side, it really depends on how you want to play. Block of Ice, Ice Slick, Glacier and Jack Frost are needed for any build. Arctic Air is needed for melee, and Shiver is needed for a ranged build -- but taking both is a great option. Chilblain can provide some single target damage if you ever want to solo -- not much, but it is something. The AoE Immob, Frostbite, is optional -- it conflicts with Ice Slick, but can be useful to keep foes in your AoE of Choking Cloud+Arctic Air. Frostbite also has -Knockback, which is useful if you have teammates with lots of knockback. Flashfreeze is a ranged Sleep -- most often skipped, but can be handy solo or on smaller teams to control as long as nobody wants to use AoE damage attacks.
On Rad, everything is pretty essential other than Mutation, Fallout and Choking Cloud for a ranged build. Choking Cloud is very, very good for a melee build, and that's the way I would go. Mutation is nice to have if you have room. Fallout is a very, very situational power, but quite effective when that situation happens . . . you have a teammate die surrounded by foes and you can get near without dying yourself. -
I think we need a definition of a "Guilty Pleasure" film. I think of it as a movie that is generally considered to be a "bad" film for one reason or another, but I happen to like it and want to watch it on occasion, and may even have it in my movie collection.
Some are easy: "The Spirit" was widely panned by critics, did poorly in the box office and was the subject of tons of disgust and rage by fans of the old comic strip. I saw it in the theater and thought it was horrible for the first 15 minutes or so . . . until I figured out that it was an extreme campy comedy dressed up as a noir comic book movie. It was advertised all wrong, as an action movie. In many ways, it looked like an action movie with some really stupid stuff in it. Once I realized what director Frank Miller was trying to do, I thought is was funny, much in the same way that the old cheesy Batman television series and the 1980 version of Flash Gordon was cheesy. It went over the top with stereotypes to make fun of them.
The problem is that few people could really appreciate it. The mind-set has changed. If people still considered Nazis as threatening, then Samuel L. Jackson dressed as a Nazi for no valid reason whatsoever would be funny. But today, Nazis are most often seen as the subject of jokes and ridicule (i.e. The Producers), so the impact of that scene is lessened. I bought "The Spirit" on DVD and still think it is funny: corney dialog, gorgeous women treated like objects and ridiculous fight scenes in a parady of movies from the 40's. It is a "guilty pleasure."
Van Helsing was supposed to be the first in a series of films turning Van Helsing into an action hero fighting classic Universal Studio villains. It failed to get the audience and is generally considered a bad movie. I liked it, and actually have the DVD. That is a "guilty pleasure." LXG is another one that clearly fits the definition.
Now, I don't consider a movie that is intentionally bad to be a guilty pleasure. Something like "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" was supposed to be a stupid movie -- obvious from its name. Movies that fit a certain genre and succeed within that genre are not films that I would consider a "guilty pleasure." The first Matrix was very good, and the second two weren't nearly as good, but still had a huge audience. I don't consider those to be a "guilty pleasure."
Spaceballs is considered one of Mel Brook's classic comedy spoofs -- while some people don't like that style of humor, I don't think it is a "guilty pleasure."
Independence Day? It was a huge hit at the time and most people still like it regardless of its weaknesses -- not a guilty pleasure.
Waterworld: It was a flop. A hugely expensive film with a bankable actor . . . that was pretty boring in parts. I didn't like it all that much, which is the common view. So If you are fond of Waterworld, I'd call it a guilty pleasure.
Timeline: I liked the book. Hated the movie. The movie was a flop. If you like the movie, I'd call it a guilty pleasure.
Another possible category of "guilty pleasure" might be if you like a film clearly not intended for your demographic, even if the film was successful within its genre. I happen to love Disney's "The Little Mermaid." It was a landmark film that revived great animation with great voice acting, wonderful music and a new popularity. In an era where no musicals were being made, Disney turned its new, fresh animated films into great musicals with songs like "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl."
So, liking a film that is out of your usual demographic might also be considered a "guilty pleasure." -
It is not difficult. On Mid's, go to Export Short Form. (I prefer the Fruit Salad color option.) When the three check boxes pop up, click the bottom one that includes the Data Chunk with your build. Then Export -- that will copy the code to your clipboard. Then come to the forum, set up your post, and paste it on the post with a Ctrl-V.
Some of us look at the forums during breaks at work, so we don't have access to Mids all the time. -
I looked at your build and made a few small changes to make your Recovery a little better, replaced the Fire APP with Ice -- Hibernate can let you recover Health AND Endurance before you die rather than rez you after you die. This was done quickly this morning, so there may be a lot more improvements that can be made.

That is one of the great ones.
I have used a scene from this film when I teach a seminar on Laws for Debt Collectors . . . It is the scene where Swayze is instructing the other bouncers on his three rules: "Be nice. Be nice until it's time to not be nice." -
Several films mentioned in this thread are not "bad" movies. Some are Cheesy classics, like Flash Gordon and Arnie's Conan. I have several films that most people consider to be bad, but I like:
The Spirit. Widely considered to be terrible, but I thought it was amazingly funny as extremely cheesy.
Roadhouse. Another extremely cheesy movie with great quotes.
League of Extraodinary Gentlemen. I thought LXG was a fun film. I don't care about the comic.
Van Helsing. Another entertaining film -- not great but entertaining.
Daredevil; Director's Cut. One that has been mentioned several times here.
Ghost Rider. Hated by fans of the comic and haters of Nic Cage. I mostly enjoyed it. -
Quote:It probably won't be any consolation, but I did the exact same thing on the first character to run the Mender Ramiel arc. What's really embarrassing is before I headed off to run my TF I was STANDING NEXT TO MENDER RAMIEL.
D'oh! One little click was all I needed...
P.S. I do think it's confusing the first time around that even though it SAYS you got an Incarnate Shard at the end of the last mission, you don't actually get one until you talk to Ramiel.
What made it even more embarassing was that I had made the same mistake on Test when I didn't know that I had to go back to Mender Ramiel to actually get the Alpha Slot. I had actually discussed the error with my buddies on ventrilo to let them know that everyone should make sure they go back to the Mender to get the slot. I had also taken a bunch of characters through the arc already and gotten the Alpha slot on them. In other words, I knew better.
My favorite embarassing typo story in the game was in the old days of Hami-Raids when Illusion Controllers would float over Hamidon to drop Phantom Army on Hami to draw his aggro -- we were the "Drop Team," and one of the frequent leaders was Neutrino playing her "Tiny Neut" Illusion Controller. Neut was quite well known for some typos that resulted in some confusion of what she actually meant to say. As the "Drop Team," we would float far above Hami and chat while waiting to start dropping our "Phants" when instructed by the Raid Leader. Neut, as Drop Team Leader, got the word from the Raid leader and suddenly announced, "OK, drop your Pants."
That misplaced "h" resulted in a lot of funny conversations. -
Quote:Why do you think that it is OK to give all your teammates Ice Shields, and not have one yourself? Taking Ice Armor lets you be consistant with the rest of the team.I'm stubborn about those ugly shields...I dont want to be covered in earth nor ice hence the inclusion of mace mastery. I'm pretty sure for when your doing trials that your controls simply wont be enough and having EXTRA layer of protection will be welcome.
Each I think has it's downside for "ME"....
Ice/Earth- Ugly shield(yes I know Im being petty)
Fire-Resist Shield, No heal, and rise of phoenix should be traded out for rain of fire
Mace-Redraw
Right now fire is OK...but that resist shield isnt stacking with Manuevers, or Def in Artic fog, although it's resist alone is 27%, or else I'd keep it.
The Earth shield is ugly. The Ice one isn't too bad. -
I also went with the Ice APP with my Ill/Cold. Ice Armor is a S/L defense-based shield, and it makes you consistant with your teammates because now you have an Ice Shield, too. (The shield works fine with my character concept, too. His name is "Florida Snowman." Since there are no snowmen in Florida, he is clearly an Illusion.)
Ice Blast is a fast-recharging, effective offensive power, and lets you have the fast Blind-SW-Ice Blast-SW attack chain. While Fire is just as fast and does slightly more damage, I felt that the other benefits of the Ice APP made it the best choice.
I love Hibernate on this character. As long as I'm quick enough on the button, Hibernate lets me heal up both my health and endurance. Most of the time, I rely upon Phantom Army to draw the aggro, and don't really need defense. Hibernate covers me most of the time when I draw too much aggro myself.
I actually chose Frost Breath instead of Ice Storm. It recharges faster and is up-front damage to help me kill stuff faster to take advantage of the Illusory damage in SW, Phantom Army and Phanty's Decoy. -
Because Ice does such low damage, the damage increase is not significant. And Ice/Sonic will have no ToHit Debuff and not much in terms of defensive powers or protection. Compare it to, say, Ice/Storm with Hurricane for ToHitDebuff/protection, Freezing Rain for debuffs and control, Tornado and Lightning Storm for more damage. Or Ice/Rad, with Choking Cloud and EM Pulse for control, Radiation Infection for ToHit Debuff.
Since Ice Control's strength is AoE Slow and -Recharge, you are going to get some aggro unless you rely upon a good tank or other teammate to grab the aggro first. It is going to be a tough character to level -- will need a lot of team strategy. -
Quote:1. You want Creepers up as much as possible, so unless you have a TON of global Recharge, stick with your current slotting. Creepers is a control power first, then a damage power. As a control power, you want it available.A couple questions concerning my plant/storm build.
I have the following in creepers:
2 Nucleolus, Posi Dmg Proc, Impeded Swiftness Proc, and 2 recharge IOs.
Would you replace the impeded swiftness or one of the recharges with the Javelin proc?
2nd question is regarding roots. I currently have a full set of enfeebled operation slotted - which has some very sweet defense bonuses. Just wondering about the pros/cons of losing that defense for some additional damage via the Posi Blast set.
2. Roots is the one place where I think that a control power is actually a damage power. This is one of those trade-offs. To me, Roots is a key damage power -- the AoE damage from Roots is one of the main benefits of a Plant controller. (But then, I'm less of a fan of Defense on controllers than some people.) Others may recommend keeping the Defense. -
Quote:Is it named Wanda?Consider me corrected then.
I'll have to look into it a bit more. The character just hit 35 last night. Its a fish themed character so I thought Mako's shark and barf attacks would be a funny addition.
Quote:As for the accolades, of course! Badge monger here.
Is it worth taking leadership as a controller?
Thanks again.
I'm not a big fan of Leadership on most controllers, but I have it on a couple. I try to fit it in on Defenders. -
Since both are good powers for a Luck of the Gambler Recharge, I have them both on my Ill/Rad. It is not uncommon for Controller builds looking for Recharge.

Quote:Fully agree. Yes, SB can be a bit of a pain to administer. Yes, you can run into annoying teammates who bug you for SB. And then there are the few who don't want SB. But applying Speed Boost to a team will improve overall team performance more than most things you can do. The Recharge and Recovery buffs are huge. Setting up binds can make the chore fairly minor.I'm sorry, I call BS. Controlling isn't that hard or time consuming where you can't buff your teammates. If they are being obnoxious a simple explanation that you'll get to them and not to get their panties all in a bunch if its not on them 24/7. If they still have a problem with them: quit team and get better teammates. I hear it all the time how, buffing isn't a controllers job, blah blah blah......yes it is.....part of it anyway. You have two powersets just like an empathy defender. The argument you're too busy to buff is the same lame argument a "pure empath" is too busy to blast. Is it your primary purpose: no. But it's part of what makes a controller special and helpful and powerful. Explain up front that you'll keep the team buffed but that you'll do it between spawns as you'll be controlling while fighting. If they can't handle that, sayonara. But not taking a buff because of something a team may or may not do, is unacceptable in my opinion.
(Sorry, not picking on you Maestro)
/threadjack over
When I play a */Kin, I do my best to apply SB as often as convenient, generally between engagements. Often, teammates don't wait . . . oh, well, not my fault and their loss. I do my best to get all my teammates between controlling and my various other things I can do. If I don't want to constantly have to apply SB . . . then I play a different character. -
I don't have Mid's available at the moment, so the lack of a link isn't a problem. I see a few suggestions I could make. My general view of Controllers is that I focus more on Control than Defense -- an occasional faceplant is an OK price to pay for providing better control for a team. Please note that my view of */Storm is that Hurricane provides a lot of protection with its Repel and large -ToHit. I don't think your Defense numbers are all that great, so I probably wouldn't focus much on Defense. Debuffing and control are more important, but Damage helps. However, if you are going to go for Defense then really go for Defense -- take the Ice or Earth APP for the S/L Defensive Shields. (I prefer Ice for this combo.)
I don't see Plant/Storm as a great farmer -- sure you can do it better than most controller combos, but that's not what I build for, so take that into account. (The few times I do a farming run, I use my Elec/Shield scrapper. I find farming to be boring.) If you really want to build for farming, then really build for S/L defense with some Kin Combat sets and other S/L defense.
Strangler: Stick with 4 Baz Gaze, and replace the proc and maybe the triple with an Acc/Dam Hami-O and a common Damage . . . or if you want more hold, a Dam/Mez Hami-O.
Gale: Throw an Acc in the default slot, and it can be used once in a while as a "get out of my face" power.
Roots: The Grav Anchor set is great for other AoE Immobs . . . but not Roots, which does twice the damage of other AoE Immobs. Slot it with 5 Posi-Blast (or the purple set), with a Recharge in the 6th slot, or a Grav Anchor Chance for Hold if you have enough Global Recharge.
Snow Storm: I prefer 2 EndRdx if you are going to use it much. The -Recharge is nice.
Hasten: I prefer 3 Recharge unless I have enough global Recharge to keep it perma with 2.
Leadership uses a lot of endurance in this endurance-expensive build. It provides some nice things, but I'm not sure it is worth the power picks for the end cost.
Seeds: Getting this back fast is key. I would replace the Conf/End with a common Recharge. You lose the ranged defense. (and move it to 8, not that it makes much difference.)
Steamy: If you can spare a slot, this is a nice place for either the Steadfast or Karma -Knockback.
I like Super Speed on a */Stormie for the Stealth and maneuverability, but you have a stealth proc in Sprint which works for the stealth.
Freezing Rain: This is not a very good damage power -- it provides large debuffs, so you want it up as much as possible. All those "-1" damage you see are actually just a small fraction of 1. Slot for Recharge first, then the Achilles Chance for Resist Debuff proc, then the Lady Gray and/or Posi-Blast proc. I think the procs actually do more damage in the long run than slotting for damage.
Similar to Leadership, I'm not a fan of the Fighting Pool. I would rather have other powers like O2 Boost (to heal your pet and help teammates), Hurricane, or even Spore Burst (good for handling adds when Seeds is recharging).
Tornado does a ton of damage when slotted for Damage. Your Roots has -Knockback to turn Tornado into a damage power -- and it is auto hit on hard targets. Slot it for Damage, EndRdx and Recharge. I think that will do more damage than the procs.
I like the Ice APP for Plant/Storm. Hibernate works as a self-heal and for Recovery, too. (Storm lacks either.) The fast single target blast helps your single target damage. (You could add Entangle slotted for Damage for more single-target damage.) A S/L Defense shield. A choice of two AoE damage powers -- I like Frost Breath because you're already in position for a cone (seeds). Plus, Cold damage is rarely resisted. My Plant/Kin went with Earth, as Seismic Smash really helps the single target damage (which plant is weak on).
Health: a Numina's Heal IO will net you more Regen than that Regen Tissue proc . . . you can see it in Mids.
Stamina: Why the single Efficacy Adapter? Why not a common? -
That often quoted line from Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2 ("The first thing we'll do, let's kill all the lawyers.") is misunderstood. The context is a couple of murderous low-life guys were dreaming of what they would do if one of them could become king. The actual intent of the line is somewhat in dispute even by Shakespeare scholars, but since it was spoken by Dick the Butcher, a wise-cracking murderous bad guy, many believe it is, in fact, a back-handed compliment to lawyers and their role of protecting rights.
Folks forget that there are lawyers on either side of most disputes. The problem is that the lawyers have hate directed at them due to the circumstances. Think about it. If you get sued, you hate the other lawyer, win or lose. If you lose, you hate your own lawyer, too. Even if you win, you are not too fond of your own lawyer, even if he or she did a great job, once you get the bill.
And yet most attorneys work hard to do a great job dealing with the messes their clients get into. Like any profession, there are bad ones but the majority are very good.
Sorry for the threadjack, but misuse of that quote is a pet peeve of mine. -
Quote:I haven't seen the episodes -- no HBO. :-(*** SPOILER ALERT ***
Yeah I don't have a problem with the dire wolves being fiercely loyal to their owners and I don't even have a problem with one of them coming out of nowhere to maul another person who's threatening their owners. But twice in one episode? I thought that was pushing it a little. Now I'm almost going to be expecting a "random wolf attack" in every episode. All I'm saying is that from a literary point of view that kind of minor deus ex machina can quickly lose its significance if it gets used every half-hour of the show.
But in the books, there is a special connection between the Dire Wolves and the Stark children. That connection makes the protective nature of the wolves make more sense. In the books, the Dire Wolves also Kick-***, and it doesn't seem random or cheap.
Quote:Clearly there's something building between Tyrion and Jon. It could just be the fact that he's interested in another person who's also, like him, sort of the "black sheep" of a noble family and sees a younger version of himself in Jon. Of course they could take it to extremes and we could find out that they are somehow secretly related via the "mystery" mother. Either way Tyrion's interest is likely not random in any case. He doesn't seem like the type who would waste any effort on anything that wasn't deviously planned for well in advance. -
Quote:I don't think you can really evaluate Elec/Rad until you have Choking Cloud fully slotted. Electric, Fire and Ice are the three primaries that can take advantage of Choking Cloud because they have a ranged "alpha," and then a combination of two PB AoE toggle auras that will make each of them better by being combined.I'm about 10 levels in on each (Elec/Kin and Elec/Rad) just testing each out, though they will have to get near 20 before i decide on my own I see the possibilities that the Elec/Rad has by just jumping into the middle of a group later on. /Kin has always been a favorite though, and I really like it also, though I see more of a lockdown in /Rad, Kin seems to have more DMG output maybe...
Both /Storm and /Sonic looked good but I haven't looked hard enough to decide atm. I am soloing quite a bit though..
But then, I'm especially fond of Rad. So far, I have Ill/Rad, 2xFire/Rad, Earth/Rad, Plant/Rad all at 50, and several other */Rads in the late 30's and 40's.
